Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Recognize the Dignity of your Nature
From a sermon by Saint Leo the Great, pope (d. 461)
Our Lord Jesus Christ, born true man without ever
ceasing to be true God, began in his person a new
creation and by the manner of his birth gave man a
spiritual origin. What mind can grasp this mystery, what
tongue can fittingly recount this gift of love? Guilt
becomes innocence, old becomes new, strangers are
adopted and outsiders are made heirs. Rouse yourself,
man, and recognize the dignity of your nature.
Remember that you were made in God’s image; though
corrupted in Adam, that image has been restored in
Christ.
Use creatures as they should be used: the earth, the sea,
the sky, the air, the springs and the rivers. Give praise
and glory to their Creator for all that you find beautiful
and wonderful in them. See with your bodily eyes the
light that shines on earth, but embrace with your whole
soul and all your affections the true light which
enlightens every man who comes into this world.
Speaking of this light the prophet said: Draw close to
him and let his light shine upon you and your face will
not blush with shame. If we are indeed the temple of God
and if the Spirit of God lives in us, then what every
believer has within himself is greater than what he
admires in the skies.
Our words and exhortations are not intended to make you
disdain God’s works or think there is anything contrary
to your faith in creation, for the good God has himself
made all things good. What we do ask is that you use
reasonably and with moderation all the marvelous
creatures which adorn this world; as the Apostle says:
The things that are seen are transient but the things that
are unseen are eternal.
For we are born in the present only to be reborn in the
future. Our attachment, therefore, should not be to the
transitory; instead, we must be intent upon the eternal.
Let us think of how divine grace has transformed our
earthly natures so that we may contemplate more closely
our heavenly hope. We hear the Apostle say: You are
dead and your life is hidden with Christ in God. But
when Christ you life appears, then you will also appear
in glory with him, who lives and reigns with the Father
and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.
St. Leo, one of the early Church Fathers, was Pope in the
middle of the 5th century and is especially renowned for
his preaching on the mystery of the incarnation and its
meaning for human dignity. This excerpt from one of his
sermons (Sermo 7 in Nativitate Domini, 2.6; PL 54, 217218, 220-221) is used in the Roman Office of Readings
for Friday of the 5th week in ordinary time with the
accompanying biblical reading of Galatians 5;1-25.

Reconocer la dignidad de tu naturaleza
De un sermón de San León Magno, Papa (m. 461)
Nuestro Señor Jesucristo, nacido verdadero hombre sin
dejar de ser verdadero Dios, se inició en su persona una
nueva creación y por la forma de su nacimiento le dio al
hombre un origen espiritual. ¿Que mente puede captar
este misterio, que lengua puede relatar adecuadamente
este regalo de amor? La culpa se convierte en la inocencia, lo viejo llega a ser nuevo, los extranjeros son adoptados y los de afuera se hacen herederos. Despierta, hombre, y reconocer la dignidad de tu naturaleza. Recuerda
que fuiste creado a la imagen de Dios, aunque corrompida en Adán, la imagen ha sido restaurada en Cristo.
Utiliza las criaturas, ya que se deben utilizar: la tierra, el
mar, el cielo, el aire, las aguas y los ríos. Da alabanza y
gloria a tu Creador por todo lo que encuentras hermoso y
maravilloso en ellos. Ver con los ojos corporales, la luz
que brilla en la tierra, pero abraza con toda tu alma y todo
tu afecto la luz verdadera que ilumina a todo hombre que
viene a este mundo. Hablando de este punto de vista, el
profeta dijo: acércate a él y deja que su luz brille sobre ti
y tu rostro no se avergonzará. Si realmente somos el templo de Dios, y si el Espíritu de Dios vive en nosotros, entonces lo que todo creyente tiene dentro de sí mismo es
más grande que lo que admira en los cielos.
Nuestras palabras y exhortaciones no tienen la intención
de hacer que desprecien las obras de Dios, o piensen que
hay algo contrario a la fe en la creación, por el bien que
Dios mismo ha hecho todas las cosas bien. Lo que pedimos es que usted utilize razonable y con moderación a
todas las criaturas maravillosas que adornan este mundo,

San León, uno de los Padres de la Iglesia, fue el Papa en
el medio del siglo quinto, y es especialmente conocido
por su predicación sobre el misterio de la encarnación y
de su significado para la dignidad humana. Este extracto

God himself wishes to share this path with us and to offer us
his gaze so that we might see the light within it. Christ is the
one who, having endured suffering, is “the pioneer and perfecter of our faith” (Heb 12:2).”
PRAYING THROUGH MARY FOR VOCATIONS
Families that attend the 8:00 am, 10:00 am, 12:00 noon
and 2:00 p.m. Sunday Masses, can register to take a Pilgrim Statue of the Blessed Mother into their homes. They
commit themselves to pray for one week the Rosary as a
family, for an increase in the harvest of vocations to religious life and the Priesthood. If you want to host the
Blessed Mother into your home please register at the Office. *Please Pick up and Return the Pilgrim Statue at
