© Proyecto Infancia Handkerchief -Télé-Lumière (SIGNIS Lebanon) was able to integrate the handkerchief project with the Belgium Embassy, schools and NGOs in Beirut, and they were displayed in the biggest event for 2000 children, in front of the Parliament building, with representatives from the government and the Parliament. All participants were thrilled about the SIGNIS project. The direction of Télé Lumière offered the event 2 hours of live coverage and full coverage, which was also broadcast by channels from the Middle East and other satellite TV stations. The Childhood Project – A meeting place for photography and education that enables us to see the world through the eyes of children. A group of photographers and teachers has developed a model for photography and publishing workshops, in which they provide cameras for children, and give them the freedom to show what they observe in their day-to-day lives. The idea is to bring children closer to photography, increase their artistic appreciation by encouraging their imagination and creative abilities, and making them aware also of their environment and the environment of other children who take part in the project. www.proyectoinfancia.com The photo: author Martino Chiti. This photo was taken during the workshop that was held in the city of Pëje (Kosovo) in the Shkolla Fillore Xhemajil Kada. In that workshop eight 10 year-old children were involved. The assistance of the translator Sokol Broqui was key. 2 SIGNIS Media – N°2/2010 Samson & Delilah - In what the jury considered to be the strongest field of outstanding Australian films in a long time, the Australian Catholic Film Office has awarded its 2009 Film of the Year to Warwick Thornton and Kath Shelper’s Samson & Delilah. The film is about young love in a remote indigenous community which survives a move away from country, drug addiction, homelessness and desperate poverty. “Delilah’s fidelity to Samson is the moral core of this magnificent film,” Fr. Leonard observed. “The inversion of the biblical story was not lost on the jury either, where the name Delilah means Night, while Samson means the Sun.” In Warwick Thornton’s hands, a flawed Samson falls in love with Delilah, but after she cuts her hair in a grieving ritual for her grandmother, her power and strength increases as she saves Samson from his spiral towards death and destruction. Her presence in Samson’s life is redemptive. This film also points to the struggles and the signs of hope within Australian indigenous communities today. Fr. Formally distinct and relatively autonomous media like television, radio and cinema are now constantly re-inventing themselves to reach out to an ever more demanding audience. Like the media they work with, communicators find themselves swimming in a flux of innovation. Some, terrified by the disarray, recoil back into old entrenched zones of safety, others intoxicated by the fever discovery tumble from one novelty to the next. Both are lost. The reason why we need to produce quality value oriented media has not changed. Our mission remains the same and it should guide our creative re-invention of the use of media to transform our societies and build a culture of peace. n Nouvelles technologies, même mission Nous vivons dans une ère de changement et de vitesse, un moment de l’histoire qui est à la fois passionnant et terrifiant. According to the microchip manufacturer, Intel, by 2015 more than 12 billion devices will be capable of connecting to 500 billion hours of TV and video content. Moreover, TV and video is now dominating the Internet. Some estimates claim that by 2013 90% of all Internet traffic will be video and 60% of all video will be consumed by consumers over the Internet.” Moreover, viewers are demanding more from their TV sets. High definition digital television sets are already well established, now. The magazine, Screen Digest forecasts that there will be 1.2 million 3D capable sets in American homes by the end of 2010, a figure expected to rise to 9.7 million, or 8% of households, by 2013. But viewers don’t just want better technology, they also want the freedom not only to watch wherever they might be but also at a time that suits their lifestyles – TV on demand. Hence the increasing popularity of services like the BBC’s iPlayer which enables the audience to catch-up with TV shows they may have missed. Crucially the iPlayer is available through TV sets, the Internet and on mobile phones and now it is to be integrated with social networks so that viewers can see what their friends are watching. Viewers are also watching TV in unexpected places. A recent report in the New York Times reported that a rapidly increasing number of Americans are watching television on mobile phones – but at home. Up to now the assumption was that people would watch TV on their phones outside the home. It seems, however, that owners of iPhones and other devices are watching long episodes and sometimes complete films on their mobiles. Last year around 17.6 million people in the US watched mobile video for an average of just over 3.5 hours a month. Not surprisingly, the latest player to enter the TV market is Google. Through Google TV it hopes to make it possible for TV viewers to Cover story Reinventing Television www.signis.net use an on-screen search box that will allow viewers to search for television shows on the web, making television viewing much easier. The new Sony TV sets will basically be computers with very large screens and a wireless connection to the net. The first sets will be on the US market in the autumn. The next step from integrating TV with other technologies and enabling viewers to be their own schedulers is the movement towards greater interactivity. From its inception in 2005, Current TV (whose chairman is former US Vice-President, Al Gore) has invited its audience to participate and collaborate in ways that integrate web and television. Users are able to post stories - a web link, a portion of an article, a comment - from other sources. Other users add comments and vote, which then helps to determine the placement of clips on the website and what might be highlighted in the TV channel. Users can also produce 5- to 7-minute stories, called “pods,” that profile a character or idea. Its film review programme, for example, includes video movie reviews submitted by viewers. Users also contribute content through sending in video clips etc. Religious TV producers are also experimenting with new technologies and many companies, for example, EWTN, now provide applications for the iPhone that enable viewers to receive selected programmes. More adventurously, the Boston-based CatholicTV Network has started to use 3D imagery. Upon opening the 3-D section of the Catholic TV website, viewers are greeted by the director, Rev. Robert Reed, introducing a number of 3D videos. Reed says that at this point 3-D is still just a gimmick but that the station wanted to see how it could be used in the future. the changing habits and interests of viewers who are becoming more demanding and who increasingly want TV to fit round their habits and lifestyles rather than adjust to the expectations of TV producers. At the same time, viewers are coming to expect an ever more enhanced viewing experience – at least in terms of technology. The big question is whether the twin pressures of audience demand and technological innovation will be accompanied by qualitative changes in the content that is offered. That would be a real reinvention of TV. n Jim McDonnell South Africa “Church on the Ball” Multimedia Initiative With all eyes turned to South Africa for the 2010 Football World Cup, the South African Catholic Church seized the opportunity to showcase its work using multimedia tools. Produced by the Church communication office, the “Church on the Ball” video focuses on the work of the Catholic Church in South Africa, particularly in the areas of HIV/AIDS and human trafficking, against the backdrop of the 2010 World Cup. The clip is available for viewing on the video sharing platform Vimeo: http://vimeo. com/12043857, and is shared on Facebook. The 14-minute video is also available for broadcasting through the Office for Communication and Media of the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SACBC). The Church has also set up a dedicated website www.churchontheball.com that includes news, downloads and additional information on the Catholic parishes hosting the World Cup, making this South African initiative a good example of media convergence between video, Internet and social networking and of the global use of media on the occasion of a global event. n Contact: [email protected] What is now being called the “TV Anywhere” movement is challenging existing broadcasters and producers to re-think their assumptions about their audiences and about the nature of TV itself. TV is being reinvented primarily by SIGNIS Media – N°2/2010 5 Cover story Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) Today people need broadband Internet if they are to have access to multimedia video applications. Moreover, as ever higher quality film and TV images, including 3D, are being produced there is an increasing demand for more bandwidth. Internet service providers (ISPs) have started to invest in new Internet protocol (IP) networking technologies to meet the growing demand for better supported video applications while also developing a new form of television called IPTV. “They are looking to marry the high level of visual quality and reliability expectations of digital TV with the interactivity, flexibility, and rich personalization that IP technology enables,” explain experts Greg Thompson and Yih-Farn Robin Chen. For them IPTV is not just about delivery of digital television over the Internet; it is about creating a video-centric and visually compelling next generation of the Internet that is accessible on any device –be it mobile phone, computer, or high-definition TV (HDTV)– at any time and place. “It’s about leveraging the power of the Internet to better navigate the flood of content flowing our way. And it’s about reinventing television advertising from being an unwelcome interruption to providing useful, relevant information that can help make our lives more productive and fulfilling”. They disagree, however, that IPTV will be the next killer application for the Internet. They stress that IPTV is primarily a platform to better enable future killer applications, including those yet to be invented. It defines how to reliably and securely integrate video, including broadcast TV, targeted advertising, and video-on-demand (VOD), into flexible applications. These experts also indicate that “Video and IPTV have become the catalysts to bring together the requirements, technologies, architectures, services, protocols, organizations, and people to advance the development of the Internet and the serviceprovider networks that form it.” According to them “Telecommunication service providers find that video content and mobility are the key services consumers value and are willing to pay for.” And as these companies are “new to video and the multichannel video programming distributor (MVPD) market, they look to use IPTV’s advanced capabilities to differentiate themselves from established video providers.” They are seeking to integrate their new video capabilities with their leadership in the mobile market. n More information: Greg Thompson, Yih-Farn Robin Chen, “IPTV: Reinventing Television in the Internet Age”, IEEE Internet Computing, vol. 13, no. 3, pp. 11-14, May/June 2009. 6 SIGNIS Media – N°2/2010 BERLIN European Television Festival of Religious Programmes Broadcasters from Germany, the Netherlands and Ireland were the prize winners at the SIGNIS–WACC 17th European Television Festival of Religious Programmes held in Berlin from 2-6 June. The first prize was awarded to the documentary, Meine Eltern (My Parents) produced by ARD/Hessischer Rundfunk which depicts the relationship between a son and his old and sick parents. The winner of the second prize was the Dutch production, Patrick’s Koninkrijk (Patrick’s Kingdom), a touching children’s and family programme produced by RKK/KRO. The third prize went to My Father’s House, a moving exploration of one man’s struggle to come to terms with sexual abuse by a priest, produced by the Irish broadcaster RTE. The four-day festival considered the future of religious programmes on TV. In an opening address, Peter Frey, the Chief Editor of German public broadcaster, ZDF, reaffirmed that religion was of such importance in people’s lives that it must find a place on TV. The BBC’s Head of Religion, Aaqil Ahmed saw a future for religious programmes as long as they were both marketable and consistently focused on the interests of the audience. Msgr. Paul Tighe, Secretary to the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, encouraged TV producers to invent new, shorter narrative forms for the digital age. And the President of the International Jury, Kathleen LaCamera, challenged broadcasters to “be much more adventurous and broad ranging in our understanding of what constitutes serious religious programming in both form and content.” The Audience Prize, chosen by the Festival participants, was presented to Südwestrundfunk (SWR) for Alles koscher im Café (Yessir, this is Koscher) about a Jewish restaurant in Berlin. Commendations were given to two German programmes : Ein Haus für kleine Seelen (A House for Small Souls) (ARD/Bayerischer Rundfunk) and Mutig gegen Marx und Mielke (Courageous Against Marx and Mielke) (RBB/Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk). A special prize for the best website linked to a programme in the competition went to In Spite of Darkness from Loyola productions Munich. The prize was awarded by a jury of members of the European Christian Internet Conference (ECIC). Seventy programmes from 14 countries were originally submitted to the competition; of these, 23 were chosen for screening. The Festival was organized by SIGNIS (World Catholic Association for Communication) and WACC (World Association for Christian Communication) and in collaboration with German public broadcaster Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen (ZDF). Your Computer While Google TV tries to bring the benefits of Internet into the TV set, and Sony announces that their next TV screens will basically be large screen computers, other companies and devices follow the opposite path by bringing TV to computers. The Danish hardware manufacturer Sandberg (www.sandberg.it) sent to the SIGNIS Media office a sample of their new USB digital TV receiver for reviewing. The Mini DVB-T Dongle is really tiny, even more so than a thumb drive, and works with Windows XP, Vista or 7 (not Mac compatible). It comes with a small room aerial that is able to pick up digital and analogue TV as well as FM and DAB radio. There is also a small adaptor to connect the device to a larger roof aerial. Using the “Mini Dongle” is very simple: just install the programme and driver with the supplied CD-Rom, launch the application and perform an automatic channel search… You’re set! Compared to live video streaming on the web, the video quality is very good, even full screen, and the reception is a lot smoother, uninfluenced by web traffic. The software can record programmes on the computer’s hard drive in HD (720p) format with a simple button push. It is also possible to set the timer to record programmes through an easy-to-use electronic program guide. Overall, we were impressed with the user-friendliness and the quality of the device. Of course, the performance will vary depending on the strength of the signal from the TV station. The system is also dependent on the content of traditional TV channels and offers no real convergence with the Internet (except of course that you can surf the web while watching TV on the same computer). Can it compete with Google or Apple TV? The “Mini Dongle” is more about mobility, a very small device that can be plugged on a laptop anytime, anywhere, so the competition would rather be mobile phones offering access to TV and video content. While phones are more portable, the USB receiver enjoys better quality and the possibility to record. Of course, most people that have a smartphone also have a computer. Unless they have an iPad? Or maybe they have all of these things… As often when exploring new technologies, different systems will probably coexist before TV sets and computers on one hand, and TV channels and Internet on the other completely merge in a few years time. n LP www.sandberg.it SIGNIS Media – N°2/2010 11 Connecting People The ‘Always Connected’ Generation Teenagers in the United States are sending enormous quantities of text messages a day. Half of teenagers send 50 or more text messages a day, or 1,500 texts a month. Older girls (14-17) lead the way, averaging 100 messages a day. Text messaging has become the primary way that teenagers reach their friends, surpassing face-toface contact, email, instant messaging and voice calling as the daily communication tool for this age group. This finding is only one of the many insights to be found in a recent paper by Jan Servaes and Patchanee Malikhao. Entitled, Surviving in a 24/7 media shock and awe – distracted by everything, Servaes and Patchanee (contact: [email protected]) pull together a range of recent research to illuminate the complex lives of the so-called digital generation. This generation, the Millennials – those born after 1980, who are now making the passage into adulthood, are characterized as confident, self-expressive, liberal, upbeat and open to change. They are more ethnically and racially diverse than older adults. They are less religious, less likely to have served in the military, and are on track to become the most educated generation in American history. However, in many of their lifestyle choices, Millennials are not much different from adults of other generations but, they are unique in at least one way -they are history’s first ‘always connected’ generation. Steeped in digital technology and social media, they treat their multi-tasking hand-held gadgets almost like a body part –for better or worse. More than eight in ten say they sleep with a cell phone glowing by the bed, poised to disgorge texts, phone calls, emails, songs, news, videos, games and wake-up jingles. Three quarters have created a profile on a social networking site. One in five have posted a video of themselves online. However, earlier claims that teens and young adults associate with and through media in different ways than older generations, and therefore are better at multi-tasking, seem not to be supported by new findings. For instance, research done at Stanford University concludes that it takes 15 minutes to fully resume a serious mental task after answering an e-mail or instant messaging (IM). Involvement with this digital world seems to be linked to an increase in individualism which is also promoted by the media. Some researchers argue that high individualism can lead to narcissism, which leads to a very positive and inflated view of self. This value is growing rapidly and symbolic representations of this new culture of self expression are the emphasis on celebrities in the media, the success of MySpace and Facebook as social networking sites, the uploading of personal videos on YouTube, Twitter (micro blogging and text-based social networking or SMS on the Internet via its own website) and blogging. However, though the Millennials are willing to reveal a great deal about their private lives on social sites, there is some evidence that the preoccupation with self-expression, while still strong, is being tempered by a new and growing concern for privacy. A survey released in April 2010 by the University of California, Berkeley, found that more than half the young adults questioned had become more concerned about privacy than they were five years ago — mirroring the number of people their parents’ age or older with that worry. They are more diligent than older adults, however, in trying to protect themselves. In a new study in May 2010, the Pew Internet Project found that people in their 20s exert more control over their digital reputations than older adults, more vigorously deleting unwanted posts and limiting information about themselves. 12 SIGNIS Media – N°2/2010 Facebook has recently had to modify its privacy settings under pressure from users. The extent to which young people are being shaped by the pervasive media culture is a complex question which does not allow easy answers. However, there are enough indicators to suggest that the relationship with media is helping to shape identities and values. The eight to twenty-something in the US spend more than 50 hours in front of a screen each week. That is more than a regular working week. The TV shows they watch, video games they play, songs they listen to, books they read, text messages they send and websites they visit are an enormous part of their lives, offering a constant stream of messages about families, peers, relationships, gender roles, sex, violence, food, values, clothes, and so on. For example, findings suggest that the mass media may replace peers in sexual related information seeking of adolescents in an environment of increasing physical isolation. The mass media have been dubbed a sexual super peer for early maturing girls. And research evidence shows clearly that exposure to violence through media is a causal risk factor for aggressive and violent behaviour. It is expected that the long term effect of violent video games will be larger than that of TV but smaller than that of gang membership. In an always connected world, the challenge facing the Millennial generation is to disengage long enough to be able to make informed and reflective choices about their identities, how they want to live, and the values they wish to live by. n Full article can be found at www.signis.net Jan Servaes Patchanee Malikhao Diversité culturelle Un regard sur les valeurs familiales et la mémoire www.signis.net Dans les récents festivals (avril, mai et juin 2010) auxquels ont participé des jurys SIGNIS et œcuméniques, deux grandes thèmes reviennent : l’attention aux valeurs familiales et la préoccupation de la mémoire. Malgré ses parents néerlandais, il fera de son mieux pour être un vrai indien, digne de ses racines. n GC A look at family values At recent festivals (April, May and June 2010) in which SIGNIS and ecumenical juries have participated, there has been a recurrent theme: the attention to family values. The concern for family unity The SIGNIS prize at Festroia was awarded to the Danish film En Famillie (One Family) by Pernille Fischer Christensen. The film-maker first focuses on the relationship between a dying father and one of his daughters, then on his second wife and the children he has had by her.The father hopes that the tradition and memory of the family’s achievements, famous for three centuries as the Danish Crown’s official baker and supplier, will not be lost. His eldest daughter works in an art gallery and wants to go to New York with her boyfriend to work. Her life changes dramatically when she learns that her father is seriously ill and wants her to take over the family business. Her friend doesn’t want her to sacrifice her dreams for her family. She decides to stay with her father and in this way the family is brought together, despite crisis and problems. “There is no religion in the film, but many believers. It is an intense drama, with plenty of metaphors on bread, the death of the patriarch and life. The film-maker shows the viewer that man cannot live by bread alone” explained the SIGNIS Jury. The SIGNIS prize at Alba also brought out the problem of balancing work and family. In his documentary Last Train Home, the Canadian Lixin Fan shows how hundreds of millions of Chinese workers have employment far from their families. Often, they only take the train back to their children once a year, for the Chinese New Year. Lixin notices that Chinese society is rapidly changing and that children are not aware of the sacrifices their parents are ready to make for them to have a good education. Many teenagers only want to leave school to follow the mirages Cultural Diversity of the emerging consumer society. According to the SIGNIS jury the film-maker shows the devastation of traditional family and entire rural communities, sacrificed to a justifiable ambition for social and economic progress that leaves neither time, nor words, nor energy for looking after themselves and their loved ones, and forces them to live for ever separated and torn apart. Mao’s Last Dancer by Bruce Heresford (SIGNIS commendation in Washington) deals with the same theme, as it tells the story of a seven-year-old child, Li Cunxin who is taken from his family by the Chinese government in the 1960s to follow classical ballet lessons in Beijing. The young boy remains there for eleven years. He then goes to the United States for a three-month internship and discovers that there are other values than those of the cultural revolution. Family is a theme present in most Mike Leigh films. At Cannes, he was presented with an ecumenical commendation for Another Year. It is the story of an old couple. She is a psychologist in a hospital; he is a geologist. They live a peaceful and harmonious life, cultivating their garden in the suburbs, but see their close friends sapped by loneliness and the anxiety of age. Another Year is a beautiful intimate and well acted film that Mike Leigh modestly observes: “talks about how to deal with who we are, with ourselves and in front of others… I don’t think the film brings solutions; it only tries to give suggestions, emotions on how to deal with life’s problems.” As seasons pass by, friendship and affection spread simply between ordinary people confronted by the joys and pains of everyday life. Each person is encouraged to take hold of their own life. The single-parent family The SIGNIS commendation (Washington) was given to the Czech production El Paso by Zdenke Tyc not only for the way it looks at racism towards gypsies in Europe, but also at the love of a young widowed gypsy who has seven children. She is forced to leave her comfortable apartment for a shelter on the town’s outskirts. The authorities want to separate her from her children and place them in an orphanage. The film-maker humanizes the family, especially the woman, debased by racist attitudes. But he does not suggest ready-made answers: “what I want is to give hope”, says Tyc. The British short film (ecumenical commendation at Oberhausen) Electric Light Wonderland by Susanne Wallin is about a father bringing up his two children on his own. He is very attentive to the two teenagers’ wishes and needs. Using subtle language and close shots full of empathy, the film shows the respect and trust between a father and son. The Mexican Pedro Gonzalez Rubio in his film Alamar (SIGNIS BAFICI commendation) passes on values lost in today’s urban society. It is the story of a couple separating. The mother is about to leave for Rome with their child, but before leaving, she allows the boy to spend a few months with his father in the countryside, in a wild and natural environment. The father doesn’t only want his son to discover “wild” nature, but also fatherly love and his vision of life. The son learns to fish, to live from his work, and realises that not everything comes from supermarkets; he discovers solitude and patience. The South Korean film-maker Lee Chang-Dong (ecumenical commendation at Cannes) in Poetry paints the touching portrait of a grandmother who escapes violence in the world through poetry. She looks after her grandson on her own and in spite of her age, works in difficult circumstances as a cleaning lady. Through poetry classes the old lady learns to contemplate the world and its beauty. Then she learns that her grandson is involved in a number of rapes and that a girl has committed suicide. She loses her joy in living but not her courage. As the other parents want to conceal the problem, the grandmother tries to reveal the truth. Finally, Sebbe, by the young film-maker Babak Najafi (ecumenical commendation at Zlin) is about a young boy living with his mother Eva in the suburbs in Sweden. Tormented by his school friends, he escapes from this reality thanks to his capacity to make things or play tricks on others. For the film’s producer, Sebbe is above all a “powerful story on the relationship between a mother and her son, a story likely to interest viewers all over the world.” n GC Una mirada sobre los valores familiares En los festivales recientes (abril, mayo y junio de 2010), los miembros de SIGNIS han participado en una decena de jurados diferentes. Fr. Joseph Pymbellykunnel SJ who directs Chitrabani (Sight and Sound) in Kolkata, told journalists that his media centre and Banideepti in Dhaka have been preparing Bengali radio programmes for the Manila-based Radio Veritas Asia (RVA) listeners for over three decades. However, the radio recently cut 30 percent of its subsidy it gave to the two South Asian centres to prepare the Bengali programme and reduced the number of staff from three to two, the Jesuit priest said. Now, the Salesians and Krishnagar diocese in West Bengal have agreed to become partners in the mission, he added. Chitrabani is involved in producing radio programmes for the Church in West Bengal, and it was necessary to tap resources available in the state, said Father Pymbellykunnel, who is also secretary of the regional Bishops’ council’s Communication Commission. Salesian Fr. Robin Gomes, who has produced two of the weekly RVA Bengali programmes since 1998, said his centre, Nitika, another media centre in Kolkata, did not receive funds for the past year. “We had to produce the programmes from our resources, and therefore the Salesian superior has agreed to support the production of these two programmes,” said Fr. Gomes, who coordinated the Bengali programme from Manila during 1995-2001. Fr. Subhash Baroi, director of Prerona (Inspiration), the pastoral centre of Krishnagar diocese, told UCA News that his bishop and lay people have come forward to help RVA’s Bengali programmes because they are convinced about the “grave need” to collaborate to keep the programmes going. Fr. Baroi, who was also in the RVA Bengali section in Manila, said he is now working on details to support Chitrabani to produce programmes for Manila. Dilip Majumdar, who produces RVA Bengali programmes, said radio reaches millions and promotes interfaith dialogue with Muslims. He said RVA’s Bengali programmes reach some 70 percent of the Muslims in the area. If Muslims of rural Bengal know about Christ and the Bible, it is thanks to RVA programmes, he told UCA News. India’s West Bengal state and neighbouring Bangladesh have Bengali as a common language. Muslims form 25 percent of West Bengal’s total population of 80 million while 90 percent of Bangladesh’s 160 million people are Muslims. SIGNIS Media – N°2/2010 19 Church and Communication INDIA KENYA Priests to go Digital The archdiocese of Bombay, the largest diocese in India, is training priests in its 119 parishes to use online and digital media to communicate the Gospel. “It is part of the ongoing formation for our diocesan priests and religious priests working in parishes,” said Father Gilbert de Lima, dean of the St. Pius X College, the archdiocesan seminary. The move comes after Pope Benedict XVI, in his 2010 World Communications Day message in January, urged priests to utilize new media technology in their pastoral roles. Father de Lima said the archdiocese’s Conference of Diocesan Priests, hosted a one-day seminar on interactive media on March 4. He said over 100 priests registered for the workshop. “The priests were given hands-on training on web hosting, blogging, group SMSing, making short documentaries and posting them on YouTube, counselling in Internet chat rooms” as well as in traditional print and electronic media, said Father Melroy Fernandes, associate director of the archdiocese’s Catholic Communications Centre. The workshop helped parish priests to become media savvy and gave a creative lift to parish bulletins, magazines and posters, said Father Fernandes, who is a coordinator for the course. He said priests are primarily communicators of a culture of values, and using online and digital media would make them more effective in reaching out to the masses. The Catholic Church and New Media Technology Clergy, teachers and parents should all ensure that today’s children and young people are educated about the positive aspects of modern technology. Kenyan Bishop Alfred Rotich fears that if this is not carried out, many young people will become victims of the negative aspects of the new technologies, particularly the Internet. The bishop, who is chairman of the Catholic Bishops Commission for Social Communications, was presiding over the mass at the end of a four-day Catholic media festival, which also marked World Communications Sunday. He added that the Church and the clergy in particular have no option but to make every effort in incorporating the use of modern technology in their pastoral work. The theme of the four-day media festival was “Living the Word in a Digital World”. Part of the festival was an exhibition of the work of the Catholic media houses in Kenya, the National Mirror, Ukweli video, Radio Waumini, New People and The Seed magazines, and the Beams and Pauline publications. Sheen: Servant of All produced by the Sheen Foundation was presented. Msgr. Deptula said the foundation is working with a national Catholic marketing group to explore distribution options, including EWTN and PBS affiliates. Sheen was one of the first Catholic priests and bishops to become an international media (radio and TV) personality. Sheen was born in El Paso, Illinois, in 1895. He went to the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. to earn a doctorate in philosophy. After ordination in 1919 Sheen studied at the Catholic University in Louvain in Belgium. After his Ph.D. in philosophy in 1925 he taught until 1950 at the Catholic University of America. From 1928 he became a media personality when he went on the Catholic Hour, a nationally broadcast radio programme, where he became the programme’s most popular preacher. In 1950 Francis, Cardinal Spellman of New York named Sheen to head the American branch of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith and a year later he became bishop. When a year later the Archdiocese of New York decided to enter the world of television, Sheen was chosen to appear on screen. The initial half-hour lectures were broadcast on the tiny Dumont Network, opposite big budget programmes by comedian Milton Berle, “Mr. Television,” and singer-actor Frank Sinatra. No one gave Sheen a chance to compete effectively. Soon, however, Sheen took the country by storm, winning an Emmy, appearing on the cover of Time magazine, and entering the “most admired” list of Americans. In its second year, “Life Is Worth Living” moved to the ABC Network and had a sponsor, the Admiral Corporation. Bishop Sheen became an active participant in the Vatican II sessions in Rome and thoroughly endorsed the reforms that followed. He tried to make his diocese the bridge between the old and new Catholicism, enacting sweeping reforms and making headlines in the process. During the course of his more than 50-year career in the Church, he wrote 66 books and countless articles. JAPAN Connected In early 2007, SIGNIS Japan created a home page online. Then a special corner dedicated to SIGNIS ASIA Assembly 2007 in Tokyo was added in English for announcements, registration, useful information, and such. Then two years plus of silence as they were not prepared to make any English version of the home page. The situation today is somewhat the same, but they decided to launch their quarterly newsletter «TALITHA CUM» (of course in Japanese.) The first issue for Christmas 2009 has now been followed by the second issue for Easter 2010. They would much like to be united/connected with the rest of SIGNIS. So they have done their best to translate the first issue of the newsletter «TALITHA CUM» into English, as it depicts clearly what they are doing and what they are thinking. They have added an «English Plaza» tab, on the top page of the home page, where you can go inside and click on the English titles to read the contents. http://signis-japan.org T. Mac Machida SRI LANKA Short Film Festival of Young Amateur Film-Makers on Jesus Today A Catholic group, Kithusara, held its very first short film festival with entries from amateur film-makers focusing on the topic Jesus of Today. Thirteen Sinhalese films, lasting five to 10 minutes, were screened in front of a public of hundreds of spectators at a Church-run technical school in Negombo one evening last March. The films were produced by SIGNIS Media – N°2/2010 21 News from Everywhere young amateur film-makers using mobile phones and hand-held cameras. Most of the films portrayed the economic struggles faced by young people and poor communities. They also tackled themes such as war, love, loneliness, interreligious harmony and the fate of children in a war-torn environment. “The main aim of the festival was to identify Jesus who is suffering among us and among the poor … and marginalized people in the world,” said Fr. Nandana Saparamadhu, an organizer of the festival. The Life, a film on life and death directed by Jude Samantha, won the first prize, while Faith, which dealt with interreligious harmony and directed by Samantha Perera, came in second. Koshila Peiris won third prize for her film Defeating a Storm. Organizers say there are plans to make the film festival an annual event and even expand into other media such as painting, photography, short stories, music and drama. Kithusara, meaning “the essence of Christianity,” comprises young people and priests. The festival was held to focus on Jesus and his mission during Lent. Pakistan Catholic TV Channel First Anniversary The country’s first Catholic television channel celebrated its first anniversary by honouring its anchors, all of them volunteers. More than 500 people gathered for the April 28 programme at St. Francis Church in Lahore. Catholic TV, a round-the-clock local cable service, includes shows on human rights abuses, current affairs, Christian personalities, youth, family, liturgy, bible quizzes and programmes about the life of clergy. Father Morris Jalal, founder and executive director of Catholic TV said local Catholics totally funded the project. “It is a service for and by the local Church,” he explained. During the event, anchors were given awards that included a citation appreciating them for their work. Auxiliary Bishop Sebastian Shah of Lahore, who was also present at the event, said that “such media” are necessary because people nowadays “are losing interest in faith.” The purpose of the TV is to take advantage of the era of rapid communications to promote human values and the message of the Gospel to a general audience. While Christian print media remains limited only to the literate, electronic media is watched by everybody and could possibly help build and reinforce a society of peace and tolerance. Programming includes Christian films, documentaries on Church activities, talk shows, interviews, holy songs, rosary recitation, Bible quiz competitions and live Sunday Mass. Catholic TV can be viewed within a radius of 10 kilometres from the central Lahore compound of St. Francis Parish, an area in which an estimated 8,000 Catholic families live. Production facilities are simple. The dining room of the parish doubles as the set for recording interviews, and a small storeroom houses the editing facilities. The salaries for the 11 Catholic TV staff members add up to US$680 per month. The money comes from parish revenues with no outside funding. The government’s media regulatory body has not approved a permit for any Christian radio, TV or news service, and state-owned Pakistan Television grants Christians only two 30-minute slots a year for Christmas and Easter programmes. Catholic communicators have found their way around Pakistani unwillingness to give airspace to the Church, taking advantage of cable and Internet to broadcast their message. The first Catholic TV channels in Pakistan have been endorsed by Archbishop Lawrence Saldanha of Lahore, President of the National Center for Social Communications. Ucan Nouvelles d’ici et d’ailleurs Fr. Chinnadurai has Masters in several subjects, including Journalism and Mass Communications. He has won the prestigious Rashtriya Gaurav Award, and Glory of India Gold Medal for securing the rights of minorities in the country. He served as the Public Relations Officer of the Tamil Nadu Bishops Council for more than a decade and has authored nine books. His book on the life of Mother Theresa titled Boomiyin Devathai (The Goddess of the Earth) was released by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Government, Mr. M. Karunanidhi. He edited and published leading Catholic Tamil Weekly titled Nam Vazhvu (Our Life) for seven years. Signis India, which forms part of the worldwide communication network of media professionals, promotes media activities through awards, grants, study seminars and production which promote communal harmony and peace. The focus of study and discussion for SIGNIS India this year is ‘youth and children for a culture of peace.’ www.cbcisite.com/cbcinews4227.htm USA Family Guide for Using Media The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has issued a Family Guide to the media. They present this in the following terms: “The Second Vatican Council called communication media «marvels» and «gifts» from God, but it also recognized that these gifts can be mixed blessings, depending on how they are used. The media’s impact continues to grow, as computer networks and the Internet add powerful and easily accessible new means to the familiar forms of mass communication —print, television, radio, film, video, telephone, and cable services. Influential enough individually, they are converging into multi-media networks that make them increasingly essential to people’s daily lives. The media are so much part of us that to recognize their impact we must step back and consciously think about how they shape our lives and what they are saying. An intelligent use of media can prevent our being dominated by them and enable us instead to measure them by our standards. In this way, even many messages with which we cannot agree, inevitably coming to us from a diverse constellation of media, will not hurt us. They can even be turned to our benefit by whetting our understanding and articulation of what we believe. It is important for parents to educate their children in the influence of the media, to take responsibility for monitoring what media their children use, and to become role models for appropriate use of media. The use of the media involves moral choices. Here are ten actions or attitudes that can guide parents as media consumers to affirm Christian values, which are: Respect life; Respect human beings and the family; Apply gospel values; Use your intelligence; Talk back to the media; Set your own agenda; Look at consequences; See the whole picture; Be alert to the effects of advertising and above all talk to each other. People are more important than things. Media usage should help build each family’s community of faith as one source that can lead family members out of themselves and toward each other. Ask yourselves whether your family’s way of using media does that or isolates family members instead. How can your media usage improve family communication and enrich your conversation? Selvamani, Director Shanmugasundaram, Actor Srikanth, Music Directors S. A. Raj Kumar and A.R. Rehana. ISFFI 2010, the much awaited 4th International Short Film Festival of India took off on a solemn note on 20 March at Albert Theatres, Chennai in the presence of Mr. Parithi Ellamvazhuthi, the Minister for Information, Government of Tamil Nadu and a number of other dignitaries. Seventy short films from across the globe were screened during the twoday festival and thousands of film lovers took part in the festival. Among the guests were Fr. Joe Andrew, the Vice-President of Don Bosco Institutions, cinematographer and film-maker Rajiv Menon, film director and editor B. Lenin, director and scriptwriter E. Ramadoss, director Babu Sivan, director Badri, actor Arun Vijay, actor Shakthi Vasu, actor Mahendran and Mrs. Jayashree Ravindran, Director of Ability Foundation, Chennai. The Minister of Information in his inaugural address highlighted how the shift has taken place from producing three-hour feature films to 10-minute short films. He affirmed that short films and short-film-makers should be promoted and encouraged and that the initiative of DBICA to promote such initiatives is highly laudable. He exhorted all the visual media students to venture into making short films that will benefit the public and communicate powerful messages to society. Rajiv Menon stressed in his message that cinema was not a fairy tale telling business, but depended much upon content that is realistic and close to the common man. He cited the example of the recent blockbuster Hindi movie Three Idiots which was based on a book, and it reached the audience for its realistic story treatment without adding many cinematic elements. He advised and encouraged all young film-makers and students to become `creators`, by reading and writing good material in media, both creatively and technically and affirmed that a short-film festival of this sort could be a very good learning experience for all. Fr. Joe Andrew, who himself is a short-film-maker highlighted the fact that short films were the best medium to convey and communicate to the masses. The shorter the films and sharper the messages, greater the impact, was his message to the film-makers and students. Actor Arun Vijay in his message expressed that a short-film festival of this sort is a clear indication that a new era of cinema was coming up, which is more story-oriented and value-based, and so a festival of this nature provides a venue for film-makers and a impetus for beginners that could be a good learning and beginning for all film-makers. Actor Shakthi Vasu happily recalled about his affinity to the Don Bosco Institution, talking about his school days and remarked that it was a happy coincidence that cinema and Don Bosco had offered him an opportunity to participate in the short film festival. Two new productions of DBICA, a short film Mannum Sivanthathu based on the struggles of the Tamil people in Sri Lanka and an audio album of 12 CDs titled Ulaga Varalattril Indru highlighting the important day-to-day events of world history was released by the Minister of Information. The inaugural ceremony concluded with the vote of thanks by Ronald Doggett, the ISFFI festival coordinator. The first day of screening commenced soon after the inaugural ceremony and more than 30 shorts were screened. The festival provided a very good platform for interaction among the students, film-makers, film lovers and public. www.donboscoindia.com Noticias de todas partes el Premio Anual de Comunicación “Carlos Crespi”, cuya quinta edición está en marcha; tenemos participación en el Festival de Cine “Cero Latitud”, en el que también por cuarto año consecutivo entregamos un Premio a la mejor película latinoamericana”, dijo el directivo. She gives a detailed story of this process in her article Unda Treasured Moments published in The Emergence of SIGNIS (2009, Peter Malone, Ed.). She became involved with Unda-USA in 1973 when she started religious programming for cable television. Later on she began working at the University of Dayton where, from 2000 onwards she developed the Virtual Learning Community for Faith Formation. The online programme has 50 diocesan partners, e-learners in 125 dioceses and goes into 34 countries. The VLCFF extends adult religious education and faith formation training to anyone with access to the Internet. After being elected onto the Unda USA Board in1985 she became Vice-President. Four years later she joined the international board of management as President of Unda USA, this led later to the Presidency of Unda. In that capacity she was nominated to the Pontifical Council for Social Communications where she made history as the first woman with voting privileges on that Vatican council. She had a substantial input into Aetatis Novae. That document called for the development of pastoral communications planning around the world. She co-wrote the book The Gospel in Cyberspace, and she co-directs the Caribbean School for Catholic Communication. In 1997, Unda USA awarded her the President’s Medallion – a lifetime achievement award. The Peter Li Group named her one of the 25 most influential individuals in Catholic education over the past 25 years. In 2001, Pope John Paul II awarded her the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Medal, bestowed to lay people and clergy who have given zealous and outstanding service to the Catholic Church. Later she received the Distinguished Communicators Award from the Salesian Guild. Recently, in April 2010, the National Association of Parish Catechetical Directors (NPCD) selected Sr. Angela Ann for the 2010 Emmaus Award for Excellence in Catechesis for her work to advance adult religious education and faith formation online and to train students to become leaders in Catholic religious education. n GC 26 SIGNIS Media – N°2/2010 Sœur Angela Ann Zukowski a été présidente de Unda de 1994 à 2001. The Emergence of SIGNIS (Peter Malone, 2009). Books Books and DVD Spirituality and the Filipino Film Edited by Clodualdo del Mundo, Jr CFA (Communication Foundation for Asia) Film and Faith Series The question of spirituality in Filipino films, quite surprisingly, is one that is not explored in critical essays, much less in book length studies. The influence of the Catholic tradition has been suggested in an essay or two that deal with melodrama, particularly with the characterization of the woman/martyr and other stock characters in Filipino films, but there is not much else as far as a consistent treatment of spirituality in local films is concerned. This collection of essays entitled Spirituality and the Filipino Film is an attempt to fill that obvious gap and is envisioned as a step towards a serious study of this subject. This anthology of essays is an exploration into a relatively uncharted territory. Fr. Peter Malone has a good introduction to the subject of spirituality in film through his essay “Asian Cinema and Spirituality”. He suggests four local themes on the subject, namely the divine, faith, ethics and morality, and spiritual life. Then, he proceeds to illustrate these themes through a study of representative films from the major religious traditions - Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim and Catholic. He uses Santa Santita for the Catholic tradition. SIGNIS Media – N°2/2010 27
