Volunteer Happenings
Ice Cream Social Volunteer Appreciation Event and Open House
The Network Volunteer Center invited existing and prospective Network Volunteers to our Ice
Cream Social Event on Thursday, September 17. At the presentation starting the event, Network Volunteer Center Coordinator, Ryan Steinmetz, shared with those in attendance some of
the great things Network Volunteers have been up to in the year that he has served as Volunteer Coordinator. “Our volunteers put in over 25,000 hours of community service and grew to
over 300 volunteers in this past fiscal year,” Steinmetz said. “We have started a new Food 4
Paws program, providing food for animals of Meals on Wheels recipients, added over 90 new
volunteers and connected 113 volunteers from area youth groups, schools, churches, and organizations to service opportunities in our community. It’s an amazing testament to the great
community Las Cruces is!”
Local LDS Missionaries helping at the Ice Cream Social Event
The event also honored the Munson Center Community Gardeners who were on hand to have
an open house for the Munson Garden. Volunteer co-managers Nancy Breard and Tony
Nuñez spoke about the impact of the garden in the community. In 2015, the community garden, whose mission is to provide healthy produce to Las Cruces seniors, distributed over 560
pounds of fresh vegetables to seniors served by the Munson Center, Senior Programs’ Mealson-Wheels routes, and local Veterans groups. The garden grew this year to include a flower
garden and composting section, and was a part of the 2015 Tour of Gardens. The group
acknowledged Mayor Miyagishima, City of Las Cruces’ Parks and Recreation Department and
Senior Programs for their ongoing support, as well as Thrivent Financial and the Las Cruces
Home Depot store who provided a new canopy and compost bins for the Community Garden.
Attendees were served a variety of ice cream flavors with many choices of toppings provided
by Sagecrest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Area missionaries with the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-Day Saints were on hand to help with the tasks of set-up, tear-down and icecream-scooping! Special thanks were given to Network Volunteers, Robert Hoffman (taking
pictures), and Wanda Ireland, as well as many from the Senior Programs staff for making the
event a success. Special thanks were also given to families from Peace Lutheran Church who
helped to do a Munson Center grounds clean-up and make origami figures for the event!

Domo Arigatou Gozaimasu, Mr. Miyagishima! by Ryan Steinmetz
Remembering our volunteer story is always an important part of the work we do at The Network Volunteer Center. During our Ice Cream Social Event, we took time to remember The
Network’s history as the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program as a part of our observance of
“Respect for the Aged Day,” a celebration in Japan that honors seniors in the country.
On hand to share with us his experience as an RSVP Volunteer was Mr. Mike Miyagishima. A
local veteran of the Korean War, Mr. Miyagishima was born in California to Japanese immigrants. He moved to Las Cruces with his wife in 1971 where he raised his family and graduated from New Mexico State University in 1973.
Miyagishima, now 85, said of his RSVP volunteer experience, “Of all the things I did as a volunteer, I remember my work with the Special Olympics program the most. I helped out with
events and got to see the smiles on the kids’ faces that participated. I loved my time there
most of all.”

THE MESSENGER
Mr. Miyagishima was on hand to teach our volunteers how to say “Thank You” in Japanese.
He taught us the polite form of thank you—”Domo arigatou gozaimasu”—which we used to
honor our senior volunteers. And we say, “Domo arigatou gozaimasu” to you, Mr. Miyagishima, for your example in our community as an RSVP Volunteer, past and present. Thank you
for being a part of our day!

Animal Services Center of Mesilla Valley
The local Animal Services Center is always in need of volunteers. Network Volunteers interested in volunteering with the Center must also go through their volunteer orientation process in addition to the Network’s.
Branigan Cultural Center
Library Sale—Volunteers are needed to help with a Library Sale on October 30, 31 and November 1. Preparing and organizing books, set-up and tear-down, sale
counters
Volunteer Cleaning Crew—Old books create a lot of dust! We need volunteers to help with the continuous cleaning of bookshelves and books throughout the
library.
HR Department—Volunteers are needed to help out in the office answering phones and doing other office tasks everyday from 3:00-5:00, but especially on Fridays!
Juvenile Citation Program—Office Volunteers are needed for this important program working with youth in our community.
Munson Center Community Garden
Compost Committee—Volunteers are still needed to help our compost committee continue its commitment to sustainability. Jobs include transporting the compost collected by the Munson kitchen to the compost piles and regular turning and aerating the compost.
Museums—All Museums—There is a huge need for greeters, tour guides and receptionist people for these museums, and on weekends in particular. Museum volunteers are also especially needed for the afternoon hours.
Railroad Museum—Volunteers are needed on Thursday afternoons and every other Saturday
Museum of Nature and Science—Volunteer receptionist/office assistant needed on Saturdays from 9:00-4:30.
Rat-on-a-Stick Booth—No it’s not really “rat”, but every year the museum has a booth at the Renaissance Fair to fundraise for museum expenses and events. Volunteers are needed to help with running the booth! It’s a fun event that also allows for you to get into the Renaissance Fair for free.

Meals on Wheels Respite Driver—Help deliver much-needed meals to our senior population
Kitchen Aide—The Papen Center is in need of a kitchen aide to help in the rolling of silverware, collecting and washing of trays, etc.
Breakfast Packer—Help to pack nutritious breakfasts for Meals on Wheels recipients
Weed and Seed Program and After-School Programs—Working with Youth
Tutor/Activity Support—Working on tutoring and other programming with area youth through Weed and Seed
Mentor—Working one-on-one with a youth matched with you through the Weed and Seed program
Office Assistant—Volunteers are needed to help run the front desk, organize youth registrations and answer incoming phone calls

Volunteer Fair Steering Committee—Volunteers are needed to help plan this important event in our community highlighting volunteer opportunities.

Community Volunteer Needs
CARE Las Cruces
The Cancer Aid Resource and Education organization, serving local cancer patients, survivors and their families by helping them obtain services or other
assistance as they cope with their cancer diagnosis. A fully volunteer organization, CARE is currently looking for office assistants to help with various
office tasks so that more people are aware of the services that are offered by CARE in our community.
Roadrunner Food Bank
Volunteers are needed to help out with community food distribution centers that distribute much-needed food to families in need each month.
2nd Annual Monster Run Event needs volunteers to help out with set-up, passing out water, and tear-down on Oct. 24.
Disabled American Veterans (DAV)
DAV is looking for volunteer drivers to drive their vans, transporting veterans to medical and other appointments in both Las Cruces and in El Paso. A
great opportunity to give back to all our veterans who have given so much in service to our country!
Mesilla Valley Community of Hope
Volunteers are needed to help serve area homeless individuals and families by serving at the front desk and connecting people to needed services.
OYE! Celebrating Visions for the Future!
The OYE! Committee is preparing for a great event in the fall to bring together the arts, businesses, non-profit organizations, and community members
together around the theme of how our community can collectively address issues related to global warming. Volunteers are needed to help make phone
calls, recruit and connect with event participants, and help with the organization of the event slated to take place in October! Come and help make this
event a success!

A Message From Roger About Your Suggested Donations
Senior Nutrition has posted our average donation at each meal site along with a year-to-date donation goal tracker. Each participant has an opportunity to voluntarily contribute towards the cost of
the meal service. For August, the average donation for congregate meals was $1.05. The average donation for Meals-on-Wheels was $0.66.
Guests often ask if I am aware that not every person is making a donation. Others ask why we provide confidentiality screens around the donation box, or, why there is a lack of communication to
publicize that donations are low. With those questions as the background, I would like to share with you the following information.
Senior Nutrition does not charge eligible participants for a meal, but rather offer guests a suggested donation. In practice, there is no, “one size fits all” when it comes to collecting donations. There
are guests who make donations daily. Guests who make a donation either once a week or once a month. There are also guests who do not donate at all.
There is a policy from our funders, the Non-Metro Area Agency on Aging, which Senior Nutrition must follow in order to continue the meal program. Please pay attention to the following information.

Providers must insure confidentiality of contributions

Providers shall provide participants with an opportunity to voluntarily contribute.

Provides shall establish appropriate procedures to safeguard and account for all contributions.

Under no circumstances can a person be denied services based on a personal decision not to contribute for services.
I cannot stress enough the importance of your donations. Every dollar you donate is spent on your Senior Nutrition Program. We use the donations to purchase food, pay staff wages, pay
for the utilities and send you informational materials. Donating to the Senior Nutrition Program is easy. Please see the next page to learn how you can contribute to make a difference. Thank you
to all those who continue to donate. I would like to invite those who have not to consider doing so.

Refer-A-Friend Back in Action

The refer-a-friend incentive is up and running now through December 18,
2015. The contest is simple. Refer a friend or family member who you think
will participate in the congregate meal program. Ask the Office Assistant at
the meal site for a postcard. Fill in the blanks on the front of the card. Have
your friend bring in the postcard when they register for Senior Programs.
Then, the new client gives the card to a Senior Program staff member. Sign
up for a meal and enjoy! Both the inviter and invitee will be eligible to win a
prize. Earlier this year, Senior Nutrition gave away two Kindle Fires as the
prize. The more people you refer, the more chances to have to win. Good

.Refiere-A- un Amigo Patras en acción.
El incentivo a Refiere-A-un Amigo será disponible hasta el 18 de diciembre
del 2015. El concurso es fácil. Los participantes refieren a un amigo o pariente para que se registre y participe en el programa de la comida de congregación. Pidale a la asistente de oficina una tarjeta. Llene el frente de la
