Fall 2013 Philanthropy Matters New Normal: The Future of Care Has Arrived On Nov. 9, Nikki and Tim Veilleux of Waterville welcomed twins, Hannah and Samuel, into their family. Births are always joyous occasions, but these births were especially remarkable because Hannah and Samuel were the first babies born at the newly opened Alfond Center for Health. Seeing our world through this family’s eyes gives us valuable perspective on just how much this hospital matters. Nikki, who was due to deliver in five weeks, came to the Alfond Center for Health for a check-up, not for the surprise arrival of her beloved babies that very afternoon! Just a day earlier, Inside 2 Healthy Living Resource Center 3 Thayer Center for Health 4 Dedication Weekend 6 President’s Circle 7 Grant Projects for FY 13 8 Walk for Hope 9 Missouri - Maine Compromise 10 Community Connections 12 Capital Campaign Gifts 16 Annual Campaign Gifts Nikki, Samuel, Hannah and family would have been transported to Portland. The ACH’s Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), a service not available at either Thayer or the former Augusta MaineGeneral campus, provides specialized care for babies born premature after 34 weeks. Because of this enhanced capacity, Nikki was able to stay close to home and her 7-year-old son Isaiah, while getting the care she needed for herself and her eager-to-arrive twins. The Veilleux family is a perfect example of why we built the Alfond Center for Health and the gift we’ve given future generations—the health care “norm” for Hannah and Samuel will be defined by this building and the resources available in it. This project has been the challenge of our lifetime and it took our entire community working together to make it happen. The Harold Alfond Foundation set the stage with an unprecedented commitment of $35 million in 2010. That commitment included a challenge to match up to $10 million in contributions made before Dec. 31, 2016. In the three years since the announcement of the Foundation’s commitment, our community has responded overwhelmingly with more than $12 million in gifts and pledges from over 5,500 people. Many of you stepped up to support this capital campaign with the largest contribution of your lifetime. Once these pledges are paid, we will have succeeded in meeting the Alfond Challenge. Every generation strives to make the world a better place for those that follow. With this new hospital, that’s exactly what we have achieved. The work we are doing to transform health care here will make life better for Hannah and At the dedication ceremony on Samuel’s generation and, at the Sept. 28, Greg Powell announced same time, for ours, too. that the Harold Alfond Foundation Continued on next page New Normal continued would give an additional $2 million to provide bonuses for MaineGeneral employees in recognition of their hard work in delivering this massive project on budget and ahead of schedule and in successfully transitioning into the new hospital. With this latest act of generosity, our collective philanthropic contribution to this once-in-alifetime project reached an awe-inspiring $49 million! Our journey on the road of transformation continues over the next year with a $16 million renovation of the Thayer Center for Health to create the largest outpatient center in Maine. Our goal for Thayer is to better serve our Waterville area patients and families with a convenient onestop resource for primary and specialty care, day surgery and extensive diagnostics. It is not often in life that you can say you did something that changed thousands of lives. But that is just what you did when you said yes to this campaign and this hospital — when you said yes to caring for one another and creating a new normal for those to come. With thanks, Lisa Hallee Vice President for Philanthropy MaineGeneral’s NEW Healthy Living Resource Center Founded by the Peter Alfond Foundation We are proud to announce that the Peter Alfond Foundation has made an extremely generous gift to MaineGeneral to establish the Healthy Living Resource Center (HLRC). The HLRC will offer an integrated mind, body, heart approach to health that focuses on supporting lifestyle changes that reduce and eliminate chronic health conditions and support healthy living and healing. By offering educational programs and resources that focus on healthy eating and cooking, physical movement, stress management, and mindful living, the HLRC will provide tools to transform lives and create positive, lasting change for our patients, their families, our employees and our community. MaineGeneral will be one of the few hospitals in the US to have such a comprehensive program. www.give.mainegeneral.org In Peter’s own words: “Wellness and healthy living have been my lifelong passion. My parents were devoted to learning about prevention and wellness long before it became mainstream. They introduced me to places like Canyon Ranch 35 years ago. Due to my own challenges and an innate curiosity, I have made it my life’s work to share the knowledge and understanding I have gained about how good nutrition, stress management and exercise can help prevent disease. I am thrilled to work with MaineGeneral to bring these important ideas and healthy lifestyle skills to the people of central Maine.” Many of the HLRC’s programs will be held at the Prescott Education Pavilion at the Alfond Center for Health, including healthy cooking classes in our new teaching kitchen, as well as at other locations throughout the community. As we prepare for an April 2014 launch of the HLRC, we welcome your input. Please complete our survey at www.surveymonkey.com/s/HLRC or contact Joy Osterhout, program leader at 861-5255 or [email protected]. 2 Thayer Center for Health MORE of the SAME — Great Services! Renovations to Thayer began Nov. 10, proving we’re just as excited about the future of care in Waterville as we are about our new home for inpatient care in north Augusta. When all is said and done, Thayer will be a comprehensive outpatient center focused on providing the same great services residents have always enjoyed in an enhanced, convenient, patient- and family-centered environment. With a little TLC to keep it relevant in today’s evolving health care climate, the Thayer Center for Health will remain a vibrant medical hub in Waterville and will thrive in future years. Our $16 million investment in Thayer will: l Ease patient access by locating many essential services under one roof; l Transform an aging facility to support growing outpatient needs for years to come; l Add physician offices to support one-stop-shopping to meet a wide array of patient needs, which also improves efficiencies for medical and support staff; l Ensure the MaineGeneral brand, representing high-quality patient care, is apparent in the design of the facility. Key changes: l New main entrance on the east side of the building with a canopy and welcome area similar to the one at the Alfond Center for Health in Augusta; l An expanded lobby area with direct elevator access to all floors and services; l Parking lot improvements to ease traffic flow and building access for patients; l New and better signage for ease in way-finding around the Thayer Center for Health. SAME GREAT services (plus a few more for good measure!): l 24/7 Emergency Department l Complete diagnostic testing facilities l Day Surgery l Prevention Center l Healthy Living Resource Center l CarePartners l Maine Dartmouth Family Practice l Workplace Health l Edmund N. Ervin Pediatric Center l Outpatient and Physical Reconfiguring Thayer will allow physician groups and other health care providers to more effectively and efficiently provide outpatient care to those residing in the greater Waterville area. This makeover will directly complement MaineGeneral’s recent inpatient consolidation and contribute to more convenient service and better health care outcomes. Bob Marden www.give.mainegeneral.org 3 Alfond Center for Health: Dedication Weekend Sept. 27-29 Defined by celebration, unseasonably beautiful weather and numerous landmark announcements, the Alfond Center for Health Dedication Weekend was one to be remembered! On the heels of Peter Alfond’s Friday-night announcement of his personal $4 million gift to create the Healthy Living Resource Center (read more on page 2), Mark Johnston shared that our goal had been met — with the generous help of many, we reached $12 million in capital commitments in support of the “new day” in health care in the Kennebec Valley. Saturday, just before the official ribbon cutting, Greg Powell announced the Alfond Foundation’s intention to gift MaineGeneral an additional $2 million which will be used to provide employees year-end bonuses in acknowledgment of their above-andbeyond commitment in preparation for the opening of the new facility and upcoming Thayer renovations. With an estimated 12,000 guests over the course of the weekend, we were humbled by the interest and continued support; we were inspired by your enthusiasm and presence. And all this time we thought we were the ones giving a warm reception! Thank you for your warmth in return and for being remarkable members of the MaineGeneral family. www.give.mainegeneral.org Norm Elvin Norm Elvin attended all three days of Dedication Weekend festivities and was finally outfitted in yellow and recruited as a member of the hosting home team! “Most people will never experience this — it’s even rarer than once-in-a-lifetime. It was amazing to see the diversity of people come through the facility on Sunday. This hospital was built for everybody. I am so proud to be a part of this — what a team effort it has been. It just goes to show that you really can do anything if you have the right players!” 4 Bill Sprague Board Chair Bill Sprague, pictured with daughter Katie, sported a permanent, proud smile during Dedication Weekend. “This weekend symbolized the culmination of a decade-plus of vision and work. To see nearly 12,000 people join us in celebrating during those three days was an incredible, proud moment for our community and the MaineGeneral team. I wouldn’t have missed a minute of it and I’m equally eager to see the building come to life to serve the people who’ve been so supportive in making it possible.” www.give.mainegeneral.org 5 Celebrating 32 years of Presidential Commitment! MaineGeneral's President's Circle honors charitable leadership gifts of $1,000 or more to MaineGeneral's annual fund. Contributions from President's Circle members provide a strong philanthropic foundation on which MaineGeneral can rely in pursuing its mission to enhance, every day, the health of the people in the greater Kennebec Valley. If you would like to join the President's Circle or have not yet made your annual gift to MaineGeneral, please contact our office of Philanthropy at 207.861.8676 or visit give.mainegeneral.org. Benefits include: l Recognition in our annual list of donors in both MaineGeneral’s bi-annual HealthMatters magazine and Philanthropy Matters newsletter; l Invitation to special system briefings; and l Invitation to annual President’s Circle celebration event. Walter Simcock Bill and Kitty Perry “I give because people and families are important to me. If my donation can help an organization that helps them — that’s a good investment! By giving to MaineGeneral, which serves so many, I’m able to help more of those families than I could any other way.” “Kitty and I support MaineGeneral annually because it’s a fantastic asset — the heart of our community and the region at large. While projectbased giving is wonderful and easy to get excited about, it’s important to remember that organizations need our support each and every day to maintain their high standard of operations. That’s why we’re President’s Circle members and have been since 2007.” ES Boulos Company “MGMC’s dedication to providing world-class health care touches all of us daily. E.S. Boulos is proud to have partnered with MaineGeneral throughout the years to help achieve that mission. Our commitment to supporting this essential community organization through annual contributions is important because it serves our neighbors, ensuring we all receive the finest health care services available anywhere. To us, that’s what building community is all about.” www.give.mainegeneral.org 6 Grant Projects for FY 13 Every Gift Helps Annual giving, regardless of the amount, enables us to maintain great care for those in our communities. Celebrating its 10th year, MaineGeneral Health’s annual breast cancer awareness walk, the Walk for Hope, welcomed more than 1,200 dedicated and courageous women, men, family, friends and neighbors. Each year this collective grows and with it grows a spirit of support and shared journey as people come together to care for one another. While 1,200 walkers participated in the day, the giving goes far beyond as thousands put their support behind their family members and friends walking to raise awareness, to beat the odds, to celebrate and to remember. This year, participants and sponsors raised an unprecedented $173,500, far surpassing our $150,000 goal and making this the most successful year on record. Funds raised by the Walk for Hope are invested in breast cancer detection, diagnostic and treatment efforts right here in Kennebec County. MaineGeneral is committed to caring for you. So are your family, friends and neighbors. Our hats are off to you! Thank you for doubling our sunshine, for walking and for hoping. And thank you for a remarkable 10th year, all the years that led to this one and all the years to come. www.give.mainegeneral.org 10 8 Missouri—Maine General Journey It’s 2013 now.
