 A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR 
9 AUGUST 2015
FIND YOUR BIBLE, OPEN YOUR BIBLE, READ YOUR BIBLE
LIVE YOUR BIBLE
The joint statement of the XX International Catholic-Jewish Liaison Committee Meeting, held in
Madrid (13-16 October 2013) states that “Jews and Christians share the heritage of the Biblical
testimony of God’s relationship with the human family throughout history!” On 26 June 2015, six
Christians (Roman Catholics in fact) and three Jews in the United States of America had the
opportunity to bear witness to that testimony while considering what constitutes Marriage. Sadly,
five of them chose not to open their Bibles and as a result, as members of the United States
Supreme Court, voted to define Marriage according to the dictates of something other than their
shared heritage.
Please join me in giving thanks to God for the four Roman Catholics (Chief Justice John G. Roberts,
Jr., Associate Justice Antonin Scalia, Associate Justice Clarence Thomas, and Associate Justice
Samuel Anthony Alito, Jr.) who opened their Bibles to give witness to the Truth about Marriage.
Please join me in turning to God on behalf of the two other Roman Catholics (Associate Justice
Anthony M. Kennedy and Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor) and the three Jews (Associate Justice
Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Associate Justice Stephen G. Breyer, and Associate Justice Elena Kagan) who
instead gave witness to an opinion about Marriage, and with the words of the One betrayed let us
pray: “Father forgive them, for they know not what they do.”
The joint statement referenced earlier concludes with these words: “We see ourselves as partners in
healing our created world so that it
may reflect ever more brightly the
original Biblical vision: ‘And God saw
all that He had made, and behold it
was very good.’” If our world, our
nation, and our families are ever
going to shine brightly, then
Catholics and Jews better find their
Bibles, open their Bibles, read their
Bibles, and live their Bibles. If we
don’t do this, the world will continue
to grow dark: not because we’ve
extinguished the sun, but rather
because we’ve extinguished the Son!

The Family - 9. The Children (II)
Dear Brothers and Sisters, Good morning,
In this series of Catecheses on the family, today we are completing our reflection on children, who are the
most beautiful gift and blessing that the Creator has given to man and woman. We have already spoken
about the great gift that children are. Today sadly we must speak about the “passions” which many of them
endure.
From the first moments of their lives, many children are rejected, abandoned, and robbed of their childhood
and future. There are those who dare to say, as if to justify themselves, that it was a mistake to bring these
children into the world. This is shameful! Let’s not unload our faults onto the children, please! Children are
never a “mistake”. Their hunger is not a mistake, nor is their poverty, their vulnerability, their abandonment
— so many children abandoned on the streets — and neither is their ignorance or their helplessness... so
many children don’t even know what a school is. If anything, these should be reasons to love them all the
more, with greater generosity. How can we make such solemn declarations on human rights and the rights
of children, if we then punish children for the errors of adults?
Those who have the task of governing, of educating, but I would say all
adults, we are responsible for children and for doing what we can to
change this situation. I am referring to “the passion” of children. Every
child who is marginalized, abandoned, who lives on the street begging with
every kind of trick, without schooling, without medical care, is a cry that
rises up to God and denounces the system that we adults have set in place.
And unfortunately these children are prey to criminals who exploit them
for shameful trafficking or commerce, or train them for war and violence.
But even in so-called wealthy countries many children live in dramatic
situations that scar them deeply because of crises in the family,
educational gaps and at times inhuman living conditions. In every case,
their childhood is violated in body and soul. But none of these children are
forgotten by the Father who is in heaven! Not one of their tears is lost!
Neither is our responsibility lost, the social responsibility of people, of each
one of us, and of countries.
Once Jesus rebuked His disciples because they sent away the children whose parents brought them to Him to
be blessed. It is a moving Gospel narrative: “Then children were brought to Him that He might lay His hands
on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people; but Jesus said, ‘Let the children come to Me, and do
not hinder them; for to such belongs the Kingdom of Heaven.’ And He laid His hands on them and went
away” (Mt 19:13-15). How beautiful is this trust of the parents and Jesus’ response! How I would like this
passage to become the norm for all children! It is true that by the grace of God children in grave difficulty
are often given extraordinary parents, ready and willing to make every sacrifice. But these parents should
not be left alone! We should accompany them in their toil, and also offer them moments of shared joy and
lighthearted cheer, so that they are not left with only routine therapy.
When it comes to children, no matter what, there should
be no utterance of those legal defense-like formulas:
“after all, we are not a charity”, or, “in private, everyone is
free to do as he or she wishes”, or even, “we’re sorry but
we can’t do anything”. These words do not count when it
comes to children.
Too often the effects of a life worn down by precarious
and underpaid work, unsustainable hours, bad transport
rebound on the children.... Children also pay the price for
immature unions and irresponsible separations: they are
the first victims; they suffer the outcome of a culture of
exaggerated individual rights, and then the children become more precocious. They often absorb the
violence they are not able to “ward off” and before the very eyes of adults are forced to grow accustomed to
degradation.
Also in our age, as in the past, the Church sets her motherhood at the service of children and their families.
To parents and children of this world of ours, she bears the blessing of God, motherly tenderness, a firm
reproach and strong condemnation. Children are no laughing matter!
Think what a society would be like if it decided, once and for all, to establish this principle: “It’s true, we are
not perfect and we make many mistakes. But when it comes to the children who come into the world, no
sacrifice on the part of adults is too costly or too great, to ensure that no child believe he or she was a
mistake, is worthless or is abandoned to a life of wounds and to the arrogance of men”. How beautiful a
society like this would be! I say that for such a society, much could be forgiven, innumerable errors. Truly a
great deal.
The Lord judges our life according to what the angels of children tell him, angels who “always behold the
face of the Father who is in heaven” (cf. Mt 18:10). Let us always ask ourselves: what will the children’s
guardian angels tell God about us?
Looking for a Miracle?”

Us?
Shortly before Christmas 2014, Our Holy Redeemer's outdoor lift became
inoperable. And while it could be repaired (again) at a cost of a few thousand
dollars, I have decided, after going “up and down” that route a few times before,
that Our Holy Redeemer has spent enough money on repairs and that it makes more
(dollars and) sense to replace it an estimated cost (based on the figures of three
proposals) of $40,000.00. In order to help offset that cost, the Parish has reached
out to (and is waiting to hear from) Nassau County, the Village of Freeport, and
private charitable organizations that grant funds for services that assist the elderly
and disabled. Any assistance you can provide will literally give us a lift!

Scripture Reflection
The awesome value of the Eucharist is very clear from today’s texts. Elijah eats a divinely provided
cake and “strengthened by that food, he walked forty days and forty nights.” The Psalmist invites
us to “taste and see how good the Lord is” and finally we hear Jesus declare that He is “the bread
that came down from heaven,” and furthermore, “whoever eats this bread will live forever.” (See
1Kings 19:4-8, Psalm 34 and John 6:41-51) It is also easy to understand why so many Catholics
treasure the Eucharist so much that they come to receive it on a daily basis. The reason is clear,
they want to be strengthened to live the Christian life, they want to taste and see how good the
Lord is, they want to say yes to the gift of the Father, they want to receive the bread that came
down from heaven and live forever. How is it then that some of us only go to Mass when we feel
like it or when there is a special occasion? Perhaps this is due to poor understanding of what we
receive in Holy Communion? Do you know someone like this? Can you help him or her to grow in
their understanding of the bread of Heaven? In doing so, you would be inviting them to a banquet capable of
strengthening them to live the Christian life, capable of helping them to see how God really is, and ultimately, capable
of giving them eternal life.

FAITH AND STEWARDSHIP
(WITH HELP FROM SAINT PAUL)
Let us imitate the Apostle just as he imitates Christ
From the first letter of the apostle Paul to the Corinthians, IV:1-16
Men should regard us as servants of Christ and
administrators of the mysteries of God. The first
requirement of an administrator is that he prove
trustworthy. It matters little to me whether you or
any human court pass judgment on me. I do not even
pass judgment on myself. Mind you, I have nothing
on my conscience. But that does not mean that I am
declaring myself innocent. The Lord is the one to
judge me, so stop passing judgment before the time
of His return. He will bring to light what is hidden in
darkness and manifest the intentions of hearts. At
that time, everyone will receive his praise from God.
Brothers, I have applied all this to myself and Apollos by way of example for your benefit. May you
learn from us not to go beyond what is set down, so that none of you will grow self-important by
reason of his association with one person rather than another. Who confers any distinction on you?
Name something you have that you have not received. If, then, you have received it, why are you
boasting as if it were your own? At the moment you are completely satisfied. You have grown rich!
You have launched upon your reign with no help from us. Would that you had really begun to reign,
that we might be reigning with you!
As I see it, God has put us apostles at the end of the line, like men doomed to die in the arena. We
have become a spectacle to the universe, to angels and men alike. We are fools on Christ’s account.
Ah, but in Christ you are wise! We are the weak ones, you the strong! They honour you, while they
sneer at us! Up to this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, poorly clad, roughly treated, wandering
about homeless. We work hard at manual labor. When we are insulted we respond with a blessing.
Persecution comes our way; we bear it patiently. We are slandered, and we try conciliation. We have
become the world’s refuse, the scum of all; that is the present state of affairs.
I am writing you in this way not to shame you but to admonish you as my beloved children. Granted
you have ten thousand guardians in Christ, you have only one father. It was I who begot you in Christ
Jesus through my preaching of the Gospel. I beg you, then, be imitators of me.
A NATURAL AND
SUPERNATURAL GIFT
Relationship to Lived Experience
REFLECTION
Many neighbourhoods are blessed to have a married couple on the block who are the true
community makers. This is the couple on whom everyone counts to generate enthusiasm for
the block party or to make the first welcoming visit to new arrivals. When this special couple
also happens to be Christian, their positive influence gives the Church a good name. People
seek their opinion on moral questions or ask them to pray for their loved ones. They seem to
enjoy working together in the yard and on church projects. Their dinner table always has room
for another teenager. In such a couple, people witness the natural and supernatural
dimensions of marriage in the flesh.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
1. Think of a couple whose marriage you admire. Why do you admire them? What would you
say are their best qualities?
2. What seems to make a marriage strong, despite the flaws of the spouses?
3. In what ways can your marriage become a gift to other people, not only to each other?
4. What practical steps could you take to extend encouragement or support to another couple
who are struggling?
5. What signs do you see that the love of a husband and wife benefits society? How have
society’s images of masculinity and femininity changed since your parents’ day? How are
they the same?
JOURNALING QUESTIONS
1. How has your spouse been a gift to you?
2. What would you like to do for your spouse that would express your love in a special way?
Write down a plan for doing it, and follow your plan.
3. A couple who need our encouragement and prayers are ______________________. What can
we do for them, individually or together? (Some suggestions: Babysit for their children while
the couple goes on a date; write them a note of encouragement; invite them to work with us
on a project in the parish or neighborhood.)

No
Jesús dijo: “Dejadlos, no
A menu do absorben
de s us familias.

I AM THE
LIVING BREAD
Jesus said to the Jews,
“Amen, amen, I say to
you, whoever believes has
eternal life. I am the
Bread of Life. Your
ancestors ate manna in
the desert, but they
died; this is the Bread
that comes down from
Heaven so that one may
eat it and not die. I am
the living Bread that
came down from Heaven;
whoever eats this Bread
will live forever; and the
Bread that I will give is
My flesh for the life
of the world.”
