Sponsorship Kit 2015 What is a Dia San Jose? Dia De Los Muertos or Day of the Dead is a 3000 year old tradition celebrated in Mexico and other Latin American Countries. Although called Day of The Dead, it is a celebration of life. The holiday is celebrated in central and southern Mexico on November 1 & 2. Dia De Los Muertos coincides with the Catholic holiday, All Soul's & All Saint’s Day, indigenous people have combined this with their own ancient beliefs of honoring their deceased loved ones. Today the elements of the tradition remain with large segments of the US Latino demographic gathering of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. The tradition includes the belief that the gates of heaven are opened at midnight on October 31, and the spirits of all deceased children (angelitos) are allowed to reunite with their families for 24 hours. On November 2, the spirits of the adults come down to enjoy the festivities that are prepared for them. San José has a long tradition of celebrating Dia De Los Muertos. Dia San José provides a fresh new aesthetic to the celebration by highlighting not only the traditional but creating new ones.
