27th Sunday Ordinary Time ~ The questions was asked of Jesus: “Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife? In Jesus’
answer the Word of God gets most interesting. Jesus replied: “What did Moses command you?” They answered that Moses
permitted divorce. Jesus gave a commentary stating that it was because of the hardness of their hearts that Moses allowed
divorce. But then he did what he always did best. He spoke the highest ideal, the most challenging call, and the truth that he
always gave - because he knew the peace and wholeness that truth would provide. In this case he stated that God’s intention in marriage
was and is that two become one. God’s desire is for love and commitment to reach an all time high in marriage. God’s ideal is that two
would love so deeply that it would be unspeakable and nearly impossible to divide or separate them. What could be more compelling or
more consoling than to know that God desires for a man and woman, in marriage, to experience oneness, wholeness, completeness with
one another – and all without ever loosing one’s own identity or uniqueness. If this is so, then perhaps this is why it is unwise to ‘move in’
with one another, or begin sharing the marital intimacies with one another, or rush the marital commitments until two people have come
to share such a love and truly believe that they desire and are capable of growing it forever. The proof is in the love, not in the ceremony
or document. Those confirm what IS! This too, perhaps, is why there is so much controversy around the issue of gay marriage. From the
point of view of many people of faith, they point precisely to this passage of Genesis to proclaim that it is clearly God’s intention that
marriage belongs only to men and women. The response from those in support of gay marriage would flow just as strongly out of the
gospel passage today. If Jesus would speak so highly of the love of marriage: who wouldn’t want this? This is exactly why the fight is so
intense. Gay men and women want to share the same ideal, challenge, call and commitment – they believe in the same truth and in the
same love. They believe they shouldn’t be prevented from sharing this. Add to this question the historical reality that continues to this
day and certainly was present in the time of Jesus. It existed among some Jews historically and certainly in the lives of their neighbors –
polygamy. Some men had many wives. How did or could this ideal of Jesus ever be realized between one man and a group of women?
Think! Ponder! Question! Open mind and heart! Listen! Probe! It is precisely such realities that will eventually show who we are. Are we
really people of the Kingdom? Listening like a little child to God’s Word, to Jesus – is listening with total trust, with openness of heart,
soul and mind. Listening to Jesus and to God’s Word can lead us in many directions and to many places. Creating more laws and
condemnations AFTER the fact – that is, after a marriage has disintegrated and died is not what is needed. Perhaps more work and
ministry like that of Marriage Encounter is what is needed. To support, teach, love, guide, offer healing and understanding to those called
to such an ideal is the real work of every Christian and the real work of the Church.

OCTOBER — RESPECT LIFE MONTH
Today, October 4th, “Respect Life Sunday”, our
nation’s Catholics are called to renew their personal
commitment to defend ALL human life. Many
Catholics understand this being only to refer to
Abortion and the Pro-Life movement. But the Church expresses
the belief that ALL human life is sacred ‘from the womb to the
tomb’. Every aspect of human life is to be respected and
protected. With that in mind, the United States Conference of
Catholic Bishops puts forth a worthy list of concerns in its ProLife activities and invites all Catholics to share their concerns
over: Abortion - Post Abortion Healing - Assisted Suicide Conscience Protection - Contraception - Euthanasia - Stem Cell
Research - IVF/Reproductive Technology - The Death Penalty.
Every Catholic should become as informed as possible in
understanding these issues and in forming their conscience.

27o Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario ~ Las preguntas formuladas a Jesús: "¿Le es lícito a un hombre
divorciarse de su esposa?”. En la respuesta de Jesús la Palabra de Dios se pone muy interesante. Jesús le
respondió: "¿Qué les prescribió Moisés?" Respondieron que Moisés les permitió el divorcio. Jesús hizo un
comentario diciendo que fue debido a la dureza de sus corazones que Moisés les permitió el divorcio. Pero luego
hizo lo que siempre hacía mejor. Expresó el más alto ideal, el llamado más difícil, y la verdad que siempre expresó, porque conocía
la paz y la plenitud que la verdad proporciona. Afirmó que la intención de Dios en el matrimonio era y es que dos fuesen uno. El
deseo de Dios es que el amor y el compromiso lleguen a lo más alto en el matrimonio. El ideal de Dios es que cuando dos se aman
profundamente sería inefable y casi imposible dividirlos o separarlos. ¿Qué podría ser más convincente o más consolador que saber
lo que Dios desea para un hombre y una mujer en el matrimonio? que experimenten la unidad, la plenitud, la integridad mutual, y
todo sin perder la propia identidad o singularidad. Siendo así, entonces no es prudente que ‘vivan juntos’ o que comiencen a
compartir las intimidades matrimoniales entre sí, o apresurarar los compromisos maritales hasta que las dos personas hayan llegado
a compartir tal amor y verdaderamente crean en el deseo y la capacidad de hacerlo crecer para siempre. La prueba está en el amor
y no tanto en la ceremonia o el documento. Esto confirma lo que es! Por eso existe tanta controversia en torno a la cuestión del
matrimonio gay. Desde el punto de vista de las personas de fe, apuntan precisamente a este pasaje del Génesis que proclama que la
intención clara de Dios es que el matrimonio pertenece sólo a los hombres y mujeres. La respuesta de los que están a favor del
matrimonio gay señalan el pasaje del Evangelio de hoy. Si Jesús hablaba tan bien del amor del matrimonio, quién no querría esto?
Ese es exactamente el motivo porque la lucha es tan intensa. Las personas gay alegan querer compartir el mismo ideal, el desafío, el
llamado y el compromiso, creen en la misma verdad y en el mismo amor, creen que no se les debe impedir compartir esto.
Sumemos a esta pregunta la realidad histórica que continúa hasta nuestros días y seguramente estaba presente en el tiempo de
Jesús. Algo que existió históricamente entre algunos Judios y desde luego entre sus vecinos; la poligamia. Algunos hombres tuvieron
muchas mujeres. ¿Cómo podría ser este el ideal de Jesús a realizarse entre un hombre y un grupo de mujeres? Piensa! Reflexiona!
Pregunta! Abre la mente y el corazón! ¡Escucha! Prueba! Este tipo de realidades muestra lo que que eventualmente somos. ¿Somos
realmente el pueblo del Reino? Escuchar como un niño pequeño la Palabra de Dios, a Jesús, es escuchar con total confianza, con
apertura de corazón, alma y mente. Escuchar a Jesús y la Palabra de Dios nos puede llevar en muchas direcciones y en muchos
lugares. Crear más leyes y condenas después de que un matrimonio se ha desintegrado no es lo que se necesita. Probablemente
necesitemos más trabajo y ministerios como el Encuentro Matrimonial. Para apoyar, enseñar, amar, guiar, ofrecer sanación y
comprensión a los llamados a tal ideal que es el trabajo real de todo Cristiano y el verdadero trabajo de la Iglesia.

Did you know that when Miguel Jose Serra was fifteen, he
was sent to Palma to continue his studies? There he worked
hard and lived the life of a Franciscan friar. After two years he
joined the order. He took the priestly name of Junípero. He
named himself after a friend of St. Francis of Assisi. The original
Junípero was a man known as "the clown of God."
¿Sabías que cuando Miguel José Serra tenía quince años, fue
enviado a Palma para continuar sus estudios? Allí trabajó duro y
vivió la vida de un fraile franciscano. Después de dos años se
