The West Vernor Streetscape project will bring all new street lighting to W. Vernor from Clark St. on
the east to Woodmere on the west.
New lighting provides community
safety and permits extended shopping hours. With the identification
of new funding to cover construction
costs, 87% of the total cost of the
work will be covered. The funding
requires that the project contract be
let in 2013. The Southwest Detroit
Business Association is actively
working to secure the last 13%.
“It’s wonderful” said Sara Carlson,
Business Coordinator with the
Congress of Communities. “It will
be brighter for the kids who walk
to the 17 schools along and near W.
Vernor, in the morning for school
and in the evening for meetings and
programs.”
Resident Jesse Gonzales also pointed out that all the new exits at the
state of Michigan’s international
Gateway crossing into Windsor,

COMPÁS Eagerly Reaches Out to
the Community
Starting in May with
the introduction of its new
Director, Aaron Barndollar,
COMPÁS has embarked on
an extensive campaign to
strengthen its relationship
with the community. While
recruiting for summer and
fall classes, COMPÁS also
welcomes community feedback on the Center’s class
offerings. While many of the
classes have built a loyal
and steady following, parents and students are always
eager for new experiences.
Belly dance took off as the
hit of the summer session,
and this fall COMPÁS added
classes in tap dance, percussion, and spoken word
performance. In January,
the roster will expand even

Intermodal Freight
Terminal, and the closeout of the Gateway
Project are all within the
SW Detroit geography,
and moving forward. A
project to expand I-94
between Conner and I-96
is also moving toward
the bidding process. SW
Detroit has some businesses preparing to bid on
these projects. There are
some Detroit businesses
getting their systems in
order to bid on this work.
There are tens(more likely hundreds) of thousands
of Detroiters without
work. Are they ready
to go to work? Has our
employment and training
industry prepared them
for what it means to be
ready? Are we connecting
potential workers with
those who will bid on the
work? Will our business
leadership bid on this
work? Hire unemployed
Detroiters? Do contractors know how to get into
the pipeline, and choose
not to? Will it matter
enough to anyone to make
this happen?

the near eastside communities of Lafayette
Park, Elmwood Park,
East Jefferson and the
Villages, along with the
Detroit Economic Growth
Corporation, SDBA
member and southwest
Detroit café owners Jordi
Carbonell and Melissa
Fernandez opened a
popup café at E. Lafayette
and Orleans.The response
was overwhelming. “The
crowd just kept building
- singles, parents with
young kids, and city diehards. We did our best to
serve good coffee, and the
neighborhood brought in
pastry. It got a little hectic. This next month will
help us figure out if we
can make a go of it,” said
Carbonell.
The couple’s original
location at W. Vernor and
Scotten in the Hubbard
Farms community has
become a major gathering place. Kathy
Wendler, president of
the Southwest Detroit
Business Association,
believes the East
Lafayette location could
be a terrific expansion
opportunity for this local
business. “We’ve got a
number of businesses
that might do well in
other city neighborhoods.
Maybe this will become a
trend!”

time for Latinos to reflect upon
our family members who are
no longer with us,” said Myrna
Segura, SDBA. Our community
is a wonderful place to introduce
people of all ages to the vibrant
and diverse Latino culture, and
we were very excited to host this

Filling
3# pork butt
3 cloves garlic
Salt to taste
1/2 t. black pepper
2 t. cumin
1-1/2 Chile Anchos (pods) —
soaked & deveined

Husks: Soak husks at least 2 hours. Dry husks.
Filling: Bring water to a boil in stock pot. Cook filling over
low heat 3 hours till very tender. Reserve meat juice.
Sauce: Heat some lard in a heavy saucepan. Add chili
mixture and simmer until it thickens. Add shredded meat
and broth. Cook for 25 minutes.
Dough: Mix 1# of lard till light. Add salt, masa & a little
stock & mix till dough is light. The dough is ready when a
small amount floats in a glass of water.
Fill Husks: with 1-1/2t. of dough spread toward edges.
Spread 1t. of stuffing down center. Fold husks overlapping
to center. Fold ends.
Steam Tamales: Boil 3 cups of water in a steamer base.
Place dough in corn husk standing up. Steam for 1-1/2
hours covered with towel, aluminum foil & lid.
Makes 60-80 tamales. Serve hot. For any questions you

The new floor plan is designed to allow doctors, nurses and
other medical care specialists, to better serve the growing number
of patients who trust their care to CHASS Center. The intent of
the new building is also to increase the number of patients cared for
through increased access to the community.
