China puede elevar sus objetivos solares para 2020 a 150GW

Deutsche Bank analysts say local media reports in China suggest that the
country’s 2020 solar power target could be lifted to 150GW from the current
target of 100GW – meaning more than 20GW of solar would need to be added in

According to the NREL, "air conditioning currently consumes about 15% of the
electricity generated in the United States. It is also a major contributor to peak
electrical demand on hot summer days, which can lead to escalating power
costs, brownouts, and rolling blackouts". The picture is the same in Europe. For
example, according to a national market survey by the Hellenic Ministry of
Commerce, about 95% of air-conditioning sales in Greece occur in the period of
May-August and reach about 200,000 units (primarily small-size split-type heat
pumps) every year. The use of air-conditioning units in summer causes peak
electric loads that periodically result in power shortages in large areas of
metropolitan cities like Athens.

'impuesto al sol'

Un manifiesto firmado por un centenar de entidades sociales y políticas catalanas ha reclamado al Gobierno la
retirada del proyecto de real decreto elaborado por el Ministerio de Industria para regular el autoconsumo de energía
solar con fuentes renovables. Los promotores dicen que el documento pretende “limitar el derecho ciudadano a la
captación, transformación y uso de la energía procedente del sol”.

Investigadores finlandeses desarrollan métodos más exactos para
medir la eficacia luminosa de LEDs

Researchers at Aalto University and VTT Technical Research Center of Finland
have succeeded in developing a method which helps to improve the relative
uncertainty in measuring the luminous efficacy of LEDs from the approximate 5%
of today to one per cent in the future. The results were just published in the
distinguished Light: Science & Applications journal.

In 2005 the Vermont Legislature passed renewable energy legislation establishing the SPEED program. SPEED was
repealed in 2015 with legislation initially called RESET. That name has been dropped because leaders thought it
implied SPEED had been a mistake that required correcting. SPEED was a mistake, and Vermont will be living with
its legacy for at least 20 years.

In August at the National Clean Energy Summit in Nevada, President Obama announced that the Loan Programs
Office (LPO) has issued guidance for potential applicants on the kinds of distributed energy projects it can support, in
the form of supplements to its existing Renewable Energy and Efficient Energy Projects (REEE) and Advanced Fossil
Energy Projects solicitations. In addition, the President announced that the LPO has initiated the process to increase
the loan guarantees available under the REEE and Advanced Fossil Energy Projects Solicitations by up to an
additional $1 billion.

parts of every day. Now researchers have shown that by cutting solar cells into specific designs using kirigami, a
variation of origami which entails cutting in addition to folding, they can allow the cells to track the sun’s angle without
having to tilt the whole panel. This could have a substantial payoff: solar panels with tracking mechanisms can
generate 20 to 40 percent more energy per year than those without trackers

La Universidad de Rice (EE.UU.) inventa técnica para caracterizar
espacios de nanoescala en materiales porosos

Rice University scientists led a project to "see" and measure the space in porous materials, even if that space is too
small or fragile for traditional microscopes. The Rice lab of chemist Christy Landes invented a technique to
characterize such nanoscale spaces, an important advance toward her group's ongoing project to efficiently separate
"proteins of interest" for drug manufacture. It should also benefit the analysis of porous materials of all kinds, like
liquid crystals, hydrogels, polymers and even biological substances like cytosol, the compartmentalized fluids in cells.

current status of clean energy technologies and identifies hundreds of clean energy research opportunities that could
support the effort to modernize the power sector as a whole, while also helping Americans to power their homes,
businesses, cars and trucks more efficiently. The report finds that emerging advanced energy technologies provide a
rich set of options to address the nation’s economic, security, and environmental challenges, but continued
improvements in cost and performance are crucial to the large-scale deployment of these technologies.

The U.S. solar industry is on course for a new growth record in 2015, according
to a new report that finds that solar photovoltaic installations now exceed 20
gigawatts in capacity and could surpass an unprecedented 7 gigawatts this year
alone across all segments. A gigawatt is equivalent to 1 billion watts and can
power some 164,000 homes, according to the Solar Energy Industries
Association (SEIA).

August, 2015 sales increase 8.7% on the previous month as demand increased.
GET noted that demand for higher efficiency wafers had a positive impact on
ASPs, which it said is expected to increase further in the second half of the year.
Sales in August were NT$1,291 million (US$39.4 million), up 8.7% on the
previous month and are following a three-year historical pattern of increased

Realistic solar heating in urban areas: Air exchange and streetcanyon ventilation

Numerical fluid flow and heat transfer simulations of a three-dimensional idealized urban environment are performed
to investigate the effect of realistic non-uniform thermal forcing that is caused by solar insolation and inter-building
shadowing. Simulations at different times of day are performed using Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and mean flow
and turbulence statistics are investigated as determinants for urban canyon ventilation. The differential surface
heating of the building canyon is parameterized using sets of horizontal and vertical Richardson numbers indicating
atmospheric instability and solar tilt with respect to the wind direction, respectively. Roof heating, in combination with
building walls and ground heating, is shown to be important in the strength and location of the canyon vortex. For
example, in case of weak vertical stratification (Riv) and high horizontal temperature gradient opposing the wind
direction above the canyon (Rih), the combination of roof heating and ground heating decreases the strength of the
canyon vortex. The distribution of local convective heat transfer coefficients (CHTC) on building facets are analyzed.
Throughout the day, the windward walls exhibit larger CHTCs and leeward heating enhances CHTC from the roof

Benefits of solar forecasting for energy imbalance markets

Short term electricity trading to balance generation and demand provides an economic opportunity to integrate larger
shares of variable renewable energy sources in the power grid. Recently, many regulatory market environments are
reorganized to allow short term electricity trading. This study seeks to quantify the benefits of solar forecasting for
energy imbalance markets (EIM). State-of-the-art solar forecasts, covering forecast horizons ranging from 24 h to 5
min are proposed and compared against the currently used benchmark models, persistence (P) and smart
persistence (SP). The implemented reforecast of numerical weather prediction time series achieves a skill of 14.5%
over the smart persistence model. Using the proposed forecasts for a forecast horizon of up to 75 min for a single 1
MW power plant reduces required flexibility reserves by 21% and 16.14%, depending on the allowed trading intervals
(5 and 15 min). The probability of an imbalance, caused through wrong market bids from PV solar plants, can be
reduced by 19.65% and 15.12% (for 5 and 15 min trading intervals). All EIM stakeholders benefit from accurate
forecasting. Previous estimates on the benefits of EIMs, based on persistence model are conservative. It is shown
that the design variables regulating the market time lines, the bidding and the binding schedules, drive the benefits of
forecasting.

A risk analysis of a smart home automation system

Enforcing security in Internet of Things environments has been identified as one of the top barriers for realizing the
vision of smart, energy-efficient homes and buildings. In this context, understanding the risks related to the use and
potential misuse of information about homes, partners, and end-users, as well as, forming methods for integrating
security-enhancing measures in the design is not straightforward and thus requires substantial investigation. A risk
analysis applied on a smart home automation system developed in a research project involving leading industrial
actors has been conducted. Out of 32 examined risks, 9 were classified as low and 4 as high, i.e., most of the
identified risks were deemed as moderate. The risks classified as high were either related to the human factor or to
the software components of the system. The results indicate that with the implementation of standard security
features, new, as well as, current risks can be minimized to acceptable levels albeit that the most serious risks, i.e.,
those derived from the human factor, need more careful consideration, as they are inherently complex to handle. A
discussion of the implications of the risk analysis results points to the need for a more general model of security and
privacy included in the design phase of smart homes. With such a model of security and privacy in design in place, it
will contribute to enforcing system security and enhancing user privacy in smart homes, and thus helping to further
realize the potential in such IoT environments.

City attachment and use of urban services: Benefits for smart cities

Increasing uses of urban services enhance urban management efficiency and also favor social, environmental, and
economic sustainability. This research analyzes how users' city attachment levels and other personal determinants
contribute to their uses of urban services. Focusing on the city of Zaragoza (Spain), the empirical study reveals that
personal attitudes and needs, possession of user cards, and education levels have positive influences on the use of
urban services. City attachment affects use indirectly through attitude. This study also presents some innovative
approaches to advance the development of smart cities and suggests implications for managing citizen-oriented
urban services to achieve higher living standards.

The ‘Profession/ Occupation Field Model’as an Activity Theoretical
Framework for the Development of Engineers in the Context of the
Smart City Approach

The planning and control of a job and career development related to trainees and young technicians is indicated by
three features at least: It is complex in the social context, dynamic with regard to the time and contradictory for the
different topics. The proactive diagnosis of occupational developments has to meet these three challenges although
the foresighted consultation and support of technicians are not trivial. The following research question can therefore
be formulated: How can the professional field of technicians be investigated so that an adequate instrument can be
designed for their job and career development?In this contribution the design of a ‚occupation (profession) field
model’ is introduced. The author suggests a system-integrated point of view which has the concept
“occupation/profession field” used both analytically and classifying. Three function modes being connected with each
other are conceived on the basis of an activity theoretical approach. The target audience of these skills for the
balanced assessment and consultation of developments in technical occupation fields embraces at least three
relevant groups of people: (1) Vocational teachers should be able to represent technical work processes embedded
in organizational, social and institutional conditions. Through this they can let future occupational profiles flow into
their didactic long-term objectives. (2) The trainees themselves should be able to adapt their professional ideas to the
complex and dynamic requirements of the globalization. Through these they become neither passive nor naive
professional addressees since they also install contradictions meaning-orientedly in possible future scenarios. (3) The
education/training management opens its perception and gates for junctions to thick institutional and social system
partners to be able to guarantee the education of their trainees in different system contexts. The presented model is
explained at the example of the Smart City approach which helps for the worldwide putting through of an ecologically
and economically acceptable lifestyle in the metropolises of the 21st century.

Spain's energy outlook: A review of PV potential and energy export

Spain must reduce its energy consumption by 23% and achieve 100% renewable energy in electricity generation by
2030. This paper presents the current energy scenario en Spain, and the outlooks for different renewable options,
with special focus on photovoltaic (PV) solar energy. In 2012, Spain was the number two European country in terms
of installed rewnewable energy power. Solar PV technology has the potential to meet Spain's future energy demand
and its associated environmental challenges. This paper gives a review of solar energy economy at global scale for
both PV and thermal power technologies. The Spanish energy scenario shows actual trends and progress made by
solar power. Economic concepts of levelised cost of electricity and grid parity are presented. The financial analysis
shows that PV electricity achieves grid parity at a plant profitability rate up to 7.26%.

Impact of wind uncertainty, plug-in-electric vehicles and demand
response program on transmission network expansion planning

The aim of this paper is to minimize the total cost of the system by incorporating wind power and plug-in-electric
vehicles (PEVs) along with demand response (DR) program. The methodologies have proposed in contrast with the
conventional algorithm in which the transmission line investment cost has been minimized without considering the
dynamism of the deregulated environment. Moreover, the transmission network planning enhances the
competitiveness of the power market, where more market players can participate. In this situation, the network
planner has an important role in assessing the needs for transmission investments. Now-a-days practice of the
network planner is to utilize more renewable power resources, PEVs and implementation of different electricity price
tariffs. To achieve more benefits of PEVs and wind energy, their optimal utilization is a major concern. This paper
proposes a mathematical model for solving the combined effect of PEVs and wind power integration with incentivebased DR program on static transmission network expansion planning (STNEP) problem. To solve this non-linear
and non-convex problem, a nature-inspired optimization algorithm named gbest-guided artificial bee colony algorithm
(GABC) is applied due to its robustness. The algorithm’s performance is evaluated through modified IEEE 24-bus,
Brazilian 46-bus and Colombian 93-bus system. The test results indicate that the combined effect of DR, PEVs and
wind has reduced the total system cost significantly.

Organic Rankine Cycle coupling with a Parabolic Trough Solar
Power Plant for cogeneration and industrial processes

Over the last 25 years solar power plants based on parabolic trough concentrators have been developed for the
commercial power industry. On the other hand, in recent years, a way to harness the solar energy is to cogenerate
through Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) technology coupled to an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) with potential
applications to industrial processes. In this work we present a study of a small CSP plant coupled to an ORC with a
novel configuration since useful energy is directly used to feed the power block and to charge the thermal storage. In
order to analyze this novel configuration we consider a case study with cogeneration applied to textile industrial
process at medium temperature. It turns out that this configuration reduces the size of the thermal storage disposal.
The performance of the solar power plant was simulated with TRNSYS to emulate real operating conditions. We
show the design, study and simulation results, including the production and efficiency curves for our load profile. Our
results show that our system is a promising option for applications to medium temperature processes where electrical
and heat generation is required.

An energy management software for smart buildings with V2G and
BESS

This paper presents the results of a research activity in the framework of electric load management in buildings. The
buildings are supposed to be smart; they are connected to the electric network but they are also equipped with PV
plants for integration of the electric energy request with the relevant storage batteries. The idea behind is to use
batteries of electric vehicles (present in the parking areas of the buildings) as supplementary storage systems. An
algorithm is discussed, based on optimization techniques, that allows maximizing the number of electric appliances
that can be fed in conditions of power limitation. The algorithm is purely numeric, and has been built with the idea to
implement it in a software package that has been produced by the authors. Finally, a case study is presented which
allows evaluating the reliability and the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms and of the software.

Emergence of context-aware technologies and IoT devices reflect that the quality of a human life has become one of
the most essential aspects in Smart Cities. With this goal health monitoring of elderly and disabled people have got
plenty of attention and focus in the research. The healthcare systems rely on the components responsible for context
sensing, processing, storage and inference, and response. In order to make the interoperability among the various
healthcare systems, a typical standard is needed in order to uniformly access the context-aware healthcare
information coming through a fundamental infrastructure. In this paper, we propose people-centric sensing framework
for the healthcare of elderly and disabled people. Such platform is aimed to monitor health of the elderly and disabled
person and provide them with a service oriented emergency response in case of abnormal health condition. We focus
on three aspects: a) context manipulation from the mobile device in people-centric environment; b) emergency
response using context base information; and c) modeling mobile context sources as services. The most distinctive
feature of current work is that medical resources are efficiently used to providing them real-time medical services in
case of emergency simultaneously extending social network of the elderly people. The system implementation shows
that the proposed People-centric sensing system is efficient and cost-effective in health and emergency care.

Hygromorphic materials for sustainable responsive architecture

Contemporary smart building systems typically aim to reduce building energy use by means of technologically
enabled climate-responsiveness; however, these technologies lack the efficiency and elegance of naturally
responsive mechanisms employing the inherent properties of available materials, such as the moisture-induced
opening and closing of conifer cones. This mechanism can be replicated to produce low-tech low-cost hygromorphic
(moisture-sensitive) materials with the response driven by shrinkage and swelling wood. This paper explores the
possibility of adaptive building systems based on incorporation of hygromorphic materials and argues that they
present opportunities for architecture that is passively attuned to the variable natural rhythms of the internal and
external environments, and that addresses a wide range of sustainability considerations.
