Queridos amigos del fútbol:
Dear Football Fans,
in den nächsten Wochen dreht sich alles um
die Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft, für die Deutschland Gastgeber sein darf. „Die Welt zu Gast
bei Freunden“ heißt das Motto dieser Wochen
und dies gilt auch ganz besonders für
Walldorf.
En las próximas semanas, todo girará en
torno a la Copa Mundial de Fútbol, de la cual
Alemania será anfitriona. “El mundo es huésped
entre amigos“ es el lema de estas semanas,
especialmente válido para Walldorf.
In the next few weeks, the world’s attention
will be focused on the 2006 FIFA World
CupTM, for which Germany is the host nation.
“A time to make friends“ is the motto of the
weeks ahead and it is one that also applies in
a very special way to Walldorf.
Ich freue mich sehr, dass unsere Stadt am
Fußballgeschehen ganz nah „dran“ ist, denn
wir sind FIFA WM-Quartier für die Nationalelf von Costa Rica. Durch die Initiative engagierter Geschäftsleute unserer Stadt ist es
außerdem gelungen, die Jugendnationalmannschaft U 17 aus Costa Rica nach Walldorf zu
holen.
Ich heiße alle Spieler und Betreuer aus
Costa Rica und die vielen Fußballfans aus
aller Welt im Namen aller Walldorferinnen
und Walldorfer sehr herzlich willkommen.

Me alegra de forma particular que nuestra
ciudad esté tan cerca de los eventos futbolísticos, ya que albergaremos (oficilmente
seleccionados por la FIFA) al Equipo Nacional
de Costa Rica. Gracias a la ayuda comprometida de ciertos funcionarios de nuestra
ciudad, fue posible además traer al Equipo
Juvenil U17 de Costa Rica a Walldorf.
En nombre de los habitantes de Walldorf, doy
la bienvenida a todos los miembros del
Equipo Nacional de Costa Rica, a sus asesores y a los aficionados al fútbol de todo el
mundo. Walldorf se alegra de recibirlos y
hará su estadía lo más agradable posible.

I am very pleased that our town will be very
“close” to the football action, as we have
been selected to host the Costa Rica national
team. As a result of the initiative and determination of some of our town’s businessmen,
we have also been successful in getting Costa
Rica’s Under-17 national team to Walldorf.
On behalf of all Walldorf’s residents, may
I extend a warm welcome to all the players
and coaches from Costa Rica, and the many
football fans from all over the world.
Walldorf is looking forward to meeting

Die „Sele Mayor“ von Costa Rica, wie die Mannschaft auch genannt wird, trainiert im
Waldstadion Walldorf. Der Zutritt zum Training wird über die FIFA geregelt.
Das öffentliche Freundschaftsspiel von Costa Rica gegen eine regionale Auswahl wird im
Hardtwaldstadion Sandhausen ausgetragen. Informationen zum Termin und zu Eintrittskarten
werden rechtzeitig veröffentlicht.
La "Sele Mayor" de Costa Rica, así se denomina el grupo, entrenará en el "Waldstadion
Walldorf". La entrada a dicho entrenamiento será regulada por la FIFA.
El partido amistoso abierto al público contra una selección de jugadores regionales se jugará
en el "Hardtwaldstadion Sandhausen". Las informaciones sobre la fecha para este encuentro
amistoso y la venta de entradas serán publicadas con la debida anticipación.
The "Sele Mayor" from Costa Rica, as the team is known to its fans, will do their training in
the Waldstadion Walldorf. Access to the training sessions is regulated by FIFA.
Costa Rica's friendly game against a select regional team, which is open to the public, will be
played in the Hardtwaldstadion in Sandhausen. Information on the date and entrance tickets will
be published in advance.

Con los autobuses 706 y 708 (cada 30 minutos) desde la "Drehscheibe" (aparcamiento y
parada de autobús en la Iglesia Evangélica en
el centro de Walldorf), podrá Ud. llegar con
facilidad a la estación de trenes WieslochWalldorf.
Desde aquí y sin largas demoras, modernos y
veloces trenes (cada 30 minutos) colegados a los
autobuses lo llevarán a Heidelberg, Mannheim,
Speyer, Bruchsal y Karlsruhe.
Con el autobús número 41 (cada 20 minutos)
llegará al centro de Heidelberg.
Le recomendamos visitar el castillo de
Schwetzingen. El autobús número 710 lo llevará
desde la "Drehscheibe" (frente a la Iglesia
Evangélica) directamente a la estación de trenes de Schwetzingen.
Los billetes podrá conseguirlos en el mismo
autobús, en los expendedores automáticos o
en la tabaquería (estanco) en la calle central
de Walldorf (Hauptstraße, número 3).

No. 706 and 708 city buses travel every 30
minutes from the "hub" (Walldorf's central bus
stop outside the Protestant Church –
"Evangelische Kirche") to the WieslochWalldorf S-Bahn station.
You won't have to wait long for one of the
modern rapid transit trains that will take you
from here to Heidelberg, Mannheim, Speyer,
Bruchsal and Karlsruhe trains leave every 30
minutes.
No. 41 buses run every 20 minutes from the
central railway station in Heidelberg to the old
part of town (the Altstadt) and the famous
Heidelberg Castle.
A visit to the Schwetzingen Palace Gardens is
well worthwhile. The No. 710 bus will take you
from the hub to the station for Schwetzingen.

La casa de Astor
El legendario hijo de la ciudad de Walldorf,
Johann Jakob Astor (1763–1848), partió a
los Estados Unidos a los 16 años siendo hijo
de un carnicero, donde logró fama y fortuna.
Astor donó a la ciudad de Walldorf 50.000
dólares para el orfanato y casa de pobres,
que fue creado en 1854. Hoy, la casa de
Walldorf es una guardería para niños en
edad escolar y también museo, en el cual se
realizan variadas exposiciones.

Der berühmteste Sohn Walldorfs, Johann
Jakob Astor (1763–1848), der das Dorf als
armer Metzgerssohn im Alter von 16 Jahren
verließ, kam in Amerika zu Reichtum und
Ruhm. Er stiftete Walldorf 50.000 Dollar für
ein Armen- und Waisenhaus, das im Jahr
1854 ins Leben gerufen wurde. Heute beherbergt es den städtischen Schülerhort und
ein Heimatmuseum, in dem auch regelmäßig
Sonderaustellungen ihren Platz haben.

Vom Dorf im Wald „Waltdorf“, das 770 in
einer Schenkungsurkunde des Klosters Lorsch
erstmals urkundlich erwähnte wurde, hat sich
Walldorf im Laufe der Jahrhunderte zu einer
Kleinstadt mit besonderem Profil entwickelt.
De aquel pueblecito en el bosque (Wald)
surgió "Waltdorf", que en el 770 fue
nombrado por primera vez en un acta del
Monasterio de Lorsch. En el transcurso de
los siglos, Walldorf se ha transformado en
una pequeña, pero pujante ciudad.
From the first mention of Waltdorf as the
"village in the woods", in an early deed
dating back to 770, which is preserved in
Lorsch Monastery, Walldorf has developed
through the centuries into a small town with
its own special character.
Ya antes del año 770 se habían establecido
aquí algunas poblaciones. Con el tiempo
Walldorf se convirtió en el poblado más al
sur en el Electorado del Palatinado. Luego
pasó a ser escenario de luchas y saqueos
en la Guerra de los Campesinos y de los
Treinta Años. En 1689, en la Guerra de las
Herencias del Palatinado, la ciudad fue totalmente destruída.
En el siglo 19, Walldorf pasó de ser un pueblo de campesinos, orgulloso de sus riquezas naturales ("bosque, trigo, vino, agua y
pradera"), a convertirse en un importante
centro dedicado al comercio.
Sin embargo, el progreso de la ciudad
siguió acrecentándose con los regalos de la
naturaleza: su bosque, el tabaco, el lúpulo y
los espárragos. Hoy, los productos del suelo
ya no son más tan representativos. La principal fuente de ingresos está dada por el
hardware y el software.
El sur de Walldorf ha dejado de ser un
pueblo exclusivamente agricultor.
Actualmente esta ciudad es sede de empresas de alta tecnología, gracias a las cuales
Walldorf goza de fama internacional.
Even before 770 people had settled here,
with Walldorf later becoming the most southern settlement of the Electoral Palatinate
people. It was then ravaged by battles and
plundering soldiers in the Peasants’ Wars
and again in the Thirty Years’ War. And
finally, in 1689, during the Palatinate War of
Succession, it was raised to the ground.
In the 19th century, it went through a process of transformation from a farming village that was proud of its „woodland, wheat,
wine, water and wide pasture“ to an
important commercial centre. Its increasing
prosperity was once again due to the gifts
nature had bestowed upon it: woodland,
tobacco, hops and asparagus. Business
today, however, is no longer in natural commodities, but primarily in hardware and
software. Walldorf South has gone from
farmland to a key location for high-tech
companies that continue to carry the name
of Walldorf throughout the world.
Schon vor 770 hatten hier Menschen gesiedelt, später war Walldorf die südlichste
Siedlung der Kurpfälzer, dann Schauplatz
von Kämpfen und Plünderungen in den
Bauernkriegen und im Dreißigjährigen Krieg.
Im Pfälzischen Erbfolgekrieg wurde es 1689
dem Erdboden gleichgemacht.
Im 19. Jahrhundert wandelte es sich vom
Bauerndorf, das stolz war auf „Wald, Waitz,
Wein, Wasser, Weyd“, zum wichtigen Handelsplatz. Seinen zunehmenden Wohlstand
verdankte es nach wie vor den Geschenken
der Natur: Wald, Tabak, Hopfen und Spargel. Heute werden die Geschäfte nicht mehr
mit Naturalien, sondern überwiegend mit
Hard- und Software gemacht.
Der Walldorfer Süden hat sich vom Ackerland zum Standort für High-Tech-Firmen
entwickelt, die den Namen Walldorf weiterhin in alle Welt tragen.

Der Weißstorch gab den Walldorfern ihren
Spitznamen „die Störch“.
Die Bezeichnung stammt noch aus den
Tagen, als der Storch zum sommerlichen
Dorfbild gehörte und seine Nistplätze auf
den Dächern vieler Walldorfer Häuser
hatte. Nachdem sich die Störche rar gemacht hatten, werden sie nun wieder öfter
auf den Walldorfer Wiesen gesichtet und
sollen wieder angesiedelt werden.

Walldorf el sobrenombre "die Störch" ("los
cigüeños").
La denominación se remonta a aquellos
tiempos en los que la cigüeña formaba
parte del paisaje veraniego de Walldorf, ya
que este ave solía crear sus nidos en los
techos de muchas casas en nuestra ciudad.
Hoy en día, a pesar de que en general se
ven menos cigüeñas, se las encuentra a
menudo en nuestros campos y se procurará
asentarlas en ellos.
The white stork was the origin of the
nickname given to people from Walldorf:
"the storks".
The term goes back to the days when storks
were a common sight in the village during
the summer months and had their nests on
the rooftops of many houses in Walldorf.
Although the storks became something of a
rarity, they have recently been spotted more
frequently in the fields around Walldorf and
attempts are now being made to give them
more permanent homes again.

cierran los miércoles por la tarde.
Durante el campeonato mundial de fútbol, las
tiendas extenderán probablemente sus horarios de apertura.

In Walldorf, you will find almost everything
from A to Z. Friendly services is a byword in
the shops, and if the customer's request cannot
be met, then advice is immediately forthcoming.
There are shopping guides available in our
tourist information centre and addresses of
local tradesmen. Shop opening hours vary.
Generally speaking, shops are open from
Monday to Friday from 9am to 12 noon and
afternoons from 2pm to 6.30pm, Saturdays
from 9am to 1pm. Some shops are closed
Wednesday afternoons.
During the World Cup tournament, shops are
expected to be open longer. Check the tourist
information centre and the local newspapers
for details.
