Subterranean Deliriums Pasolini’s Murder Ballad 3: Verano/Summer 2013 Cover by Victor Gutiérrez Pancorbo Portada de Victor Gutiérrez Pancorbo http://www.victorgutierrezpancorbo.blogspot.com The third issue of Subterranean Deliriums was put together thinking about Pier Paolo Pasolini, the filmmaker, writer and artist, who was murdered in Italy. We were particularly interested in his murder in Ostia, and the issue is intended to give agency to the murdered poet, rather than simply pay tribute to the work of a great artist and maker. By that we mean that almost all of the pieces in this edition are either circumscribed, floating, or suspended within the orbit of Pasolini’s opus, which acts metaphorically as a kind of radius that traces a line into forming a circle. In a way, Pasolini’s murder is working as a metaphor for our own murders as citizens in the present time, in a world that is fully multiplous, and that fosters the perpetuation of a system where things don’t ever really change, and yet the concept of “change” is constantly hearkened, a world that refuses to let us question our space and time to find the corners of our existences. We all are (or can be) Pasolini, and, let’s hope, not only the Pasolini of Salo and Ostia, but also the bard of 1001 Nights. Perhaps age was the problem, one who craves to grasp youth like the modern Dorian Gray often meets death. We would have cried, the two of us together for each and every woe in this world. And, later perhaps, in an embrace, we would watch the trees, desiring to be sap, love, trunk, and branches. O Pasolini! The error was not you, the sentence, how it tears beauty off the heart. O Pasolini! Hesitant you march, in isolation, to Mass, in this uncertain city. At the cross a bodkin, the wound of the alley, open. ¡Ah Pasolini! To P.P. Pasolini Here there is a dung beetle poetics, out of control. Here there is a poetics of sun and rain and sun. There is a universe with its mnemonic rules and there are organisms as minute as we are. And blood beats against my temples like sea surf and there is a swinging of life in me which could be rendered into films, but this time it is me, too much me, the main character. And I hear the world panting like a wounded poet mute ink boiling in the inkpot. I hear the agony of my whole universe. It has been them. And this thing that living or dead I don’t know how to say but to myself and to those winged companions who buzz honoring my corpse. The sea of time freezes in its irresistible swell, I understand: I am a sailor. 8| SUBTERRANEAN DELIRIUMS CANCIÓN SONG I did not want to go on swallowing this civilized brat: some people phagocytize themselves like a neurotoxin. I had to scrub myself with 2 Huggies paper towels moisturized with Aloe Vera and a little whiff of Vitamin E, (neither twilight nor brightness, but just after the interval of a mute and blind synapse) in search of the unfulfilled password of toys… - To sketch a circumference in the air and you are almost sixteen again, or something. WHAT A SPRAIN IMPLIES The crossing of nylon threads and the different trajectories of a series of plots of land fit for building are shaking in a collision where both the shoe and a fracture devoid of gaudy colors chatter: bandages and plaster… Being in that very same moment residual materials, marginalized and cast off, which are reused, assembled, recycled or jury-rigged, they had already begun to write obscenities to both immature ankles… Left and right of snot, I shaved the pudding with cream at which a pair of Hofstrand crutches were starting to salivate… But the gravitational action of dizziness was pushing me to anew course to the quasi-uterine pillow… To avoid visualizing in 4-D the narrow air at the throat a cleaner slash of the umbilical cord was required… 10| SUBTERRANEAN DELIRIUMS WOLFMAN LIBRARIAN ASTRODENTIST AT WALL STREET STATION Mouth of the longest Days Nowmouth Gemini Mouth Mouth Mouths Twin Mouths Triplet Mouths Tripping balls to speak it How linear time is an arrow Missing the mark every time Holderlinear time An arrow hitting me in the Bullseye tip of The tongue so I can speak of thinning hair full hair hairless hair on the New York Subway I am the Heir of Wall Street Emptiness It isn’t Zen it is what what isn’t you cannot get to it with Violence pull down thy manatee from The Sun pull down thy manatee ego sick poisoned with the tuna in The bay of Azure like The Azores Pass your life will pass I say pull down Thy manatee from the net it is not yours or Thine or anybody’s, Copper, Lexicographer of Law, We are here to be lawless and Thaw the ice block from our heads The foreclosed on icehouse still melts around my head My head is its only inhabitant I want out of this poetry/poesía|11 there is no out to go to but in in in in in in in Pull down thy manatee ego Heaving in the net above you Copper you are not Hephaestos you are dragging your net to get us But we are not fish but The ocean! 44| SUBTERRANEAN DELIRIUMS PPP I Concrete, leave your footprints on mud and tar of cancelled constructions. One who in Rome did not love the funeral never sees. Slowly it goes, by closed film theaters behind the front walls, golden or blue mosaics, palms, paper swarm, outdated, announcing past dramas, meetings, premières, maybe used books carry your name, a forgotten ID of a library marking that rebellious daughter of some bourgeois engineer; it tells of when she was reading near the dawn, sex at Termini and empty street lights, your lines the only lamp cracked solace when entering back into the Villa Pamphili palazzo where parents are resting from a long soirée: Chianti, piano and violin, counts, stern silks and piss in Murano glasses; noble-browed pigs are watching RAI afraid poetry/poesía|47 that the dreamt Reds arise from their catacombs and lord with art or with thirst of capital’s marrow; dark suits full of banks’ salt and of dry undigested meat; usure in the very same heel that dances at the Saxon embassies or plays stock markets. Usury will never paint anything under Pier’s name or anything which sinks colour like a sharp line into the belly; one who in Rome loved you has come to dinner today. Embroidered linen, silver and shrouds and more red velvet that at any brothel; young girls under white lace aprons, marking the shades and profiling the sexes like unmade paltridge or hare when hung from a slingbag. Paolo, the dinners now owned by empty ledgers have turned the menu into law, one cannot drink anymore on stride, as your art of wolves or deer was wont to. One has to stand, cruel the cold in hallways and streets, as they keep teaching their new rules for the art of loving: It won’t be enough to pay a piece of body or of feigned burning as the banker’s fee, swell of the plusvaly, and giving the gut to the metal of interest-free levies is not filling for those who out of sheer vice amputate the wings of both act and actor and split in half the flesh of real assets sniffing the latest revenues. Let no one dare say that you could not sing in times of yore with disgusts the very same cravings of the cavalieri; one who in Rome did not love has pawned his eye once more: 48| SUBTERRANEAN DELIRIUMS sockets and niches will go on to seek borrowed miseries, Lucia with azure orbs, Agueda in profile already everything in lascivious platters, afternoon snack at Piazza del Popolo; at lustral hour for the sun it gulps in coffee the alms. Shades of Aegyptus will erringly lead you to last bridge; as a postcard sight freezes inside a fish-eye the absurd vistas in ravens’ flight and pigeon’s clothing perched on blind brow, mixing the coming and going of blond-haired tourists who shake their buttocks to the piping of guides with nightly steam of those who go out to pay for brief intercourses, clothes on, next to the orange-hued wall, either in tender or cash quavering against the handles of worn motor-bikes whilst the voice of tour agents does not relent ten to six and under a turbid lantern the groins of frustrated workmen dream of the flower of Borgia, lust without capital, incest without any gaud of the evil of joint blood which the popes guard in eagerness: under the stone, Pier, upon the stone the swarm of uniformed priests who fill the arena like armies, and out of the bus palmless pilgrims, the clean color of flags which here on their knees consummate act of love ancient, rosary and soft groan; the bowel disorders of their concubines taken as a way to pray while nuns ichor yield to the withered Pontifex ‘midst floodlights deep into Caina. One who in Rome loved you the body can’t keep poetry/poesía|49 nor clear nor whole inside the City of God or of Men. Maybe a barren yard, empty bedroom, warehouse where to in twain break the loins while looking through windows in which your funeral reflects the water and grey, the last beat of those who forgot or who never read Tamara Browne, Madrid Spain 2013 photo of apartment building / fotografía de apartamentos of one who in Rome did not love, of one who love could not. 50| SUBTERRANEAN DELIRIUMS III Naked wolves, you that at night prowl from gallows to gallows, the measure smelling of standing bodies, where you don’t dwell, to get you a name among those who are people of verbs, of action and blood, see here the shirt of one who would write, lain down to sleep, the way that he used to lie with the beasts, sniffing the sin which embraces us all in the company of sorrowful goddess and of her beloved. And when thoughtlessly you say you love if you want to cover your skin with the lesson of echoes or rites, through the mouth you go into pauper’s broth of passion and dust; and from his own corner he wistfully looks while the very dream is turned into strife, away from the tree and close to the path buried in streets were purchase was made of the white shroud that no one would give to sorrowful goddess or to her beloved. What you did spend now you cannot count nor in metal nor in hours which burn with the wilted taste of blood that you crave, as in the remembrance of season or time laden thick with devotion and pangs; you surrender your weapons and your jewelry at the seven gates of the dairy house where to get laid you have dearly paid the bull that you were when the sun would wound the sorrowful goddess and her beloved. Man of letters, nobody would say that you might get out after the three days as beer or new wine could: far from all light your throat now chills that sorrowful goddess and her own beloved. poetry/poesía|51 IV Fourth parts tend to be about Phoenicians who sail; therefore it’s appropriate to think of you while looking for some coast to the east of the Thyrrene or beyond, edging Yemen and its towers on the way to India. Don’t go West, that’s where the sun dies among bodies lost to your iris, crafted by radiation, gym, and make-up. Drowsy cicadas sing in the villages of stone and lime, of grime of the times of Boccaccio or of the war while you walk alone amidst the cherished crowd which goes silent. And as Phoenicans did, you put them all helter-skelter in an absurd vessel, the strange collection we have left of you, in cans, loose sheets blue and gray, where to lose pigment powders of Umbria, Marxist philosophers, rural accents of Friuli or Calabria, Medea’s voice, long strokes in melodious Arabic and the noon-time empty glistening of light pouring over kohl or sweat of tan workmen as the bird passes by and you don’t dare to speak, their sorrows and their charms outweight your desire and you affix it to the pulp of the book they are dictating. Pier Paolo Pasolini, still from/fotograma de Medea 52| SUBTERRANEAN DELIRIUMS I don’t know if Phoenicians loved well or bad, but they sowed in sheets and metals writing whilst they sold or robbed, for that’s how the world has to be, always mixing the purest moment with infamy; your eye looked at the sea taxless and at the earth undivorced from clean air, which remains clear though blemished by factories and train, the sediments of civilization’s intercourse with its bastards; we have read and seen all, digged around your tomb and something’s missing: one can’t learn to be more you than me without your person. Fourth parts tend to be about drowned Phoenicians, an illustrious tradition among poets, to fill one’s lungs at last forever with some meaning and truth; you went beyond, not needing the water of poor writers, as you flowed alone in loving throats and skins. We others cannot help to carry on being Phoenicians without tide, our shipwreck passed by and left us at the shore; today, Sunday, I hope to see your footsteps for some hours, as an impossible wake inside this village, far from the sea and river-orphaned; if from the ground you hear tell me where and whither I should walk to find them: poetry/poesía|53 V The empty beer factory shines under the sun, February here and the old bridge beckons still to the lazy walks of a wasting weekend; i’ve never been so far down South and this mix of buildings in the street surprises me. After the square people are melting, old houses amaze ‘midst the red brick and the markets speaking of far lands; rain does not bother as astray churches rise, already-defunct water towers exhibiting almost proper graffitti that talks of rhymeless desire, forsaken by youths without letters or grim-lipped without papers. Right before the rainshower, two girls holding hands were walking to some unknown dive or maybe just to be together without ritual; their footsteps already lost to shade, they have left sharp laughter as a pin interrogating my own bourgeois attire. I still ignore how you managed to do it, to touch and to know them, without lore and readings being ballast in this love of the scene displayed before the eye and behind the din of the senses, to manage to see them as they see themselves, and to believe in instants 54| SUBTERRANEAN DELIRIUMS that you can desire without the wounds caused by the craving pangs calling you in a face and in the sight that always ends up broken. Only at the bars the noise endures when it’s dark; under the marquées they smoke alone but the street welcomes them. And it is strange, to ask for a light or bump a smoke is the only moment when closeness can be half-seen; the oral law of sharing death in packages perhaps is that chance or wink to see that me is not me, but something more, even with forced gestures. The urban mass now opens to the freeway and the human core becomes gas stations and those clubs, neons, uncanny hours which merge labor with vice before dawn breaks, cab drivers, whores, and truckers pass their footsteps signal that loving is more difficult than letters, that something creaks and splits this discourse so scattered in itself from its prime reason. To aspire to love as per a formula is so ridiculous here, to encircle that shade that you will then desire with candles and with books; the bells so artificial of a cellular make me stop; around, industrial sprawls whose geography I ignore. Pier Paolo Pasolini, stills from/fotogramas de Accattone, Mamma Roma, Uccellacci Amidst the warehouses and blind blocks there are some open yards and I must think of you when looking, in case I still had left poetry/poesía|55 in this night-walk of imposture the final, genuine option of striding as you strode in consummating art into prophecy, without the vain props of suicide, which is just the destruction of the self, like raping destroys sex or capital of ours, now and ever, daily bores into the minds and bodies. And you knew all too well, and thus preferred to glimpse a last rite of passion which leads to accidental demise, but so full of meaning, not liturgy, but rather sacrifice or testimony of everything you love and wounds you. I try to see myself on every dirty field and when the few lonely ones walk close to me (or those whispering groups) I go into imagining who’ll take me into the dirt with no reason, just wrath, perhaps some greed at my crust’s price. And the world is quite strange, nobody seems to notice me; mesh fence against my face, the animal smell of plastic leather bereaving me of consciousness; I hope that there is blood, where everything begins and ends. I whistle in full force the folia and still they pay no heed, I even ask the time but nobody challenges or mugs me. And so it doesn’t work 56| SUBTERRANEAN DELIRIUMS to seek ultimate union in violence, to aspire to casual hatred is as pretentious as creating love from the mere nothing. I walked down to the south for the whole night and I’m still as far from you, from me, from all who where and all who will be, those who could grant life or death, bestowing some sense upon the swarming; it’s time to go back now, I have a house, there are books left to read and pages where to forget myself and then remember you; if nothing of it quenches the nightly wound where I sojourn, the why is clear: I went after your steps and lost the way; death and life just go on, I am not worthy, we are not. opposite page/página siguente, Pier Paolo Pasolini, stills from/fotogramas de Decameron, Porcile poetry/poesía|57 58| SUBTERRANEAN DELIRIUMS 1. P: No es que intente. No es que pruebe - The prisoner looks at her. T: ¿Qué? P: The tongue. When you first attempt to talk again, The tongue Is heavy, slow, undisciplined, Or it goes off on it’s own way Nearly innocent, Like a child on a bicycle Leaving the pavement and swerving Onto freshly cut grass Or a field of blue weeds. The saliva hits his upper lip, Splashing on his face, And then begins to drip into his mouth. He remains quiet. She mixes a few pills in with the saliva. T: Swallow. He swallows. T: You’re exactly like the rest of them. Always the same concerns, The same weak reactions, Except maybe even more inconsequential, One of the last ones, Entirely alone, Still, whether consciously or not, opposed To the larger whole, The minute details… The drugs have now begun to take affect. The prisoner, still on the ground, Becomes weaker and confused. She holds a small medallion playing with the light it reflects along his face. He looks up. T: ¿Quieres? ¿Quieres ser parte de nuestro mundo nuevo? Uno del grupo... T: Do you want to? Do you want to be part of our new world? One of the group… Ella sonríe. She smiles. T: Well, that’s my job— To make sure that you do. 60| SUBTERRANEAN DELIRIUMS 3. T: So who are you going to become? He follows her around the room, In circles Or zig-zags Or whichever way she chooses. Watching the backs of her legs, The heels of her shoes As her feet move up and down, The movement of the lower half of her body Becoming his focus, Reading it anxiously, His source of safety. The chain tightens. T: Closer! La cadena se aprieta. T: You were drifting! You must not drift. You must be following me always. T: ¡Más cerca! Su respiración se agita. T: ¡Te ibas! No te puedes dejar ir. P: I am on my hands and knees Walking through a large park. Though, it is dusk There are still people out Walking along the paved pathways, Talking to themselves, Glancing with a dismissive curiosity. From behind me, I can hear the group in anger yelling. G: Why are you not going faster? Why are you not galloping? P: I take a quicker step, But then slow down again, Finally, I stop. The group approaches. G: What is wrong with you? Can’t you figure it out? The prisoner tries again but is unable to continue. The group begins to throw things: Dead branches, small stones, trash… G: It’s what you deserve Since you won’t gallop Correctly. Why won’t you do it correctly— Why do you move with such strange motions? They circle around boxing the prisoner in, Laughing triumphantly. 62| SUBTERRANEAN DELIRIUMS 5. 5. Do you disagree with us? She looks at his bruises, Tracing one with her hand. T: What is wrong with you? P (quietly): Nothing. P (bajo): Nada. T: What? T: ¿Qué? The prisoner does not answer. El prisionero no responde. She stares into his eyes. Ella le mira a los ojos. T: ¿Vas a empezar a hablar? Enfadada, se va dando un portazo. T: Are you going to speak up? Angrily, she walks away slamming the door behind her. 66| SUBTERRANEAN DELIRIUMS 9. There is a box Shaped a little like a casket In the prisoner’s room. 9. The torturer walks back and forth As the drugs she has given him Begin to take affect. T: Come here. With no options, the prisoner Walks towards the box and the torturer. T: In. The prisoner begins to get in But will not fit, The body at a wrong angle, An arm dangling out, Clothes in the way. T: What is wrong with your body, Why will it not adjust? The prisoner begins to get out of the box, But she stops him, Slamming the box down on a leg. The prisoner looks like an old rag Dried incorrectly, jutting at various angles Or waves Crashing on shore then forming again, The eyes looking outside of the room, Somewhere else, nearly defiant, Though lost. In the background, The prisoner can hear the torturer Speaking as though reciting an elegy. When the prisoner again tries to get out of the box, The room is empty, the torturer is gone, And there is blood flowing along the prisoner’s body. poetry/poesía|67 10. 10. Walking through sand, The prisoner Sees hands and faces Breaking through the floor Of the desert. There are many Breaking through And at some points crowds Have gathered around Awaiting one who comes up. Some appear to be shunned Or at worst shoved back down While select others who must have pleased The crowds Are hoisted up, caressed, Celebrated. Having kept a distance, The prisoner is surprised When the hands of the gang Begin to grab at Or try to stop the prisoner. Angrily and festively, The gang begins to burry The prisoner in the sand. Under the sand, the prisoner can see others Screaming and shoving the sand away Or those who are breathless and dying. The prisoner too Begins to frantically shove the sand away Even though the hands and feet Of the gang Push and stomp down From above. 68| SUBTERRANEAN DELIRIUMS 11. M: Shut up. 11. H: Cállate. I’ve often enough become something just aside myself, this mind responding to a world that asked something of me, a touch or push, and then an effort of self to respond or comply while the mind spins, gears grinding or smoothly shifting, but has any of it got me where I wanted to go. I’ve learned these the merits of communication, deliberate if blunt sometimes, though it takes a while and wants its place welcome, warm, and inviting. A call, for comfort, the stiffening response, one I’ve learned to read for what it is, love bourn out in expressions of distance because of a feeling of helplessness, such cold comfort, no space for tears. Two minds at odds, entirely different in desire, the older woman, the younger woman, each vying for the clearer space to be heard, years now. I learned a poor lesson at a young age, once of patience and a tolerance that has few limits. I was told recently, I have been postponed in every category of my life. I’m way past due. So I’m told. Was told. Today. By a friend. I’m stepping away from all of this, looking at it, to find the image I’m missing, the pictures in motion of a long life, its richest moment hidden from view, its greatest passions too often snatched away in unsuspected moments or simply, the deepest wells of feels suspended in motion and expression and yet, eternal maybe just because. Me decían. Hoy. 2011/2012 Los Ángeles, California. fiction/ficción|71 Lost City (or an Exploration in Solitude) Not then, then. An entire era of life gone and ambling in mourning something for which I could find no evidence of it ever having existed. Perhaps it was only a product of my mind then, or a hope unsecured and unfound, unfounded. In this rain and green I found myself missing that full heart with a longing unmet and unmatched this long life, but then crashed down, leaving emptiness in its wake, having remembered that such feeling lived alone or perhaps only in my mind; it was afternoon, and its pulse surged up like an unexpected ocean swell, but then I looked to the shore from which I’d come, been set adrift or cast out years before, saw in the distance the ruins of what I had waited so long to find again, had traveled so far and endured so much to find, nothing but ruins. I was weak by then, unsettled and untouched for long years, a gnawing hunger had become part of my days. I had learned to live without expecting a respite or reprieve, and only hoped to learn to live well with the losses sustained. By some unexpected turn of the wind I was set in a direction, a sister throwing a bit of luck my way, perhaps Cleo or Clementia or even Ganymeda, but there was no way to ever really know for sure. Upon arriving, I tentatively stepped onto an old dock, barely held together now, swaying precariously with the lap of the smallest wave or distubance, and made my way into the old city, burnt and blackened for the most part, but the grandeur of what it once was remained visible to the discerning eye, the sensitive sort. It was once a place of light and moving shadows, with music and a moon that rose in different shapes and colors every night so close to this city, flooding the streets at close range, closer to the earth since the death of Blake, Jupiter’s moon, a place of endless possibilities but still, dances that never happened, and songs that only waited to be sung, lingering in shadows, pitched and waiting, forever waiting. I stepped slowly and carefully, and was startled when I felt something crunch beneath my feet, and stood still as the sound echoed through the streets, drawing the emptiness of the city to me, through the streets and stairwells, alleys and half broken towers, such a small sound carried so far, reverberating back, bouncing, sounding, I was alone here. The air was warm with the smoulder of embers, a hundred year fire, but my hands felt icy cold, my bare skin tingled cool against the warmth with the feel of the wind that blew through so evenly and lightly I had hardly noticed it until I heard it was singing a wordless song. I wandered through the labyrinth looking for familiar places coming first across a shanty town that appeared in my dreams, and like a dream itself, its environs gave way to sunlight and heat upon the baked and hardened earth. Colorful pieces of laundry hung loosely along an old line strung across the back lot and smalls pieces of fabric littered the ground. The little pub had a tin roof, and a doorway without a door, the dark of a wooden interior holding the cool air against the heat that surrounded the frame. Two glasses still full, one with ice, one without, stood frozen in time on the bar where we had sat in my dream. He had come to find me here in there, sat down, and said, “long time.” The beating of my heart had left its trace here, stopping time, a still frame. He was gone, and I was gone, but sitting there on the bar beneath an empty ashtray with a note, a thin piece of paper with some unclear fragments, hints of where he’d gone, what he’d become, and since, what he believed. I held the slip of paper loosely, hand trembling, and stood there alone for a long time. I meant to keep the slip in my pocket, but it fell to the floor and flew away into a hole in the ground. I left and moved again through the city. I made my way, stepping over broken stones, around broken glass, seeking some other familiar place, and answers. I found a letter unopened, but it was addressed to no one, and so slipped it into my bag and kept walking. I eventually came to the library, or what was left of it, and stood outside the broken door for some time, minutes, hours, I didn’t know, but the sun had settled lower in the sky by then, and the light was rosy in hue, perhaps a good omen, or so I hoped. Most of the books had been destroyed in the fire or the preceding floods, but a few remained intact. One appealed in cover, color, and width. I put it in my bag, and on an impulse, grabbed another as I was walking away to find a soft place to sit and read with the cold coffee I had left. I found some grass still barely covering a hill near the water, and settled 72| SUBTERRANEAN DELIRIUMS down to read. The moon was full and round when I’d finished, the sunlight entirely gone, I was tired and achy, hardly able to get up, but the air was turning too cool, and the warmth had flowed out from inside with the turning of every page. I found myself a ghost of myself immortalized in those pages, my lot thrown in with the unholiest of shadows, driven out then drowned, lost in any ocean, any evidence of what I’d left behind thrown in the junk pile then burned. I knew then what I had been afraid to know all along. Black Orpheus Amidst all this experience of dodging death, my body flirting and retreating from the edges of life, pieces of the puzzle that have been held by unseen strings mid-air, tucked away in boxes and shelved, buried with the bones of my dog in the backyard, have all been finding a place. Was I loved? Now, a calm has descended upon my days with the same grace and fluidity that these pieces have been landing in their respective puzzles, lending sense to what, before, had no meaning, answering questions which had wrung out over years, satisfying intuitive guesswork that, previously, had no confirmation. My days are a steady roll of peace, wave upon wave, a steady, rhythmic sense to it all—life, what can never be explained, but as continuous as the flow of days, alive. Love has been unfurling beneath the places where I could fall from points on a map all over the world. The sources of the love, and the courses each trajectory take, are invisible to each other. But in this place, where death came, again, to greet me, to touch the pallor of my bloodless face, I have a view of all the love that swelled up from across the seas and amidst the continents to pull me back from the abyss that waited, a map glistening with salt water and sunlight, illuminated by moonlight, dampened with the dew of nights and singed by the morning sun. Sometimes, in the dark of night, I imagined Death lurking about the corridors of the hospital, or thought I saw him turning corners, sensed him hiding in closets when the nurses came to change the blood packs in the dimly-lit room, a friend sleeping in a chair, me waiting, alert while half-asleep and ready to flee, and I wondered, is it possible that it was he who desired me?… that my long-sought-after love turned out to be the masked face of death? Questions like this haunted me as childhood memories filled in the spaces of my quiet nights, the name, Black Orpheus, accompanying an image of Death dressed in mask and black body suit, a skeleton in Brazil, and I imagined him waiting, somewhere, as I hid behind my own masks and retreat, hoping I can escape him for long years. For this reason, among others, I find that I have to keep moving. I’m not done with this 74| SUBTERRANEAN DELIRIUMS place, not ready for death, but perhaps, none of us are done when a dark angel descends to find us and snatch us away from this beauty of experience we have named life. And so with love … when are we done? When does the last trickle of water run out? When the bed runs dry? And is it inevitable? Or the other way around, is love never done with us? It seems it depends on the source. Does love well from within? Or do we draw it into us from without? Or still, does love seep into the porous divisions between body, mind and our environment? I’ve begun to believe that we all are quite literally connected, and just as a single organism changes with light and water, soil and nutrients, tending and sound, so do we, together as well as apart. And as our sense of this, our feelings, change through experience, we are constantly changing, and our relationships are as real and as tangible as our single beings, selves, alone, never alone—there is a fluidity to it all that can carry or drown us; it’s simply a matter of whether or not we are able to follow the flow or if we fight against it in panic or resistance. Then there is longing, and a friend of mine is right, longing has to do with the mirror, how we see ourselves, a battle for our sense of self, a distortion of a grim fairy tale which reveals we all desire to be the fairest of all in our way. It has little to do with Narcissus, but his alter-ego, who longs for love, for attention, but really, really for recognition of who he is, acceptance and celebration. I think it’s all any of us ultimately needs, recognition of who we are, and love for it, and it has little to do with who we believe we are and more to do with who we feel we are—and what we feel is always reciprocity in the making—our sense of self pouring in from without as we pour ourselves out; we are not solitary but social creatures who gain or lose, thrive or suffer, rise or fall in sync with what is around us, the air, the light, the water, the earth, and touch. It’s a crucial distinction, what we believe we are, and who we feel we are – the latter being more about how we experience our lives, our moments, our days. In feeling, sensations and thoughts intermingle without friction or resistance, a rhythm emerges between body and mind, as Antonia Damasio says while Looking for Spinoza, body and mind blend in a harmony. When interacting with love, beliefs fold under feeling, as thoughts merge with joy or pleasure, … resistance breaks down and we are left with some things which are more elemental, chemistry, sensation, well-being, or desire, touch, and love. Distances are forged amidst struggle and strife, and such conflicts are played out in ourselves and among each other. There are means and manners of allowing these conflicts to melt away – to constantly question who and what we are, — to allow ourselves to reveal ourselves to ourselves, in self-loathing or self-love, and to allow others the spaciousness to reveal themselves to us. As often as we feel alienated or unloved, sometimes betrayed, we might find that we have attached our sentiments to a dream or projection of something or someone we imagine is there—we have invested in Faith, not in Love. There are solutions to these tendencies. We could Trust. Believe a person when they tell you who they are, and I’ve doled out that advice to younger friends, and I’ve added my own colors and edges to that saying over the years, rounding it out, having found that if a person tells you that he or she lies, they will, and it’s foolishness to believe something else, that they won’t lie you to you, or if someone tells you that they aren’t the marrying kind, it’s idiotic to expect them to do something else—to assert your own sense of importance as the game changer, the trump of self, —hoping for what you want and don’t have, rather than loving what you have, ignoring what you don’t want. If we allow people to be who they are instead of struggling with our own hopes about who we want them to be for us, relations get a little easier, and we feel a lot less foolish when we feel sad, or let down, or disappointed. When we release our expectations, we are releasing ourselves as well as others. We are allowing a sense of self the space and strength to grow and find balance. We are allowing another to live who and what they are. In time, a sense of other then feels like a privilege and not a deception—and we realize, to come to someone any other way is only deceiving ourselves, to hold them to our own expectations is demanding they fulfill our own needs, to believe that they will change for us is akin to saying, they were not good enough for us to begin with. But this is all language—what we believe. What we feel, or how we feel about ourselves is always changing, subject to the wind and the light, the homeostasis of being in the world, alone, with others, alive—to love or be loved, or not. If we release in language the lies we tell ourselves, if we release in thoughts the expectations built upon hopes instead of loves, if we embrace others for who they fiction/ficción|75 are, think to what they want, feelings will find their rhythms with thoughts, and sometimes, love will grow. We live a life of dreams and decisions, we live our own reactions to experiences and events past, we live in fear or with courage, but very few of us live who we really are; for one thing, it’s always changing, and for another, we can’t possibly be a belief. We can, however, become something in feeling – and our effect upon others is not simply an effect at a particular time and in a particular place, but it’s always time and always space. There is no way to measure out affect on Other, no, but we can strive to live well, and love well, and appreciate, always, that we are here. It isn’t sentimental to be grateful for life. And attachments needn’t hold us down. Awash in feeling, we can find our way into love, out of suffering, into life. The problem and has always been our difference, a grand mystery, seven billion singularities, shimmers of light in mirrors or water, none of us consistent. Thus, there are no easy rules, no straight paths, no easy way in or out. And maybe this is part of why we love, why we experience this quality of consciousness which simply isn’t necessary to reproduction, the recognition of the contingencies of our being in humanity. Perhaps love itself is an act of forgiveness, for sins past, present and future, for the distances which set us apart, for the beliefs with which we confuse ourselves. In love, others can recognize in us what we might fail to see in ourselves—both the good and the bad, and it’s why we crave love, and it’s also why, perhaps, rejection hurts so much. We translate rejection not simply as a rejection of ourselves as a potential partner, but as a rejection of our selves, who we are—that someone looked inside, didn’t like what they saw, and left us alone looking in a mirror. Multiplying and shimmering, the mirror reproduces itself when we feel loved – in the soft light of evening, in silent ripples of water in a lake, in the rain dripping from leaves – this beauty we find in life is the beauty we find in ourselves, when we love, and feel loved. The world gives back what we bring to it because we are as much a part of our world as it is a part of us, and this is being, and this is consciousness – which is only, really, to be alive. I feel filled up with love these days. I’ve often wondered why I’ve never felt bitterness, and seems I should have here and there this long life—many things never worked for me in this life, —but, but, the grand joke, the belly laugh comes from -in - this - life-, right here, right now, in it, alive, me. Maybe death isn’t a monster, and maybe grim reaper is the better term, because Death takes of the Life what we would choose to keep for ourselves, to be alive, and together, not alone. When Death comes to find me, at least I know this, I was loved, and I am loved, and I need never feel alone, alive. ¿He sido amada? 78| SUBTERRANEAN DELIRIUMS Pier Paolo Pasolini, stills from / fotogramas de Canterbury, Decameron, Medea essay/ensayo|79 Personal interpretations in narrative and commercialism -cinematic and literary history about “Henry Lee”, Che cosa sono le nuvole? and Il fiore delle mille e una notte Briefly in this essay I’d like to do a comparative analysis between a piece of music and the accompanying music video, and some films by Pasolini. The music video and song is called “Henry Lee” released on the album Murder Ballads written by Nick Cave, and the music video which can be seen on Youtube and Daily Motion is sung by Cave and P.J. Harvey. The films by Pasolini I’d like to compare the video to are Che cosa sono le nuvole? (1968), and Il fiore delle mille e una notte (1974). My motivation for doing a comparison between some of Pasolini’s films and a music video and song which was made and written much later, in 1996, are related to my methods. I specifically have not chosen to do a comparison between Pasolini and another filmmaker, and intentionally chosen to do a comparison between Pasolini’s films and a music video, and one by a musician and artist who seems to be putting out unusual, liberal, and possibly poetic thoughts in his artwork, and in the “Henry Lee” song, P.J. Harvey’s work also. The means to perform this analysis are various. I want to write about my personal and immediate responses to each work, and then using a more critical eye, figure out some things about how the pieces work and function differently by talking about them in regard to various strands of cinematic and literary history. I also want to discuss the works in regard to some theoretical issues to show how and why certain types of perceptions and receptions might be being shaped by the formats in which the works are being received or seen, and how the types of narratives and also the way in which narrative is formed and developed in each piece, whether the music video or the movies interact with those formats or spaces. My hunch is, which is perhaps the gist of why I am doing this comparison, is that for some reason which appears to have to do with the way in which narrative operates in each artwork, the music video/ song by Harvey and Cave becomes subsumed into a set of more commercial structures and pitfalls than the films by Pasolini, despite the fact that Pasolini’s films are also traveling in the same commercial sites and on-line platforms as “Henry Lee” including the social networking music and video sites, and packaged in dvd formats.1 Such would be easy enough to prove if I were to have chosen a music video by an artist like Madonna, or a movie director who openly embraces commercial values. Likewise I have not chosen to do a comparison with an artist or a musician who specifically makes music or artwork in avantgarde paradigms because again it would be easy enough to prove that like with Pasolini’s films those works are also defying the same commercial forces that “Henry Lee” may be subject to. Rather I would like to try and make some discoveries about those forces, and find the edges and corners and spaces within the narratives, and narrative structures in both “Henry Lee” and Pasolini’s films, and the points of contact between those elements- where and how the narratives diverge from those commercialisms and move into as of yet unknown kinds of receptions and perceptions in their viewers and listeners. It is also possible that Nick Cave and P.J. Harvey’s work could be read in different paradigms than I’m doing in this essay with different results (same for other song-writers mentioned, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez). If one were to analyze Cave’s music and Harvey’s music within the history of punk or post-punk, and the politics of that movement one might come up with different conclusions. My thought is that even if the Henry Lee song or music or artwork of a similar vein is subversive and/or transgressive, it still is not crossing out of a liberal paradigm into a form of radical poetics, and that is not because the works are not good or don’t meet some critical aesthetic or standard—either sublime, beautiful, or whatever that might be, but rather seems to have something to with the way they are unable to counteract the commercial forces that the videos exist in, as Pasolini’s movies do. Although I still am operating with my own paradigm, and there might be ways to interpret the music by makers like Nick Cave and P.J. Harvey in ways where they do escape some of those commercial aspects, and perhaps what I find out about Pasolini’s work in my analysis, and in personal responses to the various pieces will offer alternate ways of viewing that work in conjunction with the films, outside of the commercial forces which occlude a different or less directed viewing or receiving of the music video. 1 80| SUBTERRANEAN DELIRIUMS My attraction to the Nick Cave song and poetry it exhibits on first viewings is also a motivation for doing this comparison, and that simultaneously it wasn’t necessarily written intentionally within a “radical” or “experimental” paradigm, or even a non-commercial paradigm as many avant-garde or experimental artists attempt to do within their work. That is artists like Madonna or Brittany Spears, or Eddie Veder seemed to have already accepted commercialism as part and parcel of their work and what they do.2 They are making their work to be sold from the get-go. I am writing about an artist like Nick Cave, or P.J. Harvey, or someone like Tom Waits, or perhaps earlier in history Leonard Cohen, Joan Baez, or Bob Dylan in comparison with Pasolini’s films specifically because artists like these aren’t writing songs because they want to sell them. Many of the artworks of a maker like Cave, or the songwriters/artists mentioned promote liberal ideas, and do not appear to participate in any kind of destructive hierarchy. Their songs and music could easily be read as liberal art works that do good things. It may also be relevant that the musicians mentioned all make heavily lyric based work; their self-made images are cast as poets. All of these musicians as with Pasolini could easily be linked to literary history as an extension of a long history of songwriters and poets such as the troubadours of the middle ages, or ancient lyric poets like Sappho who also played stringed instruments, and sang acoustic music directly to their audiences. Beginning with “Henry Lee” the song and video could be awakening certain kinds of romantic desires and thoughts that might make someone who is young open to love. Some of the ways the video does this are formulaic. Both singers are pretty, wearing expensive nice attractive clothes, matching in this instance; they almost look alike- Harvey with her shiny jet black hair, Cave’s hair also dark black complementing their fitted black suits, each wearing button-down white shirts underneath their jackets. Singing together they craft a kind of troubadour duet, a vision of love that could be quite seductive. The song itself is based on a poem in which a young woman murders the man she is in love with because he loves someone else more and won’t stay with her. One of the reasons I say it is “liberal” or exhibits “liberal values” is because the young woman is very clear in her thinking and her desires. She articulates logically even if motivated by irrational emotions and uncontrollable desires, that is to say through forms of language that are not equivalent to the kinds of feelings that are being expressed. They are channeled into a poetic form, a speech/song. Traveling into literary history this differs remarkably from an earlier love triangle, one that is told in Aeschylus’s Agamemnon in which Cassandra the Trojan princess psychically knows ahead of time that she and her lover Agamemmnon the king are about to be killed by his wife Clytaemnestra. Instead of speaking logically, she utters in a more visionary speech or rather illogical, and what could be described as a “barbarian speech” beginning in line 1214 -“ ἰοὺ ἰού, ὢ ὢ κακά”- speaking irrationally with the speech like that of a prophet so the listener or reader cannot ascertain directly what is happening when she is “uttering” rather than speaking rationally. More ironic artists who have been studied by the Situationists, or written about by many philosophers or theorists often exploit commercialism in their own works in order to comment on it and critique it. Songwriters and artists who might fall into this category could include Kurt Cobain of Nirvana, or Andy Warhol. This might be part of what Pasolini is doing although the way in which narratives work in the movies suggest that the critique moves away from critique and becomes a more constructive, and possibly visionary sensibility. This could be related to the time in which Pasolini is making films, the 60s and 70s, a more romantic moment or time when protests and change was flourishing, even though Pasolini was cynical about protest movements, but also the place within the world he existed Italy, and Rome, a city where ruins mark the history of the space, and the memories of those authors, those ghosts everywhere, and somehow earlier methods of critique that exist in Ancient Latin poets could appear like apparitions in Pasolini’s films.. 2 essay/ensayo|81 These obscurings of clear speech often occur with female protagonists in Ancient Greek tragedy and literature which perfected the genre of “lament” where women or supernatural female characters such as the moirae, or the priestesses at Apollo’s sanctuary in Delphi utter irrational noises in order to express their visions, desires or feelings, rather than speak logically like most of their male counterparts. Of course there are many exceptions, Antigone being a superexample, but those exceptions are generally accused derogatorily by the characters surrounding them, or by members of the Greek chorus of acting like men, or being mannish women. That is their gender, their role as “woman” or “female” is perceived to be compromised by any kind of logical and direct speech that expresses exactly what it is the character feels and wants in the moment she feels and wants it. The character P.J. Harvey plays in the music video “Henry Lee” would be exactly that kind of mannish woman who would be criticized for being so by an ancient Greek audience, or perhaps even by some members of a contemporary audience. Returning to notions of desire and seduction, I sense that part of what drew me to the song was precisely the way feeling, desire, sensation, and romantic ideas in the content of the piece are so singularly linked to the form of the video, which can be heard in the lyrics and content of what they’re singing about, seen in the physical appearance of both characters, and also in how the song is sung and performed as a duet between two lovers who are speaking with each other and in the video moving amidst each other, dancing and touching while singing their story to the audience. It’s a highly sophisticated piece in terms of the relations it so clearly develops between form and content. As a viewer I felt highly seduced by this music video, which I saw later in my life, but I perceived my seduction as similar to the way I might have been seduced by certain types of media I’d been exposed to on television or in the movie theater or on the radio when I was a teenager or in my early 20s. With the Cave and Harvey video I wanted to watch the video and listen to the song over and over again, almost obsessively, and at first did not understand what precisely was drawing me to the music. There are other pieces of music, or works of art that I like to watch repeatedly but this song perhaps partly because of its simplicity, and also that it was a commercial piece intrigued me as I tend to be more interested in experimental and avantgarde art or more fiction based work, so I became curious as to why exactly I was being pulled toward this particular song. I thought if I could figure that out I would learn something about the way I had approached media, certain kinds of images, and also understand more about how I had filtered those media images that I had experienced and been attracted to earlier in my life: images that I specifically chose to move away from as I learned more about media in school and on my own, and began to believe that much of that media, whether music or television had manipulated my conceptions of things, my aesthetic taste, and even my emotions or feelings in my personal life in ways that left me unhappy with that media even though I had been highly seduced, perhaps obsessed with those kinds of images when I was younger. This kind of dangling of desire before the audience, and sometimes outright manipulation of an audience usually in order to sell products becomes commonplace in the United States and probably around the world in the 20th century as mass production in all aspects of society increases exponentially after World War II. A work of literature that exists before much of this type of media saturates the market, but one that could be thought to harbor a cynicism, and possibly a precocious awareness of what was to come is The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald which was written in a moment before the capitalist machine had reached its full force. The final lines of the book with the “green light” at the end of Gatsby’s dock, an apparent portent of an American future, and hopes of a dream which the green light could signify possibly setting up in the minds of young ambitious persons longing for a new life, almost for a new world is shown to be empty, artificial, and shallow through the relationships in the novel and the depiction of certain landscapes, for example the Valley of Ashes. The Henry Lee song was probably marketed for an audience of young, educated, hipster type listeners of the 90s who might not have had so much experience in life, although potentially very media literate from a young age, and open to discoveries about all kinds of things. 82| SUBTERRANEAN DELIRIUMS The aesthetics in the video and the lyrics of “Henry Lee” are slightly clichéd in that they could be described as mysterious, dark, uncertain, about a murderous form of love, something strange and unknown. Though I do not think what I’m calling the clichéd aspect is what makes the video create somewhat superficial and empty desires in its viewers or listeners. Those aspects, the dark and the mystery, are probably what attracted me to begin with. The Henry Lee video appears to have an edge, and exhibit the kind of sensibilities that often young people whose aesthetic tastes are easily molded by the latest fashion, especially those with romantic desires might be drawn toward, perhaps in very much the same way readers in the 19th century would gobble up gothic books published in serial format as if a kind of “dark” imagination, far away from the drudgeries of every-day life operates from within, holding them within a world of poetic possibilities and unknown atmospheres, and twisted yarns of far away realms. The song and the lyrics come from an old Scottish ballad called Young Hunting anthologized by Francis James Child, published in English and Scottish Popular Ballads between 1882 and 1898 in 5 volumes. To get a sense of the kind of material these folkloric volumes contain, one of the legends anthologized and that continues to be popularized in film and literature in the contemporary world is Robin Hood. As mentioned earlier “Henry Lee” relates a story of how a woman murders the man she is in love with because he won’t leave his girlfriend for her. A set of noirish and murderous ideas, and eerie scenes might be evoked in a reader or listener. What comes through almost a hundred years later in the Cave and Harvey version made in 1996 is a feeling that I could dwell sensuously in the details, obsess on a single aspects of the images in the video or immerse myself in a cocoon to escape loneliness that often accompanies existential and romantic visions or feelings that tend to accompany the youths of lonely and depressed teenagers, especially intellectual teens, although with imaginations fed on bourgeois and capital culture.. However, like with Gatsby an element of containment, an awareness that substance or authenticity are missing, and that a particular kind of illusion is being fostered is present, along with a sense in a listener that she or he would dwell or imagine within what appears to be dream and desire, but in a desire and realm of sensations that are completely laced with capital, and dreams that are constructed out of capital ideologies that further accelerate and continue such ideas. Romantic longings which often begin in adolescence also seem to be used to market certain kinds of material and aesthetics to young people. While I do not want to trace out an entire historical trajectory of when this kind of marketing began in media one could guess that in films and movies made in Hollywood in the 1950s, for instance by Nicholas Ray or Elia Kazan, that a kind of stereotype of what was desirable aesthetically for a younger audience began to be developed, especially one that had been alienated by various societal forces in post WW2 America, where the future was highly uncertain, where suddenly the United States had the ability to literally destroy a place far outside of its borders within a matter of seconds after the invention of the atomic bomb, and then broadcast those bombings on television live. Such events probably created many anxieties in younger people who were growing up at that time. So what could be seen in Nicholas Ray’s work as a form of empathy and an attempt to understand the desires of young men and women, an obvious example would be Rebel Without A Cause, those aesthetics developed at that time of a vulnerable young teenage woman, the character Natalie Wood plays in many of the films she’s in and a mysterious brooding young dark male as her counterpart, the role Dean plays in Rebel then later in the 90s seem to become more ossified, and more easily consumed and sold.3 Although there are some theorists, possibly the Situationists, who believe an aesthetic that markets youth culture and then proceeds to sell itself to the youth who then tend to perpetuate the very culture that they are being sold is far more extensive than I’m suggesting in the essay. see Society of the Spectacle by Guy Debord. My contention is that Nicholas Ray even if he does participate in creating or contributing to a kind of aesthetic that was easier to sell, or had commercial values, that those asesthetics were filtered through a kind of empathy for younger people and the environments they found themselves in 1950s America. “We now have to find somewhere to go, a belief, a myth. Somewhere real. In Rebel Without a Cause the kids are desperately looking for a place so they can live.” Bodies of Work, Kathy Acker 3 essay/ensayo|83 The aesthetics and the kinds of characters that are seen in Nicholas Ray’s films as in Rebel Without A Cause exhibit unexpected parallels with the aesthetics of the much later music video “Henry Lee” of Nick Cave and P.J. Harvey. The girl Judy played by Natalie Wood in Rebel Without a Cause is vulnerable, with large eyes, smooth skin, dark, unaware, naïve, and she becomes like a stereotyped character, never a step ahead of everyone else, usually a victim, and then the hero figure who becomes her romantic counterpart, dark, mono-syllabic, also mysterious, androgynous in his appearance; they tend to look alike. They match. Strangely because of what was written about before Cave and Harvey’s video seems more progressive then the film by Nicholas Ray, and Dean and Wood’s characters and how they evolve. Pasolini’s films deviate radically from the above paradigms described. Unlike the narratives formed in the song or video which I’m suggesting despite the liberal ideas that are apparent i.e. a feminist strong female voice in “Henry Lee”, and the experimental or at least literary quality of the composition, made 20 to 30 years earlier in the 60s and 70s the movies not only maintain their poetic vision, they also are resistant or maybe more than resistant, immune to the kinds of feelings that tend to end up in a feeling of containment that the later liberal pieces are so prone toward, specifically through the way narrative structure functions in the films. The films transform narrative in ways that are not formulaic, unlike the video by Cave and Harvey which despite its punk or liberal vision still seems to link to a set of aesthetics that are coopted by a market system by how they appeal to an audience that might be indoctrinated into a set of values that are packageable and sellable even if Cave and Harvey’s work could be read as poetic. Pasolini works with a kind of metalanguage in his films that probably comes from theater, painting and various art media- the breaking of the 4th wall, the author of the film being in the film, elements of mythopoesis, stories from earlier texts play within the newer artwork forming a mosaic or myriad of various strands where the sources are not always traceable. Authorship is both complicated and compromised in Pasolini’s movies. For instance he’s already making fun of hierarchy and the concept of great art in his films. One sees such an idea immediately in many of his movies. For example in the short Che cosa sono le nuvole? when the two puppets are being driven along in the garbage truck, with the driver singing a poppy Italian song quite cheerily, and Toto and Ninetto Davoli are lying on top of the garbage heap, there is a title card, or a placard which is a copy Velazquez’s great painting, Las Meninas with Pasolini’s name and the title of the film written across the painting. The painting he chooses is particularly apt because Velazquez was the court painter for the royal family of Spain several hundred years before. So it is not only that he references or alludes to other media in his work, he actually detourns the work as in the methods of the Situationists though with more of a sense of humor probably prevalent in Mediterranean literatures reaching back into ideas of Latin writers and poets. He makes a joke or a laughing stock of the royal painting by Velazquez, but the joke ends up having deeper implications as we move forward in history to a time when this kind of traveling between different media formats, concepts of pirating, stealing other people’s work, becomes common place, mummified, and museumified. There’s humor around that turns hierarchy and something sellable on its head. One also remembers that the two puppets are in the garbage truck with the great painting by Velazquez. There’s a juxtaposition between high culture and market values, or even more complexly- we have a painting that was painted by the royal painter which at the time the film is made is worth millions of dollars on the art market being turned into a canvas for the title of the film and the “author’s name”. 84| SUBTERRANEAN DELIRIUMS Then there might also be a visual allusion or wink to Velazquez’s painting in which the painter is in the painting and the king and queen are in the mirror: a feat of technique which seems highly opposed to Pasolini’s aesthetic where now Pasolini’s name is with or on the the painting in the garbage truck. And then remembering even today how when going to see the painting in El Prado you usually see people standing in front of the painting trying to figure out what the “optical illusion” is suggests a funny irony in regard to its placement in the garbage truck as a placard for the title of short film with puppets. Earlier in the film they are acting in the play Othello as puppets; so we have a play within in a movie, and then a painting within a movie much like a Chinese box. Each leads to nothing; the evolution never leads to any kind of progress or sense of “going somewhere”; they end up dumped out of the truck and looking at the sky, and the final moment is them looking at the clouds in the sky, the title of the film. So it’s a story, but it’s story that doesn’t lead anywhere. There’s no happy ending, no leading to a marriage, it’s already altered in that the protagonists of the film are puppets and not humans. In Il fiore delle mille e una notte there is also a kind of threaded story within a story in which each narrative leads to another narrative. 1001 Nights already has a very complex narrative structure. Scheherezade is forced to entertain the king every night with a story to avoid getting killed. Pasolini sidesteps this aspect of the book, or actually he dismisses that part and seems to move past the frame narrative and gets to some kind of unfolding of events, narrations, and changes within the various characters lives without beginnings, middles and ends that are typical of many stories. Even in a book like Grimm’s fairy tales, for the most part all of the stories have a beginning, a plot, a middle, and then an end, usually with some kind of moral implied, even though Grimms’ fairy tales tend to be wild, insane and imaginative. There are no morals in Che cosa sono le nuvole?’, or in Il fiore delle mille e una notte. Pasolini as an artist seems particularly drawn to literature and he was also writer, and wrote several books. The meta aspect of his films may be working in a way akin to the greek chorus in ancient greek tragedy although even more concentrated. That is the chorus is the space in which multiplicity and collectivity flourishes apart, and where conceptions of the ego are diffused and altered in ways that differ greatly from the heroes. In Pasolini’s films many characters’ stories develop, and the stories within the films do not become the kind of ego-centered work that is prevalent in much literature, commercial movies, and t.v., that is highly plot driven to an ending that is already understood, often predictable, and ideologically based and known. It turns out that stories and structures that are more simple are easier to sell. The more complex the ideas the less sellable they become. Even a form that is beautifully made, perfectly elaborated, a single scene against a green background can become a method with which to both manipulate viewers into single perspectives that they can identify more easily with, and from which their lifestyle, hopes, dreams and desires can then be dictated by the forces of the market place, rather than have to sort through a mess of threads of narratives that harbor unknown factors and uncertainties of where you might end up. essay/ensayo|85 Interpretaciones personales - intimidad, romanticismo y roles sexuales diseminados en la narración y su relación con el comercialismo a través de algo de historia literaria y cinemática de “Henry Lee”, “Che cosa sono le nuvole?” and “I fiori delle Mille e una notte” Brevemente, en este ensayo me gustaría desarrollar un análisis comparativo entre una obra musical y el vídeoclip que la acompaña y algunas películas de Pasolini.
