School Office: (805) 648-6836 Weekly Reflection Reflexión Semanal The Bread of Life Pan de Vida The imagery of bread dominates the readings and prayers today. Bread is considered the staff of life – the basic staple of existence. The reading from Exodus records the grumbling of the hungry Israelites as they wandered in the desert. They complained to Moses that they did not have this basic essential and thought they should have remained in captivity rather than starve. Jesus references this episode in today’s gospel when he attempts to awaken the people to the realization that he is not speaking about temporal bread. Jesus says,” Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.” When the people press and ask for this eternal bread, Jesus tells them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.” Jesus is drawing the people closer to a new understanding of what they truly need. Yet, they would not understand the truth that Jesus was preaching, and Saint Paul speaks of in his letter to the Ephesians years later when he tells the community to “put away the old self of your former way of life« and be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and put on the new self, created in God’s way in righteousness and holiness of truth.” Jesus had yet to be crucified and rise from the dead before this truth would become wholly manifest. As we meditate on these readings we joyfully thank God for the gift of Jesus, the bread of life, and pray, “O Lord, in your never-failing care, make us worthy of eternal redemption” (Prayer After Communion). Liturgical Ministries Eucharistic Ministers to Homebound, Hospital and Convalescents Spirituality & Fellowship Our Lady of the Assumption is in need of Eucharistic ministers for the homebound, the Hospitals, and Health Care Facilities (Convalescent and rehab facilities). Our goal is to have enough Eucharistic ministers (EMs) to meet the request for communion for those who are unable to attend mass because of health issues, and administer communion daily to the Ventura County Medical Center, Community Memorial Hospital and to our local care facilities weekly. Eucharist ministering to the Hospitals is an extension of the daily mass. The Eucharistic minister (EM) is asked to attend mass on the day they are scheduled to administer communion at the hospital. The Hospital provides a list of patients that are Catholic for the EM to visit and the EM checks with the patient to see if they are disposed to receiving communion. Since some patients are not able to receive communion for various reasons the EM may pray with them and can be the conduit to having them visited by a priest. Each Hospital will train the EM in its protocols and safety when administering in their facility. Our Lady of the Assumption ministers will walk with you on the how-to part of administering communion and the church’s expectations in administering communion. We will have an information night and church training on Tuesday August 18th 6:30 pm in the Church. Please contact Dn Mike Burns at (805) 642-7966 ext. 145 or [email protected] if you have any questions before the meeting. Gomez I would like to share with you two announcements made by the Holy See this week of great importance to our Archdiocese. First, Pope Francis has accepted the retirement of Bishop Gerald Wilkerson, Auxiliary Bishop for the San Fernando Pastoral Region, upon reaching the retirement age for bishops, which is 75 years old. Bishop Wilkerson has been serving the Archdiocese of Los Angeles as a priest for 50 years, and as a bishop since 1998. He has fulfilled his ministry with zeal and dedication, and we are very grateful for the many things he has done for the people of God in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. We are also grateful because we know that even in his retirement, his health and energy will allow him to continue his ministry among us. The Holy Father has also named Msgr. Joseph V. Brennan and Msgr. David O’Connell from our Archdiocese along with Father Robert Barron from the Archdiocese of Chicago as auxiliary bishops of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. It is with great joy that we welcome the announcement of our three new auxiliary bishops. I believe each of them will help us in our mission here in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles — the beautiful mission we have of sharing the love of God and the message of Jesus Christ and promoting human dignity and mercy and justice in our society. The Archdiocese has created a special webpage with information on the announcement of our new auxiliary bishops, including the video of the presentation of the bishops -elect, their statements and special articles from The Tidings. I invite you to visit this page at http:// archla.org/20150721. Please join me in praying for them. Have You Remembered your Parish or School in your WILL or TRUST?
