En el marco de la Ceremonia de Entrega de Certificados de la Universidad
de Cambridge, el BRITÁNICO otorgó la Beca a la Excelencia a Juliet Martínez
y Esther Paredes, que viajarán a Londres durante un mes, con todos los
gastos pagados, para complementar su aprendizaje en la prestigiosa
escuela de idiomas International House. En este año el BRITÁNICO ha
entregado 14 becas.

Piero Costa, ganador de la Beca a la Excelencia 2008-III, tuvo la oportunidad de viajar a Londres en julio de este año y nos cuenta
su maravillosa experiencia:

Despite having been in a place where distances are measured
in miles and the currency is the pound sterling, there are
things that didn’t change: among them, the pride of
being Peruvian, the satisfaction of getting through several
situations on my own, the great surprise at everything new
and culturally different and, last but not least, my gratitude

En nuestro auditorio de Surco se llevó a cabo la final del
concurso Malditamerican Pidol 2009, organizado por el
programa Mañana Maldita, de Radio Planeta. Asimismo, la
animación del evento estuvo a cargo de los conductores del
divertido programa, Gonzalo Torres y Daniel Marquina.

El pasado octubre se llevó a cabo nuestra auditoría externa
anual programada y realizada por SGS del Perú. Esta vez
la visita era para pasar nuestra auditoría de seguimiento
referente al proceso de matrícula y poder ampliar nuestro
alcance hacia la gestión de estudios, call centre y marketing.
Fueron dos días y medio de auditoría en oficinas administrativas
y centros de enseñanza, los cuales la pasaron exitosamente.
Luego de la tensión del proceso, logramos ser recomendados
para la nueva certificación con relación al nuevo alcance:
planificación, control y ejecución de los procesos de matrícula,
gestión de estudios, call centre y soporte.

Dentro del proceso a Estudios se hizo mención a la labor de
desarrollo que realiza el área para la elaboración de sílabos,
exámenes y material académico e informativo, lo cual también
se adicionó al alcance actual.

to the BRITÁNICO for this incredible experience. Not only did
I have the opportunity of testing and improving my English
language level, but I was also impressed by breathtaking
urban and rural landscapes, such as the lovely town of Bath or
most of the famous buildings in London: the London Eye and
its stunning views, the vast British Museum, the absolutely
diverse Victoria and Albert Museum and the Tate Modern, as
well as smaller but really nice places, like the Wimbledon Lawn
Tennis Museum and the Chelsea FC Museum. I also had the
chance to meet people from completely different countries
and cultures, such as Japan, Libya, Portugal, Saudi Arabia,
Iran, Uruguay and Spain. To sum up, this month away from
home has been a totally incredible experience, because I could
see different lifestyles, and that’s why I’m completely grateful
to the BRITÁNICO.

Halloween in Lima

Have you ever wondered what it would feel like to walk
through a frightening aisle full of skeletons, spider webs,
monsters, coffins and more scary things? If so, you shouldn’t
have missed Halloween in Lima. The 23rd of October, the
doors of Lima showed how creative, imaginative and witty
our students were by taking part in an unusual contest based
on decorating doors.
We as teachers were really impressed when noticing how
motivated students were. Every single part of the doors was
covered with plastic spiders, cotton wool, candies, Halloween
messages and even hands coming out of the door. There
were also doors about Peruvian Creole music.
Although we had to choose two winners, we realized that
our students’ enthusiasm was the best reward.
A technological era –

Facebook, Myspace, Orkut, Plurk… all of them are social
networking services which give you the chance to keep
in touch with your friends and family but… have you ever
thought of becoming friends with famous people such as
Ashton Kutcher, Kevin Spacey or Britney Spears? Twitter is
kind of a mini online diary where you can see what others are
up to. For example, the 30th of September, Stephen Fry, British
actor, writer and narrator of the Harry Potter audiobooks
wrote: “I’m as excited as a dog with a new bottom. Just got
hold of the new Fuji 3D camera!”
As you can see, you can follow people on Twitter but also
follow TV programmes such as Britain’s got Talent, Project
Runway or the BBC news, among others.
This has become another way to learn new vocabulary, improve
your reading and be in contact with real-life language, so,
if you are really into technology like we are in Pueblo Libre,
don’t miss this opportunity to excel yourself.

En el mes de octubre realizamos un concurso de historias de
terror entre los alumnos de Juniors de frecuencia sabatina.
Recibimos varias historias que no solo demostraban la
creatividad de los alumnos al inventar su historia de terror, sino
que además aplicaban los conocimientos adquiridos del idioma.

El día 28 de octubre se realizó en Monterrico una sesión
dirigida a nuestros docentes, a cargo de la profesora Selma
Sotomayor, durante la cual compartió algunas ideas prácticas
recopiladas de su amplia experiencia como también nuevos
conocimientos adquiridos en los cursos a los que asistió en
Inglaterra recientemente. Asimismo, pudimos contar con la
grata presencia de nuestra gerente de Entrenamiento, Pilar
Ferreyros, que hizo importantes aportes durante la sesión.
Gracias Pilar, Selma y profesores por su valiosa asistencia a
esta enriquecedora sesión.

One day the children went to a Halloween party. It was very
boring so they decided to go to a friend’s house. In the street
they found a haunted house. They went into the house and
it was very dirty.
One child talked about a legend about a man named Harry
Potter, who had lived in that house, and who had never
known his parents. One day he saw a white lady, who had a
ghostly appearance; she used to walk in the garden at night.
When the children heard about the legend, they were very
scared and decided to walk around the house. First they went
to the kitchen where they found a lot of blood. Then they
went to the bedroom but it was strange. After some time
they went to the library, where there were a lot of books and
desks. One desk had blood and three knives. The children
were scared and they saw ghosts who came out of a book so
they ran and ran to the garden. The ghosts followed them.
The children ran to get in the house but the door was closed.
Finally the ghosts took the children… The people said, “We
never saw the children again”.

Como parte de las actividades realizadas en el mes de octubre,
se organizó un concurso en el cual los alumnos pusieron
en práctica su creatividad decorando un polo y creando un
eslogan con el tema de Halloween.
Los alumnos ganadores fueron del Intermedio 6 de las 6.00
p.m., de la profesora Silvana Montesinos, que se hicieron
acreedores a un happy hour en la cafetería de nuestro centro,
y las profesoras participantes recibieron unos presentes.

Borja teachers. It was a session full of good ideas, precise tips

alumnos algunos aspectos de la cultura británica mes por mes
en un workshop que denominó A Calendar of British Culture.

That’s one of the facts we learnt from the Halloween contest
that took place in Miraflores in October. Almost 10 groups
of students prepared wonderful boards which included
information we didn’t know about this popular celebration.
The winners were Miss Angelica Morales’ B05 students, who
prepared a creative and original board with recycled material!
Pudimos aprender que hay una Fiesta del Panqueque, la cual
se celebra en víspera de ayuno de Cuaresma, y se relata que
todos los cristianos aprovechaban esta oportunidad para
consumir alimentos antes del ayuno.
A mediados de mayo se celebra la Competición de Flores
de Chelsea, en la que todos tienen que lucir flores en su
atuendo… ¿se imaginan cuán colorida es esta celebración?

En junio está el Desfile de la Bandera para celebrar el
aniversario de la reina. Los aficionados al tenis también
pueden disfrutar del Campeonato Wimbledon.

A finales de agosto está el Carnaval de Notting Hill, el cual se
centra en un desfile que recorre el barrio del mismo nombre.
Se caracteriza por su multiculturalidad: hay comida, danzas,
bailes de disfraces, expresiones artísticas de todo tipo.
Hay una actividad benéfica llamada Red Nose Day, para
recaudar fondos para personas del África, que este año fue
celebrada el 13 de marzo.
Miles de personas se reúnen para celebrar el solsticio de
verano en Stonehenge, al sur de Inglaterra, considerado
como un lugar misterioso.
En noviembre, se celebran la Apertura Oficial del Parlamento
por la reina (lleno de carruajes y nobles) y la Remembrance
Sunday Ceremony, en la que la realeza y el primer ministro
honran a muertos y heridos en las guerras.

As teachers we are always in search of new ways of developing
and maintaining our students’ motivation. Specifically,
Camacho teachers’ goal during October and November is
ENHANCING STUDENTS’ MOTIVATION, and in our intention
of attaining real student involvement, some activities were
carried out:

on their Life Stories.
En diciembre no puede faltar el espíritu navideño cantando
villancicos en la Trafalgar Square frente al Norweigian
Christmas Tree, regalo de Noruega por la ayuda británica
durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
Como ven, este es sólo un corto recuento de algunas de
las celebraciones que se mencionaron en este workshop.
Agradecemos a Terry Kent por compartir con nosotros parte
de su cultura y a todos los que asistieron… ¡los esperamos en

Halloween. Children’s creativity and their English skills were
evident in a colourful board display.

I remember the first day I stepped
inside a BRITÁNICO centre, and it was
not as a teacher, but as a student. I
felt the incredible joy of a welcoming
atmosphere and the happiness that
all the members of this institution
show towards every single person.
Now that I am a teacher I can fully
understand why the staff at BRITÁNICO always have a
big smile on their faces and it is just because they feel so
identified with their place of work, and what’s more, they are
proud of being part of it.

El término de cada ciclo sabatino es siempre la marca de un
nuevo inicio. El pasado sábado 17 de octubre, un grupo de
entusiastas pequeños culminó con éxito el programa de Kids.
Ahora ya se encuentran en una nueva etapa y enfrentando un
nuevo reto en el programa de Juniors. Well done!!
El último día de clases sabatinas también brinda la
oportunidad de aprender algo más. Así lo demostraron
un grupo de alumnos de Kids 6 del turno de las 8:00 a.m.
que, haciendo uso del lenguaje aprendido y luego de haber
recibido su calificación, instaron a grandes y chicos a seguir
algunas reglas de seguridad a toda voz y con ayuda de
coloridos carteles.

The people you work with are always eager to help and we
feel motivated to become better teachers with the tools they
give us such as the BRITÁNICO Teachers’ Convention, several
courses and different activities that make us feel that this is
our second home.

A whole year has gone by but it
seems like yesterday when we entered
this Centre for the very first time.
A mixture of feelings overcame us:
excitement at teaching in the newest
BRITÁNICO branch, pride at being the
first teachers in an opening branch,
and nervousness because we knew it
was going to be a great challenge. It
was not only the fact that we were facing a new environment
but new technological devices as well.
Even though at that time we were very few teachers led by
a great team, our enthusiasm was enormous and due to the
warmth, comfort and integration, we do feel honoured to
work in such a great branch with such excellent people.

Los alumnos del Kids 5, haciendo un despliegue de su
creatividad y afición por el arte, pusieron en escena la obra
de teatro SAVE THE PLANET, bajo la dirección de la profesora
Erica Castro. Esta obra tenía por finalidad hacer tomar
conciencia sobre la importancia de cuidar nuestro Planeta y
proteger así la Naturaleza. Al evento asistieron los padres de
familia, quienes muy entusiasmados tuvieron la posibilidad
de disfrutar de una sesión previa de inglés, a cargo de la
profesora Claudia Daga.

A memorable experience

Butterflies in my stomach was what I first felt the first day at
the BRITÁNICO, back to studies after a long time.
Working, looking after my kids and studying at the same time
was not easy at all, but BRITÁNICO teachers encouraged me
to achieve this huge goal, not only cheering me up in words,
but with motivating classes.
Writing and listening exercises, progress tests, final exams,
made me push myself to do my best and I do really appreciate
the dedication, effort, passion and knowledge that each
BRITÁNICO teacher showed me during every single class.
Studying at the BRITÁNICO has been a memorable experience
I will never forget!!!

It was the 30th of July and I was about to do what
I had always dreamt of - to study in the UK. Not
only was my wish fulfilled, but I was also taught by
well-known teachers in two of the most prestigious
universities in the world.

Oxford, with its special enchantment and historic
buildings, turned my first fifteen days into an
awesome dream... Teachers from almost all over
the world were there like me, eager to learn and
discover other ways of thinking and living. We
saw each other all day during classes, lectures and
in the unavoidable coffee room. How can I ever
forget all those happy faces, fascinated by the
experience we were sharing?
Cambridge was quite different with its modern
buildings and large gardens, but equally charming
and relaxing. In both places I was able to meet the
authors of our teaching books, who to my surprise
are the most unpretentious and friendly people in
the world!
I also found it enriching to meet people with other
religious beliefs.
At the weekends my colleagues and I took
advantage of the free time and visited some
other cities like Bath, with its Roman remains and
beautiful Regency architecture; Stratford, the place
where Shakespeare was born and Southwold on
the east coast. Everywhere we went, we could
appreciate the friendly people and their way of life.
I had visited the UK before as a tourist, and it was
beautiful, but the trip in 2009 was the experience
of a lifetime.

Dos de nuestros profesores británicos comparten su vida y sus experiencias
con nosotros.
“The grass is always greener on the other side
of the fence”…

Alma Kori, San Borja Teacher
I was born in Kensington, London
in 1976. My first home was on
Holland Street, beside Holland Park.
I have always felt different to the
rest since birth, due to my unusual
upbringing. I have gathered that
perhaps my family have always
been perceived as eccentric and
bohemian due to my parent’s
mentalities, interests in art and
philosophies of life. My father is a
Jewish Londoner and my mother is
a catholic Limenian. Neither of them
at this stage of their lives, when they
met in the swinging 60’s, practised
their religions. Partly, this brought
the two together; in believing
differently to the rest within their
parents and grandparents beliefs. I
have therefore been brought up as
an atheist and from two culturally
diverse backgrounds.
My mother is very family orientated,
due to her South American
influences and with two brothers
and four sisters. Whereas my father
has learnt to be a family man and
with only one sister, who later in life
he became close to. My aunt lives
in Paris.
I have been brought up bilingually
to speak both English and Spanish.
My mother always spoke to us in
both languages. In fact, she spoke
twice: Once in Spanish and then
in English and vice versa! She is
quite patriotic, despite the fact she
arrived in London when she was
nineteen and never returned to
live; she’d return on holiday with
her husband, children and Peruvian
nanny, who also spoke to the three
of us in Spanish. She loves her life
in England and feels that it is her
adopted country.
At home our nanny always cooked
delicious Peruvian food for us and
on our birthdays we’d have Peruvian
parties with
English kids
who loved
the alfajores
and
triple
sandwiches!
My
father
disliked fish
when he met
my mother and now he has been
well educated to have a more varied
palate!
Initially, I came to Peru on holiday in
December 2007 and only returned
in March to close my business
as a children’s entertainer. I have
returned to England on holiday, as
I do feel after all that what I mostly
miss from England is the English
culture, mentality and beautiful
countryside. I also appreciate
everything that Peru offers, and
I know through experience, “The
grass is always greener on the other
side of the fence”. I have learnt
to appreciate the place where I
am and not compare, as they are
incomparable. What matters is how
you feel inside!
I was single, without any
responsibilities other than my
business and felt that if I didn’t live
in Peru at that point, I’d regret it
and I have never looked back since. I
have been here for almost two years
and have persevered a lot. I have
worked for charities working within
the Theatre; I have also worked in
private English schools and now I
have landed on my two feet at ‘El
BRITÁNICO’. I feel that here I am
making a full circle by merging
my two sides. ‘El BRITÁNICO’ is a
cultural institute and here I have
the opportunity to share my wealth
of knowledge being an EnglishSpanish-speaking girl in Lima who
has the Queen’s accent!

since my family discovered that we
would be coming to Lima. That
day our instincts told us to buy
every guide book, search every
website and watch every BBC
documentary. However, in the end,
we decided not to do any of them
- in fact we did very little research
at all.

My family knew that to really get to know your culture,
to really experience your traditions and to really find out
the thoughts and feelings of the Peruvian people, our first
impressions should not begin until we arrived.
Now we are here. Teaching the students of BRITÁNICO is
so enjoyable. Working with my new colleagues is such a
pleasure. Every day we meet new people. Every day we
discover something new about your way of life. Every day
is unique so every day is filled with a new first impression.

Con el objetivo de llevar la excelente
calidad de enseñanza del BRITÁNICO a las
personas de empresas y otras que debido
a su agenda recargada y horario variable
no podrían estudiar en nuestros centros
de enseñanza, nació hace 10 años el área
de Clientes Externos.

Es una experiencia gratificante para
cada uno de los miembros del equipo
de Clientes Externos ser parte del éxito
y los logros de cada uno de nuestros
alumnos al ver sus metas cumplidas, y es
que al identificar sus necesidades y adaptarnos a ellas, hacemos nuestros los
objetivos de nuestros clientes.
Es necesario resaltar que ninguno de nuestros objetivos podría realizarse de
no contar con un equipo humano tan profesional y comprometido dispuesto
a dar siempre lo mejor de sí. Va a través de estas líneas un reconocimiento
y agradecimiento especial a cada uno de los profesores y colaboradores
académicos y administrativos del Área por su invalorable apoyo, entusiasmo
y entrega al llevar a cabo de manera tan cabal la delicada labor de representar
al BRITÁNICO fuera de sus instalaciones.
Finalmente, no puedo dejar de mencionar a nuestra mayor motivación:
¡nuestros clientes! Gracias a todos por confiar en nosotros, por renovarnos

So many things are exciting and rewarding
about working at Clientes Externos and
catering for our most demanding and
motivated segment of students (clients!):
the business-person, the top professional,
the manager, who come to us with the
highest expectations of the course and
their teacher (our service).
For a start, we have our own programmes,
the star of which is called EFP (English for
Professionals). Our classes are mainly oneto-one or very small and it is possible to
follow up students’ progress over time.
This means I can focus on each of my
students, constantly adapting my teaching
to their specific professional needs, areas
of interest, capitalising on their strengths
and tackling their weaknesses, with a
broad flexibility of pace and timing. We
work together towards achieving their
goals, with an impressive success rate.
But the cherry on the cake is how much
I learn from my students, and not only
about different industries, companies and
disciplines; they are constantly teaching
me to see life and work from different
perspectives, which has had a great
influence on my personal and professional
development.
The way I see it,
it is a win-win
situation, where
the human factor
is the key.

Una maestría, un viaje al exterior o simplemente aprender un nuevo idioma son algunas de las razones por
las que nuestros clientes buscan cursos de inglés que se adapten a sus necesidades. Y en Clientes Externos
tenemos una amplia variedad de cursos, no sólo para ejecutivos sino también para profesionales y público
en general que deseen iniciarse en el aprendizaje del idioma inglés o perfeccionar lo ya aprendido.
En Clientes Externos sabemos que no hay nada más hermoso que ser parte del progreso de una persona;
por ello, nos alegramos junto con nuestros alumnos cuando alcanzan sus metas profesionales a través de
los cursos que ofrecemos, haciendo así del aprendizaje del inglés no sólo una experiencia educativa sino
también una enriquecedora experiencia de vida.

Al mirar diez años atrás, muchos recuerdos vienen a
mi memoria. Nuestros primeros clientes, empresas que
confiaron en ese naciente proyecto denominado In
Company. La pequeña oficina en Río de la Plata reunió
a nuestra primera jefa y tres profesoras que cimentaron
la base de lo que hoy es una gran realidad: Clientes
Externos.
A lo largo de este tiempo, varios jefes y profesores
han pasado por esta Área dejando su aporte valioso y consolidando nuestro
compromiso de dar una atención personalizada. Ser parte de este equipo ha
sido y es un reto. Somos el área itinerante que brinda al alumno un servicio
formal y efectivo dejando el sello del BRITÁNICO, bajo el lema: ¡Trabajo en
equipo, trabajo para todos!

meeting students’ very personal language needs
head-on. It is an adventure in helping them achieve in
English the self-reliance they typically exhibit in other areas of their academic
and professional life.
Every student is a world of objectives, drives and dedication. Their perspective
on work and life gives me perspective. Each embodies a very unique approach
to what it takes to fulfil the promise of a human life and make the world a
better place. I offer direction and encouragement – much like a coach. And
they take it as far as they are able and willing.
Working in the area is great, from the friendly and caring atmosphere all the

and challenging
experience. I teach
in
companies
and in this way I
represent the BRITÁNICO; I am aware that
I am its image so I always do my best. In
each company, I face different situations
according to the learning needs of the
students. You can have classes “one to
one” or with two or a few more students.
There are also a wide variety of courses
for them, such as Professional, Business,
Commercial, Tourism and others. This
is one of the reasons why our students
are satisfied with us because we can
offer the courses that they really need. I
remember once a student told me that
our centre was Clientes Especiales and
I think it is true! They are special for all
of us! And something important is that
in the academic and administrative area,
Flor, Dalila, Idina, Claudia and Consuelo
are always ready to give us the necessary
support and advice.
I feel really happy and proud of being part
of Clientes Externos.

I decided to study English at the BRITÁNICO with the
idea of improving my English knowledge before going to
England. Once there, I noticed how much I’d learnt and

opportunity

the office. From
the beginning I
welcomed

idea, knowing I would improve my English.
After all this time I can say that taking
classes as a student of the external client
area of the BRITÁNICO has enabled me to
improve my speech in English, which has
been very important to develop better
communication with my own clients from
other countries. I also have to mention
two important aspects of the teaching
methodology of the BRITÁNICO: teachers
who have a vast experience in business
English and the importance given to the
constant practice of speaking in English
