or whatever you do,
do everything for the glory of God.

For The Glory of God
The entire history of the Jewish people is directed toward one goal: that God might be glorified through the chosen people.
Christians, too, are called to “do everything for the glory of God.” In today’s scriptures Paul reminds us that the best way for us to
glorify God is to seek to benefit “the many,” as Christ did when he shed his blood for all of humankind.
The reading from Leviticus explains one way the Jews sought to benefit the many, by keeping lepers and leprosy away from the
chosen people. Jesus finds a better way. He cures the leper, who immediately re enters the community to spread the good news
about Jesus to everyone who will listen. In this way both Jesus and the leper fulfill their calling to glorify the God who fills us “with

the joy of salvation.”

Lenten Retreat Invitation
Living God’s Word
The Roses of St Elizabeth are hosting their annual Ladies Lenten
Retreat on Saturday, February 21st. Anne Gryz, will be speaking
on The People that Jesus Encountered on His Way to Calgary.
Jesus, you came to bring us into deeper communion with the
Father and one another. Give us the courage to reach out, as
you did, to those in need of our compassion and help. Let
us not be afraid of the opinions of others when we see that
good can be done. Amen.
Registration starts at 8:30 am. Retreat is from 9:00 am to 1:30
pm. The cost is $20.00. Lunch will be hosted and served, by the
Knights of Columbus. Mary's way of the Cross will be at 2:00
pm in the church. Everyone is welcome.
Adult Confirmation Program 2015
Date Change
The St. Elizabeth Adult Confirmation Program is a catechetical
program for all young adults that have already received the
Sacraments of Baptism and First Communion.
They will meet on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 pm
at the Office Conference Room starting February 25th and
ending
May 20th.
In this program they study Faith,
Sacraments, History of the Church,
Morality, the Blessed Virgin Mary
and Devotions.
The Adult Confirmation celebration
will be at the San Jose Cathedral

“DO NOT BE AFRAID!
OPEN WIDE THE DOORS TO CHRIST!”
Dear parishioners and friends,
Season of Lent 2015 will begin this week on
Ash Wednesday. I invite you to take a look at
the special schedule in this bulletin and come participate in one
of the services on Wednesday. The imposition of the ashes on
our foreheads symbolically reminds us of “Repent and believe
in the Gospel.” Of course, there are a lot of areas in our interior
life that we need to examine. One of them is to call to mind
whatever we didn’t do for “one for the least brothers” (Mt
25:40). Pope Francis calls to our attention the problem of indifference. In his 2015 Lenten message, the Pope calls us to reflect
on the theme: “Make your hearts firm” (James 5:8). Here are
two reasons that he points out: (i) “Flooded with news reports
and troubling images of human suffering, we often feel our
complete inability to help”; (ii) “As long as I am relatively
healthy and comfortable, I don’t think about those less well
off.” Today, this “globalization of indifference” is a problem,
which we, as Christians, need to confront. Let us take this Lenten
journey as an opportunity to look after our brothers and sisters.
The answer to indifference is to pray, to help others, and to
recognize the need for God. These three things can be done at
different levels: in the Church as a whole, in parishes, and individually. On the individual level, we should declare our war against
indifference and we will do them in perspective of Praying –
Fasting – Almsgiving.

Peace Be With You! Ever
since the resurrection, this has been My watchword to those
who yearn for Me. As you sit quietly, let My Peace settle over
you and enfold you in My loving Presence. To provide this
radiant Peace for you, I died a criminal’s death. Receive My
Peace abundantly and thankfully. It is a rare treasure, dazzling
in delicate beauty, yet strong enough to withstand all onslaughts. Wear My Peace with regal dignity. It will keep your
heart and mind close to Mine.
Prayer vs. Indifference. “When I was crossing into Gaza, I
was asked at the check post whether I was carrying any weapon. I replied: ‘Oh yes, my prayer books.’” (Blessed Teresa of
Calcutta) Our first action is prayer and our last action is prayer
(of thanksgiving). (i) Next weekend, First Sunday of Lent, seminarians from St. Patrick’s Seminary will come join us at Mass
and share with us their reflection on prayer. (ii) Also beginning
next Sunday, you are invited to write your Mass intention in a
prayer card, place it in the prayer basket which will be offered
to the Altar, the priest will offer Mass for those intentions, and
after Mass you are invited to come take out a prayer intention to
pray for all week.

Fasting vs. Indifference. “Renounce yourself in order to follow Christ; discipline your body; do not pamper yourself, but
love fasting.” (Saint Benedict) We may consider giving up a
few habits and those efforts need to serve the good of other
people. Here are two things we can fast: (i) Stop speaking ill or
negatively of someone as a sign of fasting and instead pray for
that person for any grace that that we think that person needs;
(ii) Having meals more frequently with family members. Let us
fast from having a meal alone and share our mealtime with
loved ones.
Almsgiving vs. Indifference. “Understand this clearly: if you
know how to give, you must know how to pay back.” (St. John
Vianney) Here are two things we can give: (i) Sharing our time,
talent, and/or treasure with the needy (e.g. Support CRS Rice
Bowl); (ii) Visiting someone who is sick at their home or hospital,
encourage that person, and say a prayer together. We are not
doctors, but we can be “comforters” with generous hearts.

Kính thưa Quý Cụ, Quý Ông Bà và Anh Chị Em thân mến,
Mùa Chay năm 2015 sẽ bắt đầu tuần này vào ngày Thứ Tư Lễ Tro. Tôi mời gọi anh chị
em xem qua chương trình phụng vụ trong tờ thông tin này và thu xếp đến tham dự Thánh Lễ
vào ngày Thư Tư. Nghi thức xức tro trên trán nhắc nhở chúng ta “Hãy sám hối và tin vào Tin
Mừng.” Dĩ nhiên, có nhiều khía cạnh trong đời sống nội tâm mà chúng ta cần xét mình. Một
trong số đó chính ta lưu tâm đến những gì chúng đã không làm cho “một trong những anh em
bé nhỏ nhất đây” (Mt 25:40). Đức Thánh Cha Phanxicô đã nhắc nhở chúng ta chú ý đến vấn đề vô cảm. Trong sứ điệp
Mùa Chay năm nay, Ngài kêu gọi chúng ta suy tư với chủ đề: “Anh chị em hãy củng cố tâm hồn” (Gc 5,8). Ngài nêu ra
hai lý do: (i) “Khi bị chìm ngập trong những tin tức và hình ảnh kinh hoàng về đau khổ của con người, chúng ta thường
cảm thấy mình hoàn toàn không có khả năng giúp đỡ”; (ii) “Bao lâu tôi còn tương đối mạnh khoẻ và dễ chịu, thì tôi
chẳng nghĩ đến những người không được khoẻ mạnh.” Cho nên hôm nay “một thứ toàn cầu hoá thói vô cảm” là một
vấn đề mà người Kitô hữu chúng ta cần phải đương đầu. Chúng ta hãy lấy hành trình Mùa Chay này như một cơ hội để
quan tâm đến anh chị em của mình. Đáp số cho thái độ vô cảm chính làm lời cầu nguyện, trợ giúp nhau, và nhận ra là
chúng ta cần Chúa. Ba việc này có thể thực hiện ở các cấp bậc khác nhau: trong Giáo Hội hoàn vũ, trong các giáo xứ,
và nơi mỗi cá nhân. Vậy thì đối với mỗi cá nhân, chúng ta hãy tuyên chiến chống lại thái độ vô cảm dựa theo những
việc làm truyền thống là Cầu Nguyện – Ăn Chay – Bố Thí.
Cầu Nguyện chống lại Vô Cảm. “Khi tôi đang bước vào vùng dải Gaza, lính canh ở một trạm kiểm soát đã hỏi tôi
có mang theo vũ khí nào không, tôi trả lời, ‘Có, đó là những sách nguyện gẫm của tôi.’” (Mẹ Chân Phước Teresa Calcutta) Hãy làm sao mà hành động đầu tiên của mình chính là lời nguyện và hành động cuối cùng cũng là lời nguyện (tạ
ơn). (i) Cuối tuần tới, Chúa Nhật Thứ Nhất Mùa Chay, các chủng sinh Đại Chủng Viện Thánh Patrick sẽ đến tham dự
Thánh Lễ và chia sẻ với chúng ta vài dòng suy tư về việc cầu nguyện. (ii) Cũng bắt đầu Chúa Nhật tuần tới, ban phụng
vụ sẽ giúp anh chị em viết ý lễ trong một tấm giấy, bỏ vào giỏ và giỏ đó sẽ được dâng lên Bàn Thờ, linh mục chủ tế sẽ
dâng Thánh Lễ cho các ý lễ đó, và sau Lễ anh chị em được mời gọi lên lấy một trong các ý lễ mang về cầu nguyện
trong suốt tuần.
Ăn Chay chống lại Vô Cảm. “Hãy từ bỏ chính mình mà đi theo Đức Kitô: sống có kỷ luật với bản thân; không
chú trọng vào mình quá, nhưng hãy năng chay tịnh.” (Thánh Bênêđictô) Chúng ta có thể muốn từ bỏ vài thói quen nào
đó và những nỗ lực đó cần phải mưu ích cho anh chị em khác. Chẳng hạn có hai việc chúng ta có thể “ăn chay”: (i)
Dừng việc nói xấu hay tiêu cực về người nào đó như là một dấu chỉ của ăn chay và thay vào đó là hãy cầu nguyện cho
họ xin những ơn gì mà chúng ta thấy người đó cần; (ii) Hãy năng dùng bữa cơm chung với gia đình. Hình thức từ bỏ
cũng có thể là thay vì ăn một mình thì nay chia sẻ giờ cơm với những người thân yêu.
Bố Thí chống lại Vô Cảm. “Hãy hiểu rõ điều này: nếu bạn biết cách cho đi, là bạn đã biết cách trả lại.” (Thánh
Gioan Vianney) Chẳng hạn có hai việc chúng ta có thể làm bác ái: (i) Chia sẻ thời gian, tài sức, và tiền của với những ai
đang có nhu cầu (thí dụ như chương trình Bát Gạo Tình Thương của cơ quan bác ái CRS hay quỹ xây dựng của giáo
xứ); (ii) Viếng thăm một ai đó đang lâm bệnh tại nhà thương hay ở nhà họ, khích lệ họ, và cầu nguyện chung với họ.
Chúng ta không phải là bác sĩ, nhưng chúng ta có thể là “những người an ủi” mặc lấy tâm hồn thương cảm.

15 de febrero de 2015
Queridos feligreses y amigos:
Todo lo que hagan ustedes,
sea comer,
o beber, o cualquier otra cosa,
háganlo todo para gloria de Dios.
Con el Miércoles de Ceniza empezamos la Cuaresma 2015. Los invito a que vean el horario especial en el boletín y participen en uno de los servicios del miércoles. La imposición de la ceniza
en nuestra frente simbólicamente nos recuerda: “Arrepiéntete y
crée en el Evangelio”. Desde luego, que hay áreas en nuestro interior que debemos examinar. Una de ellas es el llamado que no nos
lo hacemos a “uno de los hermanos más pequenos” (Mt. 25:40). El
Papa Francisco nos hace un llamado al problema de la indiferencia. En su mensaje Cuaresmal 2015, nos dice que reflexionemos en
el tema: “Tengan un corazón firme” (Santiago 5:8). Aquí tenemos dos
razones que él menciona: (i) “Inundados con los noticieros y con
imágenes del sufrimiento humano, nos sentimos a menudo inabilitados
para ayudar”; (ii) “Si me siento saludable y cómodo, no pienso en
aquellos que no tienen”. Hoy en día, la “globalización de la indiferencia” es un problema, que como Cristianos, necesitamos confrontarlo. Hagamos de ésta Cuaresma una jornada de oportunidad
para ayudar a nuestros hermanos y hermanas. La respuesta a la
indiferencia es la oración, ayudar a los demás, y reconocer la
necesidad de Dios. Estas tres cosas podemos hacerlas a diferentes
niveles: en la Iglesia como cuerpo, en las parroquias, e individualmente. En el nivel individual, debemos declarar la guerra contra la
indiferencia y haremos en perspectiva de oración, ayuno y limosna.

Para la Gloria de Dios
La historia completa del pueblo judío va dirigida hacia
una meta: que Dios sea glorificado por medio del pueblo escogido. Los cristianos también están llamados a “hacer todo para
la gloria de Dios”. En las Escrituras de hoy Pablo nos recuerda
que la mejor manera que tenemos para glorificar a Dios es
buscar el beneficio de “todos” tal como Cristo hizo cuando
derramó su sangre por toda la humanidad.
La lectura de Levítico explica una manera en que los
judíos buscaban el beneficio de muchos, manteniendo a los
leprosos y la lepra alejados del pueblo escogido. Jesús encuentra una manera mejor: cura al leproso, que inmediatamente
retorna a la comunidad para difundir la Buena Nueva de Jesús
a todo el que le escuche. De este modo tanto Jesús como el
leproso cumplen con su llamado de glorificar al Dios que nos
llena “con la alegría de la salvación”.

La oración contra la indiferencia – “Cuando cruzaba Gaza, me
preguntaron en la garita si llevaba algún arma. Contesté: ‘ Oh, sí, mi
libro de oración’ ” (Beata Teresa de Calcuta). Nuestra primera acción
es la oración y nuestra última acción es la oración (de acción de
gracias). (i). El fin de semana que viene, es el primer domingo de
Cuaresma, seminaristas del Seminario San Patricio vendrán a
nuestras Misas y compartirán una reflexión sobre la oración. (ii)
También comenzando el próximo domingo se os invitará a
escribir una intención para la misa en una tarjeta, a depositarla en
la cesta de oración que se ofrecerá en el altar, el sacerdote ofrecerá misa por esas intenciones y después de misa se os invitará
a tomar una tarjeta de la cesta y rezar por ella durante toda la
semana.
Tradiciones de Nuestra Fe
Jesús manifiesta su poder mediante el perdón de los pecados
(Marcos 2:1-12). Por medio de la reconciliación con Dios, Jesús
sana a los enfermos, marginalizados y hasta sus propios enemigos. Este poder de perdonar pecados Jesús mismo lo encarga a su
Iglesia, infundiendo su Espíritu sobre los primeros discípulos
(Juan 20:22-23).
Según el Símbolo (Credo) de los Apóstoles, los cristianos
creemos en el “perdón de los pecados”. Esta creencia se relaciona con creer en el Espíritu Santo, la Iglesia, la comunión de
los santos, la resurrección del cuerpo y la vida eterna. En el
perdón de los pecados, el Espíritu Santo manifiesta su continua
presencia y acción en la Iglesia y comunión de los santos.
Quienes reciben el perdón de los pecados mediante la celebración del Bautismo o del sacramento de la Reconciliación, están
preparados para la resurrección y la vida eterna.
El perdón de los pecados manifiesta el poder de Cristo, del
Espíritu Santo y de la Iglesia. Los cristianos estamos llamados
al perdón; perdonando, así como deseamos ser perdonados.
Perdonando, como Jesucristo.
El ayuno contra la indiferencia – “ Renunciad a vosotros mismos
para seguir a Cristo; disciplinad vuestro cuerpo; no os miméis, sino amad
el ayuno” (San Benito). Podemos pensar en dejar algunos hábitos y
esos esfuerzos deben servir la comida a otros. He aquí dos cosas
de las que podemos ayunar: (i) Dejar de hablar mal o negativamente de alguien como señal de ayuno y, en su lugar, orar por
esa persona por cualquier gracia que creas pueda necesitar. (ii)
Comer más frecuentemente con la familia. Ayunemos de comer
solos y compartamos nuestra comida con los seres queridos.
La limosna contra la indiferencia – “Entended bien: si sabéis
cómo dar, debéis saber cómo devolver” (San Juan Vianney). He aquí
dos cosas que podemos dar: (i) Compartir nuestro tiempo, talento
y/o tesoro con los necesitados (por ejemplo apoyando Operación
Plato de Arroz) (ii) Visitar a alguien que está enfermo en casa o
en el hospital, animando a esa persona, y orando juntos. No somos médicos, pero podemos ser “consoladores” con un corazón
generoso.
