SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 9, 2012
SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 9, 2012 We are now in the Year of Faith which continues through November of 2013. During this year, all Catholics will have an opportunity to reflect on the Year of Faith through prayer, study of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and study of the Second Vatican Council documents. ▪ During October and November, Msgr. Holmes presented four homilies on Dei Verbum, Vatican II’s Constitution on Divine Revelation. Audio and notes for these homilies are posted on our website. In January and February, 2013, Msgr. Holmes will present four homilies on Lumen Gentium, Constitution on the Church. ▪ Nine neighborhood discussion groups are now meeting. Please see our website for complete information. ▪ Copies of the Catechism of the Catholic Church in large-format English edition are available for sale in the parish office for $15.00. Page 3 Second Sunday of Advent December 9, 2012 FROM THE RECTOR Dear Friends in Christ: In the bulletin of October 28, 2012, I wrote to you about the prospect of a complete renovation of the Holy Redeemer School building into student housing, especially to serve those associated with St. Paul’s. As you will probably recall, the reason we are developing this proposal on the “fast track” is that the old roof on that building has failed, and is now beyond repair. That is the reason that the plastic has appeared on that roof. It’s a stop gap measure that is intended to keep water out of the building until we can move forward with long term plans. But with the roof in such precarious condition, we can no longer count on having usable space for Religious Education in that building. We have asked Catholic Charities to vacate the old St. Patrick Convent (just east of the church) by the end of the year, and after the Christmas holidays our Religious Education classes will be held there. Full information on the new schedule there will be forthcoming very shortly. The plan for the renovation of Holy Redeemer School has been developed by Mark Landgraf (Landgraf Construction), working in collaboration with Kothe Real Estate Partners and Insite Consulting Architects (who specialize in the reuse of historic buildings). Last Wednesday evening, this group made a presentation on the project to our parish Finance Council. Scott Berger, who works for the Diocese of Madison as a consultant on building issues, was also in attendance. I think it is fair to say that the proposal was received enthusiastically by the Finance Council. They did recommend that we proceed with it. I also want to give everyone in the parish a chance to be fully informed about this project – something that requires more space than is available in the bulletin. So my intention is to publish a very full description of the rationale for this project and the financial details on the parish website. Given the busyness of this season and our need to move forward with this project quickly, I think that this is the best way to get the maximum amount of information out to all interested parties. The website will also allow us to post good questions that parishioners raise, and the answers. Your response to the information posted on line will be what I use to gauge the support of the parish at large. That will be an important element of the presentation that will soon need to be made to the Diocesan Building Commission. Please look for that complete summary of the project to be posted on the parish website by this coming Thursday. Print copies will be available through the office for those who do not have easy internet access. Msgr.
