Welcome to Saint Lawrence the Martyr Catholic Parish Community. Rich in diversity, we, the people of Saint
Lawrence the Martyr Catholic Parish, are called to be one in living the Word, one in praying, one in
celebrating the presence of God, and one in serving all. Guided by the Holy Spirit, we strive to embody the
presence of God and to continue the mission of Jesus in the world today, bringing about the reign of God.

Mrs. Priscilla Murphy
Dear Parishioners, Families, and Friends, It is with great pleasure that I write this article about Mrs. Priscilla Murphy. As you may know, Priscilla is about to commence her retirement after serving as the Principal of St. Lawrence Elementary and Middle Schools for 15 years over two assignments. During her two principalships she has been responsible for exceptional standards of education for hundreds of students. Furthermore, Priscilla has helped mold these students into hard working, informed and responsible citizens in their communities. Priscilla dedicated her life to educating the whole child and has developed a comfortable, safe learning environment in which they could grow. One of her strongest visions was that of creating a school with a strong Catholic identity, a school highly competitive in the demanding world of Silicon Valley, one that is financially stable and able to withstand economic hardship, a school growing with increased enrollment, complemented by quality educators like we have today, and a school that provides a quality balanced, Catholic education for all students. The final school mass of this year is in honor of our Principal, Mrs. Priscilla Murphy. Like a Graduation, this is both a celebration and a commencement. We are giving thanks and celebrating the many gifts Mrs. Murphy has bestowed upon this community over the many years of her dedicated service as she commences her new journey into retirement. We wish her well and know that with the knowledge, skills and experiences she has given the faculty and staff of St. Lawrence, we will continue to work in developing her vision for many years to come. Please join all of us as we celebrate and thank Mrs. Murphy for everything that she has done for us all at the regular daily Holy Mass at 8:30a.m. June 11, 2010. Many, many lives have been positively affected because of the work of this fine leader and many of you will want to show your appreciation with cards, letters and gifts. After Mrs. Murphy’s first tenure as principal, the Priscilla Murphy Scholarship Fund was established in 1999. I know one of the best gifts of thanks she could receive would be a donation to this scholarship which provides tuition assistance to families in need. There will be an opportunity to donate at the collection during our end of year Mass. It is with high praise, deep respect, and fondest admiration that I wish Mrs. Priscilla Murphy a blessed retirement.
Phil Dolan Nuevo Principal de las Escuelas Primaria e Intermedia de San Lorenzo Spanish Translation by: Sr. Josefina Montalvo, rscj Brothers and sisters: I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night he was handed over, took bread, and, after he had given thanks, broke it and said, "This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me." In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes. June 6, 2010 - The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

Feast of Corpus Christi –
Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ
by Deborah Ferry The Feast of Corpus Christi (Latin for Body of Christ) honors the Eucharist. It is held on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday or on the following Sunday. Its celebration on a Thursday is meant to associate it with Jesus' institution of the Eucharist during the Last Supper, commemorated on Holy Thursday. The feast is officially known as the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. The appearance of the Feast of Corpus Christi was primarily due to the petitions of the thirteenth‐century Augustinian nun Juliana of Liège. From her early youth, Juliana had devotion for the Blessed Sacrament and always longed for a special feast. This desire was said to have been increased by a vision of the Church under the appearance of the full moon having one dark spot, which signified the absence of such a solemnity. In 1208 she reported her first vision of Christ in which she was instructed to plead for the institution of the Feast of Corpus Christi. The vision was repeated for the next 20 years but she kept it a secret. When she eventually relayed it to her confessor, he relayed it to the bishop. In 1264, Pope Urban IV declared Corpus Christi to be a feast celebrated throughout the church. A new liturgy for the feast was composed by St. Thomas Aquinas. This liturgy has come to be used not only on the Feast of Corpus Christi itself but also throughout the liturgical year at events related to the Blessed Sacrament. The hymn Aquinas composed for Vespers of Corpus Christi, Pange Lingua, is also used on Holy Thursday during the procession of the Blessed Sacrament to the altar of repose. The last two verses of Pange Lingua are also used as a sepa‐
rate hymn, Tantum Ergo, which is sung at Bene‐
diction of the Blessed Sacrament. Until the two feasts were combined in 1970, separate feasts existed for the Body of Christ and the Most Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ, with a feast on July 1. June 6, 2010 - The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

SOCIAL CONCERNS By: Jim Balquist On Racism and Discrimination
The newspapers are characterizing more and more of the actions in society today as racism and discrimination – starting with current and planned future actions against Hispanics related to the Arizona immigration legislation. Next, the murder of Hispanic Luis Rodriguez in Shen‐
andoah, PA by white “teens (who) taunted the undocumented worker with racial epithets, pummeled him to the ground and then kicked him in the head, court documents charge. He died in a hospital two days later.” The disturbing pattern continued at a recent Nebraska H.S. Championship soccer game. After the game, a basically all‐white team (the win‐
ners) from Lincoln and some of their supporters chased after the other (60% Hispanic) team from Omaha, and threw simulated copies of green cards into the air while taunting the Omaha team. To passively note that this is an act against human dignity does not even come close to how I feel we should react to this outrage. NOTE: the simulated green cards were made by the students in school during school time. ‐ ‐ ‐ According to a recent Mercury News Op‐Ed article by Leonard Pitts about a study in a series on “Black or White: Kids on Race” on CNN, “black children were presented two dolls, similar in appearance except that one was dark and the other light. (When) asked which doll was bad, stupid or ugly, most of the black kids picked the black doll. (When) asked which was good, smart or pretty, they chose the white one.” In another study, a 5‐year old white girl (one of many boys and girls in the study, both black and white) was interviewed by a researcher as her mother sat out of sight. She was shown images (not dolls) of children whose color ran from very light to very dark. “(When) asked to point out the ‘good child’, she touched the lighter skinned figure. ‘Why is that the good child?’ she was asked. ‘Because I think she looks like me’, the little girl said. “(When) asked to point out the ‘bad child’, she touched the darkest image on the paper. ‘And why is that the bad child?’; ‘Because she’s a lot darker’, the little girl said. ‐ ‐ and watching, the mother softly wept.” Reflection: Why do you think the mother wept? Should we weep? Should we act? If YES, how? . . . May the spirit of Jesus be with us as we consider these questions. Page 6
