Un entusiasmo contenido por
un año de espera se desbordó el
jueves 14 de abril en la Plaza de
El Álamo con motivo de “Fiesta
Fiesta”, el evento que da la señal
de partida a diez días ininterrum
pidos de desfiles, baile, coloridos
atuendos y coronación de reinas:
Fiesta San Antonio 2016 en su
125 aniversario.
Gracias a la planeación es
merada de directivos, empleados
y miles de voluntarios de Fiesta
Commission, la fiesta de todas
las fiestas empezó brillante en
un escenario frente a la Misión
de El Álamo, con una multitud
entusiasta que –aparte de disfru
tar las amenidades– se dedicó al
acostumbrado intercambio, com
pra y adquisición de medallas
de las diversas instituciones y
empresas que distribuyen meda
llas conmemorativas.
El público empezó a reunirse
antes de las 5 de la tarde y para
el momento de la inauguración
oficial – a las 7 de la noche– no
había un espacio frente a la Mis
sion de El Álamo para aplaudir
a los a las reinas de diferentes
organizaciones y a las cortes del
Rey Feo LXVII, Darren Casey,
y la del Rey Antonio XCIV
Hunt Winton III, que estaban
en el escenario con Vonzetta
Hickman, presidenta de Fiesta
Commission.
También recibió una calurosa
recepción Ivy Taylor, alcaldesa
de la ciudad de San Antonio,
dando un reconocimiento a la
organización de Fiesta y a los
miles de voluntarios que hacen
posible esta celebración que gen
era dividendos por dos millones
de dólares para la economía de
la ciudad.

cilio de la Ciudad de San Antonio
asistió el Concejal del Distrito
No. 1, Roberto Treviño.
Las celebraciones de Fiesta
2016 continúan para el resto de
la semana. La coronación del
Rey Feo frente a la Catedral de
San Fernando se llevó acabo el
viernes 15 de abril a las 5:30 p.m.
La lista de actividades para el
fin de semana comprende de 29
eventos para el sábado 16, entre

raises awareness to end violence

According to Family Violence
Prevention Services, 74 percent
of all Texans have experienced
some form of domestic violence
or have a friend or family member
who has experienced it.
There are also 31 percent of all
Texans who have reported that
they have been severely abused
at some point in their lifetime.
Victims of domestic violence no
longer have to suffer thanks to
the support from not only family
and friends, but also a large com
munity who is raising awareness
this week.
District Attorney Nico LaHood,
alongside Mayor Ivy R. Taylor,
SAPD Chief William McManus,
Bexar County Sheriff Susan
Pamerleau and Bexar County
Judge Nelson Wolff announced
on Monday the start of National
Crime Victims’ Rights Week in
Bexar County. This year’s theme,
“Serving Victims, Building Trust
and Restoring Hope” reminds
us that our entire community of
victim service agencies play an
important role and are critical to
meeting victims where they are
and empowering them throughout
the healing process in the after
math of crime.
For Sheriff Pamerleau, it was
an opportunity to open the eyes of
the audience to listen to the voice
of the victims.
“Every day, the Bexar County
Sheriff’s Office responds to calls
from individuals who have been
victimized by crime and their in
juries may be physical, financial
or emotional and sometimes all
three, but these experiences can
last forever,” said Sheriff Pamer
leau. “We want to bring a voice
to those who in some cases, no
longer have a voice…We will
continue to stand with victims of
crime as they heal and recover.”
A majority of the time, San
Antonio hears about crimes hap
pening in our neighborhood
and within families. For Mayor
Taylor, it is time to put an end to
violence.
“We urge you to report it and
obtain the system. We urge the
community to support victims
through the healing process which
make take some time…with all
of us working together, we can
make things better. I can assure
you that your city leaders and
law enforcement agencies are
working hard with the community
to serve victims, for them to go
trust and restore hope,” concluded
Mayor Taylor.

together to plan events for Na
tional Crime Victims’ Rights

Back the Night—The Rape Crisis
Center and UTSA are partnering
to celebrate a community against
sexual violence at the annual Take
Back the Night event. Please
join them for a beautiful night of
celebrating empowerment and

mance, open mic spoken work
poetry, community art project,
a resource fair and a candlelight
vigil. The event will run from
6 – 8:30 p.m. on the UTSA Main
campus, Convocation Center

Fiesta has arrived and it is
time to break into a celebration
to expand higher education for
the community thanks to one city
organization.
This year, Webhead is holding
their third annual Cascarón Bash,
a fundraising celebration that will
benefit the San Antonio Education
Partnership (SAEP), featuring art,
appealing music, beer and even
pizza on a stick. The company
would like to invite the public
to the event on Tuesday, April
19 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Alamo
Beer Company, located at 202
Lamar St.

dion virtuoso Jesse Borrego, Sr.
and siblings Marina and James
are set to perform through the
evening embellishing the beer
garden ambience with the danc
ing tunes of cumbias, polkas,
boleros, and Tex-Mex Rockabilly
alongside life-size sculptures from
the ¡Paletas! Open-Air Exhibit by
David Blancas which will adorn
the exterior for this one night affair
in the name of charity.
The entire Paletas Sculpture
Series is on the silent auction
block via Bidr to help raise funds.
Bidding or making a donation will
be as easy as text.
For a donation of $40, attendees
will receive two complimentary
beer drafts, an onsite brewery tour,
a takeaway souvenir pint glass,
food provided by Alamo Pizza,
snacks by Al’s Gourmet Nuts,
a souvenir paleta fan and some
cascarónes to enjoy the night.
The package is not only for a
good time, but it is also for those
interested in pursuing a college
education and a stable job that
they love.
“As the president/CEO and a
first generation college student, I
wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for
my college degree,” Webhead
Founder and CEO Janie Martinez
Gonzalez told La Prensa. “In order
to help other minority students
succeed, I tied my organization’s
purpose into nonprofits focused
on educational success. I mainly
focus on education because nine
out of 10 employees need to have
a higher education.”
For the past 20 years, Webhead
has made significant contributions
creating high paying jobs and
giving back over $35,000 to the
community. This year, the com
pany decided to focus on SAEP
because they work on closing the
college education gap for students
by lending the guidance needed to
graduate from high school, enroll
in college and earn a college de
gree or certificate.
The partnership between the
SAEP and the students delivers
its key services annually through
three programs: Road to Suc
cess, the San Antonio Education
Partnership Scholarship and Café
College. For Gonzalez, it was
important for her to break into
her roots and regain the passion
she has for education to be able to
provide many students the power
to transition from education to the
workforce without any barriers
after high school.
“The process was one that the
nonprofit must benefit education,
the second part is that it must be
well established, the third criteria
is that we must have worked with
them in the past, and the final
criteria was for our employees
to support the organization,”
explained Gonzalez. “I’m a big
supporter of individual businesses
and always looking for organiza
tions to partner to learn so many
great things.”
Ultimately, for Gonzalez, her
company is ready for a fun filled
bash that will open the door to
many who are looking to not only
have fun, but to also remember a
night of learning.
“This year, there is a big focus
on education and arts. It is more
of a cultural arts experience with
great food, indoor prizes, giant
paletas, great music, as well as
the excitement of breaking the
cascarónes, just a good old gettogether,” concluded Gonzalez.

Lawyer becomes senior citizen activist after saving mother’s life

I have been a lawyer for 32 years
but since December 2013, I have
been an activist. This is my story.
A few days after Christmas, in
2013, my beloved mother at the
age of 91 suffered a left brain stroke
while being treated in the Methodist
Hospital. Like a thief in the night,
the stroke occurred while she slept.
Her treating neurologist ex
plained the significance of the
left brain stroke. It impaired her
ability to swallow. It robbed her of
the ability to talk. It paralyzed her
right side.
Nevertheless, despite these grim
results, he was absolutely emphatic
on one point: mom’s vital signs
were very strong and she was not a
hopeless case.
“If your mother was a hopeless
case, I would tell you so,” he told
me. “I’ve had to have those difficult
conversations with families many
times—and I am telling you—your
mother is not hopeless,” he stated.
His recommendation was very
clear.
First—save mom’s life with
a PEG Tube. The tube would be
inserted into her abdominal wall
surgically. It would permit mom to
receive medicine and liquid nutri
tion. It would allow her to build
her strength.
Second—mom would be trans
ferred to a skilled nursing facil
ity for physical rehabilitation. She
would continue to have all forms of
therapy—speech, occupational and
physical therapy.
After a certain length of time,
mom would be transferred home,
where her therapy could continue.
One of the things that the doctor
emphasized was the need to have
patience—our mother suffered a
major stroke—but she was a strong
woman with strong vital signs.
The neurologist stated that it
was impossible to tell how much
progress she would make—that
would be a function of many fac
tors—including God.
I agreed and authorized the
surgery.
Within the next couple of days,
I noticed a different doctor appear
on mom’s hospital wing. He didn’t
speak to us—only staff. He read
through reports.
Finally, after a few days, he came
into mom’s room and asked who
was responsible for the decisions
pertaining to Eleanor Quintanilla.
I spoke up.
“What are your plans for your
mother?” he asked.
When I began to describe the
PEG Tube and subsequent therapy,
this doctor began to shake his head
vigorously.
This doctor worked for my moth
er’s Medicare Advantage Insurance
Company.
“I am sorry to tell you, but I dis
agree with this course of action,”
he said.
He explained that mom has
already been receiving physical
therapy over the past few days there
in her hospital room—and she has
already “plateaued.”
I objected to this doctor’s ob
servation.
“Doctor, you understand that my
mother is 91 years old—just had
a massive left brain stroke a few
days ago—cannot swallow—has
not been able to eat anything—and
your opinion is in direct conflict
with the treating physician, who is
a neurologist,” I pointed out.
The insurance company doctor
persisted.
“This is the best advice that I can
give to you,” he stated. “Remember
your mother the way that she used
to be. Refer her to our Hospice Divi
sion. We will keep her comfortable
with medicine—morphine. We will
let nature take its course.”
I cut that doctor off immedi
ately—and fired him.
Later that night, I was so angry at
the insurance company, I was deter
mined to make a switch. I promised
myself that I would find a way—
that I would stay up all night long
if necessary—but I would find a
way to switch insurance companies.
Around 3 a.m., I came across
a landmark federal court lawsuit
nearly one year old, Jimmo vs.
Sebelius.
Under the Jimmo case, the fed
eral court ruled in a class action
lawsuit that the “Plateau Standard”
was illegal.
Yes—you read this right. The
same day that a doctor implored me
to put mom into Hospice—to deny
her a PegTube—to basically starve
her to death—on the basis that she
had “plateaued” after a few days in
the hospital—on that next day in the
wee hours of the morning, I found
a federal lawsuit that ruled that the
“Plateau Standard” was illegal and
must never be used again to deny
Medicare recipients therapy.
From that day on, I became an
activist on behalf of senior citizens,
the disabled and the poor.
You see, when that doctor made
that comment about putting my
mom in Hospice, he didn’t know
anything about her.
He didn’t know that her son that
he was speaking to was a lawyer
with 32 years of experience litigat
ing in both state and federal court—
that I attended law school at The
University of Texas at Austin—that
I was the editor in chief of one of
the law reviews.

Comentarios... La primavera mexicana
Regresar a
México me
llena de vida
y, por alguna
razón, siem
pre creo que
voy a ver

bios. Pero, casi siempre me quedo
esperando.
Tengo mi rutina para regresar.
Mi primera parada, muchas veces,
es para comprar unos churrumais
— frituras de maíz con limón y
chile o para comerme unos tacos
al pastor. Eso me devuelve a mi
adolescencia y al país que dejé. Me
fui de México hace 33 años, pero
México no se ha ido de mí.
Mientras más tiempo paso fuera
de México, más aprecio lo que
dejé. En mi última visita vi mon
tones de familias, de la mano,
paseando, regalándose frecuentes
gestos de cariño (creo que los niños
mexicanos son de los más apa
pachados y besados del mundo).
Caí en comidas largas, sin prisa
y con sobremesa. En México la
comida es un ritual en que el alma
y la boca se entrelazan como sopa
de fideos.
Lo que más me gusta de México
son sus intangibles, esas cosas que
no se pueden tocar pero que te
alimentan por dentro. En México
nunca me he sentido solo. En
cambio, la vida en Estados Unidos
puede ser muy solitaria para los
inmigrantes, sobre todo en Navidad
y en días de fiesta.
Me gustan las fiestas mexicanas
que rompen con la rutina, por algo
les llaman reventones, y el uso del
humor para balancear momen
táneamente nuestras desigual
dades. Criticar, sí, es una forma de
querer a México.
Admiro esa sana y clara distan
cia del mexicano con sus gober
nantes y con sus jefes. No les creen
nada. Antes dudábamos del tlatoani
azteca y de los virreyes españoles.
Hoy dudamos del presidente y de
los “mirreyes” (ese grupito de ricos
y prepotentes que ahorcan al resto
del país).
Después de tantos sexenios de
abusos, escándalos y engaños,
México se ha convertido en un
país de incrédulos. Y a mí, eso
me parece muy saludable; todo
cambio se inicia sospechando de
la autoridad, de las tradiciones y de
las conductas aprendidas.
Pero ¿viene el cambio?
En México nunca pasa nada,
me dijo un amigo y corresponsal
extranjero afincado en el país hace
varios años. Entiendo por qué lo
dice. Más del 98 por ciento de los
crímenes permanece en la impuni
dad, según la Comisión Interameri
cana de Derechos Humanos. Pero
en México, sí están pasando cosas.
“Pasan cosas”, para robarme la
frase del periodista colombiano Ju
lio Sánchez Cristo cuando muchísi
mos mexicanos ya no le creen a su
presidente, Enrique Peña Nieto, y
lo dicen en la calle y en las redes
sociales. ¿Cómo creerle cuando
él y su esposa le compran una
casa de 7 millones de dólares a un
contratista gubernamental?
Gracias a los llamados Papeles
de Panamá, ahora sabemos que ese
contratista, Juan Armando Hino
josa Cantú, dueño del grupo Higa,
envió 100 millones de dólares de
su fortuna en paraísos fiscales poco
después que se inició la investiga
ción de la Casa Blanca mexicana.
(¿Habrá ahí algo que investigar don
Virgilio?).
Pasan cosas en México cuando
con un diario pase de lista no olvi
damos a los 43 jóvenes de Ayotzi
napa. ¿Y cómo resaltar lo positivo
cuando ha habido 52 mil muertes
violentas en los últimos tres años
y el de Peña Nieto podría ser el
sexenio más violento de nuestra
historia moderna? Veo con espe
ranza las denuncias y protestas de
muchos mexicanos indignados y
frustrados. El mensaje es claro: No
nos vamos a dejar.
Algunos creían que esa indig
nación y frustración se convertiría
en una pacífica rebelión ciudadana,
obligaría a renunciar a altos funcio
narios y daría un golpe de timón
al país. Por ejemplo, el primer
ministro de Islandia se apartó
de su puesto por acusaciones de
corrupción tras la publicación de
los Papeles de Panamá. Pero en
México, todo sigue igual. Nadie re
nunció tras las denuncias de la Casa
Blanca, ni de la fuga del Chapo, ni
de las matanzas de Ayotzinapa y
Tlatlaya.
Hay grandes cambios en Gua
temala, Argentina, Brasil y Vene
zuela. Y millones de mexicanos se
preguntan ¿cuándo nos toca a no
sotros? Quizá nuestra fuerza radica
más en resistir que en exigir. ¿Por
qué no aceptar la creación de una
Comisión Internacional contra la
Impunidad en México, dependiente
de Naciones Unidas, al igual que se
hizo en Guatemala? Sería un buen
primer paso.
Sí, ya sé. En México siempre
da la impresión de que algo está a
punto de reventar... y no revienta.
Pero lo viejo y lo corrompido, no
acaban de morir.
Por eso, hace varias primaveras
que estamos esperando la primave
ra mexicana.

125th celebra
tion of Fiesta
is history as
we get ready
to continue

week’s finale
of fun and festivities around the
Alamo City.
The record turnout so far has
been noted as Bexar County resi
dents gear up for another round of
partying, attending parades, con
certs, and experiencing all kinds
of food at various venues.
Tomorrow, hundreds of thou
sands of people will line the
banks of the San Antonio River
to view the most unusual parade
in America...the Texas Cavaliers
River Parade!
This year’s parade, entitled
“River of Champions,” promises
an evening of family fun with
live music, celebrities and lights.
More than 40 festively decorated
floats, sponsored by local com
munity organizations and military
installations, drift down the river.
King Antonio XCIV will reign
over the evening’s festivities and
give a Texas sized welcome to the
enthusiastic spectators along the
winding route.
Founded in San Antonio in
1926, The Texas Cavaliers is a
local civic and patriotic organiza
tion. Their mission is to honor the
memory of the heroes that fell at
the Alamo and to raise money for
children’s charities throughout
Bexar County. Tickets range from
$12-$25.
Tuesday will be Fiesta Especial
Celebration Day, a one-day event
for individuals with disabilities
and their schools, programs and
families. Advanced registration
is required. No general admission
will be allowed at the gate. As a
retired teacher who taught special
education for years, I am partial to
this particular event during Fiesta.
The event takes place from 10
a.m.-3 p.m. at the Alamodome.
Also beginning on Tuesday for
four consecutive nights, the histor
ic downtown village of La Villita
takes center stage as 85,000 visi
tors, gather each night to celebrate
the city’s unique heritage at “A
Night in Old San Antonio.” More
than 250 elaborately decorated
food and drink booths and more
than a dozen nonstop entertain
ment stages represent the diverse
cultures and customs of our city.
NIOSA, the largest historic
preservation festival in the nation,
provides resources for the San
Antonio Conservation Society’s
restoration and rehabilitation of
historic properties in the San Anto
nio community. The San Antonio
Conservation Society was formed
in 1924 to preserve and encour
age the preservation of historic
buildings, customs relating to the
history of Texas, and to educate
the public on those values.
Adult admission is $12 pre-sale
and $15 at the gate. Children 12
years and under are free at the gate
when accompanied by an adult.
On Thursday, April 21, from 10
a.m.-6 p.m., St. Philip’s Culture
Fest will celebrate the rich heritage
of San Antonio and cultural influ
ences of St. Philip’s College as
one of San Antonio’s most histori
cally, distinguished and ethnically
diverse institutions in higher learn
ing. As a former adjunct instruc
tor at the campus, I am looking
forward to covering this event for

St. Philip’s College, established
in 1898, is among the oldest and
most diverse community colleges
in the nation. It is the only college
in the nation with the dual des
ignation as a Historically Black
College and Hispanic Serving
Institution with an enrollment of
over 11,000 credit and 6,200 con
tinuing education students.
This year, the Battle of Flowers
will be on Friday, April 22 and
will celebrate its anniversary with
the parade theme: “Texas Tradi
tions…125 Years!” The parade
embodies the culture, pastimes and
humor that have been characteris
tic of Texans from one generation
to the next.
Having ridden in the parade as
a Balcones Heights councilman in
the past and covering it for years as
a photographer, the three hour plus
parade is one of the more exciting
events for me.
As I have mentioned in my last
two columns on Fiesta, the Grand
Marshal for this year’s parade is
internationally acclaimed singer
and motivational speaker Doctor
Patsy Torres. Since I have known
her as a friend for nearly 20 years,
I am especially looking forward to
once again covering this parade.

miento de delegados en el estado
de Colorado el pasado 8 de abril.
Dichos delegados fueron elegidos
a través de una convención local
y no por medio del voto popular.
Estaban en juego 30 delegados.
Como Trump es un neófito en
la política, nunca tuvo una orga
nización adecuada para acumular
un porcentaje de estos delegados.
El senador Cruz lo madrugó, le dio
un golpe en plena sien y le arrebató
los 30. El pobre Trump se quedó
sin nada.
Fue una derrota vergonzosa
porque claramente hizo notar su
falta de conocimientos sobre el
proceso electoral de las primarias.
Queda claro, entonces, que no
tiene idea de la forma cómo son
elegidos los delegados. Tampoco
se da cuenta que, llegado el mo
mento, sus propios delegados le
pueden abandonar sin considerar
su agenda política.
Por consiguiente, Trump no
entiende que el proceso electoral
de las primarias es un proceso que
elige al candidato oficial de su par
tido en forma indirecta. Es decir,
cuando el electorado emite su voto,
los votantes están eligiendo a los
“delegados”, quienes, por su parte,
votan en una convención política y
deciden quién va a ser el candidato
de su partido político.
Como en otras oportunidades,
cuando el juego de la política le
acierta un golpe certero en la cabe
za, lo único que sabe hacer es abrir
su bocota, lanzar insultos y crear
más controversia a su alrededor.
El sistema electoral del Partido
Republicano es “fraudulento, te
rriblemente sucio”, manifestó.
En otras palabras, el empresario
de bienes raíces está llamando co
rruptos a sus dirigentes políticos.
Lo que es peor, está etiquetando
indirectamente a los delegados
como productos nocivos de un
sistema político altamente en
descomposición.
En este sentido, Trump no hace
más que cavar su propia fosa. En
vez de estar cortejando a los del
egados de su partido, los está ale
jando con su bocota de decibeles
ilimitados.
Trump puede tener el apoyo de
una gran mayoría del electorado
de los republicanos, pero en una
convención dislocada, son final
mente los “delegados” quienes
determinarán quién va a ser el
representante de los republicanos
en las elecciones presidenciales de
noviembre.
Trump tiene que dejar de pensar
como un niño y asumir su papel
de candidato político con respon
sabilidad.

los tres candidatos (Trump, Cruz
o Kasich) no lograrán acumular
los 1237 delegados, los cuales
son necesarios para nominar ofi
cialmente al candidato del Partido
Republicano de caras a las eleccio
nes presidenciales de noviembre.
En vez de relajar las tensiones y
unificar a un partido político que
ha sido vapuleado por todas partes,
Trump se ha dedicado a insultar a
sus correligionarios y deslegitimar
el sistema electoral de su propio
partido político.
No se da cuenta que al volver
a su estado normal de insultos,
el empresario de copete rojizo no
hace más que darle oportunidad a
sus detractores de aniquilarlo en
la convención que se aproxima en
julio de este año. En esta reunión,
los delegados estarán eligiendo

me a few months after her therapy.

Bajar de peso y tomar vitamina D para una mejor salud

Mi estimado lector, si le dieran la
opción en su desayuno de elegir de
entre un platillo compuesto de un
par de huevos rancheros acompa
ñado por chuleta de puerco y papas
fritas o de una ensalada de frutas,
jugo fresco, cereal, una rebanada
de pan tostado con miel y un par de
blanquillos revueltos, ¿por cuál de
los dos se inclinaría para comenzar
el día?
Ambos desayunos son preferidos
por quienes gustan del típico desa
yuno “fuerte”, que es el primero aquí
destacado. La segunda sugerencia
viene a ser un desayuno “liviano”, ya
que los productos que se consumen,
a las pocas horas, despiertan más el
apetito.
Sin embargo, personalmente les
diré ahora a los más de tres lectores.
El número de lectores de este
testimonio dedicado a la Salud au
mentó en los dos artículos que pub
liqué en ediciones pasadas, debido a
que se me diagnosticó padecimiento
de vértigo (mareo continuo).
Quienes desayunan fuerte corren
el riesgo de aumentar de peso y que
su sistema cardiovascular retenga
grasa en las arterias coronarias.
Mientras que las personas que
optan por tomar un desayuno li
viano pueden conservar su peso y
a la vez mantener un buen ritmo
cardiovascular.
En un reciente reportaje presenta
do por la influyente cadena de notici
eros CNN observé, detalladamente,
un segmento en el que se explica
a la comunidad sobre la obesidad,
indicando con altos números las
fatalidades que anualmente causa
en el mundo.
“La obesidad es peor que la
hambruna mundial, anualmente
cobra más vidas, la realidad es que
con tantos centros gastronómicos
de todas clases el consumidor no se
percata en el alto consumo de azu
cares que vienen en los productos,
así como las bebidas endulzadas. El
consumidor de productos con alto
contenido de calorías, así como se
alimenta, debería de tener concien
cia por dedicarle tiempo a realizar
cualquier tipo de ejercicios”, se dijo
en el mencionado segmento.
En lo personal, estoy de acuerdo
sobre lo que se informó en dicho
segmento.
Por ejemplo, yo no había notado
cuanta azúcar consumo en mis ali
mentos (en lo que es una dieta bal
anceada que me ha llevado a perder
más de 60 libras en el periodo de 16
años que he llevado de abstinencia
por bebidas embriagantes). Un
compañero de trabajo, me lo dijo
en breve: “No necesariamente tienes
que consumir cucharadas de azúcar.
Si te alimentas de frutas, legumbres
y cereal, en esos productos vienen
porciones breves de azúcar. Ahora
si a diario sumas todos los productos
que consumiste puedes sacarle un
promedio de cuando menos tres
cucharas del producto dulce”. Así
de claro me lo explicó mi estimado
compañero de labores.
Claro que le doy la razón, porque
los siete días de la semana con
sumo cereal, productos lácteos,
frutas, vegetales, carbohidratos,
blanquillos cocinados con mante
quilla descremada, carne de pollo y
pavo, pescado y camarones fritos,
acompañados de porciones chicas
de ensalada de repollo y espinacas.
Todos esos productos contienen un
sabor dulce agradable, por lo que
le vuelvo a dar la razón a mi com
pañero. Sin embargo, llevar dicha
dieta me ha ayudado a la pérdida de
peso y, de acuerdo al último chequeo
médico, se me dio la buena noticia
de que mi corazón sigue palpitando
normalmente, a pesar de que fui
diagnosticado hace veinte años con
alta presión arterial.
Cambiando de tema, les comen
taré a los más de tres lectores de las
buenas noticias que la revista trimes
tral Nutrition Express, con sede en
la ciudad de Torrance, California (la
cual conozco como la palma de mi
mano y que se ubica en el sector de
la península de San Pedro, condado
de Los Ángeles), en la cual en su sec
ción de tópicos “calientes” de salud
le da esperanzas al consumidor de
Vitamina D para evitar riesgos del
cáncer de mama y ayuda en el mejor
funcionamiento del cerebro para el
sector de adultos de la tercera edad.
En notas separadas se dijo que
mediante estudios médicos se llegó
a la conclusión de que mujeres en
edad de entrar a la menopausia, que
actualmente toman suplemento de
Vitamina D, tienen un 26 por ciento
menos para desarrollar cáncer de
mama en comparación a quienes
la han tomado en el pasado y mu
jeres que nunca la han tomado. Sin
embargo, para comenzar dicho
régimen tienen primeramente que
visitar a su doctor de cabecera para
que sea él quien se la recete o le de
consentimiento para que comience a
tomarla con regularidad o en perio
dos de acuerdo a sus necesidades.
Por igual, se recomienda al sec
tor de personas mayores, quienes
padecen de bajos niveles de Vitam
ina D, que con el consumo adecuado
de Vitamina D las personas estarán
evitando el incorrecto funciona
miento del cerebro.
El estudio fue enfocado en mu
jeres y varones de una edad pro
medio de 75 años, quienes se en
cuentran en el régimen de tomar
Vitamina D, corren menos riesgo
de ser diagnosticados con demencia.
En ese aspecto mi doctor hace
diez años me recetó dosis de Vi
tamina D de alto grado, la cual
estuve consumiendo en periodos de
una cápsula por semana (con receta
médica por escrito). Posteriormente,
tras finalizar con el tratamiento para
recuperar densidad en los huesos,
se me dio la opción de continuarla
tomando en menos densidad, pero
de forma diaria.
Hasta la fecha la he venido con
sumiendo a diario, salvo algunas
ocasiones en que por andar a la
carrera se me olvida tomarle. Pero
de acuerdo a últimos exámenes,
mi nivel de vitamina D se han
normalizado ha como lo preciso mi
estimado doctor.

que la siga tomando, ya no necesita

ly one in five children will face a
mental, emotional or behavioral
disorder. In Bexar County alone,
that’s 80,000 children. Of those,
only 20 percent will receive treat
ment, often due to a lack of access
to care.
Without proper treatment, chil
dren with mental illness are twice
as likely to abuse drugs and alco
hol and twice as likely to end up in
the juvenile justice system. Half of
them will drop out of school and
many will attempt suicide.
Clarity Child Guidance Center
is working to change those statis
tics and improve the lives of these
children and their families. Clarity
CGC is the region’s only not-forprofit organization that provides
a continuum of mental healthcare
for children ages 3–17.
At its newly expanded cam
pus in the South Texas Medical
Center, Clarity CGC provides
outpatient therapy for children and
families, day treatment (where the
child is treated at Clarity CGC dur
ing school hours and then returns
home each evening) and acute
inpatient hospitalization at its 72bed hospital. In addition, a clinic
on the West Side of San Antonio
provides fast, convenient access
to care. In 2015, Clarity CGC pro
vided care to nearly 8,000 children
and adolescents.
Clarity CGC offers the region’s
largest concentration of child and
adolescent psychiatrists through
its onsite affiliation with South
west Psychiatric Physicians. The
center is also a teaching hospital
for The University of Texas Health
Science Center San Antonio and
Baylor College of Medicine.
Clarity CGC’s legacy dates back
to 1886 when 13 San Antonio
women met at the Maverick Hotel
and founded an orphanage for chil
dren who had been left behind by
society. Because the children who
lived at the orphanage throughout
their entire childhood were most
often the children suffering from
mental, emotional and behavioral
disorders, the agency evolved over
decades to become a premier
resource for children in need of
mental health treatment.
Today Clarity CGC is one of the
biggest and most progressive pro
viders of children’s mental health
in the nation. Clarity’s unique
approach to treating children’s
mental health disorders is based
on the philosophy that children
generally want to do well and will
do so if given the opportunity.
For example, there are no fences

in his final NBA game
The Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Utah Jazz,

St. Mary’s has soared back into
the regional rankings following a
hot stretch that has seen the Rat
tlers win eight of their last nine
games.
St. Mary’s checked in at No. 9
in the latest National Collegiate
Baseball Writers Association
South Central Rankings. The
Rattlers (23-14) were one of four
Heartland Conference schools
represented, ranking third among
their league rivals.
St. Mary’s had a big weekend,
sweeping its three-game series
against Newman following a
convincing 14-9 victory in the
finale. Earlier in the week, the
Rattlers edged regional rival
Tarleton State. The Rattlers will
return to action this weekend with
a crucial three-game road series
at St. Edward’s in Austin, Texas.

Sophomore outfielder Bryce
Brandl has been named the Heart

Kyle Busch aprovechó el último
reinicio de la Duck Commander

Texas Motor Speedway para
llevarse la victoria y completar
su segunda barrida consecutiva,
con su cuarta victoria al hilo en
carreras de la NASCAR.
Busch ya había logrado las dos
victorias el fin de semana pasado
en Martinsville con banderas
a cuadros en las carreras de la
NASCAR Camping World Truck
Series y la NASCAR Sprint Cup.
Y en Texas hizo lo mismo en la
NASCAR XFINITY Series y la
Sprint Cup.
En pocas palabras, el piloto del
Toyota No. 18 prolongó su asom
brosa racha al lograr su victoria
número 36 en la Sprint Cup y su
segunda en Texas, donde había
conseguido una barrida en 2013.
Busch se convirtió en apenas
el segundo piloto en lograr bar
ridas en semanas consecutivas
desde que Harry Gant lo hizo en
1991, tras ganar las carreras de
la NASCAR XFINITY Series y
la NASCAR Sprint Cup en Rich
mond y Dover.
Con su victoria, Busch con
firmó su puesto para el Chase

19 aniversario de “Race for The Cure”

Con el objetivo de colectar un
millón de dólares y dedicarlos a la
investigación para curar el cáncer
del seno, el sábado 9 de abril una
multitud en color de rosa recorrió
el centro de la ciudad en la carrera/caminata del décimo noveno
aniversario de Susan Komer “Race
for The Cure”.
Un gran número de entidades
públicas y del sector privado,
así como instituciones médicas y
educativas, marcharon a pesar de
la posibilidad de tormenta desde
el Alamodome hacia un recorrido
de 5 millas para finalizar la carrera
o la caminata en el mismo punto
de partida.
Uno de los lemas de motivación
para este evento anual fue el recordar que la inscripción asegura un
lugar individual en la marcha, pero
que el dinero que colectan en su
círculo de amistades acerca a toda
la comunidad a la cura definitiva
del cáncer de seno.

con broche de oro los 41 partidos
locales del rol regular temporada
2015-16 NBA.
Esto sucedió en el AT&T Center durante su partido contra el
visitante Thunder de Oklahoma
City y la tradicional promoción
“Spurs Fan Appreciation Night”
con victoria en tiempo extra por
marcador de 102-98.
Así ganaron 40 partidos por
1 derrota (causada el domingo

Cultural Arts Center Center presentó su primer Street Party con
entrada.
La celebración fue un preámbulo para una activa temporada de
primavera y verano. Calentando el
ambiente para otros eventos como
Tejano Conjunto Festival, que se
inicia el 11 de mayo.
Entre otros artistas entretuvieron
al público los grupos de niños
de Guadalupe Academy, quienes
son las estrellas de la próxima
generación.

Cüppencake blends menu of fluff and refreshment

San Antonio is bitten by the
sweet bug and you will see why
once you step into a haven of
desserts that includes an oversized teddy bear to greet you
at the door.
Cüppencake, located at
22211 West IH-10 near The
Dominion, carries not only a
hidden gem of baked goods,
but also an evolving menu that
includes beverages, lunch and
desserts. The vision for the
comfort food all began when
Miguel and Monica Vildosola,
originally from Mexico, had
an idea to expand a worthy
business.
Monica was a baker who was
ready to show her talent to the
world and plans came together
quickly for the bakery to open
in November 2014. Eventually, both Miguel and Monica
expanded the menu with a wide
variety of coffees that will not
only pair well with the baked
goods, but educate their customers about the real meaning
behind coffee.
“Coffee should not be an afterthought because it’s a unique
beverage that pairs well with
our baked goods, which are
made from scratch,” Manager
Maggie Serva told La Prensa.
“So much thought went into that
and part of it was the recipes,
such as Swiss Marin, and a lot of
the cupcakes, instead of the super
sweet sticky candy cupcakes.”
La Prensa recently visited
Cüppencake and once we were
given a warm welcome, we
knew that the menu was not
going to fail. We tried enough
sweets as well as lunch and bev-
erages, which gave us energy
throughout the day.
To start things off right,
Serva made a handcrafted iced
Chai Tea Latte with a different,
but unique flavor. I hardly finish drinking chai tea from any
other shop, but Cüppencake
was the only exception.
You can tell they put a twist
on the recipe once you have a
cinnamon aftertaste that blends
well with the caffeinated beverage balancing out the latte.
Serva then brought out items
from the lunch menu that included a Watermelon Salad and
Garden Pita.
You may think that watermelon and salad is an odd pairing.
Yet, it is a great combination
that is refreshing for the palette. Mixed with watermelon,
cucumber, feta, red onion and
mint drizzled with balsamic
vinaigrette, it is lightly fill-
ing to try during the summer
season.
Another item to try from
the menu that is a little more
substantial is the Garden Pita.
Stuffed with hummus, spinach,
red bell peppers, olives, onions,
cherry tomatoes and feta, it also
carried an interesting flavor.
As you bite into the stuffed
pita, you will get a strong taste
of the feta that cools down with
the taste of hummus, making
it crisp and stomach friendly.
The portions for the salty menu
items may appear small, however, do not let it fool you.
The summer-themed entrees
are filling.
Once you get a little salty,
you must add in something to
satisfy your sweet tooth. The
first comforting dessert we tried
was the Oreo Cupcake.
Although it was in vanilla
frosting, the cupcake was not
overpowered. As I bit into the
delightful treat, I was not overwhelmed with sweetness, but
instead with a little bit of Oreo
and vanilla flavoring of the cake
and frosting, allowing it to be
strong yet fluffy in texture.
One important item to try on
the menu is the Carrot Cake Cüppencake. The natural flavors of
carrots and cream cheese in this
layered delight is light enough to
not make you feel guilty.
“We would like to open up
more locations, start supplying places with desserts and
continue to serve great coffee
and baked goods. I think it’s
rare when you have a place that
does both really well, and our
lunch menu is just getting better. People are starting to hang
on,” concluded Serva.

San Antonio Symphony Fiesta Pops
presents: music, dance and culture

The San Antonio Symphony is
partnering with Mariachi Campanas de America and the Guadalupe
Dance Company to offer two
spectacular concerts this weekend.
This celebration will be held at
the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, 100 Auditorium Circle,
and will honor Vicente Fernández
with a mixture of some of your favorite Mariachi songs and feature
the debut performance of 13-yearold singing sensation Isabel Marie
Sanchez.
“Vicente Fernández is one of
the greatest singers in this genre,”
San Antonio Symphony Director
Akiko Fujimato told La Prensa.
“To celebrate the 125th anniversary of Fiesta, we are also doing
a few sing-a-longs to entertain the
audience.”
The concerts will take place on
Saturday, April 16 at 8 p.m. and
Sunday, April 17 at 2 p.m. Tickets

“The Guadalupe Dance Company will perform pieces which
celebrate the heritage of San
Antonio,” Fujimato added. “Usually Campanas perform alone, but
in this case, the Symphony will
be backing them up, making it a
unique San Antonio celebration.”
Making a special guest appear-
ance and debut at the Tobin Center
will be a young protégé of the
Quintanilla family. “Isabel Marie
Sanchez is already becoming very
well known here in Texas an all
over,” said Fujimato. “She is a
great, phenomenal singer.”
Sanchez, who began singing
at the age of two, has already
received numerous awards, includ-
ing winning first place on “Sabado
Gigante,” one of the nation’s
longest running Spanish-language
television programs.
A Chicago native, Sanchez
now resides in San Antonio and
recently released her debut album, “New Girl in Town,” under
Q-Zone Records with the help of
Abraham Quintanilla.
Her singles “Dime Porque” and
“Fallaste Corazon” have received
rave reviews and have been added
to radio rotations across the country and Mexico. Sanchez is known
for her powerful vocals and wide
range. As a participant on “La Voz
Kids,” she received a three chair
turn and standing ovation from
the judges as well as the audience.
“With many unique performances, the Fiesta Pops concerts
are unlike any other event. You
get the Symphony, Mariachi
Campanas, special guests and the
Guadalupe dancers all in one stage
together,” Fujimato concluded.

Seas Food Festival is back for its
second year with more celebrity
chefs and a wide selection of international food, craft beers and unique
wines – all within the wonders of the
theme park.
During every weekend until
May 15, festival-goers are invited
to embark on a taste adventure to
sip and savor delicious creations
representing 12 countries near the
Mediterranean, North Atlantic,
Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, North
Pacific, Pacific Ocean and South
Atlantic.
With over 23 years of experience, Executive Chef for SeaWorld
& Aquatica San Antonio Scott
Ronczkowski has created a fun and
delicious menu, from classic authentic favorites to out out-of-the-box
surprises from all over the world.
“Guests are going to find foods
here that they cannot find in the
city. As they come to the park, they
will go from one booth to the next
and try amazing food. They can roll
over to Mexico and Cuba, Brazil and
Argentina or to Japan and Korea,”
said Chef Ronczkowski “Foodie
or not, people should come check
it out. With more than 65 unique
items, we’ve got something to satisfy every palate.”
After experiencing different cultures, it was not hard for Chef Ronczkowski to find inspiration behind
his innovative menu. “I’ve traveled
all over the world, and I’ve never
been afraid to try something new. I
wanted a menu that was friendly and
intriguing,” he added. “For example,
we will have authentic Cuban food
– ropa vieja, tostones, black beans
and rice – it’s awesome.”
The appetizer-sized tastings,
which according to Chef Ronczkowski are decent sized portions,
range from $3 to $7, while alcoholic
beverages range from $11 to $15.
Festival goers can choose from
the Greek glazed mini lamb burgers
and Spain’s paella “preparación
barroca” to the Argentinian empanadas and the Korean beef short ribs,
to name a few. Guests should not
forget about the extensive Caribbean
cocktails and French wines either.
In addition to all of the food,
drinks, roller coasters and shows,
guests will also be able to enjoy
live entertainment from jazz musician Pierre Porre. Originally from
New Orleans, Porre looks forward
to seeing all the families smile and
have a good time.
“I will be there every Saturday
and Sunday to play many favorites
with a jazzy twist. I like to pay attention to what makes the audience
feel joy and happiness and go on
from that,” he said.
The festival is included with any
Pass, Fun Card or daily admission,
and individual tastings are available
for purchase separately.

Great awe and reverence
swept through the audience as
the 2015-2016 Ballet San Antonio season came to an end with
a show to remember.
This weekend, “Ballet
Alive!” surprised audience
with a little more spice to the
program. Artistic Director
Willy Shives has proven he is
there to make the dance company better with all-inclusive
performances.
Once curtains opened, many
could see this performance was
going to add a little culture due
to the Fiesta season on tap. The
company started their performance with the upbeat piece
“Confetti,” a virtuoso ballet
consisting of three couples
with their festive tambourines,
considered a physical escape.
Once again, Kate Maxted
and Christopher McDaniel
outshined the other two couples
as chemistry in their performance was powerful and eyeboggling, preparing many for
their next performance called
“Solace.” This piece is a reflection of eternal love and our connection to others, sending out
the message the “we never lose
the people we love… They live
with us in our hearts for the rest
of our lives,” Shives explained.
Hopefully, Maxted and McDaniel will do many performances in the future to see
them one day become principal
dancers of the company as they
reach their full potential. The
meat of the performance came
in, “The Whistling,” where the
company really showed how
dancing is not a basic plie and
pique turn.

audience as the dancers told
their story through modern

that charmed the audience.
In fact, it was a delightful
performance that Sally Turkel
showed she was a diverse
dancer as she used her body
to tell the story rather than her
footwork. It was an unforgettable performance that showed
a more urban piece, something
audiences would normally see
at a recital.
After intermission, “Tribute”
entranced the audience to the
stage with a neo-classical ballet that was made for the Ballet Russe in 1961 by Frederic
Franklin. The piece was made
for dancers with the highest
level of technique in which
Sally Turkel achieved her status
as a ballet dancer as her small
frame peered through the stage.
This was the performance
for Turkel to show her true talent without needing help from
her fellow dancers. Although
Turkel is a highly talented
principal dancer, all the dancers
had the opportunity to show off
their own talent with “A Tropical Fiesta Finale.”
Filled with color, culture and
a celebration to the end of the
season, the finale took the audience on a journey from Samba
to La Bamba. With balloons
and confetti to end the show,
this was the opportunity Shives
took to show ballet enthusiasts
that he has revamped the piece
as he expanded and re-choreographed the work, especially
for the San Antonio audience.
Now, Ballet San Antonio is
preparing for next season. The
2016-2017 Season, “Celebrating Love,” begins this fall when
the curtain rises with the blockbuster ballet “Don Quixote.”
As winter approaches, it
will be time for the family
favorite and holiday traditionBallet San Antonio’s “The
Nutcracker.” Early spring will
bloom with the world’s most
extravagant story ballet, “The
Sleeping Beauty.”
Then, a sunny summer tease
is on the tip of each day, as
warmer weather brings the
annual “Ballet in the Park.”
Ballet San Antonio’s premiere
of these landmark productions
will be the crowning moment of
this year’s dance season, which
is perfect for all ages.

Local artists transform Plaza de Armas with
‘Compositions in Space: Architectural Interventions’
The City of San Antonio’s Department for Culture & Creative
Development (DCCD) unveiled
its new exhibition, “Compositions
in Space: Architectural Interventions,” featuring the works of six
local artists.
The multi-dimensional installations challenge the viewer’s
expectations of the building’s architecture. Two-dimensional works
create illusions of perceived depth,
videos transform the space into an
abstracted environment and sculptural installations occupy various
areas of the gallery in unique ways.
“The Plaza de Armas building is
one that is filled with a significant
amount of history and culture.
Architecturally, especially with the
recent state-of-the-art renovations,
the building provides a unique
space unlike any other in our city’s
downtown,” said Debbie RaccaSittre, DCCD interim director.
“The Culture Commons exhibit
hall at Plaza de Armas continues to
be an emerging space to highlight
local artists.”
The exhibition inside the Plaza
de Armas Building, 115 Plaza de
Armas, will run until Friday, June
17 and features the work of six local
artists including:
• Sylvia Benitez, “Selfish Giants (for Oscar Wilde)” – Inspired
by nature and often choosing it as
her subject, Benitez’s landscapes
and installation works combine
the serenity and volatility of the
wild. For this exhibition, however,
Benitez departed from her customary geo-architectural address and
decided to activate the organic
negative-spaces found between
tree limbs.
• Cathy Cunningham-Little,
“Six Degrees” – This installation
of silvered glass globes and silvered
hand-blown glass eggs incorporates
glass and light as a means of exploring relationships between man and
nature, art and architecture, and
culture and history. It is a visual
metaphor for the theory of the Six
Degrees of Separation theory.
• Mark Hogensen, “A Romance
of a Few Dimensions” – From his
“Plane Series,” the drawings by
Hogensen in this exhibit are about
the role perspective plays in our
perceptions of planes. He explores
linear perspective, as well as the
viewer’s vantage point through
the orchestration of lines and the
presentation of constructed form.
• Ben McVey, “Fractures” –
“Fractures,” which includes drawings and video, is based on ideas
that relate to proxemics, which is
the study of the spatial separation
individuals naturally maintain
and how this separation relates to
environmental and cultural factors.
Focusing on people’s relationships
with social media and digital devices, McVey explores the breaking
down of barriers between private
and public spaces, resulting in a
fragmentation within individual’s
own daily interactions and lives.
• Michele Monseau, “lakebyflowerlight with figure,” “fieldbylakelight with figure,” “lyingdown,” and “powerline (heave)”
- These works explore cinematic
and theatrical landscapes by seeking out discrepancies between individual experience of the landscape
and architecture, and corporate
(collective) abuses of the environment. The works in this exhibition
utilize layering of different aspects
of the landscape, using the human
figure as vessel—a conduit for and
casualty of the sublime.
• Anita Valencia, “Butterfly
Waystation” – Rampant consumerism and the depletion of
the earth’s natural resources has
long been a concern for Valencia,
which she addresses in her art. For
this large-scale installation, part
of an ongoing project, Valencia
used discarded materials including
aluminum cans, pull tabs, teabags,
among others, to impress upon the
viewer how much individuals consume and discard in their daily lives.
“This exhibit is unique in that it
challenges the viewer in a number
of ways,” said Sebastian Guajardo,
special projects manager. “The
themes of these works – mostly
centered on individuals and their
relationships with their surroundings, natural or otherwise – will
also provoke thought. We invite the
entire community to stop by Culture
Commons and view the exhibit.”
Culture Commons is open Monday-Friday, except City holidays,
from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and is free and
open to the public.

The Cutting Edge Fiesta Fashion Show celebrated
36 years of UIW’s best and brightest students
Nearly 600 guests kicked off
Fiesta with glitz and glamour at
UIW’s 36th presentation of the
Cutting Edge Fiesta Fashion Show
earlier this week.
This annual event not only put the
spotlight on UIW’s fashion students
but honored Mickey Agnese, wife
of UIW President Dr. Lou Agnese,
on her 30th anniversary as First
Lady of the university and presented
the inaugural “Pinkie People’s
Choice Award.”
The award, an endowed scholarship, was the gift of special friends
in honor of Mary Helen Devine
Pinner’s (Pinkie) 90th birthday. Pinner and her late husband Bill Pinner
gave generously of their time, treasure and talent throughout their lives
to various organizations including
the University of the Incarnate
Word. This award will continue that
legacy of giving by recognizing the
student whose design is chosen as
the audience favorite.
The Cutting Edge Fiesta Fashion
Show, produced entirely by students, featured garments illustrated,
designed and constructed by seniors
in UIW’s fashion design program.

Tinagero and Shanice White.
Their collections are judged by
industry professionals and put on
public display in the annual show,
a high-energy New York style
runway show produced by students
in the UIW’s Fashion Show Production class.
UIW student designer Stephanie
Rani Maiti-Marquez took home the
top prize, the 2016 Best of Show as
well as first place in construction
and third place in design. The best
of show award is determined by the
garment scored highest by a panel
of judges and includes a $1,500
scholarship.
The Maiti-Marquez collection, a
celebration of her Indian and Mexican heritage was created using boxy
silhouettes and traditional fibers
of Mexico along with the colors
and embroidery of India creating
a fusion collection that embodied
both cultures. Maiti-Marquez was
also the audience favorite earning
her the inaugural Pinkie People’s
Choice Award.
Rebekah Caldera took first place
in design and third place in construction. Second place in design went to
Diana Garcia and Andrea Stain took
second place in construction.
The Cutting Edge Fiesta Fashion
Show is an official Fiesta event.
Proceeds from provide scholarships for UIW fashion management
students. Since 2006, the fashion
show, its sponsors and supporters
have awarded more than $50,000 in
scholarships to fashion management
students. This year students Olivia
Willms and Natalia Hendrichs each
received a $1,500 scholarship.

´Queen of the South”
comes to USA Networks

On Wednesday, April 6, the
cast of USA Network’s “Queen
of the South” attended the new
drama’s world premiere screening at the Hispanicize Film
Showcase in Miami, Florida.
The screening was followed
by a panel discussion moderated by Entertainment Weekly’s
Nina Terrero.
Attendees of the event also
received a copy of the global
best-selling novel “La Reina
del Sur,” by internationallyacclaimed author Arturo PérezReverte. Earlier in the day,
the cast also participated in
activities at the conference
with influencers and attendees
including signing and photos at
their #BeTheQueen photo booth
activation.
“Queen of the South” tells the
powerful story of Teresa Mendoza, a woman who is forced to
run and seek refuge in America
after her drug-dealing boyfriend
is unexpectedly murdered in
Mexico. In the process, she
teams up with an unlikely figure
from her past to bring down the
leader of the very drug trafficking ring that has her on the run.
Starring Alice Braga (I Am
Legend) as Teresa, “Queen of
the South” also stars Verónica
Falcón (Besos de Azúcar) as Camila Vargas, Justina Machado
(Six Feet Under) as Brenda
Parra, Peter Gadiot (Tut) as
James, Hemky Madera (Weeds)
as Pote Galvez and Gerardo
Taracena (Apocalypto) as Cesar
“Batman” Guemes.
Guest stars include Joaquim
de Almeida (Our Brand is Crisis), Jon Ecker (Narcos) and
James Martinez (Breaking Bad).
The drama is executive produced by David T. Friendly
(Little Miss Sunshine, Courage
Under Fire), along with M.A.
Fortin and Joshua John Miller
(The Final Girls). Scott Rosenbaum (Gang Related) will serve
as showrunner.
The pilot was written by
Fortin and Miller, directed by
Charlotte Sieling and executive
produced by Pancho Mansfield
(Damien).
Fox 21 Television Studios
developed and produced the
pilot and will run lead on the
co-production with Universal
Cable Productions.
“Queen of the South” is
coming to USA Network this
Summer.
