Regional Congress is an annual, one day event, offered in each of the five pastoral regions and sponsored by the Archdiocese of Los
Angeles Office of Religious Educaon. Regional Congress offers a!endees opportunies to grow in their knowledge of the Catholic
faith, to deepen their spirituality, to increase their catechecal, liturgical, and leadership skills, and to be challenged by a variety of
current topics and presenters. The day includes three workshops, prayer and liturgical experiences, music and exhibitors. Depending on the region, workshops will be offered in English and Spanish. There really is something for everyone! The San Fernando Region averages 1100 a!endees, onsite, and it is our hope that you join us!
Youth Ministry Track
This year the San Fernando Regional Congress is offering a Youth Track. This is an opportunity for peer leaders to
continue growing in their faith and developing their leadership skills through workshops that are specifically intended for these young leaders. We ask that adults register for the youth track workshops only if they are bringing
youth participants. Please note that parishes and schools are responsible for providing the appropriate chaperones
and supervision for the youth they bring to the Regional Congress.
Workshop 116: Not Just Leaders, Christian Leaders; Leadership. When you hear this word, many different
things might come to mind. But peer leaders, like other Youth Ministry leaders, are called to a particular type of leadership: Christian leadership. Do you know what that really means? What is it that sets Christian leaders apart from other
leaders? How are you called to live this out? Come explore these questions…and more!
Workshop 206: Relationships: The Heartbeat of Youth Ministry;
Ministry; Just like a person’s heartbeat is essential for
the person to live, community is essential in Youth Ministry. And all community is built from relationships! As a peer
leader, there are things you can do to help form relationships that strengthen your Youth Ministry community. And who
knows, it might just help in your other relationships, too!
Workshop 312: Ministry is NOT an Individual Sport; There are things in life that you need to do by yourself,
but ministry is NOT one of them. When Jesus sent the disciples out on mission, he sent them two by two. Many gifts
are needed in ministry, and no one person has all of them! This workshop will give you a chance to try out some skills
that will allow everyone to use their gifts and make your Youth Ministry team more effective.

100 Are You a Disciple?
Cristina Alba
Just because you are a catechist, it doesn't mean you are a disciple!
Shocking words! After years of study and research, Sherry Weddell
describes the process of conversion and true discipleship in her book
"Forming Intentional Disciples." In light of the New Evangelization, come and discern where you are in your spiritual journey and
how you can lead others (children, families, and friends) into a deeper relationship with God.
Cristina Alba is the Director of Religious Education at St. John Vianney in Hacienda Heights. Her prior work as an elementary school
teacher as well as a catechist for the past 15 years have helped her
develop a successful Family Catechesis program at the parish. She is
also currently involved in the Advanced Catechetical Ministries
through the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
101 The Blessed Bullet: When Violence Strikes Closer Than
Home (Twice)
Dcn. Michael Bellinder
Deacon Mike experienced workplace violence first hand, and then
most recently, his daughter confronted the evil of terrorism at The
Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino.
Although violence and evil are so prevalent in our world today, one
never believes that he or she will be personally confronted by it once,
let alone twice. But sometimes upon hearing the devastating news on
TV, we wonder how we would react if confronted by evil. You are
invited to come and listen to a true encounter with utter violence, and
then you are challenged to live by the Gospel values in this ever dangerous world. Deacon Mike’s story has been called, “Life-changing,”
and “Deeply moving and stirring.”
Deacon Mike graduated college in 1973 with a Bachelor’s Degree in
Recreational Therapy. He and his wife, Marilyn, will soon be celebrating their 44th year of marriage. They have three children: Greg, an
associate professor at Azusa Pacific College; Colleen, a Social Worker
for the Inland Regional Center, and Annie, a meteorologist for the
State of California Air Resources Board. They have 5 wonderful
grandchildren whom they adore, ranging in age for 13 years to 4
months. Deacon Mike was ordained a Deacon for the Catholic
Church in December of 2006 and he absolutely loves his ministry,
especially preaching. Deacon Mike has shared his story and message
to many parishes as well as Wordnet Productions, Loma Linda TV’s
Journey of Hope, Immaculate Heart Radio, and Catholic TV.
102 The Catechist: Bringing Children to an Encounter with Jesus!
The Classroom: Holy Ground!
Eileen Fewless
In this workshop we will creatively explore bringing children to God
in the Holy Ground of the classroom by expanding lessons with
games, videos, and activities that are fun and hold the children’s interest and attention. Prayerfully bring yourself and your children to
a deeper friendship with Jesus.
Eileen Fewless is the Director of Faith Formation at St. Bernardine
in Woodland Hills, a Master Catechist, and travels to parishes giving
catechetical talks for RCLBenziger.
103 The Challenge of Planting Seeds of Faith:
Sr. Angela Hallahan
In this workshop, we will unpack the words of Jeremiah the Prophet.
"Blessed are those who trust in the LORD; the LORD will be their
trust. They are like a tree planted beside the waters that stretches out
its roots to the stream: It does not fear heat when it comes, its leaves
stay green; In the year of drought it shows no distress, but still produces fruit." - Jer. 17:7-8

this presentation.
105 Answering the Cry of the Poor through the Ministry of
Catechesis
Sergio Lopez
Scripture and Catholic teaching tell us that “The Lord hears the cry
of the poor” (Psalm 34). For more than 40 years, thousands of parishes across the U.S. have heard and responded to the cry of the poor
through Catholic Relief Services’ CRS Rice Bowl campaign. Join us
as we reflect on how catechists of all age levels can help our parishes
think outside of the box of mandated service hours and service projects and how we can create communities that strive to build the
Kingdom of God with their hunger and thirst for justice.
Sergio is a former youth minister and worship leader from the Archdiocese of LA. From early on in his ministry he made it his mission
to inspire parish Catholics to serve Christ in the poor and powerless.

107 “ What do I do??? Honoring Wishes and ChoicesChoices- Catholic
Ethics in Healthcare Decisions
Dr. Karen Pavic-Zabinski
Healthcare in the US continues to be marked by ongoing technological advancements. What are the moral principles that express the
Church’s teachings on medical and moral matters? How do these
principles engage in the ecclesial mission of health care? How do they
address both the theological and medical concrete situations one faces
in their lifetime especially at the end of one’s life? What am I to do?
What are we as a family to do? How do we even start this conversation? This workshop will address modern medical technology which
has given us opportunities to bring about cures, slow the process of
disease, alleviate symptoms and at times create hard decisions for
patients and their families.
Dr. Karen Pavic-Zabinski is the California Regional Director of Ethics for Providence & Health Services which includes Providence Holy
Cross, Providence Tarzana, Providence St Joseph, Providence St.

Preschoolers"
Jan Pedroza
It is "the most wonderful time of the year", however it can be the
most hurried, the most stressful and before you know it, we are celebrating New Years! How do we slow-down Christmas and effectively engage preschoolers in this most joyous event? Come (all ye faithful) and find out!

109 “Blessed are Those Who Are F.A.T. for They Will Lead the
People of God!”
Eddie Perez
Are you interested in leading people to Christ? Why are some people
more effective in this area than others? God chooses the F.A.T. to
lead His people. As servants of The Lord, we need to be Faithful to
God, Available to God, and always Teachable. Failing to do so means
we will be in danger of leading others astray. A great problem in our
parishes is that oftentimes we represent ourselves rather than Christ.
If we want to lead the people of God, we need to remember Whom
we are representing. I must decrease that He may increase!

wholeness...holiness.

113 Legend or Lord?: The Divinity of Jesus in the Gospels
Fr. Parker Sandoval
The content of the Christian message is the person of Jesus Christ.
Our mission to evangelize, therefore, hinges on his identity. Many
see him as nothing more than a great teacher or wonder-worker, but
Jesus claims to be the very presence of God among us. These claims
are either legendary, or he is who he says he is: the Lord himself.
Come walk through Jesus's divine claims in each of the four Gospels.
Fr. Parker Sandoval is a priest of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles; he
is associate pastor of Resurrection Church in Boyle Heights. Fr.
Parker is a regular speaker on Evangelization, the Scriptures, and the
Liturgy.

202 What Makes Us Church: Events That Have Shaped Us
- Trends We Are Facing - Beliefs We Hold Dear"
Joan Doyle
Using the wisdom of others, media from unexpected sources, and
our own reflections, this session will allow us an opportunity to
reflect briefly on (1) the peak moments in our history that have
made us what we are today; (2) current trends that impact our present-day experience and lead us into the future; and (3) the core
beliefs of our faith that sustain us, no matter what.
Joan Doyle, a nationally certified Lay Ecclesial Minister, is a catechetical consultant, workshop presenter, and writer. She has held a
variety of positions in her Los Angeles parish, St. Paul the Apostle
(junior high religion teacher and assistant principal; parish DRE).

203 Turning Inward
Dominik Gnirs
Faster, bigger, newer, better – so often we seek more and more of
the ‘outer things’. Are we forgetting that there is an inner dimension
in us regarding people, events and even things? This workshop explores this inward side of life through the eyes of writers, theologians and history. It will discuss how recognizing and growing this
‘inner self’ can play a role to attain ‘peace of heart’.
Dominik Gnirs is the Coordinator of Adult Faith Formation at the
Office of Religious Education in Los Angeles. He holds a Magister
in Theology from the University of Vienna, Austria. He has been in
Youth Ministry for 15 years and directed youth retreats and worked
for the Kardinal Konig Haus Adult Education Center in Vienna. He
lives with his wife in Central Los Angeles.
SESSION II 12:45—2:15 pm.
204 Growing as Missionary Disciples
Kay Harter
Even though we understand our call to share the Good News of
Jesus Christ in our lives, it is not always easy. It can be challenging,
uncomfortable and easy to doubt our ability to be an effective Missionary Disciple. Come and discover 5 keys that will unleash the
evangelist God has created you to be!
Kay serves as a Master Catechist and Director of Evangelization for
the San Fernando Region. A native of the California high desert,
she has been married for 30 years, is the mother of four and grandmother to 3.
205 What Every Serious Christian Should Know About Judaism
Rabbi Michael Lotker
Did you know that Judaism is much more than the religion of the
Hebrew Bible? Did you know that Jews have sacred literature beyond
the Hebrew Bible (that we have our own "New Testament")? Did
you know that Jews mean something completely different than Christians when we speak of the Messiah, sin, redemption, salvation, repentance and forgiveness? Come and question, learn and explore
with Rabbi Michael Lotker, author of "A Christian's Guide to Judaism" published by the Paulist Press.
Rabbi Lotker comes to us with a wealth of experience. A Phi Beta
Kappa/Magna Cum Laude physicist, he spent the bulk of his first
career in the alternative energy business, working in wind power, solar
and geothermal energy. About 500 of the windmills that are spinning
in Palm Springs, California were financed and installed by a company
that Mike was President of. In 2003, he was ordained as a rabbi at
Hebrew Union College in Los Angeles, where he also received his
Master of Hebrew Letters degree. He is presently Rabbi for the Jewish Community of Ojai, California and the Community Rabbi for the
Jewish Federation of Ventura County. In addition to his studies,
Mike has published a book for the Paulist Press entitled "A Christian's Guide to Judaism."
206 Youth Track: Relationships: The Heartbeat of Youth Ministry
Youth Team
Just like a person’s heartbeat is essential for the person to live, community is essential in Youth Ministry. And all community is built
from relationships! As a peer leader, there are things you can do to
help form relationships that strengthen your Youth Ministry community. And who knows, it might just help in your other relationships, too!

207 "Seasons of Life: Growing in Age and Wisdom."
Kay Murdy
St. Luke tells us that the child Jesus grew in age, wisdom and grace.
This is our challenge through all the seasons of our lives. When we
are young we think we know everything. As we mature we wonder if
we know anything. As we grow older, we realize that that it's what we
learn after we think we know it all that counts!
Kay has a Master's Degree in Religious Studies from Mount St.
Mary's College, and is a Master Catechist for the LA Archdiocese.
Kay is the founder and member of the teaching team of the Catholic
Bible Institute co-sponsored by the Archdiocese Office of Religious
Education and Loyola Marymount University. Kay has written five
books on scripture and spirituality for Liturgy Training Publications,
and one for Ligouri Publications. Her novel, Song of the Dove, a
story of Mary of Nazareth, was published by ACTA, 2014.
E N G L I S H 208 “Pray, Speak Up and Act to Fight Human Trafficking."
Susan Patterson
What the talk will cover: Human Trafficking is the fastest growing
illegal enterprise in the U.S. victimizing over 100,000 kids every year.
The talk will cover what parents need to know to protect their own
children from becoming Trafficking victims and provide many ideas
for what individuals and faith communities can do that will make a
big difference in the fight against Human Trafficking. Participants
will come away from the talk clear about what Trafficking "looks
like" in the communities where they live and what they can personally
do about it.
Susan Patterson is the author of the book “How You Can Fight Human Trafficking, Over 50 Ways to Join the Fight.” She speaks to
thousands of people every year in the faith community empowering
individuals and groups to fight what has become the fastest growing
illegal enterprise in the U.S. Her book outlines what anyone, no matter what their age or station in life can do to fight Human Trafficking
right where they live with what they have. The book has been
acknowledged by Human Trafficking task forces to be one of the best
resources out there, because it is practical.
209 Chaplaincy: What I Learn From the Hospital Teaches me how
to Preach and Teach with God's Mercy, Truth and Compassion. We
are all Story Catcher's.
Fr. Christopher Ponnet
Teachers, parents, friends and priests, we are all given the gift of listening to stories in the classroom, confessional or over a cup of tea.
What I have learned from the bedside informs my ministry and service as a preacher, confessor, educator and family member and friend.
Walking with someone affected by AIDS or cancer, an inmate or a
intern, gay person or blended married person--all invite me to be the
presence and voice of God's Mercy, Truth and Compassion. Come
with your experience and I will share mine, as we see common values
and styles of living and teaching God's Mercy.
Ordained for Los Angeles Archdiocese 1983, Fr. Ponnet is Pastor
and chaplain at St. Camilus Center for Spiritual Care. He also serves
as Director of Office of Catholic HIV/AIDS Ministry, Board of
Death Penalty Focus, Pax Christi Southern California, Angel Interfaith Network, Catholic Ministry with Gay and Lesbian Persons and
Interfaith Communities United for Justice and Peace.
210 Peace in the Storm: Growing in Faith and Love While Living
with Illness and Pain
Maureen Pratt
Illness and pain can be terrible, isolating burdens or they can serve as
opportunities for us to grow deeply in faith and love. But how do we
find the energy, time, and desire to do this when we hurt so very
deeply? In this workshop, we will explore how laughter, imagination,
sacred music, and art can help us nurture a weary soul, refresh a tired
spirit, and help us forge a positive purpose from any health challenge. (Note: This workshop is designed for caregivers and people
with chronic pain and illness).
Maureen Pratt is an author, syndicated columnist with Catholic
News Service, and a frequent contributor to Saint Anthony Messenger Magazine, Relevant Radio (Catholic radio), and Beliefnet.com.
She writes and speaks about prayer, spirituality, and living with faith
while facing health challenges and other crises. She is the author of
"Peace in the Storm: Meditations on Chronic Pain & Illness" and
"Beyond Pain: Job, Jesus, and Joy." Her newest book is "Don't Panic!: How to Keep Going When the Going Gets Tough" (Franciscan
Media, Spring 2016)

211 "Bless me Father, for I am a Catechist"

212 “The Parish – Home of Evangelization”
Bishop Gerald Wilkerson
“The parish is where the Church lives. Parishes are communities of
faith, of action, and of hope. They are where the gospel is proclaimed and celebrated, where believers are formed and sent to renew
the earth. Parishes are the home of the Christian community; they
are the heart of our Church.”
Bishop Gerald Wilkerson was ordained a priest in 1965 and has a
B.A. from St. John’s Seminary College, Camarillo and a M.A. in Sacred Theology from Catholic University of America, Washington,
D.C. He was pastor of Our Lady of Grace, Encino and was ordained
Auxiliary Bishop of L. A. and appointed Bishop for the San Fernando Region on January 21, 1998. Although Bishop Wilkerson is enjoying his retirement as of 2015 he still is active in his parish of Our
Lady of Lourdes and in the San Fernando Region.
213 The Whale, The Ark and The Lion's Den
Michelle Youssef
The stories we are told as children live within us, inform our moral
and faith compass and as we grow older, they come to hold deeper
meaning in our lives. Identifying with the life and struggles of a character in a literary story, a biblical figure, or a saint instills a sense of
belonging and community in the faith life of a child which brings
their own personal faith to life. This workshop will show you how to
bring your classroom alive with the power of scripture, the lives of
the saints, and storytelling.
Michelle Youssef is currently the Director of Faith Formation for
the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. She was the Consultant for
Elementary Catechesis at the Office of Religious Education in the
Los Angeles Archdiocese for four years. She has a Bachelors degree
in Theology from the University of Notre Dame and a Masters in
Theology from Loyola Marymount University. She has six years of
experience in high school ministry as a theology teacher and as the
Director of Campus Ministry and Community Service at Marymount High School in Los Angeles.
Excellence in Catechetical Service Award (ECSA)

301 Attention Women! What Seeds Are We Planting?
Sr. Kathleen Bryant
Whether we are catechists, mothers, grandmothers, aunties or sisters
we all impact each other by our deepest held beliefs. Explore some

302 Faith + Enthusiasm + Teaching Tips = Successful Classes
John Collins
A catechist is someone who can ignite a “spark” of faith in others, not
so much by the content he or she teaches, but by the example and
witness he or she is in the classroom. Catechists have a teacher manual for the content, but they’re always looking for more ideas and activities for an engaging and successful lesson. This session will help
catechists respond to the call to teach and be a witness in the classroom. John will provide a wealth of practical and creative ideas,
strategies, and management tips for the faith formation classroom.
You will leave with a feeling of, “I really CAN do this!” You CAN
have a successful class!
John is a retired elementary school principal, former Director of Curriculum and Professional Development and elementary school teacher.
He is also a former DRE and catechist. John has worked with Sadlier in the northeast for many years, and is now a full-time National
Religion Consultant with Sadlier. He is a keynote speaker and workshop presenter. John has experience both as a professional educator
and a catechetical leader.
303 The 7 Keys To Understanding Scripture.
Timothy Crehan
A biblical professor once said to me, "It is good to read the Bible in
the 21st century, in Los Angeles, in English. Just don't read the
Bible as if it were written in the 21st century, in Los Angeles, in English." How then do we understand sacred writings that were composed in a time, place and language so different from our own?
Bring your Bible and join Timothy Crehan as he presents seven key
concepts that will improve your understanding of both the Old and
New Testaments.

307 "Illuminating Church Teaching on Homosexuality on the Year
of Mercy"
Frank McKown
Since the beginning of his papacy, Pope Francis has reached out to
people on the margins of our Church, including Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Catholics. In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, with its
theme of “revolution of tenderness,” we will explore where Church
Teachings meet reality for LGBT Catholics, especially for those in
long term relationships who have children. Can the journeys of Gay
and Lesbian people help broaden the Catholic concept of human
sexuality and what it means to be a family?

308 Religion in Popular Culture
Michael McNaught
If you look to popular culture for answers to the great questions, you
may be surprised at what you find! For many, works of art, music,
cinema, and other media are a source of spiritual fulfillment outside
of the parish. How should we understand this phenomenon? What
does this mean for us in pastoral ministry and education? Join us for
a discussion on popular culture, its reflection of and influence on
religion, and the challenges and opportunities it presents for those in
pastoral work.

and Spirituality at Loyola Marymount University. He currently

309 Don't Panic!: How to Keep Going When the Going Gets Tough
Maureen Pratt
Natural disasters, violence in our communities, and personal trauma,
such as death of a loved one are only a few of the crises we face today.
These serious challenges might make us feel like panicking, but our
faith gives us strong tools to use so that we are strong, resilient, and
spiritually fit for any challenge that might occur. Based on the new
book, Don't Panic!: How to Keep Going When the Going Gets
Tough (Franciscan Media, 2016), this workshop will explore the
physical, emotional and spiritual resources we have around us and
within us. It will offer practical and prayerful ways to approach any
crisis. And it will provide examples from lives of the Saints, historic
figures and everyday, contemporary people, to inspire and encourage
each of us that, no matter what the crisis, we don't have to panic!

one person has all of them! This workshop will give you a chance to
try out some skills that will allow everyone to use their gifts and make
your Youth Ministry team more effective.

“Vosotros no me habéis elegido a Mí, Yo soy
quien los ha elegido a vosotros”. ( Jn 15,16 ).

nuestro tiempo hacia Dios.
