Altar Rosary Society Mass & Communion March 6, 8:00 am Novena with meeting to follow March 7, 7:00 pm Retreat at Shrine of St Joseph April 28, 2016 A letter from our Pastor My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On Ash Wednesday hundreds of parishioners stopped by our church to receive on their foreheads the sign of the cross made of ashes. Here at Our Lady of Mount Virgin Church, as in most churches, many parishioners who don’t attend church on any other days during the year seem compelled to come forward to receive and wear the ashes as a sign of faithfulness to the Lord. As the ashes are applied on a person’s forehead, the words “Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel” are prayed. What a powerful invitation we receive as the ashes are applied. We are asked to humbly look into our hearts and souls, to recognize our areas of sin, and then to be faithful to God as we turn from our sins. Over the centuries we have, as a faith community become comfortable with many signs and symbols which help us to experience and live our relationship with the Lord in powerful ways. The poured water at baptism, the anointing with chrism at confirmation, the genuflection before the Blessed Sacrament, the Sign of the Cross, the Miraculous Medal, the palm branches and so many others are symbols that help us to live our faith more fully as we consider the intimacy with Jesus that the signs and symbols suggest. In a powerful way, the wearing of ashes on our foreheads reminds us that Jesus suffered and died for a the redemption of our sins; and that we need to confront our shortcomings as we seek to “return to the Lord.” Today’s Gospel verse suggests “Repentance.” “Repent, says the Lord. The Kingdom of God is at hand.” Isn’t this a forceful reminder that our Lenten experience which began recently on Ash Wednesday is far from over, and that we still have much to do as we turn from sin and once again focus on the Gospel of Jesus. In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells the parable about the fig tree that has yet to bear fruit. The owner wants to cut it down because it is not producing, only using precious nutrients. The gardener begs that he be given time to nurture the fig tree as he is hopeful that he can get it to produce. Isn’t Jesus like that gardener who is not ready to give up on any of us---even though so often we neglect to “Make our return to the Lord for all he has given us!” Now is the time for us to “Repent.” Now is the time for us to “be faithful to the Gospel.” We proudly wore the ashes on the outside of our bodies. Now is the time to make those necessary changes within!!! May the ashes of Ash Wednesday become for us more than just and outward sign. Let us, each of us, as we continue our Lenten experience, truly “Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel.” In peace and prayer, Father Pat ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A SPECIAL COLLECTION WILL BE TAKEN ON THE WEEKEND OF MARCH 12/13 TO BENEFIT OUR RETIRED PRIESTS OF THE DIOCESE OF METUCHEN. DIOCESE OF METUCEN Lenten Instructions – 2016 Lent allows each of us to let our Catholic tradition of fasting and abstaining be an important reminder of what it means to suffer or to be without. This liturgical season is a blessed opportunity for us to unite with our brothers and sisters who are hungry, poor, homeless, or living on the fringes of society and to draw near to all those who suffer from illness, affliction, addiction or other serious burden. The following is a reminder of the Lenten instructions to use as a guide as we unite with those who suffer, near and far. So that the Church of Metuchen may be spiritually one in a common observance of Lent, the following days of fast and abstinence are to be observed by all Catholics of the Diocese who enjoy the blessings of good health: 1. The days of fast and abstinence are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. 2. All other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence. 3. From the Evening Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday until the celebration of the Easter Vigil on the evening of Holy Saturday, the Easter fast is suggested so that, with uplifted and welcoming hearts, we may be ready to celebrate the joys of the Resurrection. This ancient tradition, intimately connected with the Rites of Holy W eek and the Order of Christian Initiation of A dults, is encouraged, especially in those places baptizing catechumens at the Easter Vigil. The obligation to fast applies only to Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59. To fast in the Catholic tradition means to limit oneself to one full meal during the day so as to experience hunger. The obligation of abstinence affects all Catholics who have reached the age of 14. Abstinence in the Catholic tradition means to abstain from meat. The obligation of fast and abstinence, as a whole, is a serious obligation. While failure to observe any penitential day in itself may not be considered serious, the failure to observe any penitential days at all, or a substantial number of them without good cause, would be considered a grave matter. Those unable to abstain for a valid reason on any given Friday of Lent are asked to perform some other penitential act, or to abstain on another day. My faithful brothers and sisters, in our fasting and abstaining this Lent, I pray that we each may choose to embrace this small suffering rather than accept it with misery or complaint. For, if we are joyful in our Lenten observances, we will be granted an opportunity to more fully understand the true sacrifice that Jesus Christ made for all humanity by accepting death on the cross in order to gain our eternal salvation. +Most Rev. Paul G. Bootkoski Bishop of Metuchen Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy In Misericordiae V ultus, the Bull of Indiction (or Proclamation) of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy (#17), Pope Francis speaks of the season of Lent in the paragraph below: “The pages of the prophet Isaiah can also be meditated upon concretely during this season of prayer, fasting, and works of charity: “Is not this the fast that I choose: to loosen the bonds of wickedness, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh? Then shall your light break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up speedily; your righteousness shall go before you, the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry, and he will say, here I am. If you take away from the midst of you the yoke, the pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness, if you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday. And the Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy your desire with good things, and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters fail not” (58:6-11).” May we use this Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy to shape our lives to be “Merciful like the Father.” Girl Scout Saturday - March 5, 2016 All OLMV Girl Scouts are invited to attend a Mass in their honor. Box 191 Metuchen, NJ 08840 732/562-1990, ext.
