Benefit Fund Director of Member Programs June Blain delivered a special welcome message to the retirees from Executive Director Mitra Behroozi, who was chairing the annual Trustees budget meeting. Among the other speakers was RMD President John Perkins, who told the crowd how fortunate 1199SEIU retirees are to have secure health and pension benefits while retirees around the country are in danger of losing theirs. “Our Union is fighting not just for working members, but for retirees too,” said President Perkins. 1199SEIU SecretaryTreasurer George Gresham encouraged retirees to continue their activism and stressed the importance of retirees paying their $5 monthly dues to keep the Union strong. see additional images of the Holiday Party on page 10 Retiree-01-06**.indd 1 1/23/06 4:31:40 PM 1199SEIU RMD President’s Message Mensage Del Presidente John Perkins Dear Sisters and Brothers, Now that the old year is past, it is time to look forward to 2006. We have a lot of work to do so I encourage you, more than ever, to attend your local chapter meetings to get up to date information pertaining to our benefits and the work of our Union. Our active members have serious challenges to face in the coming months and we will have to help them. This month, we celebrate the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr., who called 1199 his favorite Union. We can all learn from Dr. King’s struggles to help working people in this country and we should all do our part to protect our Union and our benefits. If you have not already paid your annual dues, please fill out the form on page 7. We need to keep our Union strong for the challenges ahead. Let’s have a healthy, happy and prosperous 2006! In Solidarity, John Perkins We Heard You! En Solidaridad, You may have noticed that this edition of the Retired Members Bulletin has schedules and events for January and February. That’s because you told us you wanted more information about Retired Members Activities earlier. So, starting in this edition, we will list chapter meetings, classes, trips, and other events a month in advance. This will give you the opportunity to take advantage of all the programs your Benefit Fund offers. Look for March’s events in next month’s bulletin. And as always, if you have suggestions for new classes or programs, we’d love to hear them. John Perkins January 2006 Retiree-01-06**.indd 2 QUESTIONS? General Motors, Ford Motor Company, Verizon, United Airlines—the same terrible story is being repeated. It has been a tradition of our Union to insist that our retired members get the same increased contribution to their healthcare benefits as working members. This has been a principle for us and it will continue to be a principle. But we can only continue to do this by keeping our Union strong. This means strong not only in terms of numbers and in terms of determination but it also means having the financial strength to win our campaigns. Isn’t it worth $5 a month to safeguard your health coverage and pensions? 1199SEIU retirees do not have compulsory dues. We ask for $5 a month from you, but this is a voluntary contribution. We know that our retirees are proud of their Union. We believe that most retirees would be happy to pay their $5 a month because it allows us to continue winning the best retiree healthcare benefits and pensions in the country. You can even sign up to have your dues automatically deducted from your pension check, which takes no effort at all on your part.
