A report has come to the Chancery Office about a man presenting himself as a priest. Manuel Calderon has been going house to house, passing himself off as a catholic priest, collecting money for doing home weddings, baptisms, healing services, prayers for the sick, etc. He dresses in clerics and brings communion wafers with him. He tells people that he has no connection with the Roman Catholic priesthood, but that he is a catholic priest, stressing the small “c” but explaining that it makes no difference because catholic is catholic. He claims to have had some connection with St. Elizabeth parish in Oakland. Currently he is known to have been active in Berkeley and Oakland. Obviously, he has no authorization or faculties from the Diocese of Oakland Fr. Paul Schmidt Vicar for Priests Diocese of Oakland 510-267-83074 I want to start this note off by asking a question. If I was to mention to you, our Tuesday morning breakfast group, what would that represent to you? I would think most people would assume it is a group of parishioners that get together on Tuesday mornings and have breakfast together, and maybe share a little bit of faith and prayer. The true purpose of this group is to not eat breakfast but to serve breakfast to the homeless in Hayward. A very dedicated group of parishioners here at All Saints feed the homeless of Hayward every Tuesday morning. They have been doing this for close to 20 years. Rain or shine, warm or cold, this dedicated group does not miss a week. We can serve anywhere between 50-100 people a week. On any given night there are approximately 400 homeless people in the streets in Hayward. All of the food that we provide is donated from various stores in our area. We are also able to provide them with a bag lunch. Our students in the school also provide an extra lunch, and some of your children have actually gone and helped with the serving of the breakfast and distribution of the meal. Every week we take 4 7th graders or 8th graders to help us. Please ask your children about this experience. They walk in sometimes a little fearful and perhaps apprehensive, but leave full of joy, knowing that they have done what God has called them to do. They get a real sense of serving others, and that they are ministering to those less fortunate then themselves.
