JOSEPH 07/03/2016 From the desk of Father Philip The Catholic Spiritual Tradition teaches us that we must walk before God in humility and truth. This may sound very anachronistic to the contemporary culture that tries to control our lives with its liberal agenda and enticing propaganda. It is easy for us to fall into the ways of the world which will not impose any limits on our appetite for pleasure. So it is easier for the younger generation to get into the way of the world. Eventually there will be a strong resistance from the younger people to a spiritual discipline and even a moral discipline which our faith and traditions require of all believers. Given too much into the ways of the world, the young adults will revolt against the disciplinarian parents and the church itself. This is how the world conquers good believers and the church fails to keep them for the Lord. People tend to value worldly interests better than spiritual life. Jesus wants us to walk before Him in truth and to seek Him always in the simplicity of our hearts. The one who walks before Him in truth shall be defended from the attacks of evil, and the truth shall free him / her from seducers and from the slanders of wicked people. When the truth makes us free, we will be truly free and will not care much about the vanities of this world. Then we will frequently pray to the Lord to let His Truth teach us, guard us, and keep us safe to the end. It will free us from all evil affections and badly ordered love. We will find joy to walk with the Lord in great freedom of heart. We have to always remember the Lord’s mercy that made us who we are and what we have. With a deep sense of gratitude to God we will be humble before Him always giving credit to His mercy that makes us prosperous in our lives. The awareness of our unworthiness due to our sinfulness will neither let the pride nor the depression have a hold on us. What really matters will be our desire to please God in all things with a longing for the eternal joy with Him. When we are not genuinely given to following the Lord, when we pretend to have the power and control of everything, we tend to fall into great temptations and sins. It is our self that is deciding our course of life and its activities, not God’s will and His plan for our salvation. We must always fear the judgements of God. We must dread the wrath of the Almighty. We must review how did we offend God and how many good things we have neglected. The words of the Lord are true always. He sees that some carry their devotions only in books, pictures, outward signs and figures. Some carry Him on their lips when there is little of Him in their hearts. With enlightened understanding and purified affections, we must constantly long for everlasting things. We will develop a sense of detachment from the earthly affairs. We can sense the Spirit of Truth speaking within us. He teaches us to despise earthly things and to love those of heaven, to neglect the world and each day and night to desire heaven. We must help our children grow with a love of heaven and the fear of hell. We must help them to understand how important it is to be friends of Jesus to go to heaven. God Bless You! What do you say when you arrive at church and see a font prepared, a baby in the wings, the paschal candle burning? Well, maybe you will say that “we’re having a baptism today,” or maybe you say “we are having a christening.” The proper term is baptism, since that is the name of the sacrament. But the persistent use of “christening” in our culture, probably from due to the influence of the Episcopal Church, is interesting. READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday:Hos 2:16, 17b-18, 21-22; Ps 145:2-9; Mt 9:1826; or, for Independence Day, any readings from the Mass “For Public Needs,” nos. 882-889, or “For Peace and Justice,” nos. 887-891 Hos 8:4-7, 11-13; Ps 115:3-10; 32 38 Baptism, an ancient word, is from the Greek meaning to dip or Tuesday: Wednesday: Hos 10:1-3, 7-8, 12; Ps 105:2-7; Mt 10:1to dunk. Christening is an Old English word that describes perfectly 7Thursday: Hos 11:1-4, 8c-9; Ps 80:2ac, 3b, 15-16; Mt well that more than getting splashed with water, the person being 10:7-15 Fribaptized is being “Christ-ed.” No matter what you call it, there’s day: Hos 14:2-10; Ps 51:3-4, 8-9, 12-14, 17; Mt 10:16always water involved, and then an anointing with chrism—fragrant Saturday: Is olive oil consecrated as a sign of Christ’s presence—poured upon 23 6:1-8; Ps 93:1-2, 5; Mt 10:24-33 Sunthe brow as we say, “As Christ was anointed Priest, Prophet, and day: Dt 30:10-14; Ps 69:14, 17, 30-31, 33-34, 36-37; or King, so may you live always as a member of his body, sharing evPs 19:8-11; Col 1:15-20; Lk 0:25-37 erlasting life.” So, in being Christ-ed, you are conformed to his image, your life is expected to be a retelling of his life in miniature and you—even though you may be squirming or sleeping—are commissioned to be a priest, a prophet, a king. This means that you are called to be one who worships, you are called to speak the truth, you are called to shape the world and exercise right judgment. That is the deepest treasure of our tradition, and every time you gather to celebrate a baptism, you renew your vows precisely so that you can be more “Christ-ed.” No matter what vocabulary you assign to the liturgy, Retrouvaille the key is transformation of the human person in the community of the Body of Christ.—Rev. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
