Therefore, it’s important to be aware of the possible impacts it may have and should make us plan accordingly. Preparing for heavy rains this winter is the best way to keep your family and property safe. For more El Niño preparedness information and to see how City staff is preparing for this potentially severe weather event, visit the City’s website at www.cityofsouthgate.org. Inspect and repair potential leaks in your roof Clear rain gutters and keep other water collection ways clear of leaves and debris Make an emergency plan Update at-home emergency kits Store flashlights and good batteries in easily accessible locations Store bottled water and nonrefrigerated food Plan ahead for prolonged power outages Install new windshield wipers on your vehicles Register for weather and emergency alerts through the City’s website Community Emergency Response Training Coming to South Gate The County of Los Angeles Fire Department’s Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T.) program was developed to provide basic training in safety and life saving skills for the general public. 4 The County of Los Angeles Fire Department is proud to present this training to the public. Following a major disaster, police, fire and medical professionals may not be able to fully meet the demand of the community. People will have to rely on each other to meet the immediate life saving and life sustaining needs, particularly in isolated neighborhoods that may be cut off from the main roads for a period of time. Visit us online at www.cityofsouthgate.org The training course will be presented as a series of three (3) Saturday classes. They will all take place at the City of South Gate - Public Works Yard, located at 4244 Santa Ana Street, South Gate CA 90280. For current class schedule, go to www.southgatepd.org and click on C.E.R.T. C.E.R.T. training is FREE. To enroll please contact Sheri Koomen at (323) 563-5483 or email The Firestone and Rayo Intersection project is complete and all lanes are now open. This project, which commenced in February 2015 and is part of the $80 million Capital Improvement Program (CIP), widened the busy intersection, repaved the asphalt roadway with concrete for better wear, constructed a new sidewalk for pedestrians, replaced street lighting for increased safety and made modifications consistent with the American Disability Act. These improvements will enhance motorist and pedestrian safety and ease traffic flow. For more information on these and other improvement projects, visit the City’s website at www.cityofsouthgate.org, or reach the improvement projects helpline at 323.357.9657 or [email protected]. City news Enhancing Pedestrian Safety and Traffic Mobility Additionally, the Firestone/Atlantic Phase II Project is still in the works and is expected to be completed later this year, which may result in occasional lane closures and detours around this area. Currently, traffic signal poles are being installed along Atlantic as they have been along Firestone. Once the poles are in place, electrical work will commence. This work will occur primarily during the night in order to keep traffic impacts to a minimum. Medians will then be set with drought resistant landscaping and Cobblestone. Tweedy Mile Tree Lighting Ceremony In September 2015, the City Council approved the installation of decorative street tree lights on Tweedy Mile from State Street to Hunt Avenue. Please join the City Council and Tweedy Mile Association for the official unveiling and lighting ceremony on Thursday, November 19, 2015, at 5:00 p.m. The ceremony will take place on Tweedy Blvd., between San Antonio Ave. and San Carlos Ave. There will be live music, free samples, special discounts and a raffle contest. The City is implementing a variety of safety improvement projects and the Safe Routes to School (SR2S) Cycle 8 and 9 are spearheading this effort! In the past thirty years, the percentage of children who walk or bike to school has significantly decreased and the City intends to reverse that trend by funding projects that improve safety and efforts that promote walking and bicycling within a collaborative community framework. accessibility and overall safety for South Gate students and residents. The SR2S Cycle 8 and 9 projects will focus on a number of areas including pedestrian and bikeway safety and accessibility, traffic signal upgrades and street improvements. Although these projects will enhance safety and aesthetics to the City as a whole, a significant amount of attention is being granted to improving traffic and safety on streets neighboring schools and improving pedestrian Construction is expected to begin in late November 2015 and be completed in June 2016. To enhance the opportunities for walking and biking, SR2S Cycle 8 is providing several improvements including creating a bike path and sidewalk along Southern Avenue between State Street and Burke Avenue. Through SR2S Cycle 9, several safety features will be implemented on Alexander Avenue between the south city limit and Southern Avenue by including an exclusive bike lane, new medians, wheelchair ramps, as well as recreational opportunities for students and residents alike! These projects are being funded through a state grant and local return funds totaling over $2,600,000. Stay tuned! Conserving water not only saves you money but it will benefit South Gate as well as California as a whole. Fortunately, water conservation does not require substantial cost. There are a variety of methods you can use to achieve significant water savings. Don’t let all the talk about El Niño lead you to believe the drought will soon be over. As you know, we are in our fourth year of a severe drought. Although El Niño may improve our situation, the expected rainfall will not be enough to get our reservoirs back to normal. In actuality, it would take five years of continuous rain for California to get out of this crisis. And, like in other times of Neighborhood Watch is a Crime Prevention Program that involves a group of residents living in the same area who want to make their neighborhood safer by working in conjunction with law enforcement to reduce crime and improve their quality of life. Building partnerships with your neighbors and members of the Police Department is amongst the strongest features of safer neighborhoods. Residents interested in starting a Neighborhood Watch group should contact the Neighborhood Watch Coordinator. SGPD will provide assistance in getting the program started. Important Crime Prevention Tips To better protect your neighborhood, look and listen for: Someone screaming or shouting for help Someone looking into windows or parked cars Unusual noises Property being taken from houses where no one is at home, or from The following are some helpful tips: ● Check faucets, toilets and pipes for leaks Do not use your toilet as a wastebasket ● Monitor your water meter to check for hidden water leaks ● Take shorter showers ● Do not leave the water running closed businesses Vehicles moving slowly with no apparent destination, or with no lights on Anyone being forced into a vehicle A stranger sitting in a car or stopping to talk to a child Abandoned cars Any unusual activity in businesses, alleys, isolated areas, and notorious problem spots in your neighborhood For more information on starting your own Neighborhood Watch group, please contact Sara Meza-Medrano at (323) 563-5465 or [email protected]. While brushing your teeth or while washing dishes ● Only run the dishwasher and clothes washer with full loads ● Plant drought resistant plants and use mulch around trees ● Only water your lawn on your designated days ● Do not use the hose to clean your driveway or sidewalks City news WATER CONSERVATION IS STILL IMPORTANT We all have to do our part, remember every drop counts!
