ANNUAL FUNDRAISER BREAKS $100K; MAYOR COMMITS MORE FUNDS
Los Angeles Neighborhood Land
Trust’s “Park of Our Own” fundraiser
was held on a scorching Sunday afternoon
in June. Fortunately, the heat could not
deter the one hundred plus people who
attended the event held in Stephanie and
Howard Sherwood’s spacious and lovely
garden in Beverly Hills.
Among the speakers were Council President Eric Garcetti, Council Pro Tem
Wendy Greuel and Councilmember Ed
Reyes. The guests included the Sosa family who came to represent the newly
formed “Estrella Park Community Club,”
one of LANLT’s park projects. In appreciation for the work they are doing on
behalf of their park , “The Estrella Park
Community Club” was awarded a certificate from L.A. City. Councilmember
Reyes gave a moving speech recounting
his own childhood in the inner city and
the joy of discovering grass for the first
time. Council President Eric Garcetti
spoke and asked the crowd to “imagine
one thousand people in this backyard for a
moment, that is what the people of L.A.
have. We rank last among big cities in
park space.” Both speeches highlighted
the importance of LANLT and the work
we do.
During the last half hour of the party,
the Mayor made a surprise appearance.
The candor and warmth of his speech
was well worth the wait. He spoke passionately about the fight to save The
South Central Farm, and called
LANLT’s efforts in that battle “heroic.”
He then made a personal commitment to
insure LANLT’s viability through either
City funding or by helping raise additional funds from the private sector.
Then in true Villaraigosa style he stayed
and shook every hand and posed for
every photograph. It was a wonderful
way to end an extremely successful
fundraiser.

El evento para recaudar fondos titulado,
“Un Parque Nuestro”, del Los Angeles
Neighborhood Land Trust ocurrio un domingo muy caliente en Junio. Fortunadamente, el calor no hizo correr a los más de
cien personas que atendieron el evento en
la casa de Stephanie y Howard Sherwood,
en su espacioso y bello jardin en Beverly
Hills.
Algunos de los presentadores incluían, el
presidente del consejal, Eric Garcetti, la
Pro Tem de consejal Wendy Greuel, y el
miembro del consejal, Ed Reyes. Los
invitados incluían, la familia Sosa que
vinieron en representación de la nueva
organización llamada, “ Estrella Park
Club”, uno de los parques de LANLT.
Para enseñarles el aprecio por todo el
trabajo que ellos han hecho por su parque,
el “Estrella Park Community Club” fue
reconocido con un certificado de la ciudad de Los Angeles. Concejal Reyes,
quien les presento el certificado, habló
con mucha emoción recordandose de su
propia juventud en la ciudad y de su
primer encuentro con el cesped. Eric
Garcetti habló y le pidio a los invitados
que se, “imaginen mil personas en éste
jardin por un momento, esto es los que la
gente de Los Angeles tiene. Nosotros
estamos en el último puesto cuando comparamos nuestra ciudad con todas las demas por espacio para parques.
Durante la última media hora del
evento, el alcalde llegó de sorpresa. El
candor y el calor cuando habló justificó
la espera. Habló apasionadamente sobre la pelea por salvar El South Central
Farm y dijo que los esfuerzos de
LANLT eran “heroicas.” Despúes él se
comprometió personalmente a asegurar
la viabilidad de LANLT por medio de
fondos de la ciudad o ayundando a recaudar fondos adicionales del sector
privado. Despúes en estilo clasico Villaraigosa se quedó en el evento para dar
su mano y tomarse fotos con los invitados. Fue una manera maravillosa de
terminar un exitoso recaudor de fondos.

SOUTH L.A. 1ST ANNUAL EARTH DAY FESTIVAL
Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust’s mission moved a giant step forward
in May as we worked in collaboration with California Green Work’s Community-Based Watershed Pollution Prevention Program and the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board to bring the First Annual South Los Angeles Earth Day event to the Martin Luther King Shopping Center parking lot in
Watts; proving that even a parking lot in a dense urban community can be a
green oasis.
Over two hundred people came out and participated in an event that was
loaded with entertainment and children’s activities: information booths on
health and community services, performances by DW3 rhythm and blues band,
an Aztec dance ensemble, face painting by a clown and a collaborative artistic
endeavor led by Watts resident and artist Marlon Jackson in which a 4x4 painting of the earth was created by anyone who wanted to play with a little paint.
During a special presentation Assemblymember Mark Ridley- Thomas presented the Environmental Leadership Award to Ms. Anna Marie Carter, a.k.a.
The Seed Lady of Watts, who was recognized for fifteen years of dedication and
service to the environment by creating and advocating for gardens and green
space. LANLT has worked with Anna Marie to provide health, nutrition and
environmental workshops in Watts. At the event she shared the following sentiment: “It was a true honor for me to receive this award. It means so much for
the First South LA Earth Day to be held in Watts and for Watts to be recognized
for something good. There are many great things happening in Watts and so
often only the suffering is highlighted”. Those of us at LANLT could not agree
more.
EL PRIMER DIA DE LA TIERRA EN EL SUR DE LOS ANGELES
La misión del Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust avanzó un gran paso
en Mayo cuando estabamos trabajando con el California Green Works Community Based Watershed Pollution Prevention Program y el Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board, para traer el evento del Primer Día de La
Tierra anual al sitio de estacionamiento del Centro de comercio de Martin Luther King en Watts. Esto sirvió como una prueba que hasta un sitio de estacionamiento en una comunidad urbana densa puede convertirse en una oasis
verde.
Más de docientas personas vinieron y participaron en el evento lleno de entretenimiento y actividades para niños: casetas de información de salud y servicios comunitarios, funciones de musica de DW3 rhythm y la banda de blues,
un baile azteca, un payaso pintando caras, y un esfuerzo colaborativo artistico
manejado por Marlon Jackson, un residente y artista de Watts en donde
cualquier persona podría haber pintado un cuadro del mundo.
Durante una presentación especial, el miembro de la Asamblea, Mark Ridley
– Thomas, presentó el premio Liderazgo del Ambiente a la señorita Anna
Marie Carter, también conocida como La Señora de Las Semillas de Watts,
quien fue reconocida por sus quince años de dedicación y servicio al ambiente
haciendo jardines y abogando por espacios verdes. LANLT ha trabajado con
Anna Marie para proveer talleres de salud, nutrición, y del ambiente en Watts.
En el evento ella compartio el siguiente sentimiento: “Fue un gran honor para
mi recibir este premio. Tiene tanto valor que el Primer de La Tierra en el Sur
de Los Angeles fue celebrado en Watts y que Watts sea reconocido por algo
bueno. Hay muchas cosas buenas que estan pasando en Watts y muchas veces
solo el sufrimiento es lo que se nota. “ Nosotros en LANLT no podríamos
estar más de acuerdo.

UPDATES ON OUR FREE EVENTS AT OUR PARKS:
Estrella Park: This June the
residents of Estrella Park
formed their own neighborhood organization called “The
Estrella Park Community
Club” They wrote a mission
statement and elected officers.
Also reconstruction of the park
began. The grand re-opening
of Estrella Park will be on
September 16th.
Watts: West African Dance
Classes are offered on Tuesday nights from 6:30pm8:00pm. Starting August
10th, there will also be a
series of health workshops
on Thursdays. These workshops will take place from
6:30-8:00pm. The other
dates are August 24th, September 14th, and September
28th. For more information,

Marson: Local residents
have begun to participate in
free 1 hour exercise classes
on Mondays and Wednesdays
at 6:00pm. A series of 4

The mission of the Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust is to create small, accessible
community green spaces, such as parks and community gardens to address the lack of open
spaces in Los Angeles’ underserved neighborhoods and to ensure community participation
and collaboration in every step of the process of creating and managing these parks and
community gardens.
