anaheim public utilities fa l l i s s u e • 2015 NEW MILITARY VETERANS DISCOUNT OPTION As we come upon another Veterans Day, we are reminded of the sacrifice Anaheim families make to serve in the armed forces – not just the men and women who serve, but their children, mothers and fathers, as well as friends and colleagues they leave behind when deployed. That’s one reason Anaheim Public Utilities is proud to announce a new military veterans discount, which provides a 10% electricity credit. In order to be eligible, applicants have to be named on the Anaheim Public Utilities bill and provide a copy of either a DD-214, Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC), or Common Access Card (CAC) with their application. The discount is also based on income, so the veteran will have to earn less than 80% of the median income in Orange County, which is adjusted annually. The military veterans discount was approved unanimously by the City Council earlier this fall, and is an extension of the existing credit for seniors and the disabled. ANAHEIM CUSTOMERS MEET WATER CONSERVATION GOALS DURING ONGOING DROUGHT Thank you to Anaheim residents, businesses and city departments for helping to meet our state-mandated conservation target of at least 20% by February 2016. The Anaheim community has already achieved 2.3 billion gallons of water saved – that’s two-thirds of the way toward Anaheim’s water savings goal of 3.3 billion gallons. Customers have shared numerous ways they are doing their part to save water – by taking shorter showers, following the two-day outdoor irrigation schedule, washing clothes and dishes with full loads, and by participating in our rebate programs. City departments have also been helping by reducing watering and replacing turf along medians, at parks, golf courses, and other city facilities. And the cont. FOLLOW THE MANDATORY MEASURES Only water landscapes 2 days per week – Even number address: Sunday and Thursday – Odd number address: Tuesday and Saturday Avoid watering landscapes between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m (max 8 mins/day/station) Adjust landscape watering to eliminate runoff Use a broom—not a hose—to clean driveways and pavement Use a shut-off nozzle when using the hose ANAHEIM CENTRAL LIBRARY 500 W. Broadway M–F: 10 a.m.–8 p.m. | Sat: 10 a.m.–6 p.m. CANYON HILLS LIBRARY 400 Scout Trail M–Th: 11 a.m.–8 p.m. | Fri: 10 a.m.–6 p.m. | Sat: 11 a.m.–5 p.m. FLUSHED WIPES = CLOGGED PIPES Did you know just because something claims to be “flushable,” it doesn’t necessarily mean it is? Take for example, baby wipes and paper towels – they are made of material that doesn’t disintegrate in the sewer system like toilet paper does. Here are other things you should not flush: • adhesive bandages • diapers • animal waste • facial tissue • cotton swabs • feminine products • dental floss • wipes of ANY kind These items don’t break down in the sewer system and get wrapped around other items, potentially causing a blockage. Keep in mind, Anaheim Public Utilities recycles sewer water at the Water Recycling Demonstration Plant (pictured above) and uses it for irrigation and toilet flushing in the surrounding area. Please do your part to keep the system moving – remember, Flushed Wipes = Clogged Pipes! CUSTOMERS ARE MEETING GOALS from Page 1 numbers are impressive – to date, rebate participation highlights include: CUSTOMER SERVICE CORNER HOW DO I RESET MY PASSWORD? 1. Click on "Forgot your Password" • 604,000 square feet of thirsty turf has been replaced with drought-tolerant alternatives at homes, businesses, and city facilities, saving over 26 million gallons each year • 6,700 rotating nozzles have been provided by Anaheim Public Utilities, saving nearly 10 million gallons per year • Customers have replaced 1,100 less efficient toilets and 380 clothes washers with high efficiency models, saving more than 13 million gallons per year 2. Enter User Name • Nearly 80 weather-based irrigation controllers have been installed by customers, which will automatically shut off outdoor watering during rainy weather expected this winter Anaheim Public Utilities remains committed to providing high quality service at low rates to our customers. Therefore, we are taking a number of steps to make sure that reliable service is not compromised, with a special emphasis on providing sufficient water pressure to fire hydrants and replacing older pipelines systematically. Because lower water usage results in lower revenue, Anaheim Public Utilities continues to improve internal efficiencies, 3. Enter Secret Answer particularly during the ongoing drought. Many of the steps taken are behind-the-scenes and include delaying replacing vehicles, deferring non-critical maintenance, holding staffing levels static, and prioritizing capital projects to those that are most needed to keep water flowing. Additionally, Anaheim has started to dip into reserve funds and anticipates depleting reserves by $3 million to offset the drought impact. Unfortunately, these steps are not enough to cover all expenses; and so a proposed adjustment to customer charges will be requested, but will be structured to reward customers who have been conserving with lower water bills. A typical customer who has been able to reduce their usage 20% from 20 to 16 hundred cubic feet (hcf ) per month, will see a $4.50 reduction in their bills, while customers who have not been able to save water will see an increase of $4.90. The Public Utilities Board will hold a public hearing on December 16, 2015, before this item is considered by the City Council in January 2016.
