Con la experiencia adquirida, el rmff 2013 ofrecerá un mayor número de proyecciones, todas gratuitas: nuestra voluntad es hacer llegar el mejor cine nacional e internacional a un conjunto de espectadores cada vez más amplio. En los cinco días de la primera edición del rmff, celebrada en marzo de 2012, exploramos la geografía de la imaginación y los anhelos de cinco continentes. El viaje atrajo a 21 mil espectadores en cinco ciudades, que disfrutaron de 68 películas. Trama rmff.mx TRAMA — In its second edition, the aim of the Riviera Maya Film Festival is not just to combine beautiful scenery and quality films: it is, as well, generating environmental awareness by strengthening the link between cinema, environment and tourism. The rmff intends to render high standard cinema accessible to all audiences, placing Quintana Roo on the cultural map, stimulating the development of the country and strengthening film broadcasting and distribution of Mexican films in a scenario that has been intricate for independent films. This year we worked on the one hand, to grow and improve and, on the other, to repeat the successes. Within the five days of the first edition of the rmff, held in March 2012, we explored the geography of imagination and longings from the five continents. We attracted 21,000 viewers in five cities that enjoyed 68 movies. With experience acquired, the rmff 2013 offers a greater number of projections, all charge-free: our will is to get the best national and international films to an increasingly broader audience. We expect more viewers who will enjoy 70 films in 250 projections both in and outdoors. Environment, human rights, global economics and cultural identity are some of the topics that the films of this section deal with. They aim to open spaces for thoughtful consideration of contemporary issues through critical and proposing outlooks. O4 GALAS Con la intención de crear un puente entre público, directores y actores, las proyecciones de esta sección se acompañan por eventos especiales, por ejemplo charlas con invitados destacados. Las películas provienen de diferentes partes del mundo, lo que otorga al espectador una visión amplia de la industria fílmica internacional. Este espacio ofrece un recorrido por filmografías de diferentes latitudes, centrándose principalmente en aquellas cintas que fueron bien recibidas por el público. La posibilidad de revisar las películas que consiguen establecer el sano equilibrio entre el éxito en taquilla y la expresión artística personal. Intending to create bridges that communicate spectators, actors and directors, the films of this section are presented in special events, such as sessions with renowned guests. Movies from all around the world give the audience a wide perspective on the international film industry. It gives us the opportunity to see how films achieve a healthy balance between box office success and personal artistic expression. En ella se proyectan cintas de ficción y documentales nacionales a los que, debido a su carácter personal o trasgresor, les cuesta hacerse un hueco en la cartelera comercial del país. Es un espacio dedicado a la difusión de lo más destacado del quehacer cinematográfico de México. Aquellos filmes que han destacado en festivales internacionales gracias a su espíritu audaz y provocador están presentes en este panorama. La sección reúne películas que desafían las convenciones, tanto en la forma como en el fondo. Un puñado de alternativas a los modelos tradicionales de hacer cine. This is the competition section of the rmff, presenting national fiction and documentary films that, due to their personal or contravening nature, find it difficult to position themselves in the country’s commercial billboards. This is a space dedicated to the promotion of the most relevant filmmaking in Mexico. Those films that have excelled in international festivals thanks to its bold and provocative spirit are present in this scenario. The section gathers films defy convention, both in form and in substance. It presents a handful of alternatives to traditional models of filmmaking. Primero con el guion de Kids (Larry Clark, 1995) y después con su ópera prima, Gummo (1997). Es conocido también por la película Julien Donkey-Boy (1999) y el guion de Ken Park (Clark, 2002). Galas — Born in California, in 1973, Harmony Korine has, since he was young, inflicted controversy with his works on the swampy world of adolescence: Initially with the script for Kids (Larry Clark, 1995) and later on with his opera prima, Gummo (1997). He is also known for his work at Julien Donkey-Boy (1999) and the script for Ken Park (Clark, 2002). (1976), dirigida por el español Narciso Ibáñez Serrador, fue en su momento, en su país, un éxito de taquilla. Ahora, el misterioso realizador Makinov ofrece un respetuoso remake de esta cinta, pero con un cambio de locación: la historia transcurre en México. Beth y Francis son pareja, esperan un bebé; con la intención de pasar unos días románticos, van de vacaciones a la costa mexicana, pero los decepciona el bullicio que encuentran ahí. Makinov There are many horror movies starring malicious children, but few have stayed for long in our memories. Who Could Ever Kill a Kid? (1976), by Spanish director Narciso Ibáñez Serrador, was at the time a blockbuster in his country. But now Makinov, the mysterious filmmaker, brings a polite remake of the film, in a different setting: the story takes place in Mexico. Beth and Francis are a couple expecting a baby; they intend to spend some quiet days and travel to a Mexican beach but, disappointed by the uproar, navigate to an island that turns out to be populated by infants that are anomalous and sanguine. RMFF rmff.mx SPRING BREAKERS: VIVIENDO AL LÍMITE EEUU, 2O12 ——— — Se acercan las vacaciones de primavera en Estados Unidos. Un grupo de chicas atractivas quiere disfrutar de un viaje a la playa, pero no cuenta con dinero. Tienen una idea: cometer un atraco. El golpe resulta bien, pero pronto son llevadas, en bikini y con resaca, ante un juez, por consumo de drogas. Un misterioso hombre las libera y, junto a él, inician unas vacaciones salvajes. Después de la extraña Frotadores de basura (2009), Harmony Korine regresa a la que parece ser su temática favorita: la vida de adolescentes que se entregan a un hedonismo vacío. Con una estética cercana al videoclip, el director cambia radicalmente la imagen inocente de un par de actrices de la fábrica Disney: Selena Gomez y Vanessa Hudgens. rmff.mx Spring break is coming up in the United States. A group of young pretty girls want to make a beach trip, but have no money. Their idea of committing a robbery works out well, but they’re still taken to court for consuming illegal drugs. A mysterious man sets them free and with him, they initiate a very riotous journey. After the odd Trash Humpers (2009), Harmony Korine comes back for what seems to be his preferred topic: the lives of young characters that give themselves to a void hedonism. With a remembrance of video clips, the director radically modifies the naïve representation of the two Disney-made actresses, Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens. RMFF RMFF 2O13 RMFF 2O13 TRAMA — NÚMERO 19 NÚMERO 18 TRAMA — To the wonder eeuu, 2O12 ——— — Las reflexiones existenciales, formalmente preciosistas, que Malick exploró en El árbol de la vida (2011) vuelven en esta historia sobre la infidelidad y la naturaleza del amor. El desencuentro amoroso se desarrolla en el centro de los eeuu, en Oklahoma. Neil (Ben Affleck), un escritor sumido en el fracaso, ha hecho de su debilitado matrimonio con Marina (Olga Kurylenko) una imagen de la infelicidad. His approach has given testimony of spiritual crisis in his country, as shown in Badlands (1973) and The Thin Red Line (1998). rmff.mx rmff.mx RMFF RMFF 2O13 RMFF 2O13 Carmita Carmita — El cuarto desnudo The Naked Room — Despertar el polvo Awakening Dust — En los años cincuenta Carmita salió de Cuba con la intención de convertirse en una estrella de Hollywood. Sin embargo, su carrera y su vida –a decir de la mujer– fueron coartadas por su celoso esposo. Hoy Carmita sobrevive en una casa vieja y semiabandonada, su jaula de oro. El personaje cuenta su vida a los directores. La cineasta Nuria Ibánez introdujo su cámara en un consultorio psiquiátrico y filmó las consultas de varios niños y adolescentes, para construir una obra que trata, en particular, sobre los malestares de la sociedad mexicana y, más ampliamente, sobre la fragilidad humana. La corrupción, la violencia y un destino casi inexorable son los temas del tercer largometraje de Hari Sama. In the fifties Carmita left Cuba with the intention of becoming a Hollywood star. However, her jealous husband, as she explains, wrecked her career and her life. Today Carmita survives in a semi-abandoned old house, as her gilded cage. The character tells her life to the directors. Filmmaker Nuria Ibáñez introduced her camera in a psychiatric clinic and filmed consultations of several children and teenagers, to build a work that deals, in particular, with the discomforts of Mexican society and, more broadly, about human frailty. Corruption, violence and an almost inexorable fate are the topics of Hari Sama’s third feature film. “Chano”, a homeless man with a dark past, survives out on the streets of Iztapalapa. One day his godson gets in trouble and he should help, but is he capable of doing anything within the law? Las estrategias y las ideas del político sobre la seguridad han causado fuertes controversias. Después del estallido del reactor nuclear de Fukushima, el gobierno nipón establece un perímetro de seguridad por el que las familias de una ciudad son evacuados. Se proyectaron 68 películas en 12 salas de cine y cuatro sedes al aire libre; a las funciones asistieron 21 mil espectadores. El rmff 2012 contó con dos galas magnas y cinco fiestas vip. Durante los seis días de duración, el festival recibió a 350 invitados especiales (actores, directores, productores, etc.) y a 75 medios nacionales e internacionales, que se encargaron de cubrir el evento. Se repartió un millón y medio de pesos en premios y se promovió la conciencia a favor del medioambiente. The Festival had two major galas and five VIP parties. The festival hosted 350 special guests (actors, directors, producers, etc.) and 75 national and international media to cover the event. The films presented attracted wide audiences as people could enjoy Mexican works later shown in movie theaters nation wide and abroad, some of which were rewarded at diverse International Film Festivals. The winning title was Dog Days, the documentary film directed by José Álvarez, that engages in the life of a Totonaca community. The rmff 2012 didn’t only focus on the exhibit of films. Trough Rivieralab, it contributed to the materialization of promising film projects. La plataforma de industria del rmff, Rivieralab, eligió en su primera edición a proyectos cuya factibilidad y calidad artística los hacía merecedores de un apoyo económico, dotado de 200 mil pesos para cada ganador. Así, Tanta agua, de Ana Guevara y Leticia Jorge, se alzó con el premio Work in Progress. En la categoría Foro de Coproducción, Réimon, de Rodrigo Moreno; Tormentero, de Rubén Imaz; y Nueva España, de Raya Martin, hicieron lo propio; Material de composición, de Pedro Aspahan, obtuvo una mención especial. RMFF TRAMA — rmff.mx Desde su concepción, el Riviera Maya Film Festival ha tenido entre sus objetivos la generación de conciencia ecológica. Estas fueron algunas de sus acciones verdes en 2012. Caring for the environment is among the main concerns of the Riviera Maya Film Festival from the point it was conceived. These are some of the green actions that took place during our First Edition. Los carteles, sobres, cartas, volantes, carpetas y, en general, toda la papelería del festival se fabricó con material reciclado. El papel y el cartón utilizado en las oficinas del RMFF fue enviado a reciclaje. All posters, flyers, carpets and stationary in general were made out of recycled materials. Paper and cardboard used for office purposes were sent to a recycling plant. En la primera edición del RMFF se repartieron entre invitados, prensa, aliados y demás colaboradores bolsas de yute, una fibra natural 100% biodegradable, amigable con el ambiente, resistente y, además, bonita. O1 NÚMERO 79 TRAMA — O2 During the festival, we gave away totes made out of yute, a 100% natural fabric, environmentally friendly and resistant. En la presentación del festival a la prensa, que tuvo lugar en el Castillo de Chapultepec de la ciudad de México, se regalaron a los periodistas estas plantas, que simbolizan el interés del RMFF por el medioambiente. O3 At the press conference for the main presentation of the RMFF in the Castle of Chapultepec, living plants in coconut fiber containers were given away to all press members and assistants, as a symbolic statement about our attitude towards the environment. El festival fue decorado con plantas en jarrones de vidrio soplado. Alimentadas con agua de manantial y minerales solubles, una vez finalizados los eventos fueron devueltas a la tierra para que siguieran su ciclo vital. All the events, venues, and settings of the RMFF 2012 were decorated with living plants in local blown glass vessels with small amounts of water. Plants were all replanted and returned home.
