Turismo Sostenible
El 27 de junio se realizo la feria tecnológica
de turismo sostenible en el centro cívico de
San Juan del Sur, contó con la presencia de
18 patrocinadores/proveedores tecnologías
y servicios. Participaron de más de 50
empresas (hoteles, restaurantes, otros) de
San Juan del Sur y Tola. Se estima que la
cantidad total de visitantes en la feria superó
las 120 personas.
A Technology and Sustainable Tourism Fair was held on June 27th at
the Civic Center of San Juan del Sur which attracted about eighteen sponsors from
the technology sector. There were more than 50 businesses from San Juan del Sur and
Tola participating in the trade show and it was estimated that the total number of
visitors exceeded 120 people.

According to the National Forestry
Institute - INAFOR, the rate of
deforestation in Nicaragua is almost 10%
less than it was in 2011, dropping from
70,000 hectares to 63,270 hectares. The
numbers were backed up by two
independent bodies; Global Forest Watch
and Global Forest Change who use satellite
imagery to calculate the numbers. Going
back further, between the year 2000 and
2005, the deforestation rate was more than
133,000 hectares per year. The government
of Nicaragua claims that their policy of
adaptation to climate change has produced
these encouraging numbers. INAFOR is
also promoting the National Reforestation
Crusade of 2014, which aims to reforest
23,000 hectares with 11 million trees.
Kamilo Lara is an environmentalist and
member of the Commission of the
Nicaraguan Canal Project. He says that
the canal route would follow a “surgical
route” that will be designed to prevent
damage to protected areas. He said that the
final choice of the route from the lake out to
the Atlantic would not be one of the 15 year
old routes but rather a new route based on
scientific and technical diagnosis. The
Private Secretary to the President on Public
Policy, Paul Oquist also said last week that
the environmental and feasibility studies
along with the exact route will be presented
in July. Lara dismissed claims from experts
such as Jaime Incer Barquero, Presidential

Adviser on Environmental Issues,
suggesting that Incer is using 50 year old
information and claimed to have a new
study of the bathymetry (the underwater
equivalent of topography) of the lake
bottom.
The tectonic action of the Coco and
Caribbean plates gave a little wakeup call
(at 5.38am) last Friday to the Masachapa
tourist beach area on the Pacific Coast, 46
km southwest of Managua. An earthquake
registering 4.3 on the Richter scale was felt
in the area, however; there were no reports
of damage or casualties. In all, on Thursday
and Friday of last week, there were about 18
earthquakes registered around the county
with magnitudes ranging from 2.5 to 4.3
degrees on the Richter scale.
The National Assembly has given approval
to foreign military ships, aircraft and
personal to engage in exchange experiences
and training with Nicaraguan troops. The
operations will all take place in the second
half of this year. Troops from Russia, United
States, Venezuela, Guatemala, Honduras,
Brazil, Dominican Republic, Belize, China
and Taiwan will visit Nicaragua and many
of them will be here to help celebrate the
anniversary of the Army of Nicaragua in
September. The Nicaraguan troops
deployed will go to other countries that
Nicaragua has a relationship with.
The new Law of the National Police was
approved last week by the National
Assembly. According to the police, the new
law is intended to modernize and
development the police in Nicaragua and

has consolidated many of the changes made
in policing since the current 2006 law was
approved, such as the proactive, preventive
and community model. The new law extends
the years of service of Senior Officers of the
National Police to 40 years or 65 years of age
and allows for reinstatement of retired
officers. It also allows for the Presidential
extension the Chief of Police beyond the
usual 5 year term. It also confirms that the
President of Nicaragua is also the Supreme
Commander of the National Police.
Nineteen specialist departments are clarified
by the law, mostly offices that have been
establish since 2006; Airport Security
Directorate, Special Operations, Specialist
units for Women, Children and Adolescent
issues, Counterintelligence Directorate and
the Department of Tourist Police among
others.
The German Ambassador to Nicaragua;
Karl-Otto König met with René Núñez from
the Nicaraguan National Assembly last
week to inform him that Germany was very
interested in helping with the canal project
and that a delegation of politicians from the
Social Democratic Party of Germany who
will be here this month to analyze the
economic attractions for investing. König
was straight forward and told Nunez that
Germany still has a 1980's image of a
Nicaragua. König suggested that the main
task for Nicaragua is to globalize its image
through more openness to foreigners and
participating in major trade fairs if it wishes
to attract the interest of German industry and
entrepreneurs.

Según el Instituto Nacional Forestal INAFOR, la tasa de deforestación en
Nicaragua es casi de un 10% menos de lo que
era en el 2011, bajando de 70.000 hectáreas a
63.270 hectáreas. Los números fueron
respaldados por dos organismos
independientes; Global Forest Watch y
Cambio Global del Bosque que utilizan
imágenes satelitales para calcular los
números. Más atrás, entre los años 2000 y
2005, la tasa de deforestación era más de
133.000 hectáreas por año. El gobierno de
Nicaragua afirma que su política de
adaptación al cambio climático ha
producido estos números alentados.
INAFOR está promoviendo también la
cruzada nacional de reforestación de 2014,
que pretende reforestar 23.000 hectáreas con
11 millones de árboles.
Kamilo Lara es un ambientalista y
miembro de la Comisión del proyecto de
Canal nicaragüense. Dice que la ruta del
canal seguiría una "ruta quirúrgica" que será
diseñada para evitar daños a las áreas
protegidas. Dijo que la elección final de la
ruta desde el lago hacia fuera hasta el
Atlántico no sería una de las rutas de 15 años
de edad, pero más bien una nueva ruta en
base a diagnóstico científico y técnico. El
secretario privado del Presidente en las
políticas públicas, Paul Oquist también dijo
la semana pasada que en julio se presentarán
los estudios ambientales y de factibilidad
junto con la ruta exacta. Lara rechazó
afirmaciones de expertos como Jaime Incer

utilizando información de 50 años de edad y
afirmó tener un nuevo estudio de la
batimetría (equivalente submarino de
topografía) del fondo del lago.

La Asamblea Nacional ha dado aprobación
a las naves militares extranjeras, aviones y
personal a participar a cambio experiencias
y entrenamiento con las tropas
nicaragüenses. Las operaciones sólo tendrán
lugar en la segunda mitad de este año. Las
tropas de Rusia, Estados Unidos, Venezuela,
Guatemala, Honduras, Brasil, República
Dominicana, Belice, China y Taiwán
visitarán Nicaragua y muchos de ellos
estarán aquí para ayudar a celebrar el
aniversario del ejército de Nicaragua en
septiembre. Las tropas nicaragüenses
desplegadas irán a otros países con los que
Nicaragua tiene una relación.
La nueva ley de la policía nacional fue
aprobada la semana pasada por la Asamblea
Nacional. Según la policía, la nueva ley está
destinada a modernizar y al desarrollo de la
policía de Nicaragua y muchos de los
cambios realizados en el ámbito policial
desde que se aprobó la actual ley de 2006,
como el proactivo, preventivo modelo
comunitario y consolidado. La nueva ley
extiende los años de servicio de oficiales

de oficiales retirados. También permite la

dirección de contrainteligencia y el
Departamento de policía turística, entre
otros.
El embajador alemán en Nicaragua;
Karl-Otto König se reunió con René Núñez
de la Asamblea Nacional nicaragüense la
semana pasada para informarle que
Alemania estaba muy interesado en ayudar
con el proyecto del canal y que una
delegación de políticos del partido
socialdemócrata de Alemania, llegará este
mes para analizar los lugares de interés
económicos para invertir. König fue directo
y dijo a Núñez que Alemania sigue teniendo
una imagen de los años 80 de Nicaragua.
König sugiere que la principal tarea de
Nicaragua es globalizar su imagen a través
de una mayor apertura y transparencia a los
extranjeros y participar en las principales
ferias si desea atraer el interés de
empresarios de la industria alemana.

The National Police in the Department of Rivas have an operation
running until the 23rd of July that is aimed at reducing traffic
accidents. High Commissioner Sergio Gutiérrez, Chief of the Rivas
police has assigned sixty of his officers to police the worst ten
accident “black spots” in his district. The plan is to inform drivers in
relation to the traffic law in an effort to reduce accidents and thereby
casualties. Gutiérrez said “Other than the fine and/or detention of
someone who violates the Road Traffic Act, we want to convince
them that they need to comply with the Road Traffic Act so as not to
jeopardize their life, or the life of a passenger or anyone using the
road.” The stretch of the Pan American Highway that goes through
Rivas has claimed seven lives so far this year and even the slow pace
of Ometepe was not enough to prevent three fatal accidents
occurring. Gutiérrez confirmed that there were 14,000 motorcycles
registered in the Department of Rivas and crash helmet use will be
one of the things they will be looking for at the 10 black spots.
An early morning operation last Thursday by the National Police
busted a Nandaime man with 55 packets of cocaine in a hidden
compartment under the bed of his truck which bore a Managua plate.
The 37 year old driver of the truck was the only person arrested in the
operation (at kilometer 67 of the Pan American highway from Rivas
to Nandaime) and now faces charges of drug trafficking. Police Drug
Squad agents were on the scene to provide their expertise in the
proper process. One witness that passed the scene reported to Del Sur
News that when they passed the scene, the entire truck box was off the
vehicle and was sat on the road next to the truck and the 55 packets
were neatly organized in rows and being photographed for evidence.
Ervin Antonio Velásquez López, a 23 year old Army Sergeant was
killed early last Saturday evening when a gang of five drunks
attacked his outpost in the Municipality of Cárdenas, in the
Department of Rivas. The soldier had been looking for the gang
after his army post had been stoned. However, they ambushed him,
attacked him and took his weapon before shooting him three times.
At 11:50pm that night, the five suspects, still under the influence of
alcohol, were all in custody. An army spokesman said that they had
wounded one suspect during the arrests and he was admitted to
Hospital in Rivas. Velásquez López was a native of San Luis de
Santo Domingo in the Municipality of Masatepe, Masaya.
The head of the Granada Market Merchants Association,
Margarita Jarquín, is not happy with the progress being made to deal
with the problem of street kids, glue sniffers and petty thieves that
roam the streets, parks, plazas and in particular La Calzada (the
main tourist avenue that has had thousands of dollars spent on it in
order to attract tourism). Gangs of several of these kids are to be
found wandering the alleys of the market while sniffing glue. They
beg for food but also harass vendors by stealing small items, shoes,
clothes and food that they can sell or trade for glue. The Police in
Granada have conducted operations to establish who is selling the
glue, however without any measurable success. Another problem is
the lack of any type of rehabilitation center for these glue sniffers. It
is left up to non-governmental agencies run by people like Fabiola
Rodezno from the Casa Hogar Amanecer of the Catholic Church in
Granada. She runs a center that performs outpatient work with
children addicted to inhalants. Some are given school classes as they
are illiterate or have quit school. They offer crafts and recreational
activities. They get breakfast and lunch but then go back out of the
street again. It is estimated that 40 children aged 5 to 16 years are
addicted to glue and other drugs.

La policía nacional en el Departamento de Rivas tiene una operación en
funcionamiento hasta el 23 de julio que está destinada a reducir los accidentes
de tráfico. El Alto Comisionado Sergio Gutiérrez, jefe de la policía de Rivas ha
asignado sesenta de sus oficiales policías para vigilar los peores diez "puntos
negros" en accidente de su distrito. El plan es para informar a conductores en lo
referente a la ley de tránsito en un esfuerzo por reducir los accidentes y de tal
modo las víctimas. Gutiérrez dijo que "Aparte de la multa o detención de una
persona que viole la ley de tráfico, queremos convencerles de que tienen que
cumplir con la ley de tráfico de la carretera para no poner en peligro su vida o la
vida de un pasajero o cualquier persona que use la calle". El tramo de la carretera
Panamericana que atraviesa Rivas ha cobrado siete vidas hasta ahora este año y
ni siquiera el lento ritmo de Ometepe no fue suficiente para evitar tres
accidentes fatales ocurridos. Gutiérrez confirmó que hubo 14.000 motocicletas
registradas en el Departamento de Rivas y el uso del casco será una de las cosas
que estarán buscando en los 10 puntos negros.
Una operación de madrugada el jueves pasado por la policía nacional había
arrestado a un hombre de Nandaime con 55 paquetes de cocaína que llevaba en
un compartimento oculto debajo en la cama de su camioneta con placa de
Managua. El conductor de la camioneta de 37 años de edad fue el único detenido
en la operación (en el kilómetro 67 de la Panamericana carretera de Rivas a
Nandaime) y ahora enfrenta cargos de narcotráfico. Los agentes de narcóticos
de la policía estaban en la escena para ofrecer su experiencia en el proceso
adecuado. Uno de los testigos que pasaron en la escena informó que Del Sur
News que cuando pasaron por el escenario, la caja del carro entero estaba fuera
del vehículo y estaba en la carretera junto a la camioneta y los 55 paquetes
cuidadosamente fueron organizados en filas y fueron fotografiados para la
evidencia.
Ervin Antonio Velásquez López, un sargento del ejército de 23 años fue
asesinado temprano en la noche del pasado sábado cuando una banda de cinco
borrachos atacaron su puesto en el municipio de Cárdenas, en el Departamento

La directora de la Asociación de Comerciantes del Mercado de Granada,
Margarita Jarquín, no está feliz con los progresos realizados para lidiar con el
problema de niños de la calle, los huele pegamento y ladronzuelos que vagan
por las calles, parques, plazas y en particular en la calle La Calzada (la avenida
principal turística que ha tenido miles de dólares invertidos en ella con el fin de
atraer al turismo). Las pandillas de varios de estos niños se encuentran vagando
por las callejuelas del mercado mientras huelen pegamento. Ellos no solo piden
comida sino también acosan a los vendedores con pequeños robos, como
zapatos, ropa y alimentos que pueden vender o intercambiar por pegamento. La
policía de Granada ha llevado a cabo operaciones para establecer quién está
vendiendo el pegamento, sin embargo sin ningún éxito medible. Otro problema
es la falta de cualquier tipo de centro de rehabilitación para estos niños huele
pegamento. Los organismos no gubernamentales dirigidos por gente como
Fabiola Rodezno de la Casa Hogar Amanecer de la iglesia católica en Granada.
Ella dirige un centro que realiza un trabajo para pacientes ambulatorios con
niños adictos a los inhalantes. Algunos reciben clases por que son analfabetos o
han abandonado la escuela. Ofrecen artesanías y actividades recreativas. Ellos
consiguen el desayuno y el almuerzo pero luego vuelven a la calle. Se estima
que 40 niños de entre 5 y 16 años son adictos al pegamento y otras drogas.

The inhabitants of the community of El Oro located one
kilometer east of San Juan del Sur reported on June 17th
that for the last two months, they have been without
public lighting at strategic locations (such as the bridge,
the baseball diamond and the river crossing). The
inhabitants of EL Oro travel up to a kilometer through
those dangerous places without any light.
Luis Tenorio, a local resident commented that Dissur
teams have come to check the lamps but they say that
there is no solution to the problem. He asked Dissur, the
company that distributes the electricity to resolve the
problem as (like everyone) they pay for the street light
service as part of their electricity bill. Tenorio also
appealed to the municipality to put pressure on Dissur to
repair these fixtures before problems occur at night.
Juan Francisco Matamoros, an official of the
Municipality of San Juan del Sur, responsible for
examining the operation of street lighting, explained that
the case of the El Oro Street lights was already reviewed
but that the team Dissur sends out need equipment to
reach the height of the poles and repair the lights.

Los pobladores de la comunidad El Oro localizada a un
kilómetro al este de San Juan del Sur informaron el
pasado 17 de junio que tienen unos dos meses de estar sin
alumbrado público en lugares estratégicos, tales como el
puente, en el cuadro de béisbol y el paso del río, los
habitantes del Oro transitan hasta un kilómetro por esos
lugares peligrosos sin luz.
Luis Tenorio (Habitante de El Oro), comentó que las
cuadrillas de Dissur han llegado a revisar las lámparas,
pero dicen que no hay solución al problema, pidió a la
empresa distribuidora de energía, que resuelvan el
problema, en los recibos cobran el alumbrado público
igualmente hizo un llamado a la municipalidad para que
obligue a DISSUR que instalen esas luminarias antes
que ocurra un problema por las noches.
Juan Francisco Matamoros, funcionario de la
municipalidad de San Juan del Sur, responsable de
examinar el buen funcionamiento del alumbrado
público, explicó que ya se revisó el caso de las
luminarias de la comunidad del Oro, pero que la
cuadrilla necesita un equipo con más capacidad para

Nicaragua is the first country in the Central
American region to have equipment that
can detect the Chikungunya virus. The
thermo cycler will be used to detect the
virus in patients suspected of being
infected with Chikungunya in the wake of
1,300 confirmed cases in El Salvador (in
the Caribbean, there were over 4,500
confirmed cases up to last week).

With no reported cases in Nicaragua as
we go to press, the virus is knocking on
our door and MINSA (The Ministry of
Health) is prepared for its inevitable
arrival with a health alert and the
implementation of a plan to cut a “fire
break” across the country (at the
borders) by fumigation and an
aggressive abatement program. Dr.
Sonia Castro, Head of the Ministry of
Health (MoH) reminded Nicaraguans
that the current health warning is to
protect their lives and the country's
governmental authorities have been
instructed to take appropriate measures
to prevent the introduction of the
Chikungunya Virus.

In Costa Rica a woman recently back
from in the Dominican Republic was
detected with the virus. Meanwhile in
the rest of Central America, El Salvador
is the most affected with 1,300
confirmed cases. In the Caribbean, the
Dominican Republic, Haiti, Martinique,
Guadeloupe, Cuba and Venezuela all
have reported cases of the virus. The
Pan American Health Organization
(PAHO) has 4,721 confirmed cases
reported in The Americas up to the end
of June.
NOTE: Travel related cases have begun
to crop up in the United States, namely
Florida and North Carolina.

The Pan American Health Organization
(PAHO) helped Nicaragua acquire the $ US
50,000 machine which can identify the
virus in the first five days of infection. The
machine can test up to 90 patients per day
and results are known within 4 hours. The
machine puts test materials through a
program of specific cycles at different
temperatures for different times and can
change those temperatures in a matter of
seconds, repeating the cycle tens of times.
It is the same machine used in DNA
profiling, detecting foreign organisms in
food and detecting many different
diseases in blood samples.
Ciclador Térmico
Nicaragua es el primer país en la región
centroamericana que tiene un equipo que
pueda detectar el virus Chikungunya. El
ciclador térmico se utiliza para detectar el
virus en pacientes sospechosos de estar
infectados con el Chikungunya en la estela
de 1.300 casos confirmados en El Salvador
(en el Caribe, hubo más de 4.500 casos
confirmados hasta la semana pasada).
La Organización Panamericana de la Salud
(OPS), ayudó a Nicaragua a adquirir los $
50. 000 para la máquina que puede
identificar el virus en los primeros cinco
días de la infección. La máquina puede
probar hasta 90 pacientes al día y tiene los
resultados en un plazo de 4 horas. La
máquina pone los materiales de ensayo a
través de un programa de ciclos
específicos a diferentes temperaturas
durante diferentes tiempos y puede
cambiar las temperaturas en cuestión de
segundos, repitiendo las decenas de veces
del ciclo. Es la misma máquina que se
utiliza en el análisis de ADN, la detección
de organismos extraños en los alimentos y
la detección de muchas enfermedades
diferentes en muestras de sangre.

Chikungunya (Chik-v) - A Mosquito-borne viral disease
transmitted to humans by infected mosquitoes and first
identified in Tanzania in 1952.
Chikungunya (Chik-v) – Es una enfermedad viral transmitida por el
mosquito que se transmite a los humanos por piquetes de mosquitos
infectados y primeramente identificado en Tanzania en 1952.
Transmission - Human to human by the bites of infected
female mosquitoes, most commonly the same as the dengue
carriers; Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. They are active in
daylight, in particular early morning and late afternoon.
Typically onset of the illness occurs between 4 & 8 days but can
be 2 to 12 days.
La transmisión – De humano a humano por la picadura de mosquitos
hembra infectados, por lo general el mismo que los portadores de dengue;
Aedes aegypti y Aedes albopictus. Son activos durante el día,
especialmente por la mañana temprano y por la tarde. Normalmente el
comienzo de la enfermedad se produce entre cuatro y ocho días después de
la picadura, pero puede estar en el rango de dos a 12 días.
Symptoms – Fever, severe joint pain, muscle pain, headache,
nausea, fatigue and rash. Chik-v is characterized by an abrupt
onset of fever, most often with joint pain, sometimes muscle
pain, headache, nausea, fatigue and rash.
Síntomas - Fiebre, dolor severo en las articulaciones, dolor muscular,
dolor de cabeza, náuseas, fatiga y erupción cutánea. Chikungunya-Chik-v
se caracteriza por la aparición repentina de fiebre, lo más a menudo con
dolor en las articulaciones, a veces dolor muscular, dolor de cabeza,
náuseas, fatiga y erupción cutánea.
Diagnosis – A serological test such may confirm the presence
of chik-v antibodies in the blood.
Recovery – For most patients a full recovery can be expected.
The joint pain can be debilitating for a few days however; in
some cases joint pain may persist for several months, or even
years. Rare cases of sight, neurological, heart and
gastrointestinal problems have been reported. Serious
complications are rare older people can be, the disease can
contribute to the cause of death. Often symptoms in infected
individuals are mild and the infection may go unrecognized, or
be misdiagnosed in areas where dengue occurs.
Cure - Like dengue (the virus it often gets confused with), there
is no cure for the disease, however symptoms can be relieved.
Treatment- No specific antiviral drug treatment exists;
therefore treatment is aimed at relieving the symptoms,
including the joint pain using anti-pyretics, optimal analgesics
and fluids.
Diagnóstico - Una prueba serológica tal puede confirmar la presencia de
anticuerpos chik-v en la sangre.
Recuperación - Para la mayoría de los pacientes se puede esperar una
recuperación completa. El dolor en las articulaciones puede ser debilitante
por unos pocos días, sin embargo; en algunos casos, el dolor en las
articulaciones puede persistir durante varios meses o incluso años. Se han
reportado casos raros en la vista, neurológica, problemas cardíacos y
gastrointestinales. Las complicaciones son raras y en las personas
mayores y pueden ser graves, la enfermedad puede contribuir a la causa de
la muerte. A menudo, los síntomas en los individuos infectados son leves y
la infección pueden pasar desapercibidas o ser mal diagnosticados en las

Prevention and Control – As with Dengue, the proximity of
mosquito vector breeding sites to human habitation is a
significant risk factor for chik-v and other diseases. Waterfilled containers support the breeding of these mosquitoes.
During outbreaks insecticides may be sprayed to kill flying
mosquitoes and other safe chemicals should be used in and
around water containers where the mosquitoes land and also
where the immature larvae are growing. The near impossible
goal not getting bitten can be helped by minimizing skin
exposure (wearing long sleeves and pants and ensuring rooms
are fitted with screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering),
using repellents (in accordance with manufacturer's
instructions), insecticide treated mosquito nets as well as
mosquito coils or other insecticide vaporizers to reduce indoor
biting.
Prevención y control - La proximidad de los criaderos de mosquitos
vectores de la habitación humana es un factor de riesgo significativo para
chik-v y otras enfermedades. Los recipientes llenos de agua apoyan la cría
de estos mosquitos. Durante los brotes pueden rociar insecticidas para
matar a los mosquitos que vuelan y otros productos químicos de seguridad

The Carriers;
Ae. aegypti is found in the tropics and sub-tropics and is more
closely associated with human habitation and uses indoor
breeding sites such as; flower vases, water storage vessels and
concrete water tanks in bathrooms as well as the same artificial
outdoor habitats.
Ae. albopictus also occurs in temperate and even cold
temperate regions and has spread from Asia to become
established in areas of Africa, Europe and the Americas. Ae.
albopictus thrives in a wider range of water-filled breeding sites
than does Ae. Aegypti. This includes coconut husks, cocoa
pods, bamboo stumps, tree holes and rock pools, in addition to
artificial containers such as old tires and flower pot saucer.
Los transportistas;
Aedes aegypti se encuentra en los trópicos y sub trópicos y está más
estrechamente relacionado con la vida humana y utiliza los sitios de
reproducción en el interior, tales como; floreros, recipientes de
almacenamiento de agua y tanques de agua de cemento en los baños, así

San Juan del Sur ended a month of
celebration of its Patron Saint (Saint John the
Baptist) with festivities that bring the
community together. Special thanks to the
Catholic Church, the National Police, the
Organizing Committee's, the 8 girls and their
mothers and other relatives who participated
in the election of the Queen of our Fiestas
Patronales 2014 contest.
This Municipal Government ratifies the
commitment to continue to promote the
culture, tradition, history and religion of San
Juan del Sur, and invites you to participate in
the celebration of the Co-Patrona of San
Juan del Sur; The Virgen del Carmen, Virgin
of fishermen and those who make their
living on the high seas.
Special Coverage by Canal 13 of the
Hípica Nacional SjdS 2014
With the aim of promoting our HÍPICA, and
San Juan del Sur as a tourist destination, the
Municipal Government established a
strategy which guaranteed television
coverage of the event. The special program
will air on Sunday, July 6th, in the
afternoon, after the baseball game – on
Viva Nicaragua, Channel 13.
Festivities of the Fishermen of
San Juan de Sur
With Bullfighting and music, San Juan del
Sur will welcome the festivities in Honor of
the Co-Patron of this municipality, la Virgen
del Carmen. The action will start on Sunday
July 6th with the inaugural activities of the
festivities of the sea. In the morning, the
traditional descent of the image of the Virgin
in the parish of the municipality, a parade
around the main streets of the city in a
procession with fishermen and the
population in general, ending at the Bay,
where she will be on display.
At 10am on the 6th there will be a fair with
products from the sea.
At 3 o'clock in the afternoon at the Rodeo
Grounds on the edge of town will be the
crowning of the “Novia of the Bullfighting
Festivals” (Fiestas Taurinas) - Miss Gloria
Pérez. This will be followed by the
bullfighting and special contests.
The Virgen del Carmen celebrations will
culminate in the procession on the water on
the 16th July. More next week.

5 Communities of San Juan del Sur benefited from the
'Live Better' Project
The communities of Bastón, Las Delicias, Capulín, Escamequita and Bernardino benefitted
from the 'Live Better' project supported by the Fund for Governance and Development,
provided by Cooperative of Art CEIBO RL, who since 2012, through art, has promoted the
right of children, adolescents and youth of San Juan del Sur to education, health and to live in
a safe and healthy environment.
It has promoted self-management in the community by forming 5 cabinets of culture and
thus continues to promote dance groups, theatre and painting.
Cooperative of Art CEIBO RL sponsored Bastón, Las Delicias and Capulín in the creation of
rural community enterprises to offer tourist services such as; hiking, crafts and food services.
Culture Cabinets have undergone a process of training that has allowed them to identify
potential resources that they could transform into tourist products or services to generate
income with the young people and in this way contribute to the development of their areas,
providing a better quality of life.
On Friday 27th and Saturday June 28th the Cooperative of Art CEIBO RL presented a
package of promotional items in the communities of El Capulín, Las Delicias and El Bastón
that will allow them to promote themselves as tourist businesses. There was also a tour of the
communities to understand their tourism resources they have already identified in the
training process. The necessary coordination to certify the businesses is underway and local
guides will be responsible for these business initiatives. They will also have a website to
promote the tourist offers.

5 Comunidades de San Juan del Sur beneficiadas
con el proyecto “Vivamos Mejor”
Las comunidades del Bastón, Las Delicias, Capulín, Escamequita y Bernardino fueron
beneficiadas con el proyecto “Vivamos Mejor” financiado por el Fondo para la
Gobernabilidad y el Desarrollo, ejecutado por la Cooperativa de Arte CEIBO RL, desde el
año 2012, se ha promovido el derecho a la educación, salud y a vivir en un medio ambiente
sano y saludable de la niñez, adolescencia y juventud de San Juan del Sur por medio del Arte.
Se promovió la autogestión comunitaria conformando 5 Gabinetes de Cultura y así
continuar promocionado los grupos de danza, teatro, pintura y danza formados por el
proyecto.
La Cooperativa de Arte CEIBO RL, ha acompañado y apoyado a las comunidades; El
Bastón, Las Delicias y el Capulín, en la creación de empresas rurales comunitarias para
ofrecer servicios turísticos de senderismo, artesanías y alimentos propios del sector. Los
Gabinetes de Cultura han experimentado un proceso de capacitaciones que les ha permitido
identificar sus recursos potenciales que podrían transformar en ofertas o productos turísticos
para crear generación de ingresos con los jóvenes y de esta forma contribuir con el desarrollo
de sus localidades aportando una mejor calidad de vida.
El viernes 27 y sábado 28 de junio la Cooperativa de Arte CEIBO RL, hizo entrega de un
paquete de visibilidad en las comunidades “El Capulín”, “Las Delicias” y “El Bastón” que
les permitirá promocionarse como empresas turísticas. También se realizó un recorrido por
estas comunidades para conocer sus recursos turísticos ya identificados en el proceso de
capacitación y se está realizando las coordinaciones necesarias para certificar las empresas y
a los guías originarios del lugar que serán los responsables estas iniciativas empresariales.
Además tendrán una página Web para promocionar sus ofertas turísticas.

Aprende Ingles con el
Proyecto Barrio Planta GRATIS
La Fundación Proyecto Barrio Planta te
informa que ya están abiertas las matrículas
para la las clases de inglés para la segunda
mitad del 2014 para niños. Las clases inician
el día 14 de julio y duran hasta noviembre.
Las matrículas se estarán efectuando
únicamente en las oficinas de BPP y se
atenderá en horarios de oficina de 8:30am
hasta 5:30pm de lunes a viernes. Tenemos
dos niveles de ingles para niños de 4 hasta 7
años, cinco niveles de ingles para niños de 8
hasta 17años. También, estamos iniciando
una clase nueva de nivel uno para
principiantes que comienza a las 4 de la
tarde para niños en escuelita.
Hay espacio para 150 niños. También
ofrecemos clases de computación para niños
y adultos y clases de arte, manualidades,
danza y otras actividades para niños. Los
niños que participan en estas actividades y
niños del primer semestre garantizarán su
cupo. Para mas información de estas
actividades, pregunta en la oficina. Ven y
reserva tu cupo, los primeros en llegar
también garantizarán su cupo, te esperamos.

Las Pampas derrotó a Los Cachorros a primera hora 4x3 y a segunda hora 6x4 en el campo de
El Valle, en La Cuesta a primera hora El Bastón derrotó 4x0 a Los Delfines y a segunda hora
Los Delfines derrotaron 8x6 a El Bastón. Los partidos este sábado 5 de julio serán a las 9:00
am El Bastón recibe a Los Delfines y Los Cachorros reciben a Las Pampas en el campo de El

BPP registrations for the English classes for
the second half of 2014 for children have
begun. Classes begin on 14th July and last
until November. Registrations only in BPP

through Friday. Two levels of English for
children from 4 up to 7 years, five levels of
English for 8 to 17. Also, we are initiating a
new level-one for beginners starting at 4pm
in the afternoon for children in school.
