Jesus’ meticulous care in gathering up and confirming his disciples in faith after his Resurrection ought to give us great confidence in his love for all, even those who have walked away from him. The lesson for us is that without the gift of faith, even the obvious can seem obscure. This story in Luke also gives us the clue as to where to find the grace necessary to overcome our occasional cluelessness. We’re told that in the “breaking of bread” they recognized him. That term is widely considered to have been a kind of code term in the early Church for the celebration of the Eucharist. This narrative itself exhibits a form like that of the Mass. It begins with a Liturgy of the Word: “Beginning, then, with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted for them every passage of Scripture which referred to him.” It closes with a “breaking of the bread,” as happens in the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Through the Sacraments generally, and the daily Sacrament of the Eucharist particularly, the Church learns to see clearly what was formerly obscure. Resolution: As you read Scripture and receive communion this week, be open to the ways Jesus waits to reveal himself to you. Having received the Holy Spirit and having personally witnessed Christ’s Resurrection, Peter is a man on fire with faith. He speaks with confidence and authority, and although the rest of the Apostles are there, he has clearly become the spokesman. What St. Peter urges us to do is to have that same fire, that same commitment, so that our hearts can be burning within us with the knowledge of our salvation. Peter tells us to “Listen to my words” and “Hear my words.” We could add to that “Understand my words,” as we seek to live out our discipleship, our stewardship as followers of Christ. PlanningStudyResults In December 2013, the Diocese of Knoxville initiated a study to assess support for a potential diocesan capital campaign. Clergy and parishioners from across the Diocese were interviewed and surveyed by the Steier Group, a Catholic fundraising firm from Omaha, NE. Nearly 1,000 respondents provided feedback on topics including parish priorities, charitable initiatives, priest retirement, the Catholic Education Trust Fund, and the building of a new cathedral. The study showed that support for individual parish needs and diocesan initiatives such as charity, priest retirement, and the Catholic Education trust fund were of high importance. Support for a new cathedral, a key diocesan initiative proposed through the study, was mixed. Not surprisingly, this project rated strongest amongst Sacred Heart Cathedral parishioners, while many outside the Cathedral parish were uncertain of the need for a new cathedral and/or wary of the design/cost. Collectively the results of the study were overwhelmingly positive, revealing that 72% of respondents are in favor of a diocesan campaign. These results are well above the typical response rate of 50-55% in favor and far past the 60% benchmark needed to conduct a successful campaign. In addition, 68% of those who participated in the study expressed that they would financially support a diocesan campaign. Many respondents also indicated that they would be willing to serve in a leadership capacity if a campaign was to be conducted. Given these results and coupled with the feedback from the study, the Diocese of Knoxville has elected to move forward with a diocesan capital campaign but with a shift in focus toward individual parish needs. The campaign will also emphasize diocesan initiatives such as charity, priest retirement, and the Catholic Education Trust Fund. The cathedral element will remain as a diocesan initiative, though it will be a smaller component that what was initially proposed. The Diocese and Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish are currently considering options to revise the design, scope and cost of the cathedral project. The Cathedral Parish will lead the way with a capital campaign of its own, with 100% of the funds raised going toward the cathedral project. Funds raised by the Cathedral Parish and major gift contributors will fund a significant majority of the overall cost of the cathedral project. Preparations are currently underway and will continue over the next few months. The Steier Group has been retained to assist the Diocese in finalizing diocesan and individual parish initiatives and goals, creating communication materials, and finalizing the timeline for the campaign. The campaign itself will be conducted in waves, lasting approximately 6 months each starting in the early fall of 2014. Please continue to keep our Diocese in your prayers at this important time in our history. ThirdSundayofEaster:OurEmmausRoad•May4,2014 TOTUS TUUS - Back by Popular Demand! TOTUS TUUS is coming back!
