What I Have I Give to You (Acts 3:6)
Greetings in the Lord!
It wasn’t much for Jesus to ask – just to borrow Peter’s fishing boat (and some of
his time) so the people pressing in on Him could hear the Word of God. Peter was
no doubt happy to comply – Jesus had recently cured his mother-in-law and he
was glad to “return the favor.”
My own memories of life at Notre Dame Catholic Church and School testify that
this generation, too, wishes to lend a “boat” or a hand to Jesus’ ministry. Our team
and staff at parish and school serve with a deep sense of vocation – and for wages
far below scale. Countless parishioners staff meetings for many ministries, praying
and planning in order to bring about God’s presence among us – like Isaiah’s vision
of God from today’s first reading. Catechists announce God’s Gospel to the next
generation; societies keep long-held religious values alive; our annual Festival is
supported by selfless servants; and faithful ministers assist in the full participation
of God’s people in our Sunday feast. In addition, the ministry of St. Peter upon the
Water calls us to reflect on Jesus the Word – what He says and what He does.
Moreover, the parish’s financial reports indicate Notre Dame’s willingness to sacrifice financially in order to support our parish ministries. I am deeply grateful, because this generous response to stewardship flows from gratitude for what God
has first done for us. And today we are also invited to partner with our Archbishop
in supporting his ministry of service to the entire Archdiocese of San Antonio.
Please pledge something to the Archbishop’s Appeal for his use.
Grateful generosity is the appropriate response of those who fully understand their
predicament – as did Isaiah in today’s first reading and Peter in today’s second
reading. Isaiah’s words especially moved me at my ordination: “I am a man of unclean lips.” Is this not clearly depicted in the real world around us? Yet it is also
true that we “have seen J the Lord of hosts,” and we have been forgiven and
cleansed. Peter understood Isaiah’s words, too, for he begged Jesus, “Depart from
me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” Not that Jesus wasn’t aware of this – He knew
Peter’s sin better than Peter did. But sinfulness didn’t keep God from calling Isaiah, nor did it keep Jesus from calling Peter, nor does it stop God from calling us.
We are sinners, but we have been redeemed, and our one response is thanksgiving – to pledge not a portion of who we are or what we have, but our entire lives.
We are God’s. Everything. No strings attached. No reservations. In grace we are
healed. In grace we surrender. In gratitude may we, the people of Notre Dame
Catholic Church and School, offer our support to our great Archbishop Gustavo
and the God he serves so faithfully!
In Jesus,
Fr. Mike
TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading — In a vision Isaiah
is called to be a messenger for the
LORD of hosts. Isaiah responds,
“Send me!” (Isaiah 6:1-2a, 3-8)
Psalm — In the sight of the angels I
will sing your praises, Lord (Psalm
138).
Second Reading — Paul reminds
us of the gospel he preached
through which we are saved, if we
believe it
(1 Corinthians 15:1-11 [3-8, 11]).
Gospel — Jesus directs Simon to
take his boat into deep water for a
miraculous catch of fish. Simon and
his partners leave all to follow Jesus

Padre Mike

St. Therese of Lisieux is the patroness of missionaries
although she never left her convent. She died at the
early age of 24, yet accomplished great things through
the power of prayer before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. The church made her the patroness of missionaries to emphasize this most important truth: One soul
coming before the Blessed Sacrament can change the
world! St. Therese said, “My mission is to make God
loved.” May she intercede for us in spreading Eucharistic Adoration throughout the world!
An adorer is needed for:
Tuesday 12:00 p.m.—1:00 p.m.
Saturday 1:00 a.m.—2:00 a.m.
Saturday 10:30 a.m.—11:30 a.m.

NOTES FROM THE HEART
The volunteers at St. Vincent de Paul on Broadway would
like to share with you our work that your donations and
thrift shop support make possible while keeping confidential the identity of our brothers and sisters in need.
The NUMBERS for the entire month of January 2016.
We handed out food for five meals to 1684 people. We
served 380 families with financial assistance which included vouchers for our thrift store in the amount of
$24,161. Gross sales before expenses for the thrift shop
was $22,147. Second Collection was $2700. We don't
horde.
The VOLUNTEERS numbering 94 logged
2,379
hours. For government accounting purposes a value of
$22 an hour is given for one hour of volunteering. Gold is
currently NOT $22 an ounce. Faithfully showing up with
willing hands, a smile, and love in our hearts is what
keeps service to those in need consistent. We strive to
be the hands of Christ while on our spiritual journey.
The FACES:
A trained nursing assistant had been looking for work for
two months and had depleted her savings. She had been
a private duty aide for three years. Her patient died. Her
heart was sad because she had come to love the patient. We were one of the agencies that assisted
her. She found a good job in a medical office during the
3rd month. She now donates to us when able so we can
continue to aide people temporarily in need.
A mother of three fled an abusive relationship in the big
city and was at a local shelter. Things were looking
up. Kids liked the smaller school and she had a job lined
up, but it entailed using her car. The car was being repossessed. We help with part of the payment and a volunteer privately paid the rest.
A single mom came into the store looking for an outfit to
wear to go on her first night out in many years. Budget
was very tight. She finally found a pair of pants on sale
for $1, a top from the 50-cent rack, and a $2 pair of sandals. A volunteer gave her one of her "Vinnie Bucks" to
buy earrings and a bracelet set. She looked a whole lot
better than the sweat pants and old Tee she shopped in.

BooksToBorrow
from the Notre Dame Parish Library are
available in the narthex of the church,
near the bell tower door. We are currently featuring books for Lenten meditation. Mary Foley offers us a look at
40 Day Journey with Julian of Norwich, assembled by Lisa E. Dahill.
Each day starts with a short writing
from the Saint, followed by a Bible verse
to meditate on, questions to ponder,
and a psalm fragment. For those who
want to do prayer journaling, this book
also includes reflections for your journal. Each day’s writings end with prayers, broken into two sections. The first
is prayers for Hope and Healing; the last
is a prayer for that day.
There is a section on hints for keeping a
prayer journal. Also included is a short
biography of St. Julian, which in itself
is a great reason to check this book out.
She is a fascinating person whose writings are the earliest work known to be
written by a woman in English.
From her writings, for day 7:
Our Lord wants to have the soul truly
converted to contemplation of him and of
all his good works in general. For they
are most good, and all his judgements
are easy and sweet, bringing great rest
the soul which is converted from contemplating blind (human) judgements to the
judgements, lovely and sweet, of our
Lord God...”

This year, Boys Scout Sunday Mass will
be at the 5pm Mass on Sunday, February
7th. We will have an area sectioned off
for scouts and their families-both past &
present.
The Boy Scouts of America annually celebrates its founding on February 8, 1910. Scout Sunday is a part
of this and was added in the mid-1940s. The Scout Sunday
tradition makes people in houses of worship aware of Scouting
and allows Scouts to live out their “Duty to God” pledged each
week.
Please send Amy Chapman an RSVP via email or cell phone
(830 329-1913) of how many in your family will attend and if
you presently have an active Cub or Boy Scout who is interested
in being an usher, greeter, gift presenter or manning the table
