Baptism of Christ by Trevisani Page 2 The Baptism of the Lord (Cycle C) Pastor’s Corner Today we celebrate the feast of the baptism of the Lord. With His baptism, Jesus starts His public life. He starts to fulfill what God promised in the first reading. Jesus teaches what it means to be faithful to God by loving the poor, forgiving those who have injured us, loving with all our hearts. He calls us to a conversion of heart so that we may live only for God. Like Christ, we have been chosen by God. In baptism we have been signed with holy oil so that we may preach the kingdom of justice and give witness to our faith. We have received the Holy Spirit and in a very special way we are other christs, anointed ones, in today’s world. In a certain way, today’s first reading explains what we as Christians do through baptism. How do we carry this out in our daily life? Everything we do must have Christ’s life as its foundation. At home, at work, in the street or in school, among friends, enemies, relatives and foreigners, we are Christ’s light and witnesses. P. When we truly believe that all we have is a gift from God, then we must be willing to give up some things so that we can share our blessings as God intended. Living a stewardship lifestyle means not only being responsible for our own life, but the lives of others as well. Jesus teaches us that we are called to serve one another. Sacrifice is not a word that many people like to hear. We think it means that we must give up something that we want. However, the literal meaning of sacrifice is “to make holy,” from the words of “sacer” meaning sacred and “facere” meaning to make. In other words, we make our lives holy by sharing our gifts in the service of God. Soon we will be asking you to make a contribution to this year’s ABCD, please take this time to prayerfully consider what sacrificial gift you will be able to place at God’s service. If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all. Mark 9:35. Marcos 9:35. The Baptism of the Lord Page 5 MINISTRIES Ministerios ST. The Baptism of the Lord Page 7 The Jubilee of Mercy /El Jubileo de la Misericordia Overcome Indifference and Win Peace Message of Pope Francis for the World Day of Peace 2016 We continue to trust that 2016 will see us all firmly and confidently engaged, on different levels, in the pursuit of justice and peace. Peace is both God’s gift and a human achievement. As a gift of God, it is entrusted to all men and women, who are called to attain it. Along these same lines, with the present Jubilee of Mercy I want to invite the Church to pray and work so that every Christian will have a humble and compassionate heart, one capable of proclaiming and witnessing to mercy. It is my hope that all of us will learn to “forgive and give”, to become more open “to those living on the outermost fringes of society - fringes which modern society itself creates”, and to refuse to fall into “a humiliating indifference or a monotonous routine which prevents us from discovering what is new! Let us ward off destructive cynicism!” We too, then, are called to make compassion, love, mercy and solidarity a true way of life, a rule of conduct in our relationships with one another. This requires the conversion of our hearts: the grace of God has to turn our hearts of stone into hearts of flesh (cf. Ezek 36:26), open to others in authentic solidarity. For solidarity is much more than a “feeling of vague compassion or shallow distress at the misfortunes of so many people, both near and far”. Solidarity is “a firm and persevering determination to commit oneself to the common good; that is to say to the good of all and of each individual, because we are all really responsible for all”, because compassion flows from fraternity.
