ENCOUNTER THE JOY OF THE GOSPEL
Year One (2014): Individuals transformed by Encounters
3rd Sunday of Advent
"There is one among you whom you do not recognize." With
these words, John the Baptist was referring to his cousin, Jesus.
Although Jesus had not yet begun his public ministry, John knew
that Jesus was the Messiah. And it was John's mission to prepare
other people to recognize that fact.
John and Jesus had first "met" in utero when Mary visited Elizabeth. Even from that early moment, John understood the significance of encountering Jesus. The Gospel of Luke tells us that the
baby "leaped for joy" in Elizabeth's womb when the expectant
Mary approached. Now that these two babies were grown men,
John was still in the business of recognizing Jesus' significance.
He describes his cousin as "the one who is coming after me,
whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie." John knew that
Jesus was something special. And he made it his goal to lead
others to the same realization.
Of course, as Christians in the twenty-first century, we already
know that Jesus is the Messiah. But John's words still raise an
important question for us today: Do we recognize the real significance of Jesus? Do we take him for granted, or do we appreciate
the gift of salvation that he offers us? Today's Gospel reading
tells us that John came "to testify to the light." Do we let the light
of Christ guide our way? Have we "made straight the way of the
Lord" by putting Jesus first in our lives?
Today as we light the third candle on the Advent wreath, we
would do well to reflect on the true light that came down from
heaven. Let us pray, as this holy season continues, that our minds
and hearts will be enlightened to grasp the true significance of
the coming of Christ.

We have just celebrated the Feast of the Immaculate Conception
but what is the Immaculate Conception? The Immaculate Conception
refers to the condition that the Blessed Virgin Mary was free from original sin from the very moment of her conception in the womb of her
mother, Saint Anne. We celebrate the Birth of the Blessed Virgin on
September 8; nine months before is December 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. It took centuries for the Catholic Church to declare the Immaculate Conception as doctrine. On December 8, 1854
Pope Pius IX declared it a dogma in his Apostolic Constitution Ineffabilis Deus. Pope Pius IX wrote that "We declare, pronounce, and define
that the doctrine which holds that the most Blessed Virgin Mary, in the
first instance of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege granted by Almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Savior of
the human race, was preserved free from all stain of original sin, is a
doctrine revealed by God and therefore to be believed firmly and constantly by all the faithful." A misconception some have is that Mary's
Immaculate Conception was necessary to ensure that original sin would
not be passed on to Christ. This was never a part of the teaching on the
Immaculate Conception. The Immaculate Conception represents
Christ's saving grace operating in Mary.
Worship Corner: The Eucharistic Prayer: The long prayer which follows brings us to the very center of the Mass and the heart of our faith.
While the words of the prayer may vary from Sunday to Sunday, the
prayer always has this structure: 1) We call upon God to remember all
the wonderful saving deeds of our history. 2) We recall the central event
in our history, Jesus Christ, and in particular the memorial he left us on
the night before he died. We recall his passion, death and resurrection.
3) After gratefully calling to mind all the wonderful saving acts God has
done for us in the past, we petition God to continue those deeds of
Christ in the present. We pray that we may become one body, one spirit
in Christ.
What St. Augustine’s Church is doing this Advent
We are looking for “Stars”. We want this to be an “action” Advent –
doing “Good Deeds”. Everyone is being challenged to do “Good Deeds”
this Advent and to write about them on “stars” that are in the back of
church to the left as you are walking out of church. (If we are out of stars,
write it on a piece of paper and we will transfer them to a star later when
they come in.) There is a “Star Catcher” box to collect these “Good
Deed” stars. These stars will then be placed on the big Christmas tree
that is up by the altar during Christmas Season. The goal is to have so
many stars that we can’t see the tree!!! Doing “Good Deeds” for Advent
will not stop at Christmas. It will carry on through the Christmas Season
and maybe it will become an everyday habit of doing “Good Deeds” each
and every day.

EveryWoman is an evening reading/study group for women of all ages
exploring ways and words of wisdom. We are doing a DVD series

WINGS’ (Women In God’s Spirit)— This is a weekly ministry for the
women of the parish. It includes a different speaker each week, discussion, great food, and wonderful social time with our St. Augustine women. Please feel free to join us any Wednesday morning at 9:45am in the

Elementary Sunday L.I.F.E. (Living In Faith Everyday). The next sessions is today, Dec. 14th, then off for Christmas break. January sessions are

The FOOD PANTRY will be closed the Saturdays after Christmas
and before New Years. We are in constant need of bottled or canned fruit
juice, canned peas, mixed vegetables, tomatoes and carrots, canned fruit,
and toilet paper. Many items we purchase on a regular basis can be purchased at the local “dollar stores”. Dry beans, shampoo, bar soap, laundry
detergent, toothpaste, rice, instant potatoes, Sunny D, syrup, pancake mix,
grape and strawberry jelly are all examples of items we always need that
can be purchased for just $1.00! Thanks for all your continued support.

MARCH FOR LIFE—Council 6189 Knights of Columbus is once again

Questions for the Third Sunday of Advent
“The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed
me...” Recall the times when you were anointed with holy oils in the name
of God through the sacraments of the Church. Do you still feel the Spirit of
our Lord within you? What will you do to become more aware of the presence of God in and around you every moment of the day?
The winning ticket for the Women’s Guild basket of cheer will be
drawn after the 11:15am mass on Sunday, Dec. 14th.
Next Sunday Dec. 21st is New Member Welcome & Registration for
Catholics wishing to register begins immediately following the 8:30am

Colecta Anual Diocesana 2014: Nuestra Fe esta Viva en el Amor
Hasta el 5 de diciembre, solo 323 feligreses han comprometido dar
$48,714.50. Hay Sobres de la Solicitud anual con Tarjetas de Compromiso
en el Centro de Información. Es importante para todos nuestros feligreses
que completen una promesa. Pueden ser devueltos a la oficina de la
parroquia o en el canasto de ofrenda durante la misa. Gracias por su apoyo
continuo de los ministerios y programas importantes que son posibles
gracias a su generosidad a la Solicitud Anual.
El Arbol Para la Navidad
La distribución de los regalos a las familias será el miércoles, 19 de diciembre de 3pm—7pm y el viernes y sábado, 19 y 20 de
diciembre de 10am—2pm. ¡El sábado es el ultimo día de distribución
antes de la Navidad!
PROGRAMA DE VIDA (L.I.F.E) (Viviendo en Fe Cada Día)
Las próximas sesiones son el 7 y el 14, y después habrá receso para la Navidad. Las sesiones en enero son el 4, 11, y 25. Recuerde, los padres siempre son bienvenidos para estar en la sesión con su hijo(a), y/o ayudar en la
sesión.

1. Ser miembros inscritos de la parroquia (no menos de 6

REFLEXIONES
3er Domingo de Adviento
El Evangelio de hoy tiene una pregunta controversial para el protagonista: "¿Quién eres tú?" Se ve claramente que Juan no anda
en búsqueda de poder ni de popularidad. Estas consideraciones
hacen que su figura de profeta crezca. Juan podría haber contestado lo siguiente: "Miren, yo no soy el Mesías, pero Dios me
ha encomendado una misión muy difícil: preparar el camino de
su Enviado". Sin embargo, no siente la necesidad de impresionar
a sus oyentes, y contesta desde el fondo de su corazón: "Yo soy
la voz que grita en el desierto: 'Enderecen el camino del Señor',
como anunció el profeta Isaías".
¿Somos los cristianos de hoy voces que claman en el desierto de
nuestra sociedad? ¿Anunciamos, enderezamos y limpiamos lo
que estorba en nuestra persona, familia y sociedad? ¿Somos de
los que preparamos la venida del Señor con dignidad y respeto?
Juan Bautista nos invita a resistir las tentaciones, la autosuficiencia, el gloriarnos de ser importantes, pues el que viene es más
grande que nosotros. Las lecturas de hoy nos hablan de alegría y
regocijo. ¡Ya está aquí! Y la alegría es contagiosa. ¿Hemos
hecho justicia para los oprimidos? ¿Qué respuesta vamos a dar?
Pidamos en esta Eucaristía el saber regocijarnos en la alegría de
saber que hemos cumplido con el deber de la misión de discípulos que tenemos en el mundo. Juan Bautista cumplió al pie de la
letra lo que Dios le pedía: dar testimonio de la luz. En otras
palabras, dar testimonio de Cristo en cualquier circunstancia que
estemos viviendo. ¿Conoces a alguna persona que hace eso?
¡Imítala!

favor deje el salón tal cómo estaba cuando llegó.
Por ejemplo: Si hay 5 mesas establecidas cuando llegue, por
favor asegúrese de que hay 5 mesas establecidas cuando se vaya.
Por favor, tenga en cuenta, que su grupo no es el único grupo que
utiliza la clase durante la semana. Gracias por ser respetuoso de
las necesidades de otros grupos que utilizan nuestra iglesia.
PARA SU INFORMACIÓN Y RECORDATORIO…
Esto es un recordatorio que no se traiga comida ni bebida en la
Iglesia. Se les agradece mucho su atención a este recordatorio. Nosotros sabemos que ustedes quieren que la Iglesia se vea lo mejor que
pueda por muchos años más. Hemos sido bendecidos con un
maravilloso edificio y la iglesia. Esta bendición permite que muchos
grupos diferentes se reúnan aquí y a venerar. Por lo tanto, la
próxima vez que su grupo se reúna, por favor, tenga en cuenta el
siguiente grupo que vaya a utilizar el espacio. Por favor, limpie y
devuelva las mesas y las sillas a su ubicación original. Respetemos

Lo que la Iglesia San Agustín está haciendo este Adviento:
Estamos buscando “estrellas”. Queremos que esto sea un Adviento de
“acción” - haciendo “Buenas Obras”. Esto es un reto para todos hacer
una “Buena Obra” este Adviento y escribir sobre ellos en las “estrellas”
que están en la parte de atrás en la Iglesia (al salir de la iglesia—a mano
izquierda). Hay una caja que dice “Receptor de Estrella” para colectar
estas estrellas de “Buenas Obras”. Estas estrellas se pondran en el árbol
grande que está al lado del altar durante la temporada de Adviento /
Navidad. ¡La meta es de colectar tantas estrellas que no se vea el arbol!
Haciendo “Buenas Obras” para el Adviento no terminará en la Navidad.
Seguirá y quizá se convertirá un hábito de hacer “Buenas Obras” cada
día.
