Folleto de la Convención del 2016
44th Annual
NDSC Convention
July 21-24, 2016
JW Marriott Grande Lakes
Orlando, FL
The General Convention
The General Convention is designed to educate parents, other family members and caregivers, as well as medical and education
professionals. General Convention programming includes a mix of large plenary sessions with keynote speakers, along with
more than sixty breakout workshops. The first plenary session will meet on Friday evening, followed by an opening reception and
totally fun dance. All attendees and family members are encouraged to attend.
General Convention attendees will attend breakout workshops over six cycles beginning Friday afternoon. With thirteen
90-minute workshops available during each cycle, you’ll be able to choose the session that’s right for you. To guide you in making
selections, a complete workshop list will be available on our website, our convention mobile app and within the Souvenir Journal
that you’ll receive when you arrive onsite. (You’ll choose as you go - no need to pre-register for these breakout sessions.)
Most General Convention workshops will be recorded, and made available to all general convention attendees a few weeks after
the convention. “This is a great way to listen to those sessions you are unable to attend in person. (After all, you can only be in one
place at a time!)”
Pre-Conference Sessions
These valuable sessions presented by world renowned speakers
offer the most comprehensive learning opportunity of the
weekend. They are designed for those interested in going in-depth
on a specific topic. Each session is 4-hours long and will begin on
Friday morning at 8:00 a.m. These sessions are not recorded and
do require pre-registration with an additional fee. Check out the
2016 pre-conference line-up on pages 4 and 5 of this brochure and
on our website.
Sharing Sessions
Sharing Sessions take place on Friday from 1:30 - 2:45 p.m. and
are facilitated by seasoned parents. They encourage participants
to connect informally around common age groups and interests,
and share similar needs, joys, concerns, resources and strategies.
We recommend that parents attend these sessions without their
children in order to share their concerns freely.
Kids’ Camp
The educational playground of the
convention, Kids’ Camp was created
for children ages 6 months to 14 years
who can participate in activities
while their parents are attending
workshops. The camp is offered in
five separate sessions. All children
must be pre-registered. Space is
limited, so register early.
Youth and Adults Conference
Attendees must be 15 years old by July 21, 2016.
Considered “the heart and soul of the Convention weekend,” the
annual Youth and Adults (Y&A) Conference is a fun, empowering,
enriching and safe environment for attendees with Down
syndrome age 15 and up.
The Y&A Conference is planned and presented by self-advocates.
The event begins with a kick-off party on Friday afternoon,
followed by workshops, open mic sessions, empower hour and
panel presentations on Saturday (lunch is not included). The Y&A
Conference closes on Sunday with the popular talent show, but
not before attendees elect one of their peers to serve on the NDSC
Board of Directors.
Registration for the Y&A Conference will close when capacity is
reached, or June 10—whichever comes first. . Please note that Y&A
Conference registration is not available on site. We encourage
interested attendees to register early, as we typically reach capacity
before the deadline date.
Brothers and Sisters Conference
For those entering 4th through 12th grade in 2016-17.
The sibling connection is most often the longest-lasting
family relationship attendees have. As a result, it’s important
that brothers and sisters feel supported and know how to
advocate for their sibling with DS.
The B&S Conference begins with a Get Acquainted Session on
Friday afternoon. The group meets all day Saturday (including
lunch) and will break at day’s end concurrent with the General
Convention and Y&A Conference. On Sunday, B&S attendees
will go offsite to explore a local Orlando attraction.
Social Events and Other Activities
What would an NDSC Convention be without a dance or two?
All attendees are invited to
join Friday night’s Opening
Reception and 321Dance™!
following the Opening
Plenary Session, which will
feature the cast of “Born This
Way”. Saturday evening’s
events include our annual
awards banquet (a ticketed
event), followed by another
dance for all attendees (no
ticket required).
We will also host a vendor
Exhibit Area featuring the
latest books, toys, teaching
and therapy aids, apparel,
software and more.
Don’t miss this opportunity to
hear from the self-advocate cast
of A&E Network’s BORN THIS
WAY, during the Plenary Session
on Friday evening.
Our Film Festival showcases the best films, clips and
documentaries featuring the Down syndrome community.
Screenings take place during the workshop cycles, Friday
through Sunday.

Co-Occurring DS and
Autism Spectrum Disorders
The NDSC cares deeply about serving the needs
of all families, including those with loved ones
with co-occurring DS and autism (DS-ASD),
autism-like behaviors or complex medical
needs. In collaboration with the DSAutism Connection, the NDSC will again
offer a specially-designed workshop
track to meet the needs of these families.
Experts in the field of DS-ASD will be
presenting on important issues and will
be available to answer questions and
provide much needed support.

2016 Pre-Conference Sessions
Our Pre-Conference sessions take your learning to another level. These 4-hour sessions enable you to dig deeper into
one specific topic with world renowned speakers. While eight sessions are offered, you’ll choose just one and spend
the entire morning focusing on the single subject of interest to you.
The sessions are structured to share best practices and proven “how to” strategies, while providing research-based
content. All sessions will include time for Q & A, and coffee and pastries will be provided. Separate registration is
required. Session handouts will only be issued to the person registered for that session. Space is limited in some
sessions, so register early. On-site registration cannot be guaranteed. Read the complete session descriptions and
speaker bios on our website.

PRE-CON C
Let’s Get Started! Helping Your
Child Develop Speech and
Language From Sounds to Words to
Conversation
Shake it Off… Effective, Relatable
Strategies to Help Improve
Behavior at all Ages and Stages
Libby Kumin, PhD, CCC-SLP, Professor of
Speech-Language Pathology and Author, Loyola University,
Baltimore, MD
What are the differences between communication, language and
speech? What prepares your child to speak? How does your child
progress from sounds to words to conversation? Dr. Kumin will
answer these questions and give parents strategies and activities
for developing communication and language skills in children
with DS from birth to first grade. Dr. Kumin will also describe a
model for classifying the different types of language that your
child needs to master for school and techniques for identifying
and working on those skills. We will also discuss effective
strategies for working with IFSP teams and speech language
pathologists in preschool and early elementary school settings
through the IEP process.
PRE-CON B
Setting the Stage for Effective
Education
Dana L. Halle, JD, Executive Director, Down
Syndrome Foundation of Orange County, Vice
President, Education and Outreach, Down
Syndrome Education USA, NDSC Board Member, son with DS,
Orange County, CA
Every student deserves an effective education, yet obtaining
one can be challenging. In this session, Ms. Halle will explore
how to make changes to curriculum, environment, instruction,
and assessment to improve educational outcomes. She will also
address how to create and implement an effective educational
plan.
The NDSC is now partnering with the Learning Program. Stop by
the NDSC table onsite to hear how NDSC members and convention
attendees can sign up for this program.
Stacy Taylor, MA, BCBA, President/Clinical
Director of Advance Behavior & Learning,
daughter with DS, Oviedo, FL
Disponible con interpretación simultánea al español.
Behavior can be frustrating, but the good news is that there is
a science to learning and behavior that can help parents learn
how to better address any behavioral concerns no matter what
age or stage their child is in. These strategies don’t have to be
complex or cumbersome. Some tips involve prevention, some
focus more on effective consequences and, of course, we always
want to focus on teaching. Come and learn about new tools for
your behavior toolbox that you can actually
understand and use!
PRE-CON D
Independence Works! Planning,
Affording, and Making it Happen
Hal Wright, CFP®, Special Needs Planning
Consultant, Author, daughter with DS, Centennial, CO
A growing number of adults with Down syndrome in their
twenties are now living independently in the community.
What they are proving is that we have underestimated their
ability to understand their world, to learn and grow, and to
make decisions for themselves. Their willingness and ability
to take responsibility means supported independence is more
affordable than many realize. Mr. Wright will explain how to
create a support network and a plan
of implementation
for supported
independence.
Parents with children
of all ages are
welcome because it
is the children age
8 and under who
may become the 4th
generation of adults
with Down syndrome
to live independently
and escape poverty,
but we have to start
now to create a future
for them.
PRE-CON E
The Joy of Work: How Finding a
Job and Starting a Career Can be
FUN!
George Tilson, Independent Consultant, Career
and Workforce Development, Rockville, MD
There is a job out there for anyone who wants one, regardless of
disability, need for support, or economic vitality of a community.
But more importantly, the journey to a career can be fun and
exciting! This session will teach strategies that families and
jobseekers themselves can use to jumpstart the job search
process and help case managers do a better job. After this
session, participants will understand the importance of the
individual discovery process, how to approach and partner with
businesses, how to negotiate and customize an awesome job
position, and how to stay focused on a career path. Participants
will also walk away with the start of an individualized “Positive
Personal Profile” and a personalized marketing script.
PRE-CON F
When Down Syndrome and
Autism Intersect: Gaining a Better
Understanding of DS-ASD
Margaret Froehlke, RN, BSN, Sarah Hartway,
RN, MS, and Robin Zaborek, all representatives
of the Down Syndrome-Autism Connection,
including two seasoned parents of children
with DS-ASD, Denver, CO
Could it be more than Down syndrome? This
presentation will provide an overview of DSASD for family members who suspect that
a person in their life may have autism or for
those who have already received an autism
diagnosis. This presentation is also valuable
for professionals who want to learn more about
the co-occurrence and how to understand
and help the families in their care. Come and
learn about research findings, recognizing
autistic behaviors, barriers to receiving a proper
evaluation and diagnosis, parents’ emotional
journey, and finding support and inspiration for
that journey.
PRE-CON G
Brothers and Sisters of People with
Down Syndrome: Unique Concerns,
Unique Opportunities
Don Meyer, Director of the Sibling Support
Project, brother with DS, Seattle, WA
Brothers and sisters will likely be in the lives of family members
with Down syndrome longer than anyone. Siblings will be
there after parents are gone and special education services are
a distant memory. Yet, if they are provided with support and
information, they can help their siblings live dignified lives from
childhood to their senior years. Throughout their lives, brothers
and sisters will share many, if not most, of the same concerns
that parents experience, as well as issues that are uniquely
theirs. During this lively, interactive session, participants will
talk about sibs’ issues across the lifespan—the good stuff, the notso-good stuff, and everything in between. In addition, a sibling
panel will share their expertise with participants. Finally, Mr.
Meyer will discuss what parents and service providers can do to
minimize sibs’ concerns and maximize their opportunities.
PRE-CON H
La salud mental de nuestros hijos
es tan importante como la salud
física ¿qué podemos hacer para
prevenir los trastornos mentales?
Beatriz Garvía Peñuelas. Psicóloga especialista
en psicología clínica. Centro Médico Down. Fundación Catalana
Síndrome de Down.
discapacidad, tienen fortalezas y cualidades; tienen puntos

y familiares a asistir.
Estrategias efectivas,
Down.”
Down, Oviedo, FL.
Centro Médico Down. Fundación Catalana Síndrome de
Down. España.
Encuentros para familias de
habla hispana
Consiste
de cinco sesiones separadas. Habrá actividades tales como arte,
manualidades y juegos educativos. Se requiere inscripción y pago
adicional.
No incluye almuerzo.
Talleres Especializados
Talleres Para Hermanos Adultos

Down (SD-ASD)
síndrome de Down y ASD concurrentes, comportamientos parecidos
