JOHN DAVIES Cheshiren jaio zen (Ingalaterra), 1946an.
Arte–ikasketak egin zituen Britainia Handiko zenbait
erakundetan, hala nola Manchester College of Art –bertan
ehun–diseinua eta pintura ikasi zituen–, Slade School of
Fine Art edo Gloucestershire College of Art–en (hor
eskulturan espezializatu zen). Hogeita sei urte zituelarik
bere lehenengo erakusketa indibidu ala egin zuen ,
Londresen. Bere sorkuntza–ibilbidean zehar, gero eta
interes handiagoa azaldu zuen giza gorputzaren zenbait
atal lantzeko, hainbat motatako materialak eta euskarriak
erabiliz.
80ko hamarkadan, erakusketa indibidual batzuk egin
zituen Londresko Marlborough Fine Art galerian; bertan,
zirkuaren munduan inspiratutako tamaina ertaineko
eskulturak jarri zituen ikusgai, eta baita marrazkiak eta
brontzezko buruak ere, hainbat formatutan. Daviesek bere
garaian nagusi izan diren moda edo estiloetatik aparte
gauzatu du bere obra. Artistak mendez mende aldatu ez
den interes formal bat bilatzen du figurazioan. Azken
urteotan, erretratu eskultoriko batzuk egin ditu, enkarguz,
eta formatu txikiko serie eskultoriko berriak ere egin ditu.
Orobat, marrazketak ere rol garrantzitsua jokatu du beraren
sorkuntza–ibilbidean, bai adierazpide bezala eta bai
beraren eskulturarentzako ikerketa–bide bezala.
Tailerraren ardatza hauxe izango da: itzala eta beraren
erabilera marrazketan. Daviesentzat: “garrantzitsuena
marrazketa d a, zeren leku oso bat d eskri batzea
ahalbidetzen baitit. Hau ezin egin daiteke eskulturan: ezin
duzu norbait jarri zelai bat zeharkatzen, irudia zelai batean
jarri ezean. Eskulturak eremu bat jartzen du bere inguruan,
nonbait, ikusleak gordetzen duen distantzia bat, zeinetik
begiratzen baitu. Gustukoa dut espazioari edo denborari
b uruzko apunteak eran stea, edota jarduera bati
buruzkoak”.
Eta itzala dela-eta, hauxe dio: “beti gustatu zait irudiek
beren orbitatik ihes egiten duten itzalak izatea: gelatik,
hormatik, eta abar. Irudiak zuzentzea bezalakoa da, edo
drama baten probak egiten dituzten antzezleak bezalakoa”.
JOHN DAVIES nace en Cheshire (Inglaterra) en el año
1946. Realiza estudios de arte en diversas instituciones
de Gran Bretaña como el Manchester College of Art ,
donde estudia diseño textil y pintura, la Slade School of
Fine Art o el Gloucesterhire College of Art, donde se
especializa en escultura. A los veintiséis años realiza su
primera exposición individual en Londres. A lo largo de
su trayectoria creativa va mostrando un creciente interés
por trabajar sobre distintas partes del cuerpo humano en
distintos materiales y soportes.
En los años 80 realiza varias exposiciones individuales
en la Galería Marlborough Fine Art de Londres en las que
expone esculturas de tamaño medio inspiradas en el
mundo circense, dibujos y cabezas de bronce en distintos
formatos. Su obra se encuentra al margen de modas o
es tilos predominantes. El artista busca en la figuración
un interés formal que no ha variado a lo largo de los siglos.
En los últimos años ha realizado varios retratos escultóricos
por encargo y ha desarrollado nuevas series escultóricas
en pequeño formato. Asimismo, el dibujo siempre ha
jugado un papel importate en su trayectoria creativa como
medio de expresión y como medio de investigación para
su escultura.
El taller se centrará en la sombra y su uso en el dibujo.
Para Davies: “lo más importante es el dibujo, ya que puedo
describir un lugar completo. Esto no se puede hacer en
escultura, no puedes colocar a alguien cruzando un
campo, a menos que coloques la figura en un campo. La
escultura parece imponer un área alrededor de ella misma,
una distancia a la que uno se coloca y desde la que mira.
Me gusta añadir apuntes sobre el espacio o el tiempo, o
sobre una actividad”.
JOHN DAVIES was born in Cheshire (England) in 1946.
He studied art in various institutions in Great Britain,
such as Manchester College of Art, where he studied
textile design and painting, Slade School of Fine Art and
Gloucestershire College of Art, where he specialised in
sculpture. At the age of twenty-six he had his first
individual exhibition in London. Over the course of his
creative life his interest has centred increasingly on parts
of the human body in different materials and media.
Y en referencia a la sombra, afirma: “Siempre me ha
gustado el hecho de que las figuras tienen sombras que
se escapan de su órbita, por la habitación, por la pared,
etc. Es como dirigir a las figuras, o como actores que
ensayan un drama”.
In the nineteen eighties he had several solo shows
at the Marlborough Fine Art Gallery in London in which
he exhibited medium-sized sculptures inspired by the
world of the circus, as well as drawings and bronze heads
in d ifferent formats. H is work h as always b een
independent of fashion or prevailing styles, as he has
sought a formal interest in the figure that has not varied
over centuries. In recent years he has made various
commissioned portrait sculptures and has carried out a
series of new small-scale sculptures. Drawing has also
played a key role throughout his creative life as a means
of expression and a means of research for his sculpture.
The workshop is centred on shade and its use in drawing.
For Davies, “the most important thing is drawing, since
I can describe a complete place. This can’t be done in
sculpture, you cannot place someone crossing a field,
unless you actually put the figure in a field. Sculpture
seems to impose an area around itself, a distance where
you place yourself and where you look from. I like to add
notes on space or time, or on an activity”.
And referring to shade, he states, “I’ve always liked
the fact that figures have shadows that fly out of their
orbit, around the room, up the wall, etc. It’s like directing
the figures, or like actors rehearsing a play”.
John Davies has taken part in numerous solo and
group exhibitions. Among the most notable were the
shows held at the Museo de Bellas Artes, Bilbao and the
Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno in 2004–2005. His
work is part of the collections of prestigious institutions
such as the British Council, the Tate Gallery, the Victoria
and Albert Museum, the Tokushima Museum in Japan,
the Beelden aan Zee Museum in The Hague or the
aforementioned Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno
and Museo de Bellas Artes in Bilbao.
John Daviesek erakusketa indibidual eta kolektibo
ugari egin ditu. Azpimarratzekoak dira Bilboko Arte Eder
Museoak eta Valentziako Arte Modernoaren Institutuak
2004–2005 urteetan gauzatutakoak. Beraren obra ospe
handiko erakunde batzuetako bildumen zati da; adibidez:
British Council, Tate Gallery, Victoria and Albert Museum,
Japoniako Tokushima Museum, Hagako Beelden aan Zee
Museoa edo lehen aipatutakoak, hots, Valentziako Arte
Modernoaren Institutua eta Bilboko Arte Eder Museoa.
John Davies ha realizado numerosas exposiciones
indiv iduales y colectivas. D estac an las muestras
desarrolladas por el Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao y
el Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno en los años 2004
–2005. Su obra forma parte de las colecc iones de
prestigiosas instituciones como el British Council, la Tate
Gallery, el Victoria and Albert Museum, el Tokushima
Museum de Japón, el Museo Beelden aan Zee de la Haya
o los anteriormente mencionados Instituto Valenciano
de Arte Moderno y Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao.
