Wadjda vive en los suburbios de Riad, la capital de Arabia Saudita. A
pesar de su entorno conservador, Wadjda es una niña divertida que
siempre lleva las cosas al límite. Quiere desesperadamente una bonita
bicicleta verde, pero su madre se opone por temor a una sociedad que
ve las bicicletas como un peligro para la dignidad de una chica.
Wadjda lives in a suburb of Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. Despite
her conservative surroundings, Wadjda is a playfull girl who regularly
takes things too close to the limit. She longs for a beautiful green
bicycle but her mother is against the idea, conscious of the society that
sees bicycles as posing a threat to the dignity of a girls.

Alemania, 1945. La guerra ha terminado. Un grupo de niños se proponen atravesar el devastado país para reunirse con su abuela a 900 km
al norte. Lore, la mayor de ellos, queda a cargo de sus cuatro hermanos cuando sus padres, miembros de las SS, son capturados por las
tropas aliadas.
At the end of the war in Germany in 1945, a group of children set out to
cross a devastated country to reach their Grandmother some 900 km to
the North. The eldest, Lore, is left in charge of her four younger siblings
when their SS Nazi parents are taken into Allied custody.

Un lugar privilegiado para encuentros, intercambios y hallazgos,
los festivales ofrecen un ambiente vibrante y accesible para la
más amplia variedad de talentos, historias y emociones que
constituyen la cinematografía europea.
El Programa MEDIA de la Unión Europea pretende promocionar el
legado audiovisual europeo, favorecer el tránsito de películas entre
países y alentar la competitividad en la industria audiovisual. El
programa MEDIA reconoce el papel cultural, educativo, social y
económico de los festivales cofinanciado cada año casi 100 de ellos
por toda Europa.
Estos festivales destacan por su rica y variada programación europea, por su red de contactos y las oportunidades de encuentro e
intercambio tanto entre profesionales como entre el público en general; por sus actividades de apoyo a los jóvenes profesionales; por sus
iniciativas educativas y por la relevancia que se da al fortalecimiento
del diálogo entre culturas. En 2012, los festivales que recibieron la
financiación del Programa MEDIA han programado más de 20.000
proyecciones de obras europeas para casi 3 millones de cinéfilos.

and economic role of festivals by co-financing every year almost 100
of them across Europe.
These festivals stand out with their rich and diverse European
programming, networking and meeting opportunities for professionals
and the public alike, their activities in support of young professionals,
their educational initiatives and the importance they give to
strengthening inter-cultural dialogue. In 2012, the festivals supported

(Madrid, 1944). Licenciado en Derecho, realizó los estudios de guión y dirección en la antigua Escuela Oficial de Cinematografía. Su experiencia en el
mundo audiovisual es extensa y variada. Se ha relacionado y se relaciona con
el cine desde ámbitos tan variados como el periodismo o la docencia. Quizá
sea la televisión el medio en el que se ha labrado una trayectoria más prolífica. En los años 70 realizó diferentes espacios culturales para Televisión
Española (Galería, Cultura 2 e Imágenes) y en los 80 presenta y dirige el espacio La noche del cine español, una historia del franquismo a través de las películas y los noticiarios españoles. Pero sobre todo es conocida su adaptación
televisiva de La Regenta, producción que escribió y dirigió con gran éxito en
1994. Para el cine ha dirigido dos largometrajes, El hombre de moda (1980) y
el documental sobre Elías Querejeta El Productor (2006), y en teatro dirigió la
obras teatrales La calumnia de Lilian Hellman (2004), Agnes de Dios de
Joseph Pielsmeier (2006) y Galdosiana (2009), escrita por él mismo sobre textos de Benito Pérez Galdós.
Durante más de 40 años se ha dedicado a la crítica cinematográfica participando, con sus artículos, en algunas de las publicaciones más importantes del
país: Pueblo, Diario 16 o Fotogramas, Film Ideal, Reseña, Dirigido por…, etc.
Entre 1992 y 2008 fue el crítico titular de La Guía del Ocio de Madrid. Dentro
del mundo educativo ejerció como profesor de Teoría e Historia del Cine en la
Universidad de Valladolid durante 14 años. En 1994 fundó la Escuela de
Cinematografía y del Audiovisual de la Comunidad de Madrid (ECAM), que ha
dirigido desde entonces hasta Junio de 2012.
Entre los años 1986 y 1988 fue Director General del Instituto de Cine y Artes
Audiovisuales (ICAA) del Ministerio de Cultura. Ha sido miembro del Jurado
Internacional en los festivales de Valladolid, Málaga, Huelva, Huesca, Gijón,
Mostra de Valencia, Moscú, Karlovy Vary, Montreal, Montecarlo y Biarritz. En
2008 fue nominado al Goya a la Mejor Película Documental por El Productor.

Cinematografía. His experience in the world of audiovisuals is both broad and
varied. He has been involved with film, and indeed, continues to be involved
with it at many tangents ranging from journalism to teaching. But it is perhaps
in television where his working life has been most fruitful. In the 1970s he produced various cultural programmes and slots for Spanish Television (Galería,
Cultura 2 and Imágenes) while in the 1980s he presented and directed the late
night slot focusing on Spanish film, La noche del cine español, a history of
Franco and Francoism by way of analyzing films and Spanish news bulletins.
He is more well-known however for his TV adaptation of La Regenta, an
enormously successful production that he wrote and directed. He has directed
two feature films, El hombre de moda (1980) and the documentary about Elías
Querejeta El Productor, (2006); for the theatre he has directed La calumnia
(2004), Agnes de Dios (2006) and Galdosiana (2009), written by him after
studying works by Benito Pérez Galdós.
He has been a film critic for over 40 years and his articles have appeared in
such key Spanish publications as: Pueblo, Diario 16 and Fotogramas, Film
Ideal, Reseña, Dirigido por…, etc. He lectured in Film Theory and History at the
University of Valladolid for 14 years. Between 1992 and 2008 he was the head

Nació en 1980 en Gyöngyös, Hungría. Director de cine y televisión, guionista y miembro de la Academia de Cine Europeo,
Viktor Oszkár se graduó como cinesta en la University of Film
and Drama de Budapest en 2009. Ha dirigido tres cortos: A tárca
(The Purse, 2005), Öreg fa (The Old Tree, 2006) and A vizsga
(The Exam, 2006).
Su trabajo de graduación fue el largometraje Apaföld (Father!s
Acre, 2009) que ganó el Premio Gene Moskowitz de la crítica
extranjera en la 40 Edición de la Semana del Cine Húngaro, y
participó en la sección oficial de largomentrajes del Festival
Internacional de Cine de Valencia - Cinema Jove 2010. Ese
mismo año, la película fue nominada para los Premios del Cine
Europeo y entró en competición en el Festival de Cine de
Tesalónica.
Trabaja desde hace cinco años como realizador freelance y ha
demostrado su talento como director en varios géneros cinematográficos: dirigió un episodio de la popular serie de televisión
Logbook (producción para MTV, Hungría), su película documental Bernadett & Sanju (un episodio de la serie documental
3Weddings), así como Caught Between Two Worlds, un
documental producido para HBO, Central Europe en 2010, e

Film Academy, Viktor Oszkár graduated as a film director at the

He has been working as a freelance filmmaker for five years
and has proved his talent as a director in several film genres: he
directed one episode of the popular TV-series Logbook
(production for MTV, Hungary), his documentary film Bernadett &
Sanju (an episode of 3Weddings documentary series), as well as
Caught Between Two Worlds a documentary produced for HBO,
Central Europe in 2010, and Invázió (Invasion, in postproduction).

degree in Visual Communication from the Kunsthochschule
Kassel (in Film and Television), he studied directing at the
Kunsthochschule für Medien in Cologne. In 2008 he received a
scholarship to attend the Andrzej Waida Master School of Film
Directing in Warsaw. He has directed a number of award
winning short films: Hotelzimmer, Turnverein, Nie solo sein and
Esther, as well as a TV movie, Innere Werte.
His first feature film, Above Us Only Sky (2011), was
awarded with the Label Europa Cinemas Award during the 2011
Berlinale and opened the 26th edition of the Valencia
International Film Festival Cinema Jove, where he participated
in the feature film official section.
Currently he has just finished his second film, Vergiss mein Ich,
which will come out in the spring of 2014. Jan Schomburg lives
and works in Cologne and Berlin.

Royal College of Art. Sus cortos han obtenido numerosos premios
nacionales e internacionales, incluyendo el premio al 'Uso Más Creativo
de las Nuevas Tecnologías' en los British Animation Awards 1998, un
Bafta en 2000 por The Man with the Beautiful Eyes y una nominación
al Bafta 2002 por Camouflage.

He’s an internationally renowned, award winning animation director
based in London. He was born in Oxford and educated at Liverpool
Polytechnic and the Royal College of Art. His short films have won
numerous international and national awards including the Award for ‘The
Most Creative Use of New Technology’ at the British Animation Awards
1998, a BAFTA in 2000 for The Man with the Beautiful Eyes and a
BAFTA nomination in 2002 for Camouflage.
He was a director at Felix Films, a founder member of Bermuda Shorts
and a director at Speedy Films before setting up Sherbet with Producer
Jonathan Bairstow in 1996. Here he has directed a variety of high profile TV commercials including campaigns for Saab, Bell Atlantic
Telecommunications, Bank of Switzerland and Persil. In 2003 he set up
Hodgson Films as an outlet for his personal films and continues to be
represented by Sherbet for commercials.
In 2005 he was featured on the BBC4 Documentary series Animation
Nation. He has presented retrospectives of his work at several festivals
and in 2006 presented master classes in three Canadian cities for the
National Film Board of Canada.
His work is featured on several DVD compilations and in many books,
most recently Clare Kitson's British Animation: The Channel Four
Factor. He has lectured extensively including Royal College of Art,
Surrey Institute Farnham and the Film Akademie Barden Wurtemburg,
Germany. In 2008 he became programme leader for BA Animation at
Middlesex University. In 2011 he directed the animation for Wonderland:
The Trouble with Love and Sex, the first full length animated documentary on British TV. He continues to combine teaching with a freelance
career.

Nació en Bucarest, Rumanía en 1986. En 2004, realizó un

primer año en la universidad realizó dos documentales y un
corto y en 2008 dirigió dos anuncios publicitarios.
En 2009, Tache finalizó sus estudios de Comunicación
Audiovisual y entonces comenzó a trabajar en su siguiente
corto Musafirul, que finalizó en 2010. Musafirul participó en
varios festivales tales como FIFF Namur, Next International
Film Festival (Festival Friends), Nevada City International Film
Festival, y el Timishort International Film Festival.
En 2011, Tache creó su propia compañía de producción 'Take
Films' y dirigió y produjo dos cortos. Uno de ellos, Pestele cel
mare –co-dirigido junto a Cristian Negoescu-, fue seleccionado en el Dakino Film Festival y proyectado en el Anonimul Film
Festival (fuera de competición).
También dirigió un video musical en 2012 para el famoso
cantante rumano, Johnny D., Bye Bye. Su corto Weekend la
mare obtuvo el premio Luna de Valencia al mejor corto en
Cinema Jove 2012. Acaba de finalizar su último cortometraje,
Calatoria (2013), y actualmente está trabajando en su primer
proyecto de largometraje.
He was born in 1986 in Bucharest, Romania. In 2004 he
started to attend a cinematography course which made him
chose the Media Film University after he graduated from high
school. In his first year at Media University he made two
documentaries and one short length film and, in 2008, he
directed two TV commercials.
In 2009 he finished Media University, and then began
working on his next short film, The Guest, which he
completed in 2010. The Guest participated in several festivals
such as FIFF Namur, Next International Film Festival (Festival
Friends), Nevada City International Film Festival, and
Timishort International Film Festival.
In 2011 he created his own production company ‘Take Films’
and directed and produced two short films. The Big Fish,
co-directed with Cristian Negoescu, was selected at Dakino
Film Festival and screened at Anonimul Film Festival (out of
competition). He also directed a music video for a famous
Romanian singer in 2012, Johnny D: Bye Bye.
His next short, Weekend Getaway, was awarded with the
Luna de Valencia to the best short in Cinema Jove 2012. He
has just completed his new short film, The Journey (Calatoria,
2013) and currently is working in his first feature film project.

PREMIO LUNA DE VALENCIA: TOMAS ALFREDSON
Nos honra Tomas Alfredson en esta 28 edición del Festival
aceptando nuestro homenaje, el premio Luna de Valencia y la
presentación de su retrospectiva. La visita de Alfredson tiene un
especial significado para nosotros: por un lado, se trata de uno
de los grandes cineastas contemporáneos, cuyas dos últimas
películas han atraído merecidísimamente la atención internacional. No es sólo que las dos hayan acaparado importantísimos
premios en todo el mundo; tanto o más relevante es que las
consideremos ya clásicos para el futuro y cuanto ambas suponen como renovación de los géneros cinematográficos, en la
medida en que la libertad como cineasta con que Alfredson
aborda tanto Déjame entrar (Lat den rätte koma inn, 2008)
como El topo (Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy, 2010) trasciende los
códigos tradicionales tanto del melodrama, como del fantástico
y del noir. Esa misma libertad que hace de él un renovador
acredita para nosotros el atractivo de su obra, y nos estimula a
ofrecer su retrospectiva, por la que el público podrá disfrutar de
sus películas suecas anteriores a las que le han valido el reconocimiento internacional, y que ayudan a trazar las constantes
temáticas y estilísticas de su filmografía.
Nos llena de satisfacción el poder acercar al público tanto su
obra como al propio Tomas Alfredson, quien es, probablemente,
el cineasta más elegante de nuestros tiempos.

TOMAS ALFREDSON
We are honoured to have Tomas Alfredson with us at this 28th
edition of the Festival; he’ll accept our homage to him as well as
the Luna de Valencia prize at the presentation of his retrospective screenings. Alfredson’s visit is particularly significant to us;
on the one hand we have in our midst one of the greatest
contemporary filmmakers whose last two films have deservedly
attracted international acclaim. It’s not just the mere fact that
these two films have won top prizes around the world but
perhaps what is more relevant is that we consider them to be
classics of the future and that they represent solid evidence for
the renewal of film genres. We can base our observations on
how Alfredson freely approaches the challenges both in Let the
Right One In (Lat den rätte koma inn, 2008) and Tinker
Taylor Soldier Spy made in 2010. Both works transcend
traditional discourses both in the treatment of melodrama with
regard to the fantasy and noir genres. This freedom that
converts him into an agent of filmic renewal is the key to the
attraction he holds for us and hence we have eagerly
programmed a retrospective cycle of screenings that audiences
will be able to enjoy, including his earlier Swedish films. Such
works have led to his international recognition and help us trace
thematic and stylistic core values in his film trajectory.
With enormous satisfaction we offer film-going audiences his
works as well as the physical presence of Tomas Alfredson
himself; he is probably the most elegant filmmaker of our times.

tema de una película para Jonathan Hodgson. Polifacético e
innovador en su forma de sensibilizar al espectador, no hay
nada tan complejo, delicado y excitante como la vida misma
para este artista. Constituye su fuente de inspiración para investigar en el potencial creativo de la animación, como medio
visual para interpretar y comunicar temas complejos, abstractos
y difíciles. Sus filmes manifiestan su interés particular en el funcionamiento de la mente consciente e inconsciente, y su trabajo

Any situation or setting in life can indeed become the theme of
a film for Jonathan Hodgson who, with his polyfacetic and
innovative proposals, aims to enhance the awareness and
sensitivity of audiences. There is nothing more complex, delicate
and stimulating as life itself for this artist. Hodgson draws from
his source of inspiration as he researches the creative potential
of animation as a visual medium aimed at interpreting and
communicating complex, abstract and difficult issues. His films
reflect his personal interest in the workings of the mind – both
conscious and unconscious; his creative output is all about
offering ‘another vision’ to be digested by the public and thereby
stimulate serious, in-depth debate.
Let’s take Feeling My Way (1997) for example; it is
conceptually a simple film but it has a tremendous emotional
impact that empowers audiences by demonstrating the richness
and validity of our points of view. A significant part of the content
in his works can be traced back directly to his personal
experience, to the fact that he has discussed and contrasted
with others the world that surrounds him.

En esta edición hemos querido celebrar las 21 ediciones del premio Un Futuro de
Cine otorgándolo ex aequo. Con estos premios buscamos estimular a jóvenes actores cuyas interpretaciones, aun con carreras cortas por razón de su juventud, ya nos
han llamado la atención por su solidez.
MACARENA GARCÍA
Aun con sólo dos películas en su filmografía, Blancanieves (Pablo Berger, 2012) y
Todos están muertos (Beatriz Sanchís, 2013, ésta todavía en fase de postproducción), Macarena cuenta con una exitosa experiencia en el mundo de las series televisivas. Su capacidad para expresar emociones con su rostro, con el lenguaje de su
cuerpo y sin apoyo alguno del texto, en el silente personaje protagonista de
Blancanieves, la convierte en firme candidata para un futuro cargado de interpretaciones memorables. De hecho, este papel le ha valido ya el reconocimiento del jurado en la pasada edición del Festival Internacional de Cine de San Sebastián, así
como el Goya a la Mejor Actriz Revelación. Sin duda, su trabajo le depara un espléndido futuro de cine por delante.
GORKA OTXOA
Con una trayectoria y una popularidad ganadas en series televisivas, le llega el
reconocimiento en el terreno cinematográfico a partir de su personaje protagonista
en Pagafantas (Borja Cobeaga, 2009), por el que consiguió la nominación al Goya
como Actor Revelación. Su notable vis cómica le sitúa en la mejor tradición de los
grandes actores de nuestro cine y títulos como Bypass (Patxo Tellería, Aitor Mazo,
2012) muestran su capacidad para desenvolverse cómodamente en tonos más
amargos. Gorka también es un profesional riguroso, que selecciona sus proyectos
con criterios de calidad, declinando ofrecimientos que, si bien pueden granjearle rápidos éxitos comerciales, queden lejos de su inquietud artística. Se trata, obviamente,
de un actor con una personalidad única, bastante singular en el cine español de
nuestros días.
In this edition of the festival we’ve decided to celebrate the 21 times that the prize
Un Futuro de Cine (A future in Film) has been awarded; this time we nominate the
winners ex aequo. Through these prizes, we hope to provide stimuli for young actors
and actresses whose career pathways are still short by virtue of their youth but which
nonetheless have drawn our attention.
MACARENA GARCÍA
With only two films in her filmography, Blancanieves (Pablo Berger, 2012) and
Todos están muertos (Beatriz Sanchís, 2013, still in post-production), Macarena
has already attained success in the world of TV series. Her ability to express facial
emotion, her own body language, and her skill at not having to rely on text in her interpretation of her silent character in Blancanieves, has turned her into a solid candidate for a shining future in acting. In fact, this part she played has already earned for
her a Jury Mention at the last Festival Internacional de Cine de San Sebastián, as
well as a Goya for Best Revelation Actress. There can be no doubt that her work is
already heading for a splendid future in film.

With a good start in his acting curriculum and also due to the sheer popularity
attained through TV series, recognition started to come after his interpretation of the
main character in Friend Zone (Borja Cobeaga, 2009), for which he obtained a Goya
nomination for Revelation Actor. His notable vision of comedy places him firmly in the
best tradition of the great actors of our cinema. In titles such as Bypass (Patxo
Tellería, Aitor Mazo, 2012) we see a clear demonstration of the ease with which he
develops more painful situations in acting discourse. There is rigour in Gorka’s professional outlook, reflected in personal criteria hinging on quality when selecting acting projects; he will turn down offers that may have a quick commercial return but are
too distant from the creative challenges he pursues. We obviously have in Gorka an
actor with a steadfast individual outlook, something that is not so common today in
the present climate of Spanish film.

Xabi visits the hospital to bid farewell to Maria, a friend on her deathbed
due to an incurable heart condition. Before going in to see her, he
discovers she's always been secretly in love with him, and comes up
with the mad idea of saying that he feels the same in an effort to make
‘her last hours a little sweeter’.

Desde hace ya cinco años el Festival viene proponiendo la presencia de clásicos del cine en su programación a través de la sección Cuadernos de rodaje.
Tratándose de un Festival en el que muchos de los cineastas presentados son
jóvenes, siempre nos pareció importante evitar cualquier tentación endogámica
y mostrar nuestra convicción de que, incluso para la ruptura y la transgresión,
el conocimiento de cuanto vino primero es esencial. En este sentido, no quisimos, cuando ideamos esta sección, que la propuesta de clásicos viniera del
Festival, y creímos más estimulante para el público que las propuestas vinieran
de los cineastas que admiran los propios espectadores del Festival. Un fascinante cuaderno con anotaciones y dibujos que nos mostraba Guillermo del
Toro, llegado al festival mientras preparaba El laberinto del Fauno (Pan!s
Labyrinth), y unas confidencias de Nicolas Winding Refn sobre sus referencias
cinematográficas, contribuyeron a reforzar la idea de esta sección.
En esta edición hemos encargado la selección de películas que más han influido en su carrera al cineasta Rodrigo Cortés, admiradísimo desde sus inicios en
el mundo del cortometraje hasta sus más recientes El concursante, Buried y Red
Lights. Hemos decidido incluir sus dos últimas películas como marco de su selección de clásicos, así como el cortometraje 15 días, por el que Cortés ganó en
nuestro Festival un premio del canal Studio Universal que le permitía integrarse
en la estructura de producción de los Universal Studios californianos, y conocer
desde dentro su funcionamiento. Parece evidente que Cortés fue un alumno
aventajado.
Rodrigo Cortés nos propone una magnífica selección que abarca desde Buster
Keaton a Alan Parker, pasando por Wilder, Hitchcock, Fellini y Welles. Como nos
confiesa, “ha sido más difícil decidir cuáles quedan fuera que los títulos que
incluiría”. Le parece una selección interesante por cómo es en su conjunto, un
tanto extraña, mientras echa en falta, sobre todo, un Scorsese (nos facilitó un par
de títulos que no estaban disponibles en 35mm en el momento de reunir esta
selección). También le habría gustado incluir títulos de Bob Fosse, Otto
Preminger, Howard Hawks, Peter Weir o David Lynch, cineastas con películas
que también se cuentan entre sus influencias más determinantes. En cualquier
caso, Cortés nos ofrece una lista para degustar en su integridad, que podremos
disfrutar en sus formatos originales y pantalla grande (grandísima), en la forma
para la que fueron concebidas estas películas. ¡A disfrutar!
For five years now, the Festival has striven to give due consideration to film classics in the Cuadernos de rodaje (Shooting Notes) section. Given that we are a
Festival where many of the filmmakers presented are young, we have always
been wary of falling into biased temptation; we have gone to lengths to point out
that in order to break into new ground, to transgress, the knowledge of what came
before is in fact essential. In this sense, when devising the content of this section,
we wanted the public, the spectators, to propose it, rather than the Festival itself.
The appearance of a fascinating sketchbook with annotations shown to us by
Guillermo del Toro who attended the festival while he was preparing Pan!s
Labyrinth and some comments stated in confidence by Nicolas Winding Refn on
cinematographic references, contributed to the idea of reinforcing this section.
In this edition, we have prepared a selection of works that have most influenced
the filmic trajectory of our highly admired Rodrigo Cortés; we will look at his early
short films and also his key recent works El Concursante, Buried and Red Lights.
We have decided to include his last two films in his personal selection of classics,
as well as the short film 15 días which earned for Cortés a Universal Studio
channel award that enabled him to work and learn within the production structure
of the California-based Universal Studios; hence, he gained first-hand knowledge
of the finer points of its production approach. It is quite patent that Cortés was an
applied student there.
To our delight, Rodrigo Cortés proposes a magnificent selection that goes all
the way from Buster Keaton to Alan Parker, without leaving aside Wilder,
Hitchcock, Fellini and Welles. He confided: “it has been more difficult to decide
which ones to leave out than those which should be included”. He thinks the
overall choice is interesting in itself and admits it is a bit bizarre; he does miss
however a Scorsese film (he gave us a few titles that were not available in 35mm
when this list of selected films was being physically pieced together). He would
also like to have seen titles by Bob Fosse, Otto Preminger, Howard Hawks, Peter
Weir and David Lynch as they are filmmakers that have also had a significant
influence on him. In any case, Cortés offers us a list for our total enjoyment in
their original formats for the big wide screen - in exactly the way they were
envisaged (big and wide!).Let’s enjoy them!

cineastas presentados en España por el Festival Internacional
de Cine de Valencia - Cinema Jove acaben acaparando los
principales premios de los más prestigiosos festivales y eventos
cinematográficos del mundo.
Sin ir más lejos, en la edición del Festival de Cannes del año
pasado, seis cineastas plenamente asociados a nuestro evento
competían en las distintas secciones del festival más relevante
del mundo, y cinco de ellos conseguían incluso alzarse con
varios de los premios del Palmarés. Hemos decidido reunir
esas mismas películas y ofrecerlas en grupo al público, porque
dan buena muestra del espíritu de este Festival: aunque se
trata de cineastas muy distintos entre ellos, todos tienen en
común una línea de independencia, de inconformismo estético
y narrativo, que se manifiesta en cada caso en función del estilo de cada director.
Matteo Garrone, Cristian Mungiu, Joachim Lafosse, Xavier
Dolan, Andrew Dominik y Thomas Vinterberg – quien ha escogido el Festival de Valencia para presentar en España todas sus
películas rodadas entre Celebración y La caza – son estos seis
cineastas. A ellos añadimos el nombre de Nicolas Winding
Refn, quien en 2011 ganaba en Cannes el premio al Mejor
Director.

For a number of years now, it has become commonplace for
filmmakers who had been presented in Spain at the
International Film Festival of Valencia – Cinema Jove to later
receive top prizes at the most prestigious film festivals and
events in the world.
We only need to look at the Cannes Festival of last year where
six filmmakers fully associated with our event competed in the
various sections of the world’s most relevant festival; five of
them were thrown into the limelight and won several prizes. It is
precisely those films that we have decided to bring together in
order to offer them in block to the public. In doing so, we feel we
are championing the spirit of the Festival; even though the
filmmakers concerned are all quite different, they all share a
common current of independence and nonconformity in terms of
aesthetics and narrative that takes on the stylistic discourse of
each director.
Matteo Garrone, Cristian Mungiu, Joachim Lafosse, Xavier
Dolan, Andrew Dominik and Thomas Vinterberg – who has
chosen the Festival of Valencia to present in Spain all his films
he has shot between The Celebration to The Hunt – are these
six filmmakers. To this list we must of course add Nicolas
Winding Refn, who in 2011 won the Cannes prize for Best
Director.

PRIME THE ANIMATION!
El programa Prime the Animation! muestra una selección del los mejores trabajos
producidos en los últimos años por estudiantes de animación en tres universidades
internacionales: Middlesex University (Londres, Reino Unido), Universitat
Politècnica de València (España) y Emily Carr University of Art + Design (Vancouver,
Canadá).
Licenciatura (de Excelencia) en Animación en la Middlesex University, Londres
(Reino Unido)
Desde principios de la década de 1980 los estudiantes de la Universidad de Middlesex
han llegado a convertirse en algunos de los grandes nombres de la escena de la animación del Reino Unido. Nuestros alumnos incluyen nominaciones a los Oscar, como la
leyenda de la animación Joanna Quinn, Aardman Animation, el director Luis Cook y
Neville Astley (creador de Peppa Pig). En Middlesex creemos apasionadamente en la
importancia de la experimentación formal y conceptual, lo que combinado con una minuciosa exploración del arte de la animación, la narración, el lenguaje cinematográfico y el
dibujo, ayuda a nuestros estudiantes a encontrar su propia visión y a desarrollar enfoques
innovadores para la animación.

Jevremovic, Joanna Quinn o Juan Padrón, han impartido cursos en Valencia. La puesta
en marcha del Máster en Animación de la UPV, en 2010, ha consolidado los estudios de
animación en la Facultad de Bellas Artes, fomentando un espíritu experimental que aúna
el uso de técnicas tradicionales de animación y nuevos medios.

The film program Prime the Animation! showcases a selection of the best work produced over the last years by students of animation at three international Universities:
Middlesex University (London, UK), Universitat Politècnica de València (Spain) and
Emily Carr University of Art + Design (Vancouver, Canada).
BA (Honours) Animation at Middlesex University, London (UK)
Since the early 1980s students from Middlesex University have gone on to become some
of the biggest names in the UK animation scene. Our alumni include Oscar nominated
animation legend Joanna Quinn, Aardman Animation director Luis Cook and Peppa Pig
creator Neville Astley. At Middlesex we passionately believe in the importance of formal
and conceptual experimentation, which combined with a thorough exploration of the craft
of animation, storytelling, film language and drawing helps our students to find their own
vision and develop innovative approaches to animation.
B.A. & Master’s Programme in Animation at Universitat Politècnica de València
(Spain)
In 1997 the Faculty of Fine Arts of the UPV started the animation programme. Since then,
numerous national professionals, such as Grangel Studio or Pablo Llorens, and international directors, such as Gil Alkabetz, Priit Pärn, Vuk Jevremovic, Joanna Quinn and Juan
Padrón, have given workshops and master classes at the UPV in Valencia. The launch of
the Master’s in Animation at the University, in 2012, has consolidated an advanced study
programme in animation at the Faculty of Fine Arts, encouraging its experimental spirit, by
combining the use of traditional animation techniques and new media.
