It is a 30-mile long atoll, as wide as 9 miles at certain points, and surrounded by a barrier reef. It is Mexico's largest coral atoll, and the second largest in the world. All along the edge of this atoll lie uncounted shipwrecks offering divers a unique experience. Bacalar – Considerado un “Pueblo Mágico”, cuenta con la laguna mas grande de México con una longitud de más de 24 kilómetros y es conocida como la laguna de los siete colores. Hay una gran abundancia de vida salvaje en la selva que la rodea y bellas playas con arena blanca en sus litorales. Es un excelente lugar para la practica de deportes acuáticos, especialmente en el lado sur donde hay varios canales y una pequeña ensenada llamada Río Chaak. Uno de sus principales atractivos es el Fuerte de San Felipe, construido en 1729 para defender la región de los piratas. Durante la Guerra de las Castas, los rebeldes prácticamente lo dejaron en ruinas. El Fuerte fue restaurado y cuenta con bellos jardines, murales y un museo abierto de 8:00 a 13:00 hrs. todos los días. Considered a “Magic Town”, it has the second largest lagoon in Mexico (over 37 miles in length) known as “The Lagoon of the Seven Colors”. There is an abundance of wildlife in the surrounding rainforest and beautiful white sandy beaches fringe the lagoon. The swimming in this fast current creek is great. One of the main attractions is the San Felipe Fort, built in 1729 to defend the region against pirate raids. Cenote del Cocodrilo Dorado – Los visitantes pueden nadar o aventurarse en la selva con algún guía para explorar algunas de las cavernas cercanas. En el ejido se encuentra el Parque Temático Rural “Pueblo Chiclero”, que muestra los usos y costumbres de los antiguos pueblos chicleros, y así conocer el proceso para extraer la resina del árbol del chicozapote. There is also an orchid house and an apiary. Dzibanché – Sitio arqueológico que abarca cerca de 40 kilómetros cuadrados. Cuenta con ruinas de templos, pirámides, palacios y casas. Fue la ciudad más grande fundada por los Mayas en la región. Measuring almost 40 square kilometers, and dotted with temples, pyramids, palaces, sacbes (Mayan paths), offertories and house mounds, this is the largest city found to date in southern Quintana Roo. Kinichná – Conformada por pequeños edificios situados alrededor de la impresionante acrópolis que es la estructura más grande de la zona arqueológica. It is formed by small constructions surrounding the impressive Acrópolis, the largest structure in the zone.It was inhabited between 200 - 600 AD. Kohunlich – Habitada del año 250 al 900 DC. Se destacan: el Templo de las Mascaras, la Acrópolis, el Juego de Pelota y una serie de edificios residenciales. It was inhabited from 200 to 1000 AD. Among the most important buildings are: the Temple of the Masks, the Acropolis, the Ball Game, and a series of residential buildings. Oxtankah – Se cree que fue el lugar en donde primero se dió el mestizaje. Aquí los españoles construyeron un pueblo que llamaron Villa Real. Actualmente, hay vestigios de templos prehispánicos y de glesias coloniales. This Mayan city is thought to be where the mingling of European and native races first occurred. Later the Spanish conquerors built the town they called Villa Real. Today vestiges of both prehispanic temples and a colonial church are still visible. PESCA - Las excursiones de pesca deportiva pueden arreglarse desde Majahual y Xcalak. En los meses de verano (temporada alta) puede pescarse dorado, pez vela y marlin. En el resto del año es fácil encontrar guachinango, macarela, barracuda y atún. En Chinchorro, se pesca langosta a mano cosechada por los locales. DEPORTES ACUATICOS,- Natación - Se puede practicar en el Río Hondo, El Palmar y la Laguna de Bacalar. Otros: windsurfing, canotaje, esquí, remo y veleo se pueden practicar en la Laguna de Bacalar. BUCEO - La profundidad, densidad de coral y bellas formaciones son algunas de las características del arrecife coralino que se corre por más de 100 Km. por toda la costa del Sur de Quinta Roo. La visibilidad se extiende hasta 70 metros en algunas áreas. Adicionalmente, cuenta con más de 200 restos de naufragios en los arrecifes de Chinchorro. Dentro de los lugares más recomendables se encuentran: Copper Clad, Cuarenta Cañones y Far Star o Fire Star. En la región también se puede bucear en canales subterráneos y cavernas que desembocan en lagunas y en el Mar Caribe, es una experiencia única pero se necesita experiencia. Un excelente y original lugar para bucear es el Cenote Azul. ESNORQUELEO - Se puede esnorquelear a lo largo de la costa y en los alrededores de Chinchorro. KAYAKING - El Rió Hondo es uno de los mejores lugares con todos sus canales rodeados de manglares. OBSERVACION DE AVES - Hay casi el mismo número de especies de aves en la región que las que se pueden encontrar en toda Europa. Las lagunas a lo largo de la Costa Maya, Sian Ka’an y el área de la Bahía de Chetumal a Bacalar, son algunos de los mejores lugares para la observación de aves. TORTUGAS – Durante las noches de abril a septiembre se pueden observar desovar tortugas en Majahual. FISHING - For those in search of a duel with a magnificent marlin, sailfish or dorado, sportsfishing excursions can be arranged from Majahual and Xcalak. During the off-season, spearfishing yields a catch of nassau grouper, black grouper, black jewfish, yellowfin groper, and snapper. South of Punta Allen is considered one of the best salt, fly-fishing grounds in the world. In Chinchorro, fishing is mainly for spiny lobster and conch, harvested by diver fishermen. WATER SPORTS - Swimming - Along the Hondo River at El Palmar there is a good place to swim as well as the shoreline of the Bacalar Lagoon. Other - windsurfing, canoeing, waterskiing, rowing, and sailing can be enjoyed along the shoreline of Bacalar Lagoon. DIVING,- Its depth, high level of development, coral density, and the extraordinary beauty of its formations characterize the barrier reef along the coastline. The region's barrier reefs are approximately 155 miles long. The visibility is excellent up to 210 feet in some areas. More than 200 vessels have run aground on the reefs of the Chinchorro coral atoll and expert divers can find their remains. Some of the recommended places are Copper Clad Wreck, Cuarenta Cañones, and Fire Star Wreck. Diving in clear fresh water, into the underground tunnels and cavities that empty into the lagoons and the Caribbean, is a unique experience but you have to be a qualified cave diver. An excellent place to dive is the Cenote Azul. SNORKELING - Snorkeling is possible along the coastline, and near Chinchorro. KAYAKING - Fans can navigate the Hondo River and the canals twisting between the mangroves at Estero Franco. TURTLE WATCHING – From April to September the shoreline of Majahual become a nest area for sea turtles. BIRD WATCHING - There are almost as many species as in all of Europe. The lagoons along the Costa Maya, in the Sian Ka'an, and in the Bacalar-Chetumal Bay area are good birding areas.
