FASHION DESIGN. FOR THIS REASON, FOLLOWING HER
SECOND SON'S DEATH, SHE DECIDED TO CREATE HER
OWN COLLECTIONS. THE FIRST OF THESE WAS LAUNCHED
TO THE MARKET IN THE WINTER 2010 SEASON TO GREAT
SUCCESS, BEING ACCEPTED AT THE DIFFERENT
EXCLUSIVE STORES WHERE IT WAS EXHIBITED.

GRAN ACOGIDA Y ACEPTACIÓN EN LAS DIFERENTES TIENDAS
EXCLUSIVAS DONDE SE EXHIBIÓ.
¿Por qué decidió dedicarse al mundo de la moda?
El mundo de la moda es algo innato en mí, es la pasión de mi
vida. En el diseño está todo lo que amo, desde el momento de
búsqueda de un punto de partida para la creación –dibujo,
pintura y costura- a la mezcla de los diferentes materiales a
usar. Crear una colección es para mí una aventura exquisita.
¿Cuál era su experiencia profesional antes de dedicarse al
sector de la moda?
Soy nueva en el sector de la moda, pero puedo mencionar
que mientras estudiaba diseño de modas, una empresa organizó un evento de diseño, del que salí ganadora junto con dos
de mis compañeras de clase. Mi creación fue reproducida y
luego vendida en las tiendas de dicha empresa en Europa.
Asimismo confecciono vestidos completos y accesorios para
artistas y modelos de nuestro medio en Dinamarca. Además
he realizado diseños para Be Christensen, y la verdad, estoy
muy agradecida con ellos porque fueron ellos los que me
dieron el empuje para comenzar todo este gran sueño.
¿Dónde encuentra la inspiración para crear las colecciones?
Puedo contestar con solo una palabra: “Fusión”. Tengo la
suerte de venir de un país tan grandioso como el Perú, con
una cultura rica en todos los aspectos y de que desde hace

Why did you decide to enter the world of fashion?
The world of fashion is something I was born with, it's my
life's passion. Design contains all that I love, from the
moment of looking for a starting point for the creative
process -drawing, painting and sewing- to the combination
to the different materials to be used. Creating a collection
is an exquisite adventure for me.
What was your professional experience before you took
up fashion design?
I'm a newcomer in the world of fashion, but I should also
add that, while I was studying fashion design, a company
organised a design contest, in which me and two
classmates of mine were the winners. My creation was
reproduced and later sold at this company's stores in
Europe. I also make full dresses and accessories for artists
and models of our medium in Denmark. I have also done
designs for Be Christensen, and I must say that I'm most
grateful to them, as it was they who gave me the stimulus
to start this great dream of mine.
Where do you find your inspiration for creating
collections?
I'll answer that question with only one Word: “Fusion”. I've
been lucky to come from as great a country as Peru, whose
culture is rich in every way, and to have been living in a
country as marvellous and rich in opportunities as
Denmark for the last 10 years. The meeting of these two
old cultures is shown in my fabric line. My experiences in
Europe, Asia and America feed my inspiration, as the eyes
of a person who creates never rest, they're always in
search of new creative adventures.
Why did you decide to launch your own brand?
My business and design studies were oriented towards
making the leap to formalising an activity that would
create jobs for the people in my country, Peru, extremely
poor people in both the country and the city, and in need
of a helping hand with which they may escape their
poverty without charity alms.

10 años vivo en este país tan maravilloso y con tantas oportunidades como lo es Dinamarca. El encuentro de estas dos
antiguas culturas se manifiesta en mi línea de tejido. Mis
vivencias en Europa, Asia y América alimentan mi inspiración,
porque los ojos y la mente de una persona que crea nunca
descansan, siempre andan en busca de nuevas aventuras
creativas.
¿Por qué se decidió a lanzar su propia marca?
Mis estudios de negocio y diseño estaban orientados a dar un
salto hacia la formalización de una actividad que fomentara
trabajo para la gente de mi país, Perú, gente de extrema
pobreza del campo y la ciudad, quienes necesitan de una
mano solidaria, que les permita salir de la indigencia sin
recibir una limosna de caridad.
¿Podría explicar las tres líneas de producto de Patricia
Holstein: Lady´s Ladies, Knitwear y Accesorios?
Patricia Holstein es una línea de productos de alta calidad en
diseño y producción para mujer, Lady´s Ladies es la línea para
niñas bajo las mismas características, y mis accesorios son
creaciones únicas en las cuales se mezclan diferentes materiales como la seda, cuero y piedras semipreciosas como el
ónix, ágatas, etc.
¿Fabrica sólo para la temporada Otoño/Invierno?
Por el momento sí, pero estamos desarrollando una línea para
verano. Me gustaría hacer algo bonito y diferente con un
toque artesanal. Esperemos dé resultado.
¿Dónde realiza la producción? ¿Qué trabajadores utilizas
en Perú?
Realizamos la producción en la sierra del Perú y en zonas
pobres de Lima. Mi finalidad es dar trabajo a estas señoras
que no tienen educación, pero si el arte en el tejido, bordados, etc. Las preparamos y, una vez que están listas, les
entregamos el material.
¿Cuál es el nivel de calidad de las lanas que utilizan?
Las lanas que utilizamos son babay alpaca y Baby seda. Las
cuales son de muy alta calidad y además extraordinariamente
suaves al tacto.
¿Toda la producción es confeccionada a mano de forma
artesanal?
Si, nuestros productos son 100% hechos a mano. También
estamos desarrollando algunos diseños de prendas tejidas en
forma industrial pero con aplicaciones hechas a mano para
mantener así nuestro toque artesanal e ir de acuerdo con la
demanda de nuestros productos.
¿Consigue así un producto exclusivo?
Si, ya que siempre un tejido a mano es una pieza única por
muchos factores, sobre todo están hechos con amor.
Mis señoras tejen porque lo necesitan pero también porque
les gusta.

Could you tell us about the three product lines of
Patricia Holstein: Lady´s Ladies, Knitwear and
Accessories?
Patricia Holstein is a line of women's products of high
quality in design and production. Lady´s Ladies is the line
for girls, which is made under the same characteristics,
and my accessories are unique creations in which you can
find a combination of various materials such as silk,
leather and such semi-precious stones as onyx, agates, etc.
Do you only manufacture for the Autumn/Winter season?
For the time being, yes, but we are developing a summer
line. I'd like to make something pretty and different with a
handcrafted touch. Here's hoping it works out.
Where do you carry out the production of the articles?
What workers do you use in Peru?
We carry out our production in the Peruvian highlands
and in poor areas in Lima. My purpose is to give work to
these people, who are uneducated but skilled with fabrics,
embroideries, etc. We prepare them and, once they are
ready, we deliver the material to them.

What's the quality level of the wools used?
The wools we use are Baby alpaca and Baby silk, which are
very high-quality as well as extraordinarily soft to the touch.
Are all the products made by hand?
Yes, our products are 100% handcrafted. We're also
developing some designs of garments that are industrially
weaved but with handmade applications so as to maintain
our handcrafted touch and remain in accordance with the
demand of our products.
Do you achieve an exclusive product in this way?
Yes, as a handmade fabric is a unique piece due to many
factors, but especially because they are lovingly made. My
ladies weave because they have to, but also because they
like doing so.
¿En qué consisten las líneas Nasca?
Las Líneas de Nasca son una de las maravillas que se pueden
encontrar en mi país. Son rayas y figuras dibujadas sobre una
llanura seca (Pampa). Las rayas tienen dimensiones que van
desde pocos metros hasta cientos de metros. Para trazar
estas líneas los diseñadores Nasca aprovecharon las especiales condiciones meteorológicas y geológicas de este lugar.
La casi total ausencia de lluvias, combinado con el viento y el
suelo rico en minerales, formaron una delgadísima costra
oscura, la cual al ser removida se contrasta con el color claro
del subsuelo. De ese modo, las amplias líneas y figuras aparecen como trazos claros sobre un fondo oscuro que sólo
pueden ser observadas desde gran altura.
¿Con qué frecuencia viaja al Perú y qué tareas realiza allí?
Cuando mis padres vivían, aproximadamente tres veces al año.
Después pasamos a viajar anualmente, pero ahora viajo con la
misma frecuencia que la de antes. Lo hago sola, claro, ya que
tengo fuertes razones: visitar mis señoras tejedoras, chequear
la producción y saborear la exquisita comida peruana.

What do the Nasca lines consist of?
The Nasca lines are among the wonders to be found in my
country. They're stripes and figures drawn against a dry
plain (Pampa). The stripes are of sizes that range from
just a few metres to hundreds of metres. In order to draw
these lines, the Nasca designers took advantage of the
special weather and geographical conditions of this place.
The almost total absence of rains, in combination with the
wind and the mineral-rich soil, created a very thin red
layer, which, on being stirred, contrasts with the light
colour of the subsoil. In this way, the wide lines and figures
have the appearance of bright lines against a dark
background, which is something that can only be seen
from great heights.
How often do you travel to Peru and what tasks do you
perform there?
When my parents were still alive, I went there about three
times a year. We then went on to travel once a year, but
now I travel there as often as before. I do so on my own, of
course, as I have strong reasons: visiting my lady
weavers, checking up on production and tasting the
exquisite food of Peru.

Estamos sólo 6 meses en el mercado y ya tenemos alrededor
de 10 tiendas exclusivas en Dinamarca, Suecia y Noruega.
How many stores regularly purchase from Patricia
Holstein?
We've been 6 months in the market and we've got some 10
exclusive stores in Denmark and a few in Sweden and Norway.

Trabajamos sólo tiendas exclusivas debido al alto nivel del
producto en precio y calidad. Como nombres puedo citar en
Dinamarca: Petit Calin, Kalle Børnetøj & Sko, Lea Maria, Gitte
Green y Buch.
What type of stores market Patricia Holstein?
We only work in exclusive stores due to the product's high
level in both price and quality. The names in Denmark are
Petit Calin, Kalle Børnetøj & Sko, Lea Maria, Gitte Green
and Buch.
¿Cuáles son los objetivos de futuro de Patricia Holstein?
Me gustaría que el público me conozca por la calidad y particularidad de mis productos, que al comprar una prenda tejida
a mano sepan que están brindando apoyo laboral a la mujer
peruana de bajos recursos económicos en mi país. Pero,
claro, como diseñadora también mantengo el sueño y meta
de crear una línea de alta costura donde pueda mezclar productos muy finos como la seda, pieles, cuero, etc. Pero por
algo se tiene que empezar ¿verdad? Y me siento muy orgullosa de mis primeros pasos en el mundo de la moda.
What are the future objectives of Patricia Holstein?
I'd like to be known by the public for the quality and
particularity of my products. I'd want them to know that,
when buying a handmade fabric, they're also offering help
and jobs to the poorer women in Peru. But then, of course,
as a designer, I also hold on to the dream and objective of
creating a haute couture line in which I may combine
highly refined products such as silk, furs, leather, etc. But
you've got to start somewhere, right? And I'm very happy
with my first steps in the world of fashion.
