As an organization, we have adopted a new mission statement: To lead the fight to cure and treat ALS through global, cutting-edge research, and to empower people with Lou Gehrig’s Disease and their families to live fuller lives by providing them with compassionate care and support. Though there is still much to learn about ALS, researchers are making promising strides toward answers. The ALS Association funds more ALS research than any other non-public organization in the world, and is an active advocate for increased funding from government agencies. In March 2006, we held our first state advocacy event in Harrisburg, where we received a standing ovation from members of the House of Representatives. In 2006, our Board voted to increase funding for ALS research. Our Chapter contributed over $850,000 to research efforts. Funds were allocated to the following projects: We partnered with the Joan Dancy and PALS Support Group to expand our presence in central New Jersey, and held an event with the Williamsport Crosscutters to reach out to constituents in central Pennsylvania. STUDY OF THE TOXIC ROLE OF MUTANT SOD1/BCL-2 COMPLEX IN MUTANT SOD1-LINKED ALS Piera Pasinelli, PhD; Davide Trotti, PhD Farber Institute for Neurosciences, Philadelphia, PA Both of our certified clinics, at Hershey Medical Center and Pennsylvania Hospital, treated a record number of patients, which only strengthened our resolve to find treatments and a cure for this terrible disease. ALS MODEL DEVELOPMENT Gregory Cox, PhD; Kevin Seburn, PhD The Jackson Laboratory, Bar Harbor, ME For all the progress we have made, we couldn’t have done it without the support of our donors. On behalf of the 850 patients and family members that we serve: thank you. Lucie Bruijn, PhD, Science Director and Vice President of The ALS Association, gave an overview of ALS and ALS Association Research. Virginia M.-Y. Lee, PhD, Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Co-Director of the Center for Neurodegenerative Disease Research at University of Pennsylvania’s School of Medicine discussed brand new research on Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Zachary Simmons, MD, Professor of Neurology, Penn State University, Director, ALS Clinical Center, Hershey Medical Center revealed information on clinical studies, specifically MRI and Cognitive Assessments in ALS. Finally, Piera Pasinelli, PhD, Frances & Joseph Weinberg Unit for ALS Research, Farber Institute for Neurosciences, Thomas Jefferson University, talked about Studies of Motor Neuron Death in ALS and Implications for Therapy. 3 PATIENT SERVICES The Lea R. Powell ALS Patient Services Program People with ALS (PALS) are our first priority. Through the generosity of all our contributors, we proudly offer the most comprehensive patient services program in the country, free of charge to PALS and their families. Over the past year, our patient services staff has provided an array of educational, recreational, patient care, family assistance, and outreach programs. Patient Care ALS CERTIFIED CLINICS: We are proud to provide cutting-edge medical care at two multidisciplinary ALSA-certified clinics. At each center, patients and caregivers are seen by a neurologist, registered nurse, physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech pathologist, registered dietician, nurse counselor, respiratory therapist, assistive technologist, and social worker. Additional specialists, such as a pulmonologist, physiatrist, and gastroenterologist are available for consultation. Pastoral care has also been integrated into the Hershey Clinic. Over the past year, there were 768 visits to the ALS Clinic at Pennsylvania Hospital and 460 visits to the ALS Clinic at Penn State-Hershey Medical Center. AFFILIATE ALS TREATMENT CENTERS: We also provide support for two additional clinics in our service region. Lehigh Valley Medical Center and Geisinger Medical Center both offer specialized ALS care for patients in northern Pennsylvania and the Lehigh Valley. Assistance In the advanced stages of ALS, the costs related to the disease can skyrocket. To help relieve some of the expense to families, the Chapter provides assistance with in-home care, equipment lending programs, home modifications and transportation free of charge to patients living in our service area. 4 ALS-0807-AR(connected) 2/19/08 1:57 PM Page 6 PATIENT SERVICES continued HOME CARE: The Chapter offers three programs to help patients living at home and their families. The Howard I. Abrams In-Home Care program funds 2-14 hours of regular weekly care for patients living at home. Additional programs provide relief for family members who serve as full-time caregivers to a relative with ALS. These respite care programs offer caregivers 72 hours of respite per year for non-ventilator patients, or 96 hours per year for ventilatordependent patients. A total of 153 patients received respite care in FY 2007, and we provided 26,048 hours of home health care through the Abrams In-home Care Program. TRANSPORTATION PROGRAM: The Chapter’s three wheelchair-accessible vans made 320 trips transporting patients and their caregivers to medical appointments, clinic visits, and recreational events. We also subcontract for wheelchair-accessible transportation for patients living outside of a 60-mile radius from the Chapter Office in Ambler, PA. EQUIPMENT LENDING PROGRAMS: Our lending programs provide expensive medical and communication equipment to patients. The Marjorie Shimer Equipment Loan Program loaned over 400 items over the past year, including manual and power wheelchairs, hospital beds, walkers, toileting and bathing devices, and other durable medical equipment. INSERVICE PROGRAMS: To assist health care workers caring for ALS patients, Chapter Staff offers educational inservice programs to those working in hospitals, nursing homes, skilled care facilities, hospices and home care agencies. Staff provided 22 educational inservices this year. The SCOTT A. MACKLER, MD, PHD, ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM helps patients maintain independence and interaction as the disease progresses by lending communication devices such as computers with voice output, remote door chimes to call for help, devices that offer hands-free access to televisions, VCRs and CD players, and other assistive technology equipment. Over 90 items were loaned through this program. ACCESSIBILITY: The Cox Family Fund for Accessibility gives persons with ALS access to ramping, stair glides, wheelchair lifts and emergency call devices at no cost, or reduced cost, to them. Through this fund, the Chapter was able to assist 83 patients. 5 Education RESOURCES AND SEMINARS: To help patients and their caregivers better understand and cope with the diagnosis of ALS, the Chapter offers a two-part seminar for Newly Diagnosed patients, as well as 9 monthly resource groups throughout the region. These groups provide an outlet to address questions and concerns, and share experiences with others. We were proud to offer three teleconferences this year, addressing Hospice and ALS, Medical and Symptom Management of ALS, and Cognitive Issues in ALS. Recreation 149 attendees at the Longwood Gardens Tour 73 attendees at Morey’s Piers Water Park 72 attendees at the Elmwood Zoo 259 attendees at the Annual Holiday Party 6 ALS-0807-AR(connected) 2/19/08 1:57 PM Page 8 PATIENT SERVICES continued REGIONS SERVED The Chapter hosted four recreational outings for patients, friends, and family members. Whether taking time “to smell the roses” at Longwood Gardens, or dancing with the Phillie Phanatic at the Holiday Party, there was something for everyone to enjoy. Specialty Programs We recognize the toll that ALS can take on the whole family. We provide programs and activities that address the needs of not only our patients, but everyone who is touched by the disease. CAREGIVERS DAY: “Nurturing the Nurturer” is an opportunity for full-time family caregivers to enjoy discussion groups, recreational and social activities. The Chapter provides respite services to ensure family members can attend. In 2006, 69 caregivers attended this event. VISITING VOLUNTEER PROGRAM: This program provides a “friendly visitor” to visit a person with ALS in the home to read books, share common interests, write letters, run errands, or just enjoy each others company. MEMORIAL SERVICE: More than 105 people attended the Chapter’s annual memorial service at Arcadia University to remember and honor those who have lost their lives to ALS. At the service, we unveiled our first Memorial Quilt, which featured blocks submitted by families who had lost a loved one to ALS. The Quilt, which was assembled by the Chapter’s Assistive Technologist Alisa Brownlee, remains on display in our Chapter office. 7 8 ALS-0807-AR(connected) 2/19/08 1:57 PM Page 10 ADVOCACY Advocating for our patients and their families, and empowering them to become advocates themselves, is a central tenet of our mission. Over the past year we worked to build and expand our advocacy program, and to increase outreach to legislators who serve our patients. State Advocacy In March of 2006, advocates from our Chapter and the Western Pennsylvania Chapter came together in Harrisburg for our first Pennsylvania ALS Awareness Day. Hosted by Representative Eugene McGill, this powerful event was an opportunity to spread awareness of ALS and build support among our legislators. Advocates received an overwhelmingly positive response from the 25 meetings they attended with state senators and representatives. National Advocacy In May, ALS advocates from across the country once again united in Washington, DC for The ALS Association’s annual National ALS Advocacy Day and Public Policy Conference. The Greater Philadelphia Chapter sent over 55 delegates, including 11 PALS, to this empowering event, which is the single largest gathering of the ALS community in the country. They joined hundreds of representatives from the ALS community to share the ALS message with Members of Congress. By all accounts, Advocacy Day 2006 was a tremendous success. For the first time, advocates were able to deliver our message to all 535 Members of Congress. In fact, in the month following Advocacy Day, over 130 Members of Congress joined as co-sponsors of the ALS Registry Act, an unprecedented show of support so soon after Advocacy Day! Clearly our advocacy is making a difference. Advocacy Year-round The highlight of the day was a moving speech by Representative McGill on the House floor, introducing House Bill 616, which established May 2006 as ALS Awareness Month in Pennsylvania. Following his remarks, our ALS advocates received a standing ovation from the members of the House. 9 Our advocacy efforts are not confined to once a year. We recognize the importance of maintaining contact with legislators throughout the year to reinforce the ALS message. Over the past year, we have increased our advocacy efforts to include letter-writing campaigns at our Walks to D’Feet ALS, and phone calls and emails to our legislators throughout the year. 10 ALS-0807-AR(connected) 2/19/08 1:57 PM Page 12 July 2006 EVENTS February 2006 ALS Awareness Night at the Lakewood Blue Claws 7th Annual Scranton/ Wilkes Barre Red Barons Autograph Party and Auction for ALS ALS Awareness Night and Jersey Auction at the Williamsport Crosscutters 3rd Annual Edie Weinholtz Celebrity ALS Golf Outing Billy Lake Memorial ALS Beef and Beer Family Day September 2006 Chapter Events February 1, 2006 - January 31, 2007 March 2006 Memorial Service Ventilator Conference ALS Awareness Day in Harrisburg ALS Dodgeball Tournament April 2006 Put Away ALS In Memory of Joe Stetler Tennis Tournament "Everything's Coming Up Roses" Luncheon May 2006 Newly Diagnosed Seminar: Philadelphia Region Newly Diagnosed Seminar: Harrisburg Region "Scrum for Six" Michael Bartone Rugby Event Longwood Gardens Tour and Lunch Fourth Annual Pasta for PALS 2nd Annual Box Out ALS Basketball Marathon National ALS Advocacy Day and Public Policy Conference Fifth Annual ALS Charity Auction and Autograph Party with the Lakewood Blue Claws Longaberger Basket Bingo Fourth Annual Seaside Board… Walk to D'Feet ALS® 17th Annual Phillies Phestival June 2006 1st Larry Goodwin Memorial Golf Tournament Sixth Annual Harrisburg Walk to D'Feet ALS® Sixth Annual Gene Gladfelter Memorial Mile ALS Express 8th Annual Bike Ride Morey's Piers Outing 15th Annual Billy Lake Memorial Basketball Tournament Trenton Thunder vs. Connecticut Defenders AVP Seaside Heights Open Professional Beach Volleyball Tournament Michael Bartone Memorial Golf Tournament Michael Bartone Annual Dinner Dance Berks ALS Fundraising Event: Deanna Reuben and Friends "Classical, Broadway, and All That Jazz" Elmwood Zoo Outing Sixth Annual Gino's Race Eighth Annual Paul Jobson Jr Memorial Golf Tournament Newly Diagnosed Seminar: Philadelphia Region Newly Diagnosed Seminar: Harrisburg Region Ryan Shupp Benefit Softball Tournament Couture for a Cure at King of Prussia Mall Sam Bonita Memorial Golf Tournament Celebrity Charity Scrabble Match Friends of John Fineran present the 7th Annual John Fineran Golf Classic 5th Annual Ocean City Board… Walk to D'Feet ALS® October 2006 "For One More Day" Lunch and Conversation with Mitch Albom 6th Annual KAK Cup Golf Outing Research Update 4th Annual Lehigh Valley Walk to D'Feet ALS® The Gettysburg College 175th Anniversary Golf Outing and Auction to Benefit Lou Gehrig's Disease ALS Fundraiser at Bourbon Blue 13th Annual Nurturing the Nurturer Conference 7th Annual Scott Mackler 5K Run/Walk November 2006 13th Annual Curt's Golf Outing 5th Annual Greater Philadelphia Walk to D'Feet ALS® December 2006 Annual Luncheon honoring Ron Krancer Patient and Family Holiday Party January 2007 Billy Lake Memorial ALS Beef and Beer 11 12 ALS-0807-AR(connected) 2/19/08 1:57 PM Page 14 GIFTS Curt and Shonda Schilling Gifts In Kind Donations Shonda and Curt Schilling’s unparalleled dedication to the ALS Association began shortly after Curt joined the Phillies in 1992 and was inspired by PALS Dick Bergeron. Curt’s Pitch for ALS and the Curt Schilling Golf Outing have been among the Chapter’s biggest fundraisers since the early 1990’s. The Schillings maintain close relationships with many PALS… their first child is named “Gehrig” as a tribute to all the PALS they have met. ALS knows no geographic boundaries, nor does this exceptional family. The Phillies Unite to Strike Out ALS In 1984, with the encouragement of the spirited Malvina Charlestein, the Phillies formed a relationship with our Chapter that has spanned the years. The first Phillies event was a lively Phillies Wives Fashion Show. In 1989, the Phillies held the first autograph party and auction, and through this fiscal year the Phillies have raised a staggering $8 million for the fight against ALS. The Chapter is proud to be the principal charity of the Phillies. The entire Phillies organization works hard year-round to raise funds and awareness for ALS. The ALS Association, Greater Philadelphia Chapter recognizes donations within our fiscal year, which is February 1 through January 31. This listing recognizes donors who have given $250 or more. With grateful appreciation to the thousands of people who have made contributions of less than $250, the constraints of printing this report did not allow us to list these important donors individually. Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of this listing. If your name has been inadvertently omitted or listed inaccurately, please accept our apologies and contact our office at 215-643-5434. For the purposes of this listing, all gifts to the Phillies Phestival through Phillies Charities are included. Individual gifts made through the United Way Donor Option programs designated to our Chapter are not listed. 13 14 ALS-0807-AR(connected) 2/19/08 1:57 PM Page 16 GIFTS continued $400,000 & above Phillies Charities, Inc.
