Math-a-thon is back!
Over 50 students have volunteered
this year to help raise money for
St. Jude’s Children’s Research
Hospital. It costs $1.8 million
dollars to run St. Jude’s every day.
To help with this expense, students
will raise money by collecting
donations and completing math
from their math-a-thon funbook. All donations and funbooks
are due by Friday, April 24th.
St. Jude offers some prizes for raising large amounts of money.
In addition, Ms. Wiechec will buy an ice cream treat for any
student that raises $5 or more. The student that raises the most
in the whole school will receive a gift card to the store or
restaurant of their choice.

Through this fundraiser, Hufford has raised approximately $1,000 a year for the past three
years. In an effort to outdo ourselves, Ms. Wiechec has added a twist to this year’s event. In
honor of Pi Day (March 14th), thirty-one teachers have volunteered to get a pie in the face.
Volunteers include 10 sixth grade teachers, 9 seventh grade teachers, 4 eighth grade teachers
and all IE teachers. Mrs. Surprenant and Mrs. Seddon also volunteered themselves for each of
the four grade level lunches. To participate, students donated money to their “favorite”
teacher’s bucket during lunch periods from March 9th through the 19th. Students who donated a
dollar or more got a raffle ticket. Raffle tickets were used to determine which student got to
throw the pie. The teacher from each grade level with the most money in their bucket got a pie thrown in their face
at lunch on March 20. The Pi Day fundraiser brought in $282.30 for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. The
“winning” teachers and grade level totals are as follows:
6th grade– Mr. Kikos— $73.24
7th grade– Mr. Stevenson— $49.00
8th grade– Mrs. Walker— $42.26
IE– Katie, Melissa and Caitlin— $117.80

Student Book Review
The Dragon Codex
Series by
R.D. Henham
Recently, I read the
“Red Dragon Codex”
which is the first in
a series of ten
books. This book has action, drama,
suspense, and comedy in just the right
proportions. This is a tale of a wicked
red dragon who plots revenge, kidnaps
a seer, and sets a boy named Mudd on
a rescue mission. There are all sorts of
monsters and many perils along the
way. I hope you find this book as thrillingly enjoyable as I did.

Ten new teachers have joined the Hufford Junior High
staff this year. Veteran staff and students alike are
thrilled to see our Trojan Family
expanding! Throughout the year, the newsletter staff will
be profiling new teachers. We know you’ll love them just
as much as we do!

Q: What made you want to become a
teacher?
A: I knew I wanted to teach when I was 16 years old. I
was working as a swim instructor. That’s when I knew.
Q: Where did you earn your teaching degree?
A: I graduated from Elmhurst College for my B.A. I
have a 6-12 grade endorsement for English and my
Master’s in Educational Administration.
Q: Where did you teach before Hufford?
A: My first teaching job was in 2001 at Minooka High
School. I taught 12th grade English and 10th, 11th, and
12th grade speech communications. I taught there for
six years. I also taught at Patriot High School in
Riverside, California. I taught 9th grade English there.
I also developed the speech program and I was the
newspaper advisor.
Q: Have you enjoyed teaching at Hufford so far?
A: Yes, absolutely! My job is sweet. I love the people I
work with. They’re great.
Q: How did it feel going from a long-term sub last
year to having your own
classroom?
A: I taught for seven years before
this. There wasn’t a difference. I took
a break for four years to raise my
youngest son.

A través de este evento, Hufford ha recaudado aproximadamente $1,000 al año durante los

Recientemente, he leído el "Dragón Rojo

Q: ¿Qué te hizo querer convertirte en una
maestra?
R: Yo sabía que quería enseñar cuando tenía 16
años. Yo trabajaba como instructora de natación.
Fue entonces cuando lo supe.
P: ¿Dónde obtuvo el título de maestra?
R: Me gradué del Colegio Elmhurst con mi licencia de maestra. Tengo aprobación para enseñar la materia de inglés en
los grados 6 - 12 y mi maestría en Administración de
Escuelas.
P: ¿Dónde enseñaste antes de Hufford?
R: Mi primer trabajo de maestra fue en 2001 en la Escuela
Secundaria de Minooka. Enseñé ingles en el grado 12 y
comunicaciones en los grados 10, 11 y 12. Enseñé allí
durante seis años. También enseñé en Patriot High School
en Riverside, California. Enseñé 9no grado inglés allí. También desarrollé el programa de comunicación y era la asesora
de prensa.
P: ¿Ha disfrutado dar clases en Hufford hasta ahora?
R: Sí, absolutamente! Mi trabajo es dulce. Me encanta la
