Dear Friends,
It is my pleasure to invite you to our 33nd Annual Religious Education Congress of Our Lady of the Angels Pastoral
Region.
Our congress offers you the opportunity to learn, to educate, to gather, to re-encounter…to live and relish God’s love for
all of us revealed in Jesus Christ. Come and join hundreds of educators of faith (catechists, parochial parish leaders, teachers, priests, religious, volunteers…) who congregate year after year to celebrate faith and life, and to renew their commitment to be a bridge between God and His creation, as we prepare in this beautiful missionary adventure of going out to
bring the beauty of God’s Mercy to our brothers and sisters.
You will have more than 80 workshops in English and Spanish to choose from. I believe it will be a difficult task, given
the diverse group of selected speakers. We will also have a liturgy presided by our own Regional Bishop, who will present
the Excellence in Catechetical Service Award (E.C.S.A.) to selected catechists.
May Mary Queen and Mother of Mercy continue walking with us in our journey of renewal and encounter with Jesus.

Me da mucho gusto invitarles a nuestro trigésimo-segundo Congreso Anual de la Región Pastoral de Nuestra Señora de
Los Ángeles.
Nuestro congreso les ofrece la oportunidad de aprender, de educar, de convivir, de conocer, de encontrar y de
re-encontrar…de vivir y gozar en plenitud el amor de Dios por nosotros revelado en Jesucristo. Vengan y únanse a cientos
de educadores de la fe (catequistas, lideres parroquiales, maestros, sacerdotes, religiosas/os, voluntarios…) que se congregan año tras año para celebrar la fe y la vida y para renovar el compromiso de ser puentes entre Dios y su creación en esta
bella aventura misionera de salir y llevar la belleza de la misericordia de Dios a nuestros hermanos y hermanas.
Tendrán mas de 80 talleres en inglés y español para escoger. Creo que será difícil, por la variedad y selección de los conferencistas. Tendremos también una Liturgia presidida por nuestro Obispo Regional, el cual presentará los premios PESCA
a los catequistas seleccionados.
Que nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, Reina y Madre de la Misericordia, continúe acompañándonos en nuestra jornada de
renovación y de encuentro con Jesús.

Registration Fee: $30 before October 11. All registrations received after October 11, will pay $35 per person.

MESSAGES FROM THE HEART
A song, a story, and a healing...An interactive and music-filled
workshop that allows one to experience the healing power of
telling one's story. This workshop provides tools and techniques
for the catechist to create a sacred healing space that can be embraced by teenagers, young adults, and adults alike.
POPE FRANCIS YEAR OF MERCY: TEACHING AND
PREACHING A MESSAGE OF WELCOME AND COMPASSION
As teachers, parents and preachers the YEAR OF MERCY gives
an opportunity to reflect and teach about our tradition, our experience and expectation of mercy and compassion. In a world that
often we hear God's name as a call to War, a call to judge or discriminate against persons or to see or treat ourselves with self
destructive behavior--Jesus' Beatitudes demands us to imitate the
God of Compassion, of the Immigrant, of the victims of violence
and the incarcerated, of the marginalized and those without
healthcare/food/shelter or work. This is not a political agenda but
the Gospel Agenda that we need to use to measure our own life,
the church life and the public or political world we live in. The
session will be using the Holy Fathers call to a YEAR OF COMPASSION as a lesson/preaching curriculum for the coming year.
Deacon Douglass Johnson of the Los Angeles Archdiocese (Educator/
Writer/Speaker) taught at the elementary, middle and high school levels for over
fifteen years. As an educator, he has developed campus youth and young adult
ministries, facilitated youth gang and delinquency intervention programs and
monitored/counseled at-risk youth. Some of these experiences resulted in the inspiration for his co-authoring with his wife Sheree Brown, the children’s book, ZHAKANAKA, the Word which has now become part of a national anti-bullying campaign. Johnson is a much sought after motivational and spiritual speaker.
Sheree Brown (Singer/Writer/Musician/Producer/Teacher) began her rhythm
and blues and pop recording artist career with Capitol Records, where she wrote
Fr. Christopher Ponnet ordained for Los Angeles Archdiocese in 1983, and played guitar on two albums, "Straight Ahead"and "The Music".She is an awardis Pastor and chaplain at St. Camillus Center for Spiritual Care. He
winning songwriter and co-wrote gospel recording artist Kirk Franklin’s hit single,
also serves as Director of Office of Catholic HIV/AIDS Ministry, Board “Looking For You”, received a “song of the year” Stellar Award nomination, and
of Death Penalty Focus, Pax Christi USA, Angel Interfaith Network,

THE THREE KEYS TO A GREAT MARRIAGE

life and get you to heaven? Being in the midst of the Synod of Bishops on
the Family, there is renewed enthusiasm for addressing the issues of marriage and family. There is much that we as a church can offer to prepare,
strengthen and heal couples. In The Three Keys to A Great Marriage, you
will hear about the tremendous benefits and blessings that can come
through marriage and the key factors that can help create and sustain a
great marriage. Backed by research and inspired by faith, come listen to
the good news about marriage and how this can empower your marriage
preparation programs and marriage ministries.

Suzette Sornborger is Director of Youth Faith Formation at St.
Monica Catholic Community. She graduated from LMU with a BA in
Dance with an emphasis in sacred movement and a MA in Pastoral
Theology. She holds her Master Catechist certification from the Archdiocese and teaches with various teams across Our Lady Angels Pastoral
Region. She has held various positions in Adult Faith Formation and
Stewardship. She currently serves on the Advisory Board of the theology
Department for Graduate students at LMU. She sings in a small local
semi-professional choir called Legacy. They have toured through Austria and Ireland singing both contemporary and classic American
hymns.

Dr. Michael DiPaolo is a clinical psychologist & certified Imago Relationship
Therapist in practice in West Los Angeles. He received his education from the
University of Notre Dame, Columbia University, and the California School of
Professional Psychology. Among his ministry work, he has counseled over 1,000
couples in marriage preparation throughout the archdiocese. He and his wife
Jennie have been married for 16 years and have 3 children.

We are called to be Co-Creators with God. Called to imitate Jesus,
the Master Teacher. This is a workshop of ideas, songs, prayers,
and activities to inspire your creativity as you walk with the children
toward God.
Eileen Fewless volunteered as a young catechist in 1967 at her parish,

LIFE-LONG LEARNING
Life-long learning and a personal commitment to catechesis in your
parish inspires a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and His
Church. This workshop will discuss aspects of personal and communal prayer as it relates to your ministry; ever growing in grace and
sharing the gift of faith for decades to come.
St. Bernardine in Woodland Hills, and has served as the parish DRE for
the past 40 years. As an experienced Parish Catechetical Leader, Eileen
Warren G. Kunkle III is presently a sales representative for William H. Sadliserves the archdiocese as a Master Catechist, is a consultant for RCL

Benziger, and continues to grow in her profession having recently comConfirmation Parent Formation Coordinator. He has also served as a Parish

FROM WORSHIP INTO SERVICE:
ENGAGING CATHOLICS IN THE SOCIAL MISSION OF THE
CHURCH THROUGH THE POWER OF PRAYER AND MUSIC
St. Augustine once said that “the one who sings prays twice.” Notice he never said anything about singing on key! This workshop
will invite us to meditate on God’s love for the poor through music that you can use in various ministerial settings. If you love
singing, enjoy music, and/or have a hunger and thirst for serving
others in need; this workshop is for you.
Sergio Lopez is a former youth minister and worship leader from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. As a passionate husband, musician, and speaker he has dedicated his ministry to helping everyday Catholics make a difference in the world.
Sergio holds an MA in Religious Studies from Mount St. Mary’s University in Los
Angeles. He has worked for Catholic Relief Services since 2014.

BULLYING AT CATHOLIC SCHOOLS - ARE WE
ADDRESSING THE NEEDS OF LGBT STUDENTS?
Anti-bullying campaigns are now quite commonplace at secular/
public schools with many having formed Gay Straight Alliance
(GSA) clubs and addressing the issues of LGBT bullying head on.
What are parochial schools doing to address these issues? Speakers and audience will dialogue on best practices. This Session will
also provide suicide awareness/intervention training.

IS IT FOR YOU?
Join us as we discover what it means to be a Master Catechist
serving the catechetical community in the Archdiocese of Los
Angeles. May this workshop be a part of your overall discernment
on whether you are truly being called to this challenging and rewarding ministry.
Dione Grillo is the Consultant Advanced Catechetical Ministries and
Basic Catechist Formation for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Formerly
she served as Elementary Consultant for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles
and Director of Children's Ministry at St. John Eudes Church in Chatsworth, CA. While her educational background prepared her to attend law
school, she opted instead to answer the call to service. She has served on
the Early Childhood Board for 13 years and presented workshops at the
L.A. Religious Education Congress, Regional Congresses, and parishes.

PRAYER THROUGH THE AGES: FORM AND
FOCUS OF EFFECTIVE PRAYER FOR EVERYONE
How can we quiet ourselves to pray? What can we do to open
ourselves more to a deep spiritual life? This workshop will draw
on examples from the Saints, liturgy, and personal experience to
give a fresh perspective on nurturing an active and abundant prayer life.
Frank McKown is co-chair of the L.A. Archdiocese’s Catholic Ministry with
Lesbian and Gay Persons, founded in 1986 by Cardinal Mahony. The ministry is
the oldest such organization in the nation and provides a safe and welcoming environment for lesbians and gay persons through liturgy, outreach, education, and
fellowship. Mr. McKown has planned and led liturgies and retreats on a variety of
topics and has previously spoken at L.A. Regional Congress . A lifelong Angelino,
he received his BA from UCLA and MBA from Pepperdine University.
Maureen Pratt is an author, syndicated columnist with Catholic News Service,
and a frequent contributor to Saint Anthony Messenger Magazine, Relevant Radio
(Catholic radio), and Beliefnet.com. She writes and speaks about prayer, spirituality, and living with faith while facing health challenges. She is the author of "Peace in
the Storm: Meditations on Chronic Pain & Illness,""Beyond Pain: Job, Jesus, and
Joy," and the upcoming, "Don't Panic! Strength and Courage for All of Life's
Crises"(Franciscan Media, Spring 2016).

In this workshop, learn how to help children discover and celebrate “God’s moments” through prayer, music, discussion and
drama. Awaken Us to the Sacred, shows teachers ways to look
for experiences of God everywhere - every day and how to share
these experiences with their students by designing simple
“rituals.” This workshop is a simple guide to meeting God and
experiencing the divine in our lives. Sam Kauffman uses her original music, poetry and stories.
ROAD TO DISCIPLESHIP OR GRADUATION?
Studies have indicated that over 75% of those confirmed in high
school will no longer be active in the Catholic Church. With this
dire statistic, what can be done to change this? What are practical
ideas to keep those confirmed involved in their Catholic faith?
What are current programs that are addressing this topic and what
makes them so different than what has been done before? If you
want to make a difference in teens lives by keeping them active,
you don’t want to miss this workshop!
Sam Kauffman, internationally known Christian singer, retreat leader,
writer, workshop presenter, songwriter, dramatist and recording artist, a
roster artist with NEAG, does not remember a time when God and music
were not central to her life. Since starting a Servant’s Heart International Ministry and Music twenty-one years ago, Sam has presented close to
2,000 concerts, programs and retreats along with fourteen original, onewoman, musical biblical dramas. She has traveled extensively across the
United States and internationally singing in Europe and Canada. She
studied Liturgy at St. Patrick’s Seminary and JTU. As a former Catholic
school teacher, professional staff member of Camp Fire Boys and Girls
and Director/Producer of local youth musicals, Sam has had vast experience working with children of all ages.
Jim Knowles is the Diocesan Representative for Ascension Press, working with
Diocesan Offices in the West. His background includes Catholic Publishing, Diocesan and parish Youth Ministry and served as the Executive Director for the
NFCYM. Jim is married and lives in Loveland, CO and has two adult children.

Joan Doyle, catechetical consultant, workshop presenter, writer,
nationally certified Lay Ecclesial Minister has held a variety of positions
in her Los Angeles parish, St. Paul the Apostle (junior high religion
teacher and assistant principal; parish DRE). Joan serves annually as a
judge for the HUMANITAS PRIZE, rewarding writers of film and TV
shows that both, entertain and enrich the viewing public, and has written
the Study Guides for the DVD series "Film Clips for Catholic Youth
Faith Formation" and "Film Clips for Catholic Youth Faith Formation

The Pilgrim Virgin / La Virgen Peregrina
La Virgen Peregrina es una imagen de la Virgen de Guadalupe donada por la catedral de Nuestra Señora de Los Ángeles.
Cada año, la peregrina es presentada en el
congreso a una de las parroquias participantes
del congreso. La parroquia se queda con ella por
todo un año. ¿Qué hacen con ella? Básicamente,
la peregrina se hace peregrina dentro de la
misma comunidad parroquial. Nuestra Madre
va de casa en casa abriendo puertas y haciendo
familia. La virgen visita a cada catequista y se
queda con ella una semana, durante la cual, la
comunidad catequética y el vecindario es invitado
a rezar el rosario cada dia. La experiencia vivida
de aquellos que la han tenido es tan grande que al
final del año, aun no quisieran entregarla .
The Pilgrim Virgin is an image of Virgin Mary donated by the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.
Every year, La Peregrina, as we refer to this image, is presented at our regional congress to one of the participating parishes.
The parish keeps the image for a whole year, what do they do with her? Basically, the image becomes a pilgrim within the
parochial community. Our Blessed Mother goes from home to home opening doors and building community. The Pilgrim
Virgin visits each catechist in his/her home and stays there for a week during which, the catechetical community as well as
neighbors are invited to pray the rosary every day. The experience of those having shared their parish with La Peregrina is
so amazing that even when it’s their turn to return her at the following congress, they just want to keep her forever.

PUESTO QUE ¡ELLOS GUIARÁN AL PUEBLO DE DIOS!”
¿Está interesado en guiar a la gente hacia Jesucristo? ¿Por qué
algunas personas son más eficaces que otros en esta área? Dios
elige a los F.E.O. s para que guíen a su pueblo. Como siervos del
Señor, tenemos que ser Fieles a Dios. No hacerlo significa que
estaremos en peligro de guiar a otros erróneamente. En nuestras
parroquias, un problema grande es el de que muchas veces nos
representamos a nosotros mismos en lugar de representar a Jesucristo. Si queremos guiar al pueblo de Dios, tenemos que recordar
a quién estamos representando. ¡Yo debo disminuir para que Él
pueda aumentar!
BIBLIA Y LENGUAJE MÍTICO
El Mito, como lenguaje literario, contradice la opinión tradicional
que lo desprestigia afirmando que es solo un producto de la imaginación. El Mito es real. Nadie entenderá realmente la Biblia a
menos que capte su lenguaje, en especial el lenguaje mítico. Este
taller, será un breve excursos sobre el Mito y sobre las herramientas que nos llevarán a un entendimiento mas profundo de la historia bíblica.
Mario Romero, laico casado, es un Instructor de Estudios Bíblicos que ha

físico sino también mental, emocional y espiritual. Es esencial
tomar tiempo para el autocuidado y así hacernos presente y dar lo

PARA ENTENDER EL MENSAJE DE JESÚS
DE NAZARET EN LOS EVANGELIOS
Nos sentimos extraños ante el lenguaje original usado por los evangelistas para la mayoría de hombres y mujeres de nuestro tiempo. En
este taller intentaremos aproximarnos al mensaje que aquellas personas querían dar a sus contemporáneos y que nosotros las leemos dos
milenios más tarde. Haremos hincapié a lo que querían decir al narrar
ciertos acontecimientos como el nacimiento de Jesús, las bienaventuranzas, algunas acciones singulares de Jesús, la relación de Jesús con
las mujeres, etc.

CRECIENDO, MADURANDO Y PROFUNDIZANDO NUESTRA FE
En este taller compartiremos, dialogaremos, daremos ideas y
sugerencias de como CRECER, MADURAR, PROFUNDIZAR en la Fe. La Fe, no es algo estático, debe ser dinámica
y activa, debe llevarnos a compromisos ante la vida. La Fe,
es como una semilla de mostaza debemos buscar los lamentos para que crezca cada día. La fe es una luz en nuestro
camino. Como cristianos y como catequistas debemos profundizar cada día en ese DON maravilloso.

EL LABERINTO
El Laberinto es una herramienta de meditación donde los
participantes avanzan contemplativamente por un camino
que los lleva a un punto céntrico para una oración y concientización más profunda. Un proceso de “paso a paso” invitará
al participante a examinar su propio trayecto espiritual y a
experimentar la paz y tranquilidad que El Laberinto ofrece.
En esta sesión incorporaremos temas del Viejo Testamento,
espiritualidad Católica, naturaleza y ritual y sus conexiones
con El Laberinto. Ya sea que hayan caminado El Laberinto
por años o que sea su primera vez, ustedes conocerán nuevas
percepciones y revelaciones acerca de esta vieja herramienta
de meditación. Parte del taller será caminar El Laberinto en grupo.
Luella Wagner ha enseñado en las escuelas católicas durante 19 años en
el nivel primaria y secundaria. Ella ha enseñado en Los Ángeles, CA, Sao
Paulo, Brazil, American Samoa, y más recientemente en el norte de Cheyenne Reserva India en Montana sureste. Recientemente terminó su libro de
memorias sobre sus experiencias en la educación católica. Ella tiene una
credencial de enseñanza de UCLA y una maestría en teatro educativo de la
Universidad de Nueva York.

SI EL EVANGELIO ES ALEGRÍA, PORQUE LA TRISTEZA EN NUESTRA VIDA
La tristeza es síntoma de ausencia de Dios. En este taller
meditaremos sobre algunas afirmaciones del Papa francisco
en su exhortación apostólica " la alegría del evangelio" que
nos ayudaran a iluminar nuestro caminar cristiano.

3-31 BULLYING EN LAS ESCUELAS CATÓLICAS Y
MINISTERIOS- ¿ESTAMOS ATENDIENDO A LAS NECESIDADES DE LOS ESTUDIANTES LGBT?
En las escuelas seculares/públicas, las campañas anti-bullying son
comunes, y muchas escuelas han formado clubs de Gay Straight
Alliance (GSA) que concientizan sobre el problema de bullying
hacia los estudiantes LGBT. La pregunta es: ¿Qué se está haciendo
en las escuelas/ámbitos parroquiales para atender a estas necesidades? En esta clase dialogaremos sobre cuales son las mejores prácticas. La sesión también proveerá entrenamiento para reconocer las
señales para la intervención/prevención del suicidio.
Yunuen Trujillo ha trabajado por 10 años con grupos de jóvenes adultos
en la Región de San Gabriel. Como parte de el Equipo Arquidiocesano de
Pastoral Juvenil, ha fomentado la formación religiosa de los líderes de
grupos juveniles, motivándolos a participar en cursos arquidiocesanos de
formación integral. Su especialidad en el ministerio son los temas de Justicia Social y Doctrina Social de la Iglesia. También es parte de un Comité Organizador Local en la Iglesia de San Juan Bautista, organizando a la
comunidad en temas como inmigración, justicia económica, entre otros.
Actualmente forma parte del grupo "Siempre Serán Nuestros Hijos", un
grupo de apoyo para Padres y Familiares de Católicos LGBT y es temista
con el Ministerio Católico con Personas Gay y Lesbianas (CMLGP), ministerio Arquidiocesano.

En este taller, se abordarán puntos esenciales que proporcionen a
los participantes elementos para comprender mas a fondo la importancia de la salud mental, evitar el agotamiento emocional, y
aprender estrategias para desarrollar y fortalecer la salud emocional
y que lleve a la persona a ser un líder mas efectivo en su ministerio.

El ministerio catequético por excelencia, es un ministerio en el cual
podemos contribuir a que la pastoral en nuestras comunidades sea
más misionera. El Papa Francisco nos da unos lineamientos a seguir en la Exhortación Apostólica Evangelii Gaudium (La Alegría
del Evangelio). En este taller, reflexionaremos juntos en cómo
podemos seguir estas guías pastorales que nos da el Magisterio de
la Iglesia Católica.

3-35 RECUPERANDO LA IMAGEN Y EL MENSAJE DE 3-36 BIBLIA Y LENGUAJE MITICO
LA MUJER DE SAMARIA EN EL EVANGELIO DE JUAN
Este taller será un estudio Bíblico detallado de los relatos del
cuarto Evangelio con referencia a las mujeres portadoras de las
revelaciones mas importantes de la persona de Jesus. El cual nos
permitirá recuperar la verdadera identidad de la Mujer Samaritana y el verdadero sentido de la conversación entre Jesus y ella.
Este taller nos ayudará también a encontrar un mensaje inspirador para todos los cristianos hombres y mujeres sin obscurecer la
reputación femenina de esta Mujer que nombra a Jesus de Señor
a Mesías. Convirtiéndose en un ejemplo de discipulado para
todos al llamar a todo su pueblo y decirles “Vengan y Vean”.
Podremos ver que ese mismo mensaje sigue siendo nuestro
llamado a invitar a otros a venir y ver quien es Jesus, que nos
ha transformado.
El Mito, como lenguaje literario, contradice la opinión tradicional que lo desprestigia afirmando que es solo un producto de la
imaginación. El Mito es real. Nadie entenderá realmente la Biblia
a menos que capte su lenguaje, en especial el lenguaje mítico.
Este taller, será un breve excursos sobre el Mito y sobre las herramientas que nos llevaran a un entendimiento mas profundo de
la historia bíblica.
