Over 1,000 Retirees Celebrate at
the 2005 Anne Shore Holiday Party
More than one thousand
1199SEIU retired members
filled the New York Hilton on
December 15 at the annual
Anne Shore Holiday Party,
sponsored by the 1199SEIU
Benefit and Pension Funds.
Benefit Fund Director of
Member Programs June
Blain delivered a special
welcome message to the
retirees from Executive
Director Mitra Behroozi,
who was chairing the annual
Trustees budget meeting.
Among the other speakers
was RMD President John
Perkins, who told the crowd
how fortunate 1199SEIU
retirees are to have secure
health and pension benefits
while retirees around the
country are in danger of
losing theirs. “Our Union is
fighting not just for working
members, but for retirees
too,” said President Perkins.
1199SEIU SecretaryTreasurer George Gresham
encouraged retirees to
continue their activism and
stressed the importance
of retirees paying their $5
monthly dues to keep the
Union strong.

President’s Message
Mensage Del Presidente
John Perkins
Dear Sisters and Brothers,
Now that the old year is past,
it is time to look forward to
2006. We have a lot of work
to do so I encourage you, more
than ever, to attend your local
chapter meetings to get up to
date information pertaining to
our benefits and the work of our
Union. Our active members have
serious challenges to face in the
coming months and we will have
to help them.
This month, we celebrate the
birthday of Martin Luther King
Jr., who called 1199 his favorite
Union. We can all learn from Dr.
King’s struggles to help working
people in this country and we
should all do our part to protect
our Union and our benefits. If
you have not already paid your
annual dues, please fill out the
form on page 7. We need to
keep our Union strong for the
challenges ahead.
Let’s have a healthy, happy and
prosperous 2006!
In Solidarity,
John Perkins
We Heard
You!
Queridos Hermanas y
Hermanos,
Ahora que este año se va,
esperamos con ansias la llegada del
2006. Nosotros tenemos mucho
mantenerlos. Nuestros miembros
activos enfrentan grandes obstaculos
en los meses que se avecinan y
tenemos que ayudarlos a vencerlos.
En este mes celebramos el
cumpleaños de Martin Luther King
Jr., el cual llamo a la 1199 su union
favorita. Nosotros hemos aprendido
del Dr. King sobre su lucha constante
para ayudar a los trabajadores de
esta nacion y que debemos hacer
nuestra parte para tambien proteger
nuestra Union y nuestros beneficios.
Si usted todavia no ha pagado
su cuota anual, por favor llene la
forma en la pagina 7. Necesitamos
mantener nuestra Union fuerte para
enfrentar los obstaculos que se
avecinan.
Les deseo un prospero y saludable
año 2006!
En Solidaridad,
You may
have noticed
that this edition
of the Retired
Members Bulletin
has schedules and events for
January and February. That’s
because you told us you wanted
more information about Retired
Members Activities earlier. So,
starting in this edition, we will
list chapter meetings, classes,
trips, and other events a month
in advance. This will give you the
opportunity to take advantage of
all the programs your Benefit Fund
offers. Look for March’s events in
next month’s bulletin.
And as always, if you have
suggestions for new classes or
programs, we’d love to hear them.

Your Benefit Fund
Can Help You
Make Healthy
Changes for the
New Year
Here’s a suggestion for how to
start off 2006 on the right foot—or
feet: exercise. Regular exercise
can help keep your weight down,
your heart beating well, your
lungs functioning properly, your
blood circulating as it should, and
your energy high.
You can start the New Year right
by joining other retirees on
Thursdays at 11:00 am for our
yoga class at the Retired Members
Division. Or, if you prefer to
exercise at a gym, our Benefit
Fund now offers a discount fitness
program through Globalfit. Simply
call GlobalFit at (800) 294-1500
or visit GlobalFit on the Internet at
www.globalfit.com, and you can
join a local fitness club at up to
60% off the regular monthly rates.
Be sure to talk to your doctor first
before starting any new physical
activity or exercise program.

A Message From Your Union Leadership
Millions of our fellow retirees all across our country—many who fought
and won good Union contracts— are now faced with severe cuts and
even the loss of their pensions and healthcare benefits. General Motors,
Ford Motor Company, Verizon, United Airlines—the same terrible story
is being repeated.

to win good contracts.
It has been a tradition of our Union to insist that our retired members get
the same increased contribution to their healthcare benefits as working
members. This has been a principle for us and it will continue to be a
principle.
But we can only continue to do this by keeping our
Union strong. This means strong not only in terms
of numbers and in terms of determination but it
also means having the financial strength to win
our campaigns.
siendo.
Isn’t it worth $5 a month
to safeguard your health
coverage and pensions?
1199SEIU retirees do not have compulsory dues. We ask for $5 a month
from you, but this is a voluntary contribution. We know that our retirees
are proud of their Union. We believe that most retirees would be happy
to pay their $5 a month because it allows us to continue winning the
best retiree healthcare benefits and pensions in the country.
You can even sign up to have your dues automatically deducted from
your pension check, which takes no effort at all on your part.

Year End Financial Statements
1199SEIU Benefit and Pension Funds 2004 Summary Annual Report
The work of our 1199SEIU Family of Funds is remarkable in scope. Together, our Funds provide an unparalleled range of benefits including
health coverage, pension benefits, job training, education and affordable child care to our 1199SEIU members across all fields of health
care – in hospitals, nursing homes and home care. For each industry, there are several dedicated Funds and together, our collective benefits,
programs and services cover nearly half a million lives.

Guardian Life Insurance Company of America to pay Life Insurance and AD&D
claims incurred under the terms of the plan. The total premiums paid for the plan
year ending December 31, 2004 were $469,558.
Because Amalgamated Life Insurance Company is a so-called “experiencerated” contract, the premium costs are affected by, among other things, the
number and the size of the claims. Of the total insurance premiums paid of the
above plan year, the premiums paid under such “experience-rated” contracts
were $6786687 and the total of all benefit claims paid was $4,823,767.
Basic Financial Statement

January 1, 2004. During the plan year, the plan experienced a decrease in
its net assets of $57,660,430. This decrease includes unrealized appreciation
or depreciation in the value of plan assets; that is, the difference between the
value of the plan’s assets at the end of the year and the value of the assets
at the beginning of the year, or the cost of assets acquired during the year.
During the plan year, the plan had total income of $834,097,735. This income
included employer contributions of $813,874,296, COBRA contributions of
$3,079,241, realized gains of $7,260,633 from the sale of assets and earnings
