Second Sunday of Advent
6 Churches to be indulgence sites for
Year of Mercy
All will open their Holy Doors on Sunday, Dec. 13
MIAMI | To mark the start of the Jubilee Year of Mercy,
churches around the world — including six in the
Archdiocese of Miami — will be opening a Holy Door on the
third Sunday of Advent — five days after the Dec. 8
opening of the Holy Door in Rome by Pope Francis.
A Holy door symbolizes a passage or transition into a
special year of evangelization and prayer. The Holy Door is
opened to evoke the concept of forgiveness, which is the
main focus of a Holy Year, and in this case mercy, the focus
of this extraordinary jubilee.
Archbishop Thomas Wenski will open the Holy Door at St.
Mary Cathedral, 7525 N.W. Second Ave., Miami, during the
10 a.m. Mass Sunday, Dec. 13. The five other designated
churches will open their Holy Doors as follows:
 Basilica of St. Mary Star of the Sea, 1010 Windsor Lane,
Key West. Father John Baker, rector, will symbolically
open the door at every Mass: Saturday, Dec. 12, 6 p.m.;
Sunday, Dec. 13, at 7:30, 9 and 10:30 a.m. (English) and
noon (Spanish).  Our Lady of Mercy, 5201 N. Military Trail, Deerfield
Beach, during the 10:30 a.m., with Father Kenneth
Whittaker, pastor, presiding.  Shrine of Our Lady of Charity, 3609 S. Miami Ave.,
Miami, during the 3 p.m. Mass, with Father Juan Rumin
Dominguez, rector, presiding.  Gesu, 118 N.E. Second St., Miami, during the 10 a.m.
Mass, with Jesuit Father Eduardo Alvarez, pastor,
presiding.  St. Anthony, 901 N.E. Second St., Fort Lauderdale,
during the 10:30 a.m. Mass, with Father Michael Grady,
pastor, presiding. During the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis is granting
indulgences to people who visit any of the four papal
basilicas in Rome, the cathedral where they live, or any of
the shrines or churches designated by their diocesan bishop.
Indulgences also are granted to anyone who performs “one
or more” of the traditional works of mercy, such as visiting
the sick, feeding the hungry or sheltering the homeless.
These actions must be accompanied by participation in the
sacrament of reconciliation and the Eucharist, a profession
of faith and prayers for the pope and his intentions.
Those who are in prison, ill or elderly can obtain the
indulgence by attending Mass or praying wherever they
can, for the love of the Father “excludes no one.” For more

MIAMI | Con motivo del inicio del Año Jubilar de la
Misericordia, las iglesias de todo el mundo — incluyendo a
seis de la Arquidiócesis de Miami — abrirán una Puerta
Santa, el tercer domingo de Adviento — cinco días después de
la apertura de la Puerta Santa en Roma, por el Papa
Francisco, el 08 de diciembre.
Una Puerta Santa simboliza un pasaje o transición a un año
especial de evangelización y oración. La Puerta Santa se abre
para evocar el concepto de perdón, que es el principal objetivo
de un Año Santo, y en este caso de la misericordia, el enfoque
de este jubileo extraordinario.
El Arzobispo Thomas Wenski abrirá la Puerta Santa en la
Catedral St. Mary, 7525 N. W. Second Ave. , en Miami,
durante la Misa de las 10 de la mañana, del domingo, 13 de
diciembre. Las otras cinco iglesias designadas abrirán sus
Puertas Santas de la siguiente manera:
 La Basílica St. Mary Star of the Sea, 1010 Windsor Lane,
Key West. El rector, P. John Baker abrirá simbólicamente
la puerta en cada Misa: El sábado, 12 de diciembre, a las 6
p.m.; el domingo, 13 de diciembre, a las 7:30 y 10:30 a.m.

será presidida por el párroco, P. Kenneth Whittaker.  El Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Caridad, 3609 S.
Miami Ave., Miami, durante la Misa de las 3 de la tarde,

10 de la mañana, será presidida por el párroco, el padre jesuita,

durante la Misa de las 10:30 de la mañana, será presidida por el
párroco, el P. Michael Grady. Durante el Año Jubilar de la Misericordia, el Papa Francisco
concede indulgencias a los que visitan cualquiera de las cuatro
basílicas papales en Roma, la catedral del lugar en donde viven, o
cualquier santuario o iglesia designados por su obispo diocesano.
Las indulgencias también se conceden a toda persona que realice
"uno o más" de las tradicionales obras de misericordia, como
visitar a los enfermos, alimentar a los hambrientos, o dar refugio a
los sin techo. Estas acciones deben ir acompañadas por la
participación en los sacramentos de la reconciliación y de la
Eucaristía, una profesión de fe y oración por el Papa y sus
intenciones.
Los que están en prisión, enfermos o ancianos pueden obtener la
indulgencia asistiendo a la Misa o rezando en donde puedan, por

Biblical Reflection: Heb 11:1-12
The invisible God, from the fullness of his love, addresses men as his
friends, and moves among them, in order to invite and receive them
into his own company. The adequate response to this invitation is
faith. (CCC 142)
By faith, man completely submits his intellect and his will to God.
With his whole being man gives his assent to God the revealer. Sacred
Scripture calls this human response to God, the author of revelation
“the obedience of faith”. (CCC 143)
Faith is first of all a personal adherence of man to God. At the same
time and inseparably, it is a free assent to the whole truth that God has
revealed. As personal adherence to God and assent to his truth,
Christian faith differs from our faith in any human person. It is right
and just to entrust oneself wholly to God and to believe absolutely
what he says. It would be futile and false to place such faith in a
creature. (CCC 150)
…Faith is a gift of God, a supernatural virtue infused by him. “Before
this faith can be exercised, man must have the grace of God to move
and assist him; he must have the interior help of the Holy Spirit, who
moves de heart and converts it to God, who opens the eyes of the mind
and ‘makes it easy for all to accept and believe the truth’” (Dei Verbum
5). (CCC 153)
“Believing” is an ecclesial act. The Church’s faith precede, engenders,
support, and nourishes our faith. The Church is the mother of all
believers… (CCC 181)
St. Irenaeus wrote: “We guard with care the faith that we have received
from the Church, for without ceasing, under the action of God’s Spirit,
this deposit of great price, as if in an excellent vessel, is constantly
being renewed and causes the very vessel that contains it to be
renewed”, Adv. haeres. 3, 24, 1. (CCC 175)
Questions for discussion:
 What difficulties you find to share and live your faith in your
workplace, in the street, in your political options, in your social
and public relations?
 How do you understand your faith as your response to God that
created and gave you life?
 Who have been roles models of men and women of faith to you?
Why have them stand out in your opinion and impressed your
thoughts and actions?, What can you do to increase your faith?
 When the father that brings to Jesus his son possessed by a mute
spirit, the Lord asked him if he has faith, the man cried out “I do
believe, help my unbelief!” (Mk 9:14-29). How would you ask
God to help you to care and renew the faith that you have
received?
 At Mass end, the celebrant or deacon invites the faithful to go out
and share with everyone the peace and joy of our faith. How do
you share the faith that you receive during the Eucharistic
celebration with others? With whom you share your faith?

Reflexión Bíblica: Heb 11,1-12
Dios invisible habla a los hombres como amigo, movido por su gran
amor y mora con ellos para invitarlos a la comunicación consigo y
recibirlos en su compañía. La respuesta adecuada a esta invitación es la
fe. (CIC 142)
Por la fe, el hombre somete completamente su inteligencia y su voluntad
a Dios. Con todo su ser, el hombre da su asentimiento a Dios que revela.
La Sagrada Escritura llama “obediencia de la fe” a esta respuesta del
hombre a Dios que revela (cf. Rom 1,5; 16,26). (CIC 143)
La fe es ante todo una adhesión personal del hombre a Dios; es al mismo
tiempo e inseparablemente el asentimiento libre a toda la verdad que
Dios ha revelado. En cuanto adhesión personal a Dios y asentimiento a
la verdad que Él ha revelado, la fe cristiana difiere de la fe en una persona
humana. Es justo y bueno confiarse totalmente a Dios y creer
absolutamente lo que Él dice. Sería vano y errado poner una fe
semejante en una criatura. (CIC 150)
… La fe es un don de Dios, una virtud sobrenatural infundida por Él.
“Para dar esta respuesta de la fe es necesaria la gracia de Dios, que se
adelanta y nos ayuda, junto con el auxilio interior del Espíritu Santo, que
mueve el corazón, lo dirige a Dios, abre los ojos del espíritu y concede ‘a
todos gusto en aceptar y creer la verdad’” (Dei Verbum 5). (CIC 153)
“Creer” es un acto eclesial. La fe de la Iglesia precede, engendra,
conduce y alimenta nuestra fe. La Iglesia es la madre de todos los
creyentes… (CIC 181)
San Ireneo de Lyón escribió: “Esta fe que hemos recibido de la Iglesia, la
guardamos con cuidado, porque sin cesar, bajo la acción del Espíritu de
Dios, como un contenido de gran valor encerrado en un vaso excelente,
rejuvenece y hace rejuvenecer el vaso mismo que lo contiene”, Adv.
haeres. 3, 24, 1. (CIC 175)
Preguntas para discusión/reflexión:
 ¿Qué dificultades encuentras para compartir y vivir tu fe en el
trabajo, en la calle, en tus decisiones políticas, en tus relaciones
sociales y públicas?
 ¿Cómo tú entiendes la fe como tu respuesta a Dios que te ha
creado y dado la vida?
 ¿Qué personas han sido para ti modelos de hombres o mujeres de
fe? ¿Por qué se han destacado en ese sentido e impresionado tu
pensamiento y forma de actuar?, ¿Qué puedes hacer para
aumentar tu fe?
 El padre del joven que estaba poseído de un espíritu mudo, al
Jesús preguntarle si tenía fe, le contestó: “¡Señor, yo creo, pero
aumenta mi fe!” (Mc 9,14-29). ¿Cómo tú le pedirías a Dios que
aumente en ti el don de la fe?
 Al final de la Misa, el celebrante o el diácono invitan a los fieles
como despedida a salir y compartir con todos la paz y la alegría
de nuestra fe, ¿cómo compartes tú la fe que recibes en la
celebración Eucarística? ¿con quién compartes la fe?
