The end of the year is sidling up (or the end of the world, depending on whom you ask); in Havana this
translates into stellar cultural events, fake, flammable Christmas trees draped in twinkling lights, and lettuce
for sale by the wheelbarrow. If you’re headed to this inimitable city, or are already here, you can make
indelible travel memories at any one of these happenings, hand-picked by me, your resident author/culture
vulture.
34 Festival del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano
The “Havana Film Fest” as it’s informally known, is always a good time,
with movies shown at theaters citywide from 10am until ‘round
midnight. There are a few Cuban films in competition and many Latin
American entrants, plus scores of movies from around the globe
(these last don’t compete). Cubans are huge movie buffs, with some
taking their annual vacation at this time to spend it in the cinema; if
those sound like kindred spirits, I suggest you get a Festival Passport,
which provides multiple entrances (and more manageable lines). The
concerts (e.g. Fito Paez, Dec 5, Karl Marx Theater) and parties hosted
during the Festival are legendary. Top tip: for star sightings, grab a
mojito and kick back on a couch in the patio of the Hotel Nacional –
de facto headquarters of the Festival.
December 4-14
Play Ball!
Cuban baseball is world renowned, but it has taken some punches
recently: soccer is on the ascendancy (especially among the younger
set); Havana’s second-tier team The Metropolitanos was summarily
disbanded this year; and rule changes and a recess between January 31
and April 4 have fans up in arms. Still, day or night out at the “Coloso
del Cerro” (Estadio Latinoamericano – Cuba’s biggest, holding 50,000)
for an Industriales game is an opportunity to see baseball in a purer
form, free of advertising and schmaltz. Top tip: Go for the cheaper
bleacher seats to get into the local mix and bring something to sit on:
the cement stands are hard on the nalgas.

Festival Internacional Jazz Plaza
Havana’s Jazz Fest brings players from around the world and the
“patio” (how Cubans refer to the island) to jam, improvise, rip, bop, and
shred. This edition is shaping up to be a global party with players from
Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, Mozambique, Sweden and the United States
– including the young trumpet phenom from San Francisco Will Magid
and his quartet. Main venues include the Teatro Mella; Casa de Cultura
Plaza; and Sala Tito Junco (Café Teatro Bertol Brecht). Top tip: Keep
your ears peeled for locations of late-night jams and don’t miss
concerts by salsa giants Los Van Van and Pupy y Los Que Son Son.

Dúo Buena Fe
The strength of this group lies in their poignant lyrics, musical prowess, and the intelligence to put them
together in a way palatable to both the powers that be and huge swaths of Cuban youth. This concert will be
special since it’s being held at the historically significant and picturesque Escalinata de la Universidad de la
Habana, and it’s free! Top tip: Expect huge crowds – if you want to get close, access from Calle L is your best
bet; to hang back, sidle up from San Lázaro. The light will be good for this 5pm show: bring a camera.

Peña de Pancho Amat
This monthly event by Cuba’s greatest living tres player and his group
Cabildo del Son at the temporary digs of the Museo Nacional de la
Música is one of my all-time favorite musical events and is not to be
missed. Pancho Amat is not only a virtuoso player, he’s also a
respected ethnomusicologist, and mentor to up-and-coming players
who sit in with him at these gigs. Recommended for anyone interested
in traditional Cuban music. Top tip: Things can get loud in this
intimate space – earplugs can be handy.

Descemer Bueno
What to say about this electric, charismatic Grammy-nominee that hasn’t already been said? The songwriting
and lyricism, the infectious funk and jams Descemer and crew bring to the stage, and the duos with the
cream of Cuba’s music crop (e.g. Baby Lores, Israel Rojas from Buena Fe) mean a guaranteed fun night out.
This concert promises to be especially memorable since Descemer is filming his first DVD at the recently
renovated Sala Covarrubias of the Teatro Nacional. Top tip: Buy your tickets at the box office a few days
before as it’s likely this show will sell out.

One of the most eagerly awaited events
of the year, the New Latin American
International Film Festival has served as
a launch pad for Latin American
cinematography and become one of the
leading film festivals of the region. Over
500 films from 46 countries will be
enjoyed by the millions of film buffs
during the event. Twenty-one feature
films contend for the Grand Prize. One
of the most important attractions is the
film "No”, a coproduction from Chile-USMexico, which is preceded by its success
at Cannes and for being nominated for
the Oscar as best foreign film. Another
premiere not included in the
competition is the much awaited “7 Days
in Havana” seven stories written by
seven different directors who aim to
make a portrait of the Cuban capital in
2011.

for the feast of San Lazaro

This is another side of Cuba far away
from tropical beaches, vintage cars and
Tropicana dancers. The Pilgrimage to
Rincón for the feast of San Lázaro every
December 17 is a reminder of the fusion
of Afro Cuban Santeria with the Catholic
church. This is based on the Lazarus
parable in Luke 16:19-31 and combined
with Babalú-Ayé, a deity of the Yoruba
pantheon. There is an intensity and
devotion apparent in many the pilgrims,
which makes any visit a deeply moving
one and gives visitors an insight into this
part of the Cuban psyche.

describing to people how to get there.
Apart from that it is all good. Ivan is the
chef and he has taken many of the best
dishes from the excellent Havana Chef,

costillas de cordero (lamb ribs),
ensalada de pulpo (octopus salad)
mushroom and cheese risotto, lamb
shoulder and excellent soups. The place

in Havana?

In the last couple of years the Havana dining scene has been growing nonstop with more paladares,
different cuisine options, innovative interior decors and interesting menus. Nevertheless, as much as
some of the new (and old) options are an “UP,” many paladares have also shown some “DOWNS.” Here
we mention a few of the “ups” and “downs” found recently in the restaurants and bars of the city.
DOWNS:
Wine selection at Rio Mar: This is a handsome paladar in
Miramar, in the area known as La Puntilla. It is located by the water,
the view is great and the décor is gorgeous. Nevertheless this paladar
has failed to deliver wine options for the drinkers looking for an
unexpensive food-friendly red. In the last visits we have been
presented not with a wine list but with an array of bottles with
complicated labels from France, Spain, Argentina and Chile with prices
ranging from 35 to 85 cucs per bottle. Come on! What about an
unpretentious Villa Maipo or Santa Digna for the unpretentious
drinkers?
The waitress’ attitude at La Carboncita: La Carboncita is one of the best pizza places in town, service
is quick, food is delicious, prices are more than affordable and the owner is super kind and friendly to say the
least. Unfortunately that friendliness is a characteristic that most of the female waiters at the place do not
share. In the last visits they were unhelpful, dismissive and rude. One of them gave us a table with three chairs
(while we were four) and never volunteered to bring a chair or look for one, and then demanded our order one

minute after handing us one menu for all of us… she looked quite unhappy when we asked for a couple of extra
minutes and more menus. Anyway girls, the restaurant is already great, wouldn’t hurt to wear a smile once in a
while! Get rid of that ‘tude.
The flies at Dr. Café: This is a real down and a real pity. The restaurant is far from spectacular in terms of
its décor, but it is really great when it comes to its grilled entrees, such as the barbecue ribs, the beef filet, the
chorizos (or sausages), plus other options such as the lobster, shrimp kebab and garlic shrimp just to name a
few. The prices are good, the wine options are plenty but so are the flies… yes, the flies! If you choose the
outdoor sitting option prepare yourself to be fighting against an army of flies through your meal. My
suggestion for Doctor Café: more fans and more fumigating.
The fiddler at Chaplin’s: This fairly new paladar in Miramar has really good-looking indoor and outdoor
sitting areas. The food options are good and the prices reasonable. Nevertheless the management has decided
(I am sure with good intentions) to provide entertainment for the evening guests in form of a fiddler with a
very limited repertoire. In one of the recent visits we listened to the same songs three to four times. My
suggestion to the fiddler: increase your repertoire or take longer breakes.
UPS:
The mojito at Partenon: This has been an “up” since Javier Acosta (the owner) opened this paladar in
Miramar almost two years ago. The mojito is a multi-sensory experience: it is not only beautiful to look at, it is
refreashing, tasty and, given its size, challenging. Each mojito is made at the moment you order, so instead of
pre-made mixes, you get fresh squeezed lime and mint “du jour.” I would not be afraid to say it is the best
mojito in Havana and it is worth the trip to Partenon where one can also find some of the best food and
service in town.
The oxtail at La Comercial: According to my dinning accomplices this could be one of the best kept
secrets in Havana. The oxtail in La Comercial is indeed a mouth-watering experience, a hearty stew with
obvious hours of careful and skillful cooking behind it. The dish is served to your plate from beautiful antique
bowls and it is usually advisable to match it with a starchy side dish: mashed potatoes or white rice will do.
Bar stools at Casa Miglis: Named as the Best Paladar in Centro Havana by Cuba Absolutely, Casa Miglis
has done many things right since its opening almost a year ago. The food is good, the prices are affordable, the
service is fast and friendly, and the décor is fun, eclectic and modern. Nevertheless the barstools stand out:
they are antique wooden dining room chairs suported by a rod that gives them appropiate height of a bar
stool. They are fun and they are original. Stop for a drink and see them for your self!
Birthday brownie at Café Laurent: This “up” is a great example
that it doesn’t take a lot to make a great impresion. Just recently
celebrating a birthday with a group of friends in the beautiful Café
Laurent, the management volunteered a delicious brownie, on the
house, with a candle and even brought the wait staff to join in the
singing of “Felicidad” the traditional birthday song in Cuba. May
seemed small, but it brought a lot of smiles to our table. And, I have to
say that the brownie was delicious, we end up ordering more of those…
so, even if it is not your birthday consider tasting this amazing dessert.
