Step 1. Lay out the project by using stakes with a string line or garden hose. Dig a trench 6 in wide
and 4 in deep.
Step 2. Firmly compact the soil in the bottom of the trench with a tamper. Place 1 in of paver base in the
bottom of the trench and firmly compact.

Step 3. Position edger units end to end in the trench. Using a rubber mallet, tamp the edgers firmly into
place. Use a carpenter’s level to ensure your edger units are uniformly level. Continue to place the
units until the desired length of the project is finished.
Step 4. If necessary, edger units may be cut by using a circular saw with a masonry blade or split with a
hammer and chisel. Read and understand the operating manual before using a saw. Finish your
project by firmly packing along sides of edger units and replace sod or mulch.

How to Install Patios and Walkways

Call 811, Common Ground Alliance, a minimum of 2 to 3 days before starting your
project to have utilities marked.
Here are a few simple guidelines to get you started on
your weekend projects.
Sketch the boundaries of your yard
• Mark major features (house, trees, driveway, etc.).
• Note placement of windows and doors.
• Note where people walk.
Determine placement
• Draw view lines on your plan from windows and doors.
Beauty elements like patios, walkways or benches,
go along or around these lines so you can see them.
Utility elements like grills, trash cans, etc., go outside
the view lines.
• Add interest and depth with different levels, using steps
or retaining walls.
• Highlight entry and exit points with plantings or special
paving.
• Grills require 3 ft clearance on either side of the grill.
• Pathways need to be at least 3 ft wide.
• Patios with tables need to follow these guidelines:
4-ft round requires 10 ft x 10 ft of space
5-ft round requires 12 ft x 12 ft of space
4-ft rectangle requires 9 ft x 10 ft of space
5-ft rectangle requires 9 ft x 12 ft of space
Other tips
Slope away from the house.
Slope patios to make sure water runs away from the
house. As a rule, drop 1/4 in for every foot.
Cost assessment
Material costs will include pavers, retaining wall blocks,
joint sand, paver base and bedding sand. (Use estimating
charts and formulas for assistance.)
Don’t be afraid to think big, but if you make a plan for the
whole landscape, break it into manageable projects you
can tackle one at a time.

Otros consejos

Step 2. Install paver base to a compacted finished thickness of 4-6 in for patios
and walkways and 8-12 in for driveways. Paver base should be installed
in 4 in increments and thoroughly compacted.
Step 3. Lay two, 1 in diameter pipes parallel on base, several feet apart. Spread
1 in of sand over compacted base between pipes. Level sand by pulling
a straight 2-in x 4-in board across the pipes several times until sand is
smooth. Remove pipes and fill voids with sand, leveling with a trowel.
Repeat until base is covered with sand.
Step 4. Lay pavers or patio stones in the desired pattern. If the desired pattern
requires cutting, the pavers or patio stones can be cut with a tub saw.
Step 5. Install paver edge restraint and spikes around the entire project — 6 in
from edge of compacted aggregate according to the manufacturer’s
instructions.
Step 6. Compact* the pavers with a plate compactor in both directions with at
least two passes. Once compacted, spread paver sand over the surface
and sweep into joints. Compact* again to ensure all joints are completely
full. Sweep any loose sand from surface.
*Do not use plate compactor on patio stones. Simply sweep sand into joints until all joints are full.

STEP 1. Stake Out/Remove Sod − Lay out the wall using stakes with a string line or a garden hose to
mark the location of the back of the wall. Use the information below to determine the size of the
trench needed, and then dig.

STEP 2. Add and Compact Paver Base − Remove loose soil and firmly compact the soil with a tamper. Add a 2- to-3-in layer of base material in the bottom of the trench; rake and firmly compact. Use a carpenter’s level to ensure a uniform, level surface. Check level every few feet. Add
more base material and repeat until appropriate base depth is achieved.
STEP 3. Lay and Level Blocks − Use a hammer and chisel to remove the rear lips from all blocks for
the first course. Position the individual blocks side by side on the prepared base so that front
edges of the block are touching and the back edge aligns with the string line. Level block in
both directions. Begin next course by laying a block with the rear lip facing down in a staggered
relationship to the course beneath.
Each block lip should be in contact with the block below. Check each course for level before
continuing and make adjustments with a rubber mallet. Repeat the process until you reach the
desired wall height. To make a curve, use a hammer to remove edges of block lip.

• To split a block: Use a hammer and chisel to score the block on all sides. Pound the chisel on the score line until the block splits.
• To cut a block: Use a circular saw with a masonry blade.
• To make a 90-degree mitered corner: Use a circular saw with a masonry blade. Cut a
45-degree angle on two blocks. Glue cut sides together with exterior-grade concrete
adhesive so the two faces form the finished outside corner.

For capping curves, trim the caps to follow the radius of the wall. Place a cap at the beginning of the curve, skip a space and place the next cap in the third position. Rest a cap on top
of the original two, aligning the face with the adjacent caps. Mark the bottom of the cap along
the edges (as shown in Step 6). Use a circular saw or tub saw with a masonry blade to cut the
marked cap.
On a 90-degree corner, two caps need to be saw-cut to achieve a 45-degree mitered corner.
At the end of the wall, cut the cap so the manufactured edge is exposed and the cut edge is
against the next cap.

Always wear eye protection when cutting or splitting blocks.
