Nautic news spreads to all around the Balearic Islands. The opening of a new office
of Nautic Center in Palma de Mallorca (located at the
Paseo Marítimo), will be reflected in the contents of
this Nautic news 4rth publication. Moreover, this publication offers a new view of visiting Menorca: a stroll
around its gorgeous underwater world, where you will
discover the Posidonia see grass, the sandy bottom
and the caves more than 10 meters below the surface. Readers will also discover the secrets of jigging,
a trendy method of fishing. Passionate photographers

Responde, además, a las necesidades de múltiples
usos: una gran bañera para la pesca o para el crucero y una cómoda distribución. Se trata de un modelo
polivalente con la garantías de robustez y calidad marinera de la gama Antarès, cuya reputación es reconocida mundialmente.
Gracias a la acertada compensación de formas del
casco, en especial, la forma curva de las ventanas

produce a powerful, twin-engine, 8.60-metre cruiser: the Antarès 8.8. The traditional seaworthy behaviour of the Antarès is clearly visible: good
stability at sea, an efficient hull reducing fuel consumption and noise and excellent passage through
the waves.
Furthermore, the Antarès 8.8 answers to different
needs: a spacious cockpit for fishing or cruising and
a comfortable layout. It is an all-purpose design combining strength and seaworthy quality guaranteed
by the worldwide acknowledged reputation of the
Antarès range.
Thanks to the wise balanced hull layout, and especially for the curvature of its lateral windows, the watercraft appears much larger and combines dynamism

handrails and holders with a slight slope toward the
bow offer a more dynamic look.
The design of the hull is a fractioned V, two ribs at each
side parallel to the keel and tunnels for the shafts in
stern, in order to combine features and stability. White
is the standard colour, but it can be ordered with a
blue hull as well.
The navigation position has a folding bench seat
to steer standing up or sitting down. It is fitted out
with two Volvo diesel engines, which can reach a
maximum speed of 25 knots at 4.000 rpm in only 14
seconds. A good cruising speed is established at
3.000 rpm and 18 knots, the point at which the boat
can navigate with a range of 170 miles, allowing important fishing outings or long cruising trips.

en sólo 14 segundos. Una buena velocidad de crucero se puede establecer a 3.000 vueltas y 18 nudos,
momento en que el barco puede navegar unas 170
millas lo que permite emprender importantes salidas
de pesca o largos recorridos de crucero.

U
n paraíso lleno de vida en el que, la calidez
y transparencia de sus aguas facilitan la
inmersión. Sólo prudencia y respeto por el
entorno son requisitos indispensables para sumergirse en el maravilloso mundo submarino.
La isla se encuentra rodeada por extensas praderas
de posidonia
a, base del ecosistema litoral. Entre estas
plantas se encuentran gran cantidad de equinodermos y de ellas se nutren estrellas de mar y numerosos
erizos. En su entorno viven pulpos y sepias, multitud
de peces, carnívoros y omnívoros como salmonetes,
rapallones, escórporas, vacas, doncellas, planchitas,
moritos, bogas..., que se alimentan de crustáceos,
moluscos y gusanos, y centenares de especies veJHWDOHV\HVSRQMDV&RQVXHUWH\SDFLHQFLDVHSXHGH
encontrar, incluso, algún caballito de mar.
En la zona sur se hallan fondos marinos arenosos

The island is surrounded by a vast colony of Posidonia
sea grass, which is the floor of the coastal ecosystem.
Starfish and sea urchins feed on these plants and
among them are a great many echinoderms. In the
surroundings, live octopus, cuttlefish and numerous
carnivorous and omnivorous fish, such as red mullets, brown sea scorpions, painted comber, rainbow
wrasses, wrasse tord, damsel fish and bogues which
feed on crustaceans, molluscs, worms and thousands
of vegetable species and sponges. With a bit of luck
and patience you can also see some sea horses!
The bottom of the sea in the south is sandy and has

de arena, estrellas de mar, ortigas y moluscos.
La zona norte, castigada por los embates de fuertes
temporales, es rocosa, irregular, formada por losas y
areniscas en cuyo fondo se encuentra la mayor diversidad de organismos de la isla. Sus altos acantilados
se hunden en bellas paredes submarinas de hasta
35 metros de profundidad. En las zonas rocosas, a
partir de los 20 y hasta los 200 metros de profundidad, existe una comunidad denominada coralígena,
comparable en belleza con los famosos fondos del
Caribe u otras zonas tropicales. En sus partes más

deepens gradually. In this area there is a great range
of blue fish which live semi buried, such as pearly
razorfish (raors), sea-spiders, stingrays, squids, cuttlefish and other cephalopods. Worms of different
species, clams, single-celled seaweeds, sand seaurchins, starfish, nettles and molluscs live together
around the beaches.
The north, battered by the hard storms and winds, is
rocky and irregular. The coast is composed of slabs
and sandstones and the bottom of the sea here has
the biggest variety of organisms on the island. The
high cliffs sink into the sea as beautiful underwater
walls up to 35 metres deep. The rocky areas, from
20 to 200 metres deep, house the coralliferous community, whose beauty is comparable to the famous
bottoms of the Caribbean and other tropical regions.
Organisms adapted to light with lively colours and
some kinds of seaweed live on the surface. Red coral
shapes this community, together with violet gorgoni-

El litoral menorquín también alberga en sus entrañas
numerosos pecios, restos de embarcaciones que
naufragaron en sus costas. La historia de Menorca

Una decena de centros de submarinismo, anclados

desde cursos de iniciación al buceo, de perfeccionamiento o de biología marina, hasta excursiones a fondos rocosos, praderas de posidonia, visitas a pecios,

an, seaweed, crustaceous such as lobsters, sponges,
molluscs and worms and numerous fish species such
as groupers, common two-banded seabreams, and
many more.
The caves, more than 10 metres below the surface,
are another appeal of the bottom of the sea of Menorca, because of the marvellous forms of the rocks cut
by the sea currents. The surroundings are full of filtering organisms such as the gorgonian and sponges
and a great variety of fish (groupers, octopus, moray
eels). Carlos Minguell, underwater photography world
champion, has established the caves of Menorca as
one of his favourite photographic destinations.
There are many shipwrecks of boats sunk off the
coast of Menorca. The history of the island is written
under the sea, where shipwrecks dating from the 4th
– 3rd centuries B.C. up through the very 21st century
can be explored. The archaeological map of Menorca
gathers almost 200 sites, treasures of human history.
About ten scuba-diving centres throughout the island offer courses of all levels of diving and marine
biology. They also offer tours of the rocky bottoms, the
colony of Posidonia, visits to shipwrecks, caves and
underwater rock shelters. Diving in different places off
the coast allows for the observation of the undersea
paradise that embraces the island of Menorca.

se llenan año tras año de las típicas abarcas, unas sandalias de cuero con suelas de neumático reciclado que se ven por todas partes en sus más
variadas versiones.
La familia Riudavets, desde hace décadas, forma
parte de la industria del calzado de la isla, especialmente ligada a la abarca. Actualmente en su tercera
generación, tres hermanos, José Luis, Amalio y MarJDFRQWLQ~DQHOWUDEDMRHQHOQHJRFLRFRPHQ]DGRSRU
su abuelo en los años 20. José Riudavets, se trasladó
del campo al pueblo y durante años se dedicó a producir para amistades y vecinos este tipo de calzado

The Riudavets family, for many decades, has been
part of the shoe making industry on the island, especially related to the avarca. Nowadays, the third generation (made up of three siblings, José Luis, Amalio
and Marga) continues the job started by their grandfather in the twenties. José Riudavets moved from the
country to the town and for years produced this kind of
shoes for friends and neighbours. It was in the sixties
when he decided to manufacture larger quantities and
to distribute this footwear all over the island
and even to the other
islands and Catalonia. Later on, in the
nineties, other factories entered the
avarca market, so
Riudavets registered the brand in
order to guarantee
its authenticity and
quality. The current
aim of Riudavets is,
without a doubt, internet sales through

has led Nautic Center to open a new winter
storage and boat maintenance shop.
The facilities were opened last September in the Sant
Lluís Industrial Zone (Polígono Industrial). They take
up an area of 2.700 square metres among a 6.000
square metres plot. The shop has the capacity to
house about 25 boats up to 18 metres length in order
to maintain them perfectly all the year round and to
certify shelter and protection the low season months.

The first of the islands agricultural establishments
opened between 1993 and 1994. Bini-Atram, BiniSaid and Son Triay Nou initiated a project that’s main
objective was to diversify the islands offer to tourists
with higher quality formulas and at the same time to
secure feasibility and maintenance of its farms and
countryside. Enjoyment of nature and conservation of
the environment are, therefore, the two main values of
this offer.
The possibility to offer service in the countryside has
enabled most rural hotels in the task of restoration of
what were once stately homes and are now tourist accommodation. These stately homes can be considered part of an important historical heritage and now
visitors have the opportunity to spend there holidays
away from the busy, usually overcrowded tourist resorts and enjoy the pleasure of awaking with magnificent views across the island’s countryside and even
in some cases, of the sea in the distance.
Agricultural tourism is becoming more and more
popular and appreciated by visitors. The fantastic results obtained the last seasons in this sector are proof
of this. For example, during the month of July 2006,
occupation in Menorca’s rural hotels was superior to
that of the rest of the Balearic Islands and according to data from INE (National Institute of Statistics)
in September occupation levels in this particular kind
of accommodation made Menorca the second most
popular destination in the whole of Spain for agricultural tourism.

- How did you manage when taking over
at Menorquín Yachts? It must have been a
significant change.
- It was a challenge. I had no experience at running a
business with over 100 staff, but I did have plenty of
ideas and was eager to put them in to place. I started by making lots of changes, probably due to my
over-eagerness and lack of experience, but with time
I selected only the things that were successful and
that could become easy to follow routines for the staff.
We managed to convert a family business with hand
crafted goods into an industry with a three times bigger production level. Within this period and according
to a five year strategic plan, we went from invoicing 8
to 24 mm euros, a fantastic improvement.

- In 2004 we received offers from various investors
who wanted to purchase Menorquín Yachts, and we
decided that if the offer was satisfactory we would
accept it. The sale process of our family business
finalised in May 2005. This May coming up it will be
three years since Menorquín Yachts was sold and
now I have much more time to practise sailing.

La familia Montañés es la propietaria de Subaida, que
en su momento fundó “El Caserío”, una de las marcas
que popularizó el queso en porciones y que fue adquirida, el año 1992, por la empresa Kraft. La nueva
generación de la familia Montañés decidió dedicar la
ÀQFDDODSURGXFFLyQGHTXHVRDOXVRWUDGLFLRQDO(O
actual director de Subaida, Pedro Montañés Albertí, ha sabido adoptar las nuevas tecnologías para la
elaboración de sus quesos sin apartarse del sistema
ancestral, conservando la esencia de los quesos.
Semi curado, curado y curado selección Pedro Montañés, son los tres tipos de queso que ofrece Subaida
a los consumidores más exigentes y cuya diferencia
estriba en el tiempo en que permanecen “curándose”
en bodega, puesto que la materia prima y el proceso
de elaboración son idénticos para todos.
De las máquinas de ordeñar, la leche obtenida pasa
directamente a la quesería, nave climatizada y con
la máxima protección higiénica en la que comienza
la elaboración artesanal. A la leche se le añade el

Mercadal municipal area, Subaida is a estate
(“lloc” in Minorcan), that shelters a farming and
stockbreeding explotation. The Montañés family is
the owner of Subaida, who created the “El Caserío”,
a brand which made cheese in portions and was
purchased, in 1992, by the Kraft company. The new
generation of the Montañés family decided to devote
the estate to traditional cheese-making. The present
managing director of Subaida, Pedro Montañés, has
introduced new technologies in the cheese-making
process. However, has not forgotten the ancient system, preserving the essence of the cheeses.
Subaida offers three types of cheeses to the most
demanding consumers: medium-mature, mature and
Pedro Montañés mature selection. The difference
lies in the amount of time that are kept “aging” in the
cheese cave, given that they are all made with the
same process and raw materials.
The milk goes directly from the milking machines to
the dairy –air-conditioned premises characterized by
high hygiene standards- where the traditional manufacturing proces begins. To the milk rennet is added
to make it curdle.
The precise quantity is extracted for de elaboration
of a piece, introducing the curd in a linen of thin cotton called “fogasser” so the remaining whey can
drain out. Meanwhile, the assistants moud it with their
hands into the square shape so typical of Mahonés
cheeses.

and “carn i xulla”, in addition to honey and jam. The

en segundo plano. La pesca se ha convertido en una actividad de ocio tal y como ha ocurrido
con la caza y ha llegado a considerarse un deporte.
Son muchas y variadas las técnicas que se usan para

T
he practice of catching fish for human intake
has been pushed into the background for a long
time now. Fishing has turned out to be a leisure
practice as it has happened with hunting and even considered a sport. There are many different techniques
used for these purposes and most of them come from
traditional activities of old maritime cultures.
Jigging is one of these techniques that have currently
become very popular, although its ancient origins
started many years ago in Japan where it was already
traditionally practised. It is also called vertical fishing.
It is mainly based on using lead lures that are dropped
from the boat until they reach the bottom. This bottom can be variable although it is mainly practised in
depths from 80 up to 820 feet and in general on different areas: rocks, ledges… These places usually offer
abundant food and therefore the fish catching ability
is higher.
This technique changes depending on fishing latitudes
and specimens, but in all
cases having good equipment
is essential. Catches can be
considerably big, therefore a
resistant rod will be necessary,
from 8 to 13 feet long to be able
to fish comfortably within the
reduced space of the boat. On
the other hand, a high capacity reel and adjustable brake
mechanism with high guarantee and a line with no elasticity
-either braided or single- will
be essential.
As for the jig or lure, it can have
different shapes and colours
with a main objective: to attract
the attention of the catch. It can
be made of lead or any other

Jigging involves using lead lures
sink easier, usually ranging from 2 to 14 ounces. Regarding the variable weight of the lure, this depends
directly on the depth where we are going to fish. In
general, the jig’s weight in grams must double the
meters of depth; therefore, if the bottom is 50 meters
deep it would be advisable to have a 100 grams jig.
Once you have the suitable equipment it is time to
start fishing. The lure will have to be furnished with
one or two hooks (occasionally three) and then let it
drop freely from the boat until it reaches the bottom. At
this stage, the fisherman must give the line little pulls,
moving up and down in some type of pattern provoking the vertical movement of the jig. This motion will
have to be repeated as many times as necessary until
the prey’s attention is attracted. Hence, it is usual to
keep trying different twitch patterns to the line.
Once the lure has seduced the prey, all attention will
be paid on it and the brake will have to be adjusted pulling up the prey to the surface with the help
of the reed and the rod. The jigging has become an
unprecedented success, the reason why lately many
different accessories have been designed and commercialized specifically for the practice of jig fishing.

ast April, Nautic Center took part in two important nautical fairs: XVII Mostra Nàutica in Ciutadella and XXV Salón Náutico Internacional in
Palma. The first boat show has had 46 stands among
an 8.000 square metres area. Moreover, leisure sea
activities enterprises and non-profit marine organizations, such as Amics de la Mar, have taken part of this
boat show.
Nautic Center has also been part of the XXV Salón
Náutico Internacional in Palma until May 4th by presenting a floating stand with more than 300 boats
up to 35 metres long. 680 enterprises representing
about 3.800 different brands have exhibited more
than 1.000 boats of any kind. Nautic Center has presented the brand Riviera, which has recently added
to its boat range to exclusively distribute it throughout
the Balearic Islands, and has also presented 3 new
Menorquin Yachts boat models.
