Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo!
From the Pastor’s Pen
A letter from Our Archbishop
Today we are kicking off our participation in the Beyond
Sunday campaign. This campaign seeks to raise more than
$100 million to address vitally important needs in Catholic
education, as well as the needs of our own parish that cannot be met through our ordinary sources of income. Currently the efforts have raised over $55 million dollars.
To surpass this collective goal, every parish in the Archdiocese will participate. St. Charles Borromeo is one of more
than 80 parishes that are actively participating in the campaign over the next several months, called Phase III. Our
Beyond Sunday target is $1.155 million.
Of the Beyond Sunday funds raised through our parish campaign, 40% remains here at St. Charles Borromeo for our
own needs.
Borromeo Vision
With our share of the proceeds from this campaign we will
invest in our newest phase of schooling: THE SCB EARLY
CHILDHOOD CENTER. In addition, we will be able to use
portions of our revenue to address other needs of the parish
and school.
More details of Beyond Sunday will be presented over the
coming weeks and months, when we will share information
with our entire parish family and request each members’
participation. Please respond prayerfully and with a pledge
of financial support that will help strengthen our schools, our
parish and Catholic education throughout the Archdiocese.
Campaign Prayer
God our Father, in this moment of need, we place ourselves
with confidence in Your holy presence. We thank You that
in Baptism, You made us Your children, redeemed by Jesus
Your Son and united to Him and one another. Guide us
with the Holy Spirit and deepen our faith we have inherited
from past generations. May our efforts be worthy of their
memory.
Grant, Lord that the Beyond Sunday campaign will through
support of Catholic education and the parishes of of our
Archdiocese, bring us Your people to new depths of
knowledge and love for You. May this campaign be a
source of new strength to those in need of healing in our
civic community, of vitality in families, of development for
parishes and neighborhoods.
May all who promote this campaign by their prayers, sacrifices, and labor be granted a special share in that communion of love that is Yours with Jesus Your Son and the Holy
Spirit. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
My Dear Friends in Christ,
Vibrant in our Catholic identity, the parishes and
school communities of the Archdiocese of St. Louis are dynamic centers of faith, learning, and service. We must assure
their continued service as they strive every day to become
Alive in Christ!.
We recently embarked upon the Beyond Sunday
campaign with the goal of transforming Catholic education
in our Archdiocese and investing in our parish communities,
thereby ensuring that those who come after us will have the
same blessings and opportunities that have been offered to
us. To truly understand why this campaign is essential, we
must ask ourselves, ‘What is Beyond Sunday?’
My friends, this is our opportunity to shape the
future of the institutions – our parishes and schools – that
have shaped us. Every member of the Catholic Church in our
Archdiocese must do our part – we need to sustain our wonderful communities of faith, provide widespread access to
our tradition of educational excellence, and assist our schools
to maintain the high standards for which they are known.
We must move forward in faith and prepare our Church for
future generations!
I commend all those who continue to give so generously of themselves to carry out the mission of our Church,
especially the many volunteers who continually give countless hours of their time to help, whenever they are called
upon.
I am grateful to all who have opened their hearts to
Beyond Sunday with generous gifts of prayer, time, talent,
and treasure. Participation is the key to our success, and I call
upon all men and women of faith in our Archdiocese to join
me in a sacrificial pledge of support to Beyond Sunday that is
payable for up to a five--year period. Together we can and
will provide for the future of our faith. With prayers for you
and every member of our Catholic family, I remain,
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Robert J. Carlson
Archbishop of St. Louis
Joke of the Week
The average age of people living in our retirement community is 85. Recently, a neighbor turned 100, and a big party
was thrown. Even his son turned up.
“How old are you” a tenant asked. “I’m 81 years old,” he
answered. The tenant shook her head. “They sure grow up
fast, don’t they?

Whitewater-The Positive Power of Grief
Your Journey of Grief
The journey of grief lies in change. The relationship with your loved one that was once physical and present, is now a relationship of memory and of feeling. You are capable of navigating this rough water of life. Be patient with yourself.
Trust yourself, the empowerment is within you. Deep within you are the instincts and the skills to get you through. Deep
within you is the life and energy of nature. This life and energy, this healing power comes to you through your emotions,
through anger, through sadness, through happiness, through fear. You give direction to your journey by your awareness of
what you are feeling, and your knowledge of how to use your emotional experiences.
If the above passage sounds like a program, you have been searching for please join us every first Tuesday of the month at St.
Elizabeth Ann Seton at 7:00 p.m. in the church basement. These monthly support meetings are held for anyone experiencing
the loss of a loved one. Please contact Mary Kutchback at (636) 946-9758 or Steve Cave at (636) 947-4314 for more information regarding this program
A prayer for our Deceased
Eternal Rest grant unto Them. O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of the faithful departed,
through the Mercy of God, rest in Peace. Amen.

The St. Charles Borromeo
Journey
1932 *** 1941
Entries in the Jesuit parish history, Historia Domus, suggest that the new Borromeo pastor, Fr. William B. Sommerhauser SJ, desired to replace the Sisters of
Loretto as the parish schoolteachers. Prior to being named
pastor, Fr. Sommerhauser was an associate at St. Charles
Borromeo for two years and found the Loretto nuns to be,
“aloof and did not exert themselves to try to please.” He
found them as, “acting very high-handed.” Upon writing a
letter to the Loretto superior requesting a full time music
teacher, the response he received suggested
Fr. Sommerhauser immediately conferred with former pastor, Fr. Ehrhard, and then met with the superior of
the St. Louis Notre Dame convent. Father reported, “The
next day the superior telephoned to say that the Notre
Dame Sisters can probably replace the Loretto Sisters in the
parish school. This would give them two schools in St. Charles and they like rivalry.” By choosing the Note
Dame order, Sommerhauser acquired religious women for the parish who specialized in parochial school instruction.
Many parishioners did not greet the new nuns cheerfully. Some took up a petition to have the Loretto order reinstated and marched outside the church on Sunday with banners saying, “We want our Sisters
back!” However, the campaign did not succeed and the Notre Dame Nuns stayed. Classes started on Sept.
6, 1932. Three Notre Dame nuns, 2 lay teachers and a candidate for the religious order, who was Fr. Sommerhauser’s niece, taught the school’s 236 students that year.
In 1940, to prepare for the 150th anniversary of the founding of the parish and the naming of the city
of St. Charles, the congregation decided to have the church decorated. Because 1940 was the 400th anniversary of the founding of the Society of Jesus, the improvements included the painting, on the high arch above
the altar, of a huge mural featuring eight Jesuit saints: Ignatius Loyola, Francis Xavier, Isaac Jogues, Peter
Claver, John Berchmans, Aloysius Gonzaga, Stanislaus Kostka, and Peter Canisius.
The anniversary celebration opened with a Pontifical High Mass at the Academy of the Sacred Heart on the
morning of Sunday, Oct. 12, 1941. William A. Rice SJ, bishop of British Honduras, celebrated the Mass, assisted by former pastors Stephen McNamara, Henry Ehrhard, and current pastor Sommerhauser as deacons.
Borromeo’s assistant pastor, Fr. James Fallon delivered the sermon. These four priests would eventually encompass four of the last five Jesuits to serve as pastors of St. Charles Borromeo.
On Tuesday, October 14, parishioners marched next to a float depicting the “First Church of St.
Charles” in a parade that traveled from Main Street to Blanchette Park. Twenty floats in all commemorated
themes from St. Charles’ history, including the arrival of Louis Blanchette, the Lewis and Clark expedition, the
founding of the Sacred Heart Academy and the arrival of German immigrants. On Sunday, October 19, the
Academy of the Sacred Heart wrapped up the festivities with a pilgrimage to the shrine of Philippine Duchesne.

Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo!
El Camino de St Charles Borromeo
1932 *** 1941
and Peter Canisius.

a quienes estamos Ilamados a server.

Pan y Amor
(Bread and Love)
An Archdiocesan Missionary Aid Program for the Poorest of
the Poor
Dear Friends,
Imagine being a young child, left to care for yourself on the
streets of Cochabamba, Bolivia or Kampala City, Uganda?
Where is your next meal coming from? Where will you
sleep? How will you survive? Sadly, these are the daily concerns for children living in impoverished countries.
Our very own Archdiocesan program, Pan y Amor, works to rescue boys and girls from the street
and to give them hope for the future. Founded in 1991 by Msgr. Bernard Sandheinrich, Pan y Amor
is a marvelous program directly ministering to thousands of boys and girls in Bolivia, Kenya, Columbia and Uganda. The program strives to meet both the physical and spiritual needs of the children,
providing them with a chance to live safe, productive lives, just like you and me.
Although these children are thousands of miles away, they are our brothers and sisters in Christ
whom we are called to serve. Whether it is an abandoned baby in La Paz, Bolivia, or a young girl
who has suffered physical abuse in Boyacá, Columbia, we have the opportunity to be the hands and
feet of Jesus through this ministry. By sharing the light of Christ with these children, we are making
their futures brighter.
We have a wonderful thirty minute video, The Forsaken, which captures the essence of Pan y Amor
and the care and love provided by personnel at our program homes. Won’t you please take a few
minutes to view it at http://archstl.org/theforsaken. During this jubilee year of Mercy, we are called
to perform corporal and spiritual works of mercy (www.im.va). This is your opportunity to change
the future of a child. Please prayerfully consider becoming a Pan y Amor sponsor today?
Gratefully in Our Lord,
Father Bob Menner

In this Gospel, Jesus says, “Sell your belongings and give alms. Provide money
bag for yourselves that do not wear out,
an inexhaustible treasure in heaven that no
thief can reach nor moth destroy.”
Please help the Society of St. Vincent de Paul bring respite and hope to the elderly who are not able to find
relief from the summer heat, and you will indeed find
“an inexhaustible treasure in Heaven!”
Prayer Books
If anyone is looking to purchase the small prayer books that
are present in every pew, of our church, we have copies of
them in the church office. Call Mary DuBois at 636-946-1893
and she will set one aside for you. . . The cost per prayer
book is only $5.00, and they would be a big help to any child
struggling to learn their prayers, or even for an adult, who
was needing to brush up on their prayers. They are small
enough to fit in a ladies purse or would make a nice gift if you
were going to visit someone in the hospital.
