11th Annual Firefighters
Toy Parade
On Saturday, December 5, we will be bringing our
11th Annual Toy Parade through your neighborhood.
For those of you not familiar with this terrific event,
your Chicago firefighters and paramedics have been
busy collecting new toys, bikes, wagons, electronics
and cosmetics. All of our gifts are paraded up Union
Avenue to 26th Street over to Halsted and then on to
Catholic Charities where they are greatly received and
distributed to Chicagoland’s neediest children.
Our Toy Parade is a colorful collection of private antique and city fire engines, private vehicles decorated
and loaded with toys, bikes and gifts.
We would like to invite you to come out and enjoy
the parade & cheer on your firefighters & paramedics.
If you would like to donate a new toy or gift, have it
with you curb side & a firefighter will take it & add it
to our collection. We will be moving down Union Avenue from 10:00am to about 10:30am. We are looking
forward to your support.

Barbara Czerniak, a native of Bridgeport and a longtime parishioner of St. Barbara
Parish, was presented with the Christifideles Award by His Eminence, Francis Cardinal George, Archbishop of Chicago. This presentation took place at the Conferral
of Ecclesial Honors Liturgy at Holy Name Cathedral on Sunday, November 8, 2009.
Pictured with Barbara Czerniak is Bishop Gustavo-Siller, Episcopal Vicar for
Vicariate V, and her family.
The Christifideles Award is bestowed upon a layperson or couple who demonstrate faithfulness and dedication in serving their Church as they serve their parish.
She is a member of the Parish Council, Liturgy Committee, Counting Team, Catholic
Appeal Committee and Coordinator of the Eucharistic Ministers. Barbara attended
both St. Barbara Elementary School and High School.

teammates, these young women proved that having talent, heart and a strong work ethic will help you achieve
your goals and enjoy a high level of success.”

women on their achievements and wishes them every
future success.
Bridgeport Catholic Academy
Highlights
Mrs. Maureen Colin, Associate Director of the Holy
Childhood Association, spent the day with the students
of Bridgeport Catholic Academy discussing the role of
mission and missionaries in our world. The students understood her message of “Children helping Children”
through prayer, education and financial support. The
students collected $500 to support the missions through
a Bake Sale and Raffle. Our staff and students wish the
community a Blessed Thanksgiving.
Mrs. Colin talks about the missions as students Tom
Woodman & Payton Botica listen attentively.

The students took a tour of the entire fire house from the kitchen to the exercise
rooms. The fire fighters gave demonstrations of how the fire equipment works and
is used in the event of a fire. Other fire fighters told the students about the fire trucks
and ambulance. The best part was watching a fire fighter go down the fire pole!

Tilden CCA Students to Serve
Meal in the White House
Tilden Career Community Academy students were
awarded First Place in a
Culinary Arts School Lunch
Awards competition and the
winners will be flown to
Washington D.C. to serve
congressmen. On October
29th, six junior students
competed in a “Cooking up
Change” contest, hosted by
the Healthy Schools Campaign.
Their special dish was
“Chicken Jambalaya with
Jalapeno Cheddar Cornbread and Cucumber Salad.”
The meal was so delicious that it was selected by the
judges above all other entries and is scheduled to be
served over the entire nation in public school cafeterias
in the Spring of 2010.
The winning Tilden team members are Elyssa Ford,
Jakaia Franklin, Lasonda Livington, Aljibri Reed, Cari
Smith and Henry Walton, each of who will also receive
a $1,000 scholarship toward registration at the Washburne Culinary Institute. The team will be flown to
Washington to meet with White House Chef Sam Kass.
They will work together with White House staff to prepare the dish which will be served in the House of Representatives cafeteria.
“Our kids had just six weeks to meet the specified
nutritional requirements of the project while selecting
from an ingredient list & spending about one dollar per
meal. These are great kids and they will become great
adult chefs one day” said Tilden Chef Keith Morris.

Seasonal and H1N1 Flu Shots
at St. Rita of Cascia H.S.
During the month of October, St. Rita of Cascia High
School in conjunction with nurses from Shotfairy.com
administered the Seasonal Flu Shot and the H1N1 Flu
Shot to several hundred individuals. The Seasonal Flu
Shot was offered in the beginning of October to St. Rita
faculty and staff. It was then offered again during the
October 9th Football game to the students and general
public. Then, on October 28th, the H1N1 Flu Shot was
offered to faculty, students and staff, and families of St.
Rita.
These opportunities resulted from the current concern and demand for vaccination during this flu season,
especially vaccination for the H1N1 flu. Peggy McKeever, mother of St. Rita freshman James, first approached St. Rita President Fr. Tom McCarthy, O.S.A.
’83 with the idea to hold these special offerings, and
later with the assistance of St. Rita faculty member,
Mrs. Jodi McLawhorn, St. Rita was able to organize the
vaccination events.
Mrs. McKeever helped begin the Shotfairy organization which administered the shots. She had an idea to
give shots in the middle of the night to her children, so
as to eliminate the crying and trauma that often accompanies small children with their shot taking experiences.
The doctor she works for, Dr. Scott Hanlon, was not
sure it would work. Thus, in order to test the theory,
they administered vaccine shots to their own children
while sleeping, and the children never woke up or even
knew they received a shot. No crying and no trauma.
Hence, the idea came for “Shotfairy.” Now Shotfairy.com provides a multitude of services - from coming into the home to administer vaccines to reaching out
to local schools to provide vaccine opportunities.
These opportunities were extremely successful and
in the end St. Rita was able to assist in providing over
400 people with vaccinations for the seasonal and
H1N1 flu.

Affordable Computers for
Christmas
Benton House, in partnership with Youth Technology Corps (YTC), will be offering refurbished Pentium
4 computers on Black Friday, November 27th from
noon until 5pm. For your donation starting at as little
as $100 towards the YTC job training program at Benton House, you will receive a premium computer and
help youth become connected with 21st century technology while gaining relevant life and job skills. These
computers come with a great warranty as well. YTC and
Benton House will stand behind these computers.
Our students are talented and accomplished - they
have installed computer labs in several Chicago schools
and non-profits, as well as Durango, Mexico, and disadvantaged areas of North Carolina.
Registration for classes will also begin on November
27th as well. For $50 students will learn to build their
own computer and will bring it home in time for the
holiday season. You will also learn about classes and
seminars in a variety of different areas that include,
using Open Source Software, A+ programming, Internet for Beginners, and more.
Benton House is located at 3052 S. Gratten in
Chicago. For more information call 773-927-6420. We
have already moved hundreds of computers this season
so don't miss out!
Computer specifications are within these ranges
:256-mb to 1 gig Ram; 20-80 gig hard drives; 17inch +
CRT monitors; Operating Windows XP Professional;
Open Office software package (a Microsoft Officecompatible office suite); CD-Rom (some DVD and CDR drives available); DSL/Broadband ready; standard
mouse and keyboard included. Most of the computers
are Dell Optiplex’s.
Many families in the community do not have the resources available to purchase a computer for themselves. We are offering a sponsorship program to
address these needs. If you would like to provide a refurbished computer to a local family, call Benton House
at 773-927-6420 for donation information.
St. Andrew Speaks Their Way
to First Place
St. Andrew’s Bruins spoke and recited their way to a
well-deserved first place trophy last Saturday. After a
month and a half of preparation, select 5th-8th grade
students entertained parents and judges as they recited
patriotic poems, famous speeches, and short stories like
“Skippyjon Jones.” The last two years the Bruins came
in 2nd place at the CALL Forensics Competition hosted
by Illinois Lutheran High School in Crete, IL. Parents,
students, and teachers alike are proud of the students’
accomplishments. “This means more than a sports trophy,” explained one proud parent. “We’ve got the academic talent.” This annual competition gives students
the opportunity to hone their public speaking skills.
This positive experience helps students gain confidence
for future public speaking opportunities. Congratulations to the following participants: Declamation:5-6
Tiffany Blacklidge; 7-8 Alexandra Canning; Humorous Interpretation: 5-6 Justin Rocha; 7-8 Noah Alonzo;
Play Acting: 5-6 James Mailloux, Emma Chesniak,
Jennifer Pindelski, David Vega; 7-8 Matthew Bookstein, Robert Vega, Robyn Kowaluk, Julian Saldana;
Storytelling: 5-6 Daniel Valdes; Prose & Poetry:5-6

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN
(Never Known to fail.) (1X) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine,
splendor of Heaven. Blessed Mother of
the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist
me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea,
Help me & show me that you are my
Mother. Queen of Heaven & Earth, I
humbly beseech you from the bottom of
my heart to succor me in this necessity.
There are none that can withstand your
power. Oh show me herein you are my
mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin,
pray for us who have recourse to thee (3
times). Holy Mother, I place this cause in
your hands. (3 times). Holy Spirit, you who
solve all problems, light all roads so that I
can attain my goal, you who gave me the
divine gift to forgive and forget all evil
against me and that in all instances in my
life you are with me, I want in this short
prayer to thank you for all things as you
confirm once again that I never want to
separated from you in eternal glory. Thank
you for your mercy toward me and mine.

On a recent field trip to

Forest.
Pictured with Commissioner Daley & Alderman Balcer (Pre-K thru Grade 2): Wendy Wang, Francesca
Giacone, Joshua Rowe, Annie Tan, Grace Messing,
Matthew Cuzco, Johnny Tan, Joseph Leonard,
Luis Castaneda, Fannie Liang, Joshua Herrera,

Pictured with Commissioner Daley and Alderman
Balcer (Grade 3 thru Grade 5); Emma Bunda, Rita
Grassano, Casandra Gallegos, Tyler Cichy, Victoria Gonzalez, Zachary Pasciak, Eryn Baker,

“There are letters everywhere” exclaimed one of
the students.
While playing in the
story forest, students
searched for letters in a
stream, in the trees, and
shrubs. They even fished
for letters while rowing
along in a canoe. One
student was excited to
find the letter R amongst
some feathers. He said,
“Teacher I have this letter
in my name!”
Allow your child to
experience the joy and
excitement of learning
today. Armour pre-school
