Understanding the Culture of our Students
What all new Aruban teachers need to know before stepping in the
classroom!

Abstract: This essay aims to shed light on the importance of teachers knowing the culture of their
students at their respective schools. The author argues that teachers can not be distant observers
but must be participants in the learning process. Educators ought to develop a well balanced
cultural intelligence in order to better comprehend and serve the ever changing Aruban
demographic landscape
Introduction
To commence my narration I wish not to be a
pseudo TV psychology guru like the famous, or
to many Arubans infamous “Dr Phil” whose aim
is to seemingly provide a quick fix for life long
challenges in an hour including commercial
breaks, or a politician who thinks he or she can
remedy the nations ills in a speech that was
ghostwritten for him or her. What I wish to
accomplish with this simple outpouring is a
critical awareness of our roles as teachers, role
models and, most of all, as human beings. It is
important to note that my expression is not a
critique on the teaching profession. After all,I
am a teacher myself. Teachers in Aruba, as well
as around the world, face difficult
circumstances on a daily basis. Stories of
classroom fights and campus shootings are all
too common. Teachers often sacrifice of themselves so that their students may have. At the
risk of sounding like Sidney Poitier in
Braithwaite’s ‘To Sir with Love’ it is my main
aim to explain why it is important that teachers
recognize the culture of the students that they
teach. We often go on holiday and see lush landscapes, white palm beaches and perfectly paved
roads without ever seeing the trenchtowns in
Jamaica, the sowetos in South Africa, the
favelas in Rio, and the madikis and villages in
Aruba.

This form of selected tourism can also be found
in classrooms where teachers choose to discover
only limited aspects of the lives of their
students. These seemingly unattractive areas
are left untapped because many of us feel that
it comes with too much baggage. Teachers often
claim, “I am not paid to be a social worker or to
be somebody’s momi or dady.” “Parents should
do a better job of raising their children.”
Teachers often drive in schoolyards with their
fancy SUV’s in poor neighborhoods, teach for 5
hours and disappear to the suburbs without ever
truthfully making a connection with the
surroundings and cultures of their students. It is
of utmost importance that teachers acquire a
profound understanding of not only their
students in the classroom setting, but also in
their separate spheres. A holistic comprehension
hereof will facilitate the student teacher
relationship in a positive manner. Neighborhood
inhabitants would be more willing to assist in
the development of the boys and girls of the
barios. If you want to get respect you have to
give respect!

society
When you ask kids in high school what they want
to become when they graduate, teaching is
often not their first choice; for that matter,
neither second, nor third. Most students rather
study medicine, business or law. To many,
teaching is seen as a last resort.
The teaching profession enjoyed much status in
the 60’s and 70’s. Teachers were well respected
and seen as model citizens. Today, many
teachers feel like they have become second rate
citizens in the professional world. They have
lesser opportunities for advancement in their
careers and of course, the title of juffrouw or
meneer does not sound half as interesting as
dokter or meester.
Primary school teachers are even more
scrutinized because their profession is perceived
as ‘soft’ and because they are awarded lower
salariesamongst others are extremely essential
for primary school teachers.
Many teachers in Aruba initially choose to
become teachers because the shorter working
hours and vacations seem very attractive. It is
believed that one can arrive at home earlier and
have more time with the kids and family.
This is a huge misconception because in
practice, good teachers work tirelessly during
all types of hours of the day. Tests need to be
prepared, work has to be corrected and teacher
parent meetings have to be attended. This
strenuous work schedule frequently affects
teachers in such a negative way that they often
project an unrealistic image of the profession to
the outside world. If one chooses to become a
teacher for the right reasons it can be one of
the most frustrating and yet satisfying
occupations there exists.
To teach is to save lives, to open eyes, to bring
about change, to inspire and to shape minds
forever. Regardless of what the neigh sayers
say, it is one hell of a job!
Speaking the cultural language
Just imagine an Aruban teacher going into a
school in San Nicolas without understanding a
word of San Nicolas English. For example a
student may ask a new teacher “what’s up?” by
which the teacher replies, “a ceiling fan” or a
teacher who newly arrives at a school in the
district of Madiki and says “Dakota Tur Dia!”
Respect and a willingness to learn should be the
premise of all teachers. There has to be a
realization that as a teacher one operates in the
students’ zone and that their cultural reality is
the driving mechanism of that space.

An educator has to know what type of food his/ •
her students eat, what language they speak,
what games they play and who is who in the
neighborhood. We often see other cultures from
an ethnocentric perspective, staying in our

separate and comfortable spaces while ignoring
the fact that we are all interconnected. And
yes, even in Aruba, even though we don’t like to
admit it.

Developing cultural intelligence through
fieldwork
As an anthropologist and teacher I think it’s

important that teachers take the following
suggestions into account for the enhancement of
their cultural intelligence before stepping into
the classroom.

activities will be held.
Build networks with local nongovernmental
organizations (NGO’s). They will be more
willing to support school initiatives.
Show interest in the language and history of

older folks or even go to the local museum to
get a better understanding of what is taken
place in the neighborhood.
Show interest in the food of that particular
region. And remember to always accept
when offered. Refusal may be seen as an
insult.
Take a stroll through the neighborhood.
Observe the streets and the houses. Check
out how well the houses are maintained.

teachers we cannot do it alone. Just like the old
African proverb states, “It takes a village to

Terugblik vormingsgebied Natuur en Techniek

adem binnen het vormingsgebied. Samen zijn er veel plannen
samengesteld om het vormingsgebied nieuwe lucht in te blazen.
Een van deze projecten is onder andere: een beleidsdocument,
dat de werklijn binnen het vormingsgebied aangeeft en waarborgt. Het schooljaar werd afgesloten met een docentstage
waarin de docenten van het vormingsgebied ervaringen gingen
oplopen bij een basisschool. De verkregen ervaringen zullen verwerkt worden in meer betekenisvolle stageopdrachten voor
2010-2011. Het vormingsgebied heeft tevens de gelegenheid gekregen om zich beter te profileren in het veld. Nieuwe didactiek, informatie over techniek en natuuronderwijs werden gefaciliteerd aan de volgende scholen: Fontein kleuterschool,
Comm. Pieterboer school, en Mon plaisir. Op Comm. Pieterboer
school hebben de docenten de leerlingen geobserveerd en lessen gedraaid om voorbeelden te geven van didactiek die te maken hebben met buitenwerk en samenwerkend leren. Dit waren
onder andere: excursies, zelfontwerpende opdrachten en carrousel werk die voorbeelden zijn van de grote concepten binnen
het vormingsgebied namelijk: zelfontdekkend en spelenderwijs
leren. Een dank woord gaat naar de heer Praim, mr. Rene en
Juff. Rosalie voor de unieke gelegenheid.
Het vormingsgebied blikt heel tevreden terug naar een succesvolle academisch jaar waar interne en externe relaties versterkt
zijn en nieuwe relaties in het veld zijn afgesloten.
We hopen dat in de nabije toekomst dat het netwerk van contacten versterkt worden en dat het veld bereid is om klassen
bereidt te stellen voor het verder uitproberen van materialen en
lessen.

Na aña 2003 mi a cuminsa traha na Gandelman Jewelers como IT technician
hardware specialist, na unda mi a haya e oportunidad pa siña hopi di e mundo di
computer y networking. Na 2005 mi a tuma e iniciativa pa haci un estudio den area
di Systeem beheerder na Hulanda na unda m’a bai cu e intencion di keda 4 aña,
pero suerte a compaña mi y mi a haya e oportunidad pa caba mi studio 1 aña mas
trempan. Pa termina MBO mi a realisa e ultimo practica na W.E.B. Aruba N.V. pa 5
luna. Na 2008 mi a gradua na Alfa-College Groningen. Despues di a busca trabou na
varios empresa priva y gubernamental na 2009 mi a cuminsa gana algun experiencia
cu SITA na airport como Field services Technician, despues na 2010 ma traha
temporalmente na Radio Latina 92.3fm controlando tur e parti technico di e radio y
tambe na Divi Phoenix Aruba como IT Technician .
Awor un reto nobo a cuminsa, despues di 11 aña mi ta bek den e districto unda mi a
desaroya. Contento di a bolbe cas bek, cu mas gana mi ta dispuesto na duna tur mi
conocimento den forma di mi servicio como IT medewerker na Instituto Pedagogico
Arubano (IPA).
Computer y tur cu tin di haber cu technologia ta mi trabou y mi hobby na mesun
tempo. Den mi tempo liber, banda di explora cu computer mi ta gusta haci deporte
manera; baseball, volleyball, paintball y futbol, pues pa un help out semper mi lo
ta dispuesto pa duna un man na IPA den esaki. Durante mi infancia mi tabata
practica baseball y na Hulanda tambe mi tabata tin e placer di forma parti di
Caribe un team na Groningen durante periodo di mi studio.
Pa finalisa, mi ta hopi contento di a wordo acepta na IPA pa asina duna lo mihor di
mi servicionan y forma parti di e team. E prome meta ta pa purba logra minimalisa
tur problema cu computer y percura pa IPA den un futuro cercano por difruta di
un tremendo computer network.

CENSO 2010: IPA telt mee

Dit najaar vindt een nieuwe volkstelling plaats: Censo 2010. Net
als tien jaar geleden werkt het IPA daar intensief aan mee. Om
onze samenleving te kennen is het belangrijk om je ogen en
oren te gebruiken in het hart van die samenleving: bij de mensen thuis, bij de kinderen die nu of later in onze (stage-)klassen
zitten.
Om deze redenen krijgen studenten uit leerjaar 1, 2 en 3 en docenten de gelegenheid om aan de volkstelling en aan de
(verplichtte) voorbereidende trainingsavond (4 uur) mee te
doen. Studenten ontvangen daarvoor van het CBS de gewone
tellervergoeding van afl. 1200,- (bruto) en een kleine benzinevergoeding. Het IPA beloont het meedoen met een studiepunt
uit het vormingsgebied Hende y Comunidad. Op die manier
wordt je twee maal beloond voor één inspanning.

De censo vindt plaats tussen 29 september en 6 oktober. De eerste drie dagen vallen onder schooltijd. Op het IPA worden in die
dagen geen lessen gegeven. De laatste dagen vallen in het
weekeinde en de oktobervakantie. Die dagen tel je dus in je eigen tijd.
Voor de studenten in leerjaar 4 bekijken we op dit moment de
mogelijkheden om ook mee te doen. Studenten die niet kunnen
of willen deelnemen aan de Censo krijgen een vervangende opdracht met een studielast van 1 studiepunt.
Als Teller wordt je waarschijnlijk ingezet in de regio waar je
woont. Dit om benzinekosten (en milieuvervuiling) te besparen.
Anderen worden mogelijk ingezet om vanuit het IPA te tellen,
want het IPA zelf is – net als veel andere scholen – telcentrum.
