Sacrament of the Sick
In the event of serious illness or medical emergency, contact the
Parish office to arrange for Anointing of the Sick and Eucharist. In

Sacrament of Baptism
Infant Baptisms are celebrated on the first and third Sundays of each
month following catechesis for parents and godparents. Parents of
infants should contact the Faith Formation office (949) 496-6011 to
enroll.
Celebration of Christian Funerals
At the time of death, a family member should contact the Parish
office to arrange the date and time for the funeral liturgy.
Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)
Adults requesting information about full initiation and communion
with the Roman Catholic Church (the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation) may contact the Faith Formation office at
(949) 496-6011.
Sacrament of Matrimony
The Sacrament presumes active sacramental participation on the
part of one or both persons. Couples must begin preparation for
their Sacrament at least six months prior to their proposed wedding
date. Please call the Parish office for more information.
Eucharistic Adoration
On the first and third Monday of each month for 24 hours beginning
after 8:15 a.m. Mass. Adoration in San Felipe the 1st Friday of every
month 8 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.

One reality of faith that guides and comforts me is that we are always where God
wants us to be. As Bishop Vann installs me as Pastor of St. Edward the Confessor Parish and San Felipe de Jesus Chapel this Sunday, I am comforted to know that it is Divine Providence who has put us together. Being a Pastor doesn’t come with a how-to
manual any more than being a parent does. I rely on your prayers and the support and
counsel of many people, particularly you, the parishioners.
I am grateful to the parish staff who, though often in the background, are the source of
so much good that happens in this parish. The past two years have been a time of
transition and change. During this time, I have relied greatly upon the wisdom and guidance of the Parish
Pastoral Council and the Finance Council. They have been an invaluable and fruitful expression of collaboration between the clergy and laity. Finally, at the heart of the parish are several hundred parishioners
who share their time and talents serving in a variety of ministries. I am grateful.
I encourage and invite every parishioner - young and old - to recognize and exercise the gifts and charisms that God has given you. God has enriched every member of our parish with unique gifts – great and
small – which, when shared, contribute to the renewal and building up of the Church.
I feel very blessed to lead you and walk with you on our journey of faith.

Una realidad de fe que me guía y me consuela es que siempre estamos donde Dios quiere que estemos.
El obispo Vann me instalara como Párroco de San Eduardo el Confesor y la Capilla de San Felipe de Jesús
este domingo, me consuela saber que es la Divina Providencia quien nos ha reunido. Ser párroco no viene con un manual de instrucciones prácticas, al igual que ser padre, esto tampoco viene con un manual.
Confío en sus oraciones, el apoyo y el consejo de muchas personas, en especial ustedes, los feligreses.
Estoy agradecido con el personal de la parroquia, ellos que están detrás de la parroquia, son la fuente de
tanto bien y de lo que pasa aquí. Los últimos dos años han sido un tiempo de transición y cambio. Durante este tiempo, mi apoyo ha sido el Consejo Pastoral Parroquial y el Consejo de Finanzas, con su sabiduría y orientación he aprendido mucho. Ellos han sido una expresión muy valiosa y fructífera de la colaboración entre el clero y los laicos. Por último, en el corazón de la parroquia hay cientos de feligreses que
comparten su tiempo y talentos al servicio en una variedad de ministerios. Estoy agradecido por esto.
Os animo e invito a cada feligrés - jóvenes y viejos - para reconocer y ejercer los dones y carismas que
Dios les ha dado. Dios ha derramado dones y regalos únicos - grandes y pequeñas a todos los miembros
de nuestra parroquia, cuando estos se comparten, estamos contribuyendo a la renovación y la edificación
de la Iglesia.

The Role of a Pastor
A pastor is obliged to make provision so that the word of God is proclaimed in its entirety to those living
in the parish; for this reason, he is to take care that the lay members of the Christian faithful are instructed in the truths of the faith, especially by giving a homily on Sundays and holy days of obligation and by
offering catechetical instruction. He is to foster works through which the spirit of the gospel is promoted,
even in what pertains to social justice. He is to have particular care for the Catholic education of children
and youth. He is to make every effort, even with the collaboration of the Christian faithful, so that the
message of the gospel comes also to those who have ceased the practice of their religion or do not profess the true faith.
The pastor is to see to it that the Most Holy Eucharist is the center of the parish assembly of the faithful.
He is to work so that the Christian faithful are nourished through the devout celebration of the sacraments and, in a special way, that they frequently approach the sacraments of the Most Holy Eucharist and
penance. He is also to endeavor that they are led to practice prayer even as families and take part consciously and actively in the sacred liturgy which, under the authority of the diocesan bishop, the pastor
must direct in his own parish and is bound to watch over so that no abuses creep in.
In order to fulfill his office diligently, a pastor is to strive to know the faithful entrusted to his care. Therefore he is to visit families, sharing especially in the cares, anxieties, and griefs of the faithful, strengthening
them in the Lord, and prudently correcting them if they are failing in certain areas. With generous love he
is to help the sick, particularly those close to death, by refreshing them solicitously with the sacraments
and commending their souls to God; with particular diligence he is to seek out the poor, the afflicted, the
lonely, those exiled from their country, and similarly those weighed down by special difficulties. He is to
work so that spouses and parents are supported in fulfilling their proper duties and is to foster growth of
Christian life in the family.
A pastor is to recognize and promote the proper part which the lay members of the Christian faithful
have in the mission of the Church, by fostering their associations for the purposes of religion. He is to
cooperate with his own bishop and the presbyterium of the diocese, also working so that the faithful have
concern for parochial communion, consider themselves members of the diocese and of the universal
Church, and participate in and sustain efforts to promote this same communion.

El Rol de un Párroco
El párroco está obligado a procurar que la palabra de Dios se anuncie en su integridad a quienes viven en
la parroquia; cuide por tanto de que los fieles laicos sean adoctrinados en las verdades de la fe, sobre todo
mediante la homilía, que ha de hacerse los domingos y fiestas de precepto, y la formación catequética; ha
de fomentar las iniciativas con las que se promueva el espíritu evangélico, también por lo que se refiere a
la justicia social; debe procurar de manera particular la formación católica de los niños y de los jóvenes y
esforzarse con todos los medios posibles, también con la colaboración de los fieles, para que el mensaje
evangélico llegue igualmente a quienes hayan dejado de practicar o no profesen la verdadera fe.
Esfuércese el párroco para que la santísima Eucaristía sea el centro de la comunidad parroquial de fieles;
trabaje para que los fieles se alimenten con la celebración piadosa de los sacramentos, de modo peculiar
con la recepción frecuente de la santísima Eucaristía y de la penitencia; procure moverles a la oración,
también en el seno de las familias, y a la participación consciente y activa en la sagrada liturgia, que, bajo la
autoridad del Obispo diocesano, debe moderar el párroco en su parroquia, con la obligación de vigilar
para que no se introduzcan abusos.
Para cumplir diligentemente su función pastoral, procure el párroco conocer a los fieles que se le encomiendan; para ello, visitará las familias, participando de modo particular en las preocupaciones, angustias y
dolor de los fieles por el fallecimiento de seres queridos, consolándoles en el Señor y corrigiéndoles prudentemente si se apartan de la buena conducta; ha de ayudar con pródiga caridad a los enfermos, especialmente a los moribundos, fortaleciéndoles solícitamente con la administración de los sacramentos y encomendando su alma a Dios; debe dedicarse con particular diligencia a los pobres, a los afligidos, a quienes
se encuentran solos, a los emigrantes o que sufren especiales dificultades; y ha de poner también los medios para que los cónyuges y padres sean ayudados en el cumplimiento de sus propios deberes y se fomente la vida cristiana en el seno de las familias.
Reconozca y promueva el párroco la función propia que compete a los fieles laicos en la misión de la Iglesia, fomentando sus asociaciones para fines religiosos. Coopere con el Obispo propio y con el presbiterio
diocesano, esforzándose también para que los fieles vivan la comunión parroquial y se sientan a la vez
miembros de la diócesis y de la Iglesia universal, y tomen parte en las iniciativas que miren a fomentar esa

Facilities Update
Our work around the parish continues over the next months.
We have completed the pavement work in the front of the church, filling the space in front of the sculpture of Jesus
and adding truncated domes along the parking lanes. This work totaled approximately $18,000.
The bathroom remodel is underway with completion expected in late July. Once the doors open you will find all
new fixtures and partitions, wall and floor tiles, new partitions new energy efficient LED lighting, and new hand dryers and accessories. We were required to make changes to the positioning of the plumbing fixtures and access
routes to meet the updated ADA accessibility requirements. The total budget for the bathroom work is 130,000.
Other changes this summer include work on the path of travel into the church. We are removing and replacing the
bricks in the arched walkway between the church and school to correct some slope issues that made the pathway
not compliant with current ADA guidelines. At the same time we are adding another row of bricks on either side to
make the planters smaller and more drought friendly. At either end of the walkway truncated domes and pavement
markings are being added to meet current code. We are also adding two van accessible handicap parking spaces on
either side of the walk way. This involve adding a ramp on either side and some pavement work. The approximate
cost of this work is $79,000.

Parish Ministries
Altar Guild Needs Helping Hands
The Altar Guild needs a volunteer to wash and iron
small linens used at weekend Masses. This is a one
Sunday per month, pick up, with several days to clean
and press the small items before returning them to
church.
We also need a volunteer to take home and launder
some of the Altar Server robes used at Mass. This
would be on (or after) the 4th Sunday of the month.
Light laundering is all that is needed. If you can help

Volunteers are also needed to perform light housekeeping duties for the Church, such as washing the
Holy vessels used in the Mass and tidying up the
pews. The time commitment is one hour once a

program lemonade
stand for their generous donation to
Christian Service
Pantry.
Mrs. Kirby's 2nd grade entrepreneurial math class from the
St. Edward the Confessor Parish School Summer Program
learned about proportion, profits, marketing, making
change, and stewardship.
They hosted a lemonade stand and they collectively decided
that their profits would be donated to the parish food pantry
so that others could be served.

FRIENDS OF THE POOR® WALK/RUN
Society of St. Vincent de Paul
Save the date and join us on Saturday, Sept. 26th for
the Friends of the Poor Walk/Run in Huntington
Beach. Funds raised will be applied to a wide range
of assistance for the needy and those living in poverty, including: housing assistance, disaster relief, job
training and placement, food pantries and dining halls,
clothing, transportation and utility costs, care for the
elderly and medicine.
All proceeds directly benefit people in the communities where the money is raised and there are no administrative fees associated with the event.
Walkers are encouraged to make a personal monetary donation and collect pledges from supporters.

Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Myth: Letting in to many immigrants, because
they are often a cheap source of labor, hurts
the wages of workers already in the U.S.
Fact: Immigrant workers generally do not compete
with U.S. workers for unskilled jobs. Some studies
show that immigrant workers may have an impact on
the job status and wages of low-skilled American
workers, such as high school dropouts. Overall, however, immigrant workers fill crucial jobs in important
industries that many American will not do, such as
agriculture. By enacting immigration reform, the wages of immigrant workers will increase because they
will be better able to assert their rights in the workplace and because the pool of unauthorized workers
will dwindle.
