Study Outlines Path To Increasing
Hispanics’ College-Graduation Rates
Distinctive attributes characterize profiled campuses
Colleges and universities
across the country can promote
greater academic success
among Hispanic students by
emulating the practices of 11
public universities with
higher-than-average
graduation rates for such
students, says a new report
from the American Association
of State Colleges and
Universities (AASCU) and The
Education Trust.
The report of the Hispanic
Student Success Study,
Promoting Success for
Hispanic Students at State
Colleges and Universities:
Creating Supportive Spaces on
Our Campuses, will be
released October 20 at the
annual conference of the
Hispanic Association of
Colleges and Universities in
Chicago.
“The colleges and universities
that participated in this study
have identified factors that
lead to students’ academic
success and graduation, most
notably strong presidential
leadership and a commitment
to an inclusive campus
culture,” said Constantine W.
(Deno) Curris, president of
AASCU.
“Campuses dedicated to
access and opportunity can
learn significant lessons from
their colleagues highlighted in
this study.”
The results of the in-depth
study demonstrate that any
institution “can achieve levels
of success for Hispanic
students similar to those at the
institutions studied, given the
proper combination of
leadership, programs that
recognize the distinctive
cultures and academic
experiences of Hispanic
students, and ‘persistent
consistency’ in decisionmaking,” says the report.
While there is no one
program or practice that
guarantees high graduation
rates for Hispanic students, the
study found that successful
institutions exhibited “some
distinctive characteristics in
three areas: mission and
culture,
student-success
programming,
and
organizational leadership and
development.” Together, these
formed an amalgam of
supports for students across
campus that increased
retention and graduation rates.
For example, in the area of
mission and culture, the report
said, the successful institutions
highlighted their commitment
to Hispanic students’ success
in their mission statements and
public communications and
had recruited a “critical mass”
of Hispanic students, one large
enough to create a viable
“community
within
a
community.”
In the area of student
programming, the institutions
had created networks to help
Hispanic students remain
connected to their families and
communities, along with oncampus networks encouraging
mutual support among
Hispanic students. Many
institutions also had academic
programs in Hispanic studies
and special programs for
Hispanic students within
traditional academic majors.

presidents at the institutions

Holiday Mail Deadlines
& Packaging/Mailing Tips
Don’t look now, but the busy
holiday mail season is fast
approaching. The U.S. Postal
Service expects to handle more
than 21 billion pieces of
holiday mail nationwide this
year.
“While it is till early, it always
pays to mail as early as
possible, especially for mailing
to our military troops in Iraq
and Afghanistan and stationed
overseas,” says Colorado
Springs Customer Relations
Coordinator Ron Perry. “The
earlier you can mail those
holiday packages, you can also
save on postage.”
Perry and the U. S. Postal
Service provide these 2007
general holiday mail deadlines
and packaging/mailing tips.
- Deadline to mail to most U.S.
military troops stationed
overseas, and to most
international countries for
delivery by Christmas is Dec.
11. Express Mail is still
available until Dec. 18 for
sending packages to most
military overseas locations and
by Dec. 17 to most
international countries.
- As for domestic U.S. mail
deadlines, for delivery by
Christmas, the Postal Service
recommends mailing by
Friday, Dec. 20. Express Mail
is available until Dec. 22 to
most major metro area U.S.
destinations.

Latino Voters Do Vote By Mail— But Only if We Let Them
Executive Summary:
• Heavily Latino precincts had
a turnout that was 37
percentage points lower than
Denver as a whole in the
November 2004 presidential
election,
which
used
traditional polling places.
Citywide, turnout was 79
percent while the turnout in
these 48 heavily Latino
precincts averaged 42 percent.
• In the May 2005 polling place
election, turnout in these same
heavily Latino precincts was 14
percentage points lower than
the city as a whole. The city as
a whole saw turnout of 25
percent while Latino voters
turned out at an 11 percent
rate.

• In the May 2007 all mail
election, turnout in heavily
Latino precincts was only 3
percentage points lower than
the city as a whole. Denver saw
turnout of 43 percent of active
voters citywide while the 48
heavily Latino precincts saw a
turnout of 40 percent.
However, legally registered
voters who were designated
“inactive” were not included in
this figure and did not receive
ballots in the mail.
• Colorado’s Inactive Voter
Policy meant that only 189,527
voters were designated as
active in the May 2007 election.
This compares to 250,389 active
voters in the 2005 municipal
election and 304,706 active
voters in the 2004 presidential
election. While the city as a
whole saw a decline of 38
percent in active voters, the 48
heavily Latino precincts saw a
decline of 50 percent.
• The 48 most heavily Latino
precincts comprised 11 percent
of Denver ’s electorate in
November 2004, but by May of
2007 this had declined to 8.9
percent. Colorado’s inactive
voter policy thus most likely
has the impact of making
turnout among any group that
traditionally faces lower rates
of participation even lower in
future elections.
PCC promotes work-force development
through new YOS partnership
Pueblo Community College
has reached an educational
partnership agreement with
the Colorado Department of
Corrections to provide
academic and vocational
classes to youths who are
incarcerated at the Colorado
Youth Offender System (YOS)
in Pueblo.
The new partnership is
another means by which PCC
is taking a strong leadership
role in providing higher
education to an underserved
segment of the community in
an effort to support Pueblo’s
work-force development. It
also complements perfectly the
YOS mission of helping youth
offenders develop the useful
skills and self-discipline that
will help them return to society
as members of the work force.
Through the Colorado Youth
Offender
Postsecondary
Program, PCC will expose
students to higher education
and provide them with skills
that will help make them
employable once they are
released from the YOS.

curriculum, meaning these

state college or university in
which they subsequently
enroll upon their release.
At the same time, the
agreement represents an
initiative that could help
reduce Colorado’s future crime
rate. New research from the
Justice Policy Institute has
found that states making the
biggest investments in higher
education have had the biggest
drops in violent crimes.
“This is an example of how
PCC is aggressively pursuing
programs and partnerships
that will support the workforce
development of all of the
different elements within our
community,” said Laura

President of Learning, who
played an integral role in
developing the agreement. “It
also aligns with our mission of
providing students with the
skills they need for personal

To me, a fellow Army Retiree, yes it was nice to meet and speak with the General,
but I was more impressed by the people that gathered that evening to share the

Latino Alumni Reunion at UCCS

of the alumni joined us and
shared stories with us. Perhaps
our small group took them
back in time to when they
themselves gathered together,
organizing events or just

was beginning to eye us, we
made our way outside.
But as we walked, I looked
Members of UCCS Latino(a) Alumni from 1974 to 1980
Unless you’re the geek who is
now a multi-millionaire, you
usually aren’t too excited about
your school reunion.
On the contrary, most people
dread them because, in order
to prepare for them, dieting
and looking absolutely perfect
is necessary, or so we’re told…
but what if there was a reunion
where it didn’t matter how you
looked or how rich you had
become – all that mattered was
that you came “home” and
spent some quality time with
la familia. This was the UCCS
Latino/a Alumni Reunion – in
a nutshell.
The Latino/a Alumni
Reunion was organized by
Carmen Abeyta, a UCCS
alumna herself, whose goal
was to reconnect former
students and hear their success
stories. Abeyta also hoped that
current students would have
the opportunity to meet and
talk with their predecessors
and get some advice.
The event was a great success,
with approximately 100 people
in attendance – including the
first UCCS Latino graduate
(1974) – with people coming
“home” from Denver, Greeley,
the Arkansas Valley, the San
Luis Valley, New Mexico, and
even Florida.
As the alumni and their
guests began arriving, current
UCCS students eagerly
awaited to escort them to the
gym – on the red carpet – of
course. As we led the alumni
and their guests through the
University Center, many
shared stories and reminisced
about their time at UCCS:
“Back when I was here…”
One of the recurring themes of
the night seemed to be the fond
memories that the alumni had
of El Teatro, and consequently,
at the request of the keynote
speaker and the alumni, “De
Colores” was sung. Although
unrehearsed, it was a special
moment as people gathered on
stage and bellowed out this
song, full of special memories.
The keynote speaker, Jose
Fernandez, then followed with
a message that was both
memorable and inspirational,
ending with the words, “Never
give up. Never give up. Never
give up.”
Throughout the night, the
attendees shared stories from
their time at UCCS. A few
talked about their successes,
even after having been
discouraged by those around
them. Others talked about the
fond memories of going to
school at UCCS, and then there
were heart-felt mentions of
mentors, people who had

motivated and encouraged
these young students to
succeed, in whatever field they
chose. Interestingly enough,
the majority of the alumni have
ended up in the fields of social
work, counseling, and higher
education.
The evening then officially
ended with a special speech by
current student Luis Garcia,
who talked about his own
experience at UCCS. It was
somewhat humbling to see
Garcia up on stage, making
this speech, because it forced
us current students to
acknowledge that we would
not be here, had it not been for
those who courageously paved
the road for us. The battles they
fought and overcame are the
reason why we are here today,
standing on their broad
shoulders.
As the event started to wind
down and people began to
leave, a small group of us
current students magnetically
gathered around one of the
tables, and we sat down for one
of our lengthy conversations.
As we sat there, discussing
everything from race to politics
to dreams to friendships, some
back one last time, to take a
mental picture of the evening:
it had been full of laughter and
chatter between the alumni
and the current students.
Yes, our worlds are different,
the struggles we’re fighting for
are different, our names our
different, but I don’t think
we’re all that different.
In the end, we’re just a closeknit group of friends, students,
and future alumni in la familia.

El Embarazo Después De Cáncer De Mama Es Posible
Una vez que Alyssa Tushman
tuvo la certeza de que su hijo
no crecería sin madre, su
pregunta siguiente fue si él
sería hijo único.
A los 27 años y poco después
de que tuvo su primer hijo a
Tushman se le diagnosticó
cáncer de mama en la fase III.
Después de un tratamiento
agresivo,
que
incluyó
quimioterapia, terapia de
radiación, una mastectomía
doble
y
cirugía
de
reconstrucción, Tusham tuvo la
alegría de saber que era posible
que tuviese otro bebé. Y ahora
va por su tercer embarazo.
La mayoría de las mujeres
están por encima de los 50 años
de edad y piensan ya en sus
nietos cuando se les
diagnostica cáncer de mama.
Pero ¿qué le ocurre al número
creciente de mujeres en sus
veinte y treinta años a quienes
se les diagnostica el cáncer
cuando todavía están de
noviazgo, son recién casadas o
empiezan a tener hijos?
A pesar de los regímenes
tóxicos de quimioterapia que
pueden trastornar la función
ovárica, es posible, y sano, que
muchas mujeres conciban
después del tratamiento del
cáncer de mama, según el
doctor Daniel F. Hayes,
director clínico del programa
de oncología de mama en el
Centro Integral de Cáncer del
Sistema de Salud de la
Universidad de Michigan.
“La fertilidad es algo de lo que
hablamos con nuestros
pacientes.
Procuramos
explicarles sus posibilidades.
Es una discusión que será
específica para cada paciente
porque depende de cuál sea su
edad, si debe recibir
quimioterapia, qué tipo de
quimioterapia, y si a ella le
importa el mantenerse fértil”,
dice Hayes.
“La mayoría de los que
trabajamos
en
esta
especialidad no tratamos de
persuadir a las mujeres para
que eviten el embarazo. Lo que
Negocios
hemos aprendido mejor son
algunas de las precauciones”.
Varios son los factores que
afectarán la función ovárica
después del tratamiento del
cáncer, incluido si la mujer
recibe quimioterapia. La
mayoría de las quimioterapias
tienen un efecto adverso sobre
la función de los ovarios, pero
la edad de la mujer también
tiene mucho que ver, indica
Hayes.
Las mujeres más jóvenes
tienen probabilidades mucho
mayores de recuperar su
período
después
del
tratamiento que las mujeres
que están más cerca de la
menopausia.
La menstruación de Tushman
retornó unos tres meses
después que concluyó el
tratamiento. Se le había
diagnosticado el cáncer justo
cuatro meses después de que
dio a luz su primer hijo. “Me
espantaba la idea de que mi
hijo crecería sin su madre. Ésa
fue la peor parte, la más
Apoyando
la
terrible de todo el asunto”, dice
Tushma, ahora de 31 años. Un
año después del fin de su
tratamiento
quedó
embarazada fácilmente. Y
ahora está embarazada por
tercera vez.
“La decisión de buscar un
embarazo por segunda vez fue
muy difícil. Por mucho que yo
lo ansiara mi oncólogo nos
decía que era una decisión
muy grave. Porque si, Dios no
lo permitiera, mi cáncer
retornaba,
yo
había
conversado seriamente con mi
esposo si él estaría dispuesto a
ser un padre, solo, con dos o
tres hijos. Y decidimos que
valía la pena. No quiero vivir
como
si
estuviese
muriéndome”,
señala
Tushman.
Las terapias más nuevas con
hormonas pueden afectar aún
más la fertilidad en algunas
mujeres. Estos compuestos a
menudo se administran por
períodos más prolongados, de
hasta cinco años. Para quedar

embarazadas, las mujeres
deben suspender la terapia con
hormonas durante un período.
“Y eso es algo que yo no
aconsejo a las mujeres que
hagan, porque los beneficios
de la terapia son tan grandes”,
indica Hayes.
Si una mujer queda
embarazada después del
tratamiento por cáncer de
mama esto no parece tener un
efecto sobre su salud o la salud
del bebé.
Los estudios muestran que los
riesgos de defectos de
nacimiento o abortos no son
más altos en una mujer que
haya recibido quimioterapia.
Asimismo no es probable que
el embarazo cause el retorno
del cáncer de mama en una
mujer. Además nunca se ha
encontrado que las trazas de
cáncer de mama que puedan
persistir en el flujo sanguíneo
de una mujer pasen al bebé.

Con respecto al liderazgo, los
presidentes de las instituciones
enfatizaron abiertamente en un

estudiantes hispanos, y
contribuyeron a eliminar las
diferencias que existen con
frecuencia entre los sectores de
asuntos académicos y asuntos
estudiantiles en los recintos

según el reporte, el liderazgo
de las instituciones no sólo
“dedicó atención inusual al

“el desarrollo sustancial del
profesorado y el personal para
informar al profesorado y
personal no hispano acerca de
la cultura de los estudiantes

pueden contribuir al éxito de
los estudiantes hispanos”.

en varias instituciones exitosas
destaca la importancia de una
cultura institucional, que hace
que los estudiantes hispanos se

Qwest Named To Latin Business Magazine’s ‘Corporate Diversity
Honor Roll 2007’ List
Leading Hispanic Publication Recognizes Qwest for Overall Quality of Its Diversity Program
Qwest Communications
International Inc. (NYSE: Q)
has been recognized by Latin
Business magazine, a national,
bimonthly magazine that
celebrates
U.S.
Latino
entrepreneurs
and
professionals, in its fourth
annual “Corporate Diversity
Honor Roll.”
According to Latin Business,
Qwest is among the top 16
companies that they surveyed
that increasingly recognize the
positive benefits of corporate
diversity. The publication
indicates that the criteria for
inclusion on the “Corporate
Diversity Honor Roll” go
beyond minority retention and
marketing initiatives and
minority representation as a
percentage of employees. Latin
Business looks for companies
that demonstrate a proactive
approach to overall diversity,
an above-average level of
understanding
of
the
importance of diversity, wellexecuted diversity initiatives
and effective communication
of diversity efforts.
“At Latin Business, we take
much more into account than
just the numbers when
evaluating companies for
inclusion on the ‘Corporate
Diversity Honor Roll,’” said
Dave Howard, managing
editor of Latin Business
magazine. “It is not simply a
case of who has the most
Hispanics or other minorities
on the payroll - we look at the
overall quality of a company’s
diversity program.”
Qwest is committed to
maintaining diversity in its
workforce and attracting
talented Hispanic employees.
The company has a director of
diversity committed to
developing and executing its
strategic diversity plan. It also
offers excellent training,
education and community
volunteerism opportunities for
Hispanic employees. The
Qwest Hispanic employee
resource group, called
SOMOS, provides a unique
cultural perspective to Qwest
leadership
on
various
business-related issues that are
important to the Hispanic
community. Qwest also
appreciates the ability to
provide significant business
opportunities for diverse
suppliers. In 2006, more than
12.3 percent of Qwest’s
suppliers were minority-,
woman- and disabled veteranowned
businesses
(MWDVBE).
“Embracing diversity and
creating a culture of inclusion
makes Qwest a better
company,” said Teresa Taylor,
executive vice president and
chief human resources officer
at Qwest. “Diversity is
fundamental to every aspect of
our business and Qwest is very
proud to be recognized for a
fourth year on the Latin
Business ‘Corporate Diversity
Honor Roll.’” To learn more

In April, CSU-Pueblo
symbolically made the switch
to renewable energy when it
dedicated
new
solar
photovoltaic panels south of
the University’s Technology
Building. The solar panels, two
arrays with a total of 36
modules rated at 6.12 KW, are
located on the south side of
CSU-Pueblo’s Technology
Building, adjacent to the Buell
Communications
Center
(KTSC-TV). An educational
kiosk, adjacent to the solar
panels, provides general
information
on
solar
photovoltaic technology.
The $27,540 check represents
Aquila’s current rebate
structure of $4.50 per watt. The
rebate payment also includes
the purchase of renewable
energy credits. Renewable
energy credits are the
environmental attributes
associated with generation of
electricity from a solar system.
At the check presentation on
Oct. 18, Smart Growth
Advocates President Vickie
Massam said, “This project is
an example of how great things
result from small beginnings
when working with committed
partners. This is an important
cornerstone
for
other
renewable energy projects for
this
campus,
already
underway.”
Kenny Romero, manager of
renewable energy for Aquila,
said the University has
demonstrated leadership
around sustainable and
renewable energy initiatives,
not only with this project but
moving forward with future
projects.
“We’re pleased to partner
with the University and have
big plans with other Aquila
customers over the next few
years to meet Colorado’s
renewable energy standards,”
Romero said.
President Garcia vowed to
help the campus be a leader
among the state’s higher
education community. “This is
the first of many “green”
projects for us as we model the
behavior we want to see the
nation emulating,” Garcia said.

Colorado Springs Philharmonic Orchestra Presents This Season’s
Biggest Orchestral Extravaganza Berlioz’ Symphonie Fantastique
The Colorado Springs
Philharmonic Orchestra led by
Maestro Lawrence Leighton
Smith presents Berlioz’
brilliant and breathtaking
Symphonie Fantastique—a story
of unrequited love, devastating
rejection and the ultimate
escape plus Respighi’s lush
Fountains of Rome and John
Adams’ joyfully exuberant
Short Ride On a Fast Machine on
Saturday, November 17, at 8
p.m. and again on Sunday,

Led by Maestro Smith and

be offering audiences its
customary pre-concert lecture
in Studio Bee one hour before
the performances.
.
Hector Berlioz’ first
symphony,
Symphonie
Fantastique portrays the
composer’s passion for Harriet
Smithson, ignited by his
attendance of Hamlet in 1827 in
which she played Ophelia.
During the three years
between first sighting her
beauty and finally
meeting her in person,
his imagination shaped
the stories of the
Fantastique, suffusing
them with the tension,
charm, and melancholy
of unfulfilled love. You
cannot help but be
immersed into the
story, the transition
from
Romantic
emotionalism of the
first movement to the
sheer horror of the last. The
gruesome power of the 5th
movement is absolutely
breathtaking.
Composed by John Coolidge
Adams, Short Ride in a Fast
Machine is a joyfully exuberant
piece, brilliantly scored for a
large orchestra. The piece has
now become one of the most
frequently requested and
performed
encores
in
American concert-halls.
Fountains of Rome is a 1916
work by the Italian composer
Ottorino Respighi, now
considered part of the Roman
Trilogy of symphonic poems
along with Roman Festivals and
Pines of Rome.
Each of the four movements is
dedicated to one of Rome’s
fountains during different
periods of the day and night.
At first jeered by critics during
its premiere this work has later
become one of the most
eminent examples of the
symphonic poem.
The concert is in tribute to R.

vestirá de mariachi, algo que le
“llena de orgullo” y que le
acerca a la figura de su padre,
el cantante de rancheras
Vicente Fernández, de 67 años.
El artista comentó hoy en
Madrid que a su padre le
agradece, sobre todo, “la
formación” que le dio, sin la
cual “estaría perdido en el
universo”, y añadió también
que Vicente Fernández es el
motor de “todo el cariño” que
siente por sus hijos, que son “la
verdadera fuerza” que le
impulsa.
Fue de la mano de su
progenitor como Alejandro
entró en el mundo de la música
hace tres lustros, un tiempo
sobre el que el cantante
también reflexiona y considera
que, además de aparecer “con
el pelo corto y con más canas”,
ha
“madurado”
y
evolucionado “tanto en lo
personal como en lo
profesional”.
Fernández reconoció el papel
“fundamental” que ha tenido
la inmigración en la difusión
de su música “y para echar a
volar en España”, y se alegró
de que “por fin” sus
compatriotas hayan “vuelto los
ojos hacia España como lugar
para buscar trabajo y una vida
mejor, y no siempre a Estados
Unidos, como era habitual”.
A unas preguntas sobre la
polémica que suscitaron unas
fotos de su compatriota
Paulina Rubio envuelta en la
bandera de México, el cantante
comentó que “para evitar
problemas”, él mismo ha
tenido que “pedir permiso
para utilizarla” y por eso lleva
“un águila distinta” en los
populares trajes charros que
utiliza en sus actuaciones.
Alejandro Fernández, que en
su último disco en directo
compartió algunos de sus
temas con artistas como Malú,
Diego “El Cigala” o la cantante
de La Oreja de Van Gogh,
Amaia Montero, manifestó hoy
su deseo de “poder trabajar”
con Alejandro Sanz.

models for comfort and
amenities. The XLS and
Limited models gain even
more luxury touches for 2008,
starting with a new rich dark
wood grain and chrome trim
interior.
Both the XLS and Limited
models now also offer poweradjustable lumbar for the front
passenger seat. On the
Limited, the rear sunshade
now re-extends when the
driver shifts from Reverse to
Drive.
Contemporary Design and
Comfort
Avalon exudes a powerful
stance, distinguished by a sleek
grille with chrome accented
horizontal bars and subtle
character lines defining a
contemporary profile. The
lower intake valance houses
fog lamps on the Touring, XLS
and Limited models, and the
Touring model also features a
rear spoiler.
Toyota optimized the exterior
design of the Avalon for
minimal
wind
noise.
Numerous small details
contribute to lower cabin noise
and vibration, including
refining the shape of the Apillar and side mirrors and
lowering the position of the
aerodynamic windshield
wipers. In addition, the Avalon
Limited model offers a
specially designed acoustic
windshield.
Side mirrors on the Limited
grade feature in-glass LED
turn signals, and an LED
puddle lamp illuminates the
area along the side of the car
when passengers approach the
vehicle.
The Limited grade also
features side mirror memory.
Touring and Limited grades
come standard with high
intensity discharge (HID)
headlamps with dynamic
automatic
leveling
for
improved visibility, while
reducing glare for oncoming
traffic. Large tail lamps and an
elegantly sculptured trunk
distinguish the Avalon from
the rear, and dual exhaust
outlets add a sporty touch.
Avalon’s elegant exterior is
complemented by its refined
interior. Outstanding fit-andfinish is apparent throughout
the cabin. Amenities for driver
comfort include a tilt and
telescopic steering column and
a center console sliding
armrest. Rear passengers
benefit from a flat rear floor
that provides generous
legroom, and the rear seats
recline up to 10 degrees.

Local students, artists make their
mark on new park;
TOPS celebrates 10 years
On Thursday, October 25, 2007 at 11 a.m., the City will dedicate Prairie Grass Park.
The Prairie Grass Park site was selected as the first park site to partner with the Arts
Commission to incorporate art into the design of the park.
The prairie-themed park includes ants stamped into the concrete, a table that looks
like a spider and benches that have prairie-themed tiles.
In addition to the Arts Commission, the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services
Department worked with students from Sand Creek Elementary School to create the
final park design and art elements.
The 5.0-acre site was purchased and developed through the Trails, Open Space and
Parks (TOPS) program.
Colorado Springs City Council Member Jan Martin is among the dedication’s scheduled
speakers. The event will include a ribbon cutting ceremony, a visit from Seemore the
Eagle, and light refreshments.
Also during this dedication, the TOPS Program will be celebrating its tenth anniversary
of building parks, developing trails and protecting open space throughout our
community. TOPS is the tenth of cent sales tax that was approved by voters in 1997 to
be spent only on parks, trails and open space.
In the past 10 years, TOPS has funded approximately 62 million dollars and leveraged
an additional 33 million dollars in grants, donations and matching funds for 102 trails,
parks and open space projects including Red Rock Canyon open space, 24 neighborhood
parks and over 50 trails projects.
Hundreds of volunteers have given over 15,000 hours of their time to make these
projects happen.

Pregnancy after breast cancer is possible
Once Alyssa Tushman knew
her young son would not grow
up motherless, her next
question was whether he
would be an only child.
Tushman was 27 and a new
mother when she was
diagnosed with stage III breast
cancer.
After aggressive treatment—
including chemotherapy,
radiation therapy, a double
mastectomy
and
reconstructive surgery—
Tushman was happy to learn
that another baby would be
possible. And today, she’s
pregnant with her third child.
Most women are in their 50s
or older and thinking about
grandchildren when they are
diagnosed with breast cancer.
But what about that increasing
number of women in their 20s
and 30s who are diagnosed at
a point when they are dating,
getting married and just
starting their family?
Despite toxic chemotherapy
regimens that can mess with
ovarian function, it is
possible—and safe—for many
women to conceive after breast
cancer treatment, according to
Dr. Daniel F. Hayes, clinical
director of the breast oncology
program at the University of
Michigan Comprehensive
Cancer Center.
“Fertility is something we talk

to patients about. We try to
give them their odds. That
discussion is going to be
specific for each patient,
because it depends how old
she is, whether she should get
chemotherapy, what kind of
chemotherapy, and whether
she cares about maintaining
fertility,” Hayes says. “Most of
us in the field have not been
discouraging women from
becoming pregnant. What we
have learned more are some of
the caveats.”
Several factors will affect
ovarian function after cancer
treatment, including whether a
woman
receives
chemotherapy.
Most chemotherapies do have
an adverse effect on ovarian
function, but a woman’s age
has a lot to do with that, Hayes
says. Younger women have a
much greater chance of
regaining their periods after
treatment than women closer
to menopause.
Tushman’s period returned
about three months after she
finished treatment. She was
diagnosed with breast cancer
just four months after giving
birth to her first son. “I was
terrified my son was going to
grow up without his mother.
That was the worst, scariest
part of the whole thing,” says
Tushman, now 31. A year after
her treatment ended, she easily
got pregnant. Now she’s
pregnant for a third time.
“Getting pregnant for the
second time was a big decision.
As much as I wanted it, we
were told by my oncologists
it’s a big decision. Because if,
God forbid, my cancer comes
back, I had to discuss with my
husband whether he’d be OK
as a single parent with two or
three children. We decided it
was worth it. I don’t want to
live like I’m going to die,”
Tushman says.
For some women, newer
hormone-based therapies can
further affect fertility. These
drugs are often given for
longer periods of time, up to
five years. To become
pregnant, women would have
to stop taking the hormone
therapy for a period of time.
“That’s something I
discourage women from doing
because the benefits of the
therapy are so great,” Hayes
says.
If a woman does become
pregnant after breast cancer
treatment, it does not seem to
have an effect on her health or
the baby’s health. Studies show
the risk of birth defects or
miscarriages is not any higher
in a woman who has had
chemotherapy. Pregnancy also
is not likely to cause a woman’s
breast cancer to return. At the
same time, any traces of breast
cancer that may be in a
woman’s bloodstream have
never been shown to cross into
the baby’s.
Tushman is thrilled with her
decision to have more children
and says she has learned never
to take life for granted.
“My boys are amazing. They
are the light of my life and my
husband’s life. We love every
minute of it, we really do,” she
says.
About breast cancer:
• 180,510 Americans will be
diagnosed with breast cancer
this year.
• 40,910 Americans will die
from breast cancer this year. It
is the third-leading cause of
cancer death for women in the
United States.
• When caught in its earliest
stages, breast cancer can be
cured in 80 percent of women.
• Yearly mammograms are
recommended for all women
older than 50.
• Never ignore a lump or
change in the look or feel of
your breast.

students’ success and helped
bridge the gaps often found
between the academic-affairs
and student-affairs sectors on
campus.
Further, the institutions’
leadership not only “devoted
unusual attention to recruiting
and supporting Hispanic
faculty and staff,” the report
said, leaders also conducted
“substantial faculty and staff
development to educate nonHispanic faculty and staff
about Hispanic students’
culture and how to help
Hispanic students succeed.”
“We are happy to endorse the
publication of AASCU’s
Hispanic Student Success
study. Its intensive focus on a
number
of
successful
institutions underlines the
importance of an institutional
culture that makes Hispanic
students feel at home in the
college environment and that
expects and supports their
academic success.
The study will provide much
food for thought and
institutional conversation
among those committed to
improving
Hispanic
recruitment and graduation
rates,” said Antonio Flores,
president and CEO of the
Hispanic Association of
Colleges and Universities.
Funded by the Lumina
Foundation, the studentsuccess study was conducted
in spring 2007 by AASCU, a
membership organization of
more than 430 public four-year
colleges and universities and
26 state systems of higher
education, and The Education
Trust, an independent nonprofit organization that works
for high academic achievement
for students at all levels of
education.
Using the Trust’s Web
database
of
federal
graduation-rate data, the two
organizations identified 11
AASCU institutions that were
doing better than their peers in
graduating Hispanic students
within six years of their initial
enrollment in college.
Five of the 11 institutions had
maintained high graduation
rates for Hispanic students
over a long period of time, and
the other six had shown
substantial improvements in
Hispanic students’ graduation
rates since 2000.
The campuses included
urban, rural, large, and small
institutions. They were Adams
State College (Colo.); Baruch
College of the City University
of New York; California State
University Chico; California
State University Northridge;
George Mason University
(Va.);
Humboldt
State
University (Calif.); Northern
Arizona University; the State
University of New York, New
Paltz; Texas State University,
San Marcos; the University of
Central Florida, and the
University of Texas, Arlington.

report is available at http://

requires youth offenders to

parole within five years.
“We’re really excited about
this interagency agreement,
because it will be a tremendous
benefit to these youths when
they are reintegrated into the
community,” said Dr. J.D.
Garvin, President of the
College. “Also, this is just the
first of what will be a series of
educational collaborative
efforts that are being planned
between the DOC and PCC.”
Garvin thanked DOC
Executive Director Ari Zavaras
and State Representative
Dorothy Butcher, both of
whom addressed the audience
at Monday’s news conference,
for making the agreement
possible
through
their
leadership and support.
Butcher spoke of the real value
of the new program to youths
when they are released from
the YOS.
“They will have the skills to
get into an apprenticeship
program (with Pueblo firms
needing skilled employees),”
Butcher said. “We will be the
first in our country to say that
we don’t have throwaway
kids. This puts a plan in place
to make them productive
citizens.”
PCC already teaches adult
inmates “behind bars” at DOC
facilities in Fremont County.
