ecuerdo que de adolescente iba con mi padre, Antonio
–carpintero por pasatiempo– a las tiendas de herramientas y madera y me quedaba extasiado frente a estas colecciones de objetos entonces tan extraños, pues de la mayoría
ignoraba su utilización. Entrábamos en estos micromundos
de construcción donde todo se encontraba, desde un clavo hasta la casa prefabricada para el perrito; aquellos eran
los mismos lugares que hoy en día se han vuelto sinónimos
de baja calidad por el despiadado colonialismo comercial.
Mi mente viajaba por el mundo de la construcción, con la
ingenua certeza de que era posible construir todo lo que
imaginara.
Ahora aquellos deseos se han convertido en la necesidad
de construir para aprender; un aprender para compartir, de
aquí nace el proyecto TIERRA-LAB, Oaxaca.
En octubre de 2010 les presenté el proyecto para realizar un
taller de autoconstrucción, al director de la Facultad de Arquitectura “5 de Mayo”, UABJO, Arquitecto Ignacio Santiago

remember that as an adolescent I used to go with my father Antonio—a hobbyist carpenter—to the hardware
and wood stores and that I was transported by the collections of objects that then seemed so strange to me since I
didn’t know what they were used for. We entered those little
worlds of construction where you could find anything from
a nail to a prefabricated doghouse. Those same places have
become synonyms of inferior quality these days because of
pitiless commercial colonialism. In those days, though, my
mind travelled through the world of construction with the
ingenuous certainty that it was possible to build anything
that could be imagined.
Those desires have now been transformed into the necessity of building in order to learn and learning to share. That is

positivamente a tal iniciativa, manifestando una
gran sensibilidad hacia los temas programados
para el taller y también para el público beneficiario del mismo: estudiantes de arquitectura

El taller experimental Tierra-LAB, planteó el uso
de materiales de construcción alternativos, como
la tierra y el bambú, y la búsqueda constante de
un nuevo lenguaje arquitectónico, a través del
cual estos dos materiales encuentren un equilibrio en su combinación; este fue el reto de nuestra actividad: crear un hibrido arquitectónico

El proceso para la elección del proyecto a construirse, siguió
las más estrictas reglas de un verdadero concurso de arquitectura; en éste, los trabajos de los cuarenta y seis participantes,
divididos en nueve grupos, fueron sometidos a un jurado
compuesto por las siguientes personas: el Arq. Hans Kabsch
Vela, el Arq. Prometeo Sánchez Isla, el Mav. Rafael Moreno y
el Arq. Héctor Rivera Avilés. El jurado optó por la propuesta
del grupo compuesto por: Zaida Hernández, Misael Lavariega,
Liliana Acevedo, Irvin de Jesús Santiago y Daniel Lepiz; así es
que del concurso ellos fueron los ganadores.
El proceso constructivo resultó lleno de emociones y momentos difíciles; aspectos característicos del hacer arquitectura. La

The process for the selection of the project to be built followed the strictest rules of any real architectural competition.
The projects of the forty-six participants, divided into nine
groups, were submitted to a jury composed of architects Hans
Kabsch Vela, Prometeo Sánchez Islas and Héctor Riveras Avilés,
as well as engineer Rafael Moreno. The jury chose the project
submitted by the group composed of Zaida Hernández, Misael
Lavariega, Liliana Acevedo, Irvin de Jesús Santiago and Daniel
Lepiz, the fortunate winners of the rigorous selection.

los participantes, pues estuvo pletórico de pruebas y errores.
Durante el proceso se demolieron un número considerable de bloques. El grupo ganador experimentó los cambios
operados en su diseño durante el proceso de construcción, y
aprendió a escuchar repetidas veces las opiniones del grupo.
Se evidenció la rapidez de las construcciones en bambú y
la ventaja del aprovechamiento del los recursos locales, que
en este caso fueron el zacate y el carrizo. Pero finalmente,
lo más importante fue que todos aprendimos a aprender. Fue
una experiencia que nos dejó, a maestros y alumnos, mucho
más de lo que esperábamos. El ejercicio nos aportó, además
de conocimiento práctico, una gran lección humana.
Agradezco a los alumnos, quienes siempre mantuvieron vivo
su entusiasmo, por haber sido parte fundamental de este proyecto, y por hacerme ver que estas experiencias devienen en
momentos únicos e inolvidables. Experiencias como la descrita, son fundamentales en el proceso de aprendizaje escolar.
Ahora estoy convencido de que a veces se entra a una tienda
sólo por una pinza y se sale con mucho más.

chitecture. The stage of the molded walls was a real psychological challenge for the participants since it was filled with
trials and errors. During the process, a considerable number
of blocks were destroyed. The winning group experienced
the modifications that happened to their design during the
construction process, and they learned to listen to the repeated opinions of the group. What became evident was the
rapidity of construction with bamboo and the advantages of
using local materials, which in this case were reeds and straw.
All in all, the most important part was that we all learned
how to learn. It was an experience that gave all of us—professors and students alike—much more than we had hoped
to get. In addition to practical knowledge, the exercise gave
us a great human lesson.
I would like to express my appreciation to the students, who
never lost their enthusiasm, and who—by being a fundamental part of the project—helped me see that these shared
experiences give us unique, unforgettable moments. It is my
belief that experiences such as the ones described are essential in the learning process.
Yes…sometimes we step into a hardware store for just a pair
of pliers, and we come out with much, much more!
