Parece que el invierno de la crisis va dejando la
ciudad. Poco a poco los turistas vuelven a salir de
sus guaridas para dejarse ver por nuestras calles. Al
menos, así lo demuestra cerca del 10% de incremento
en pernoctaciones que la ciudad ha registrado en los
cuatro primeros meses.
El momento va a ayudar todavía más. Valencia en
primavera es irresistible. El templado, y algunos días
caluroso, sol primaveral se alía con las largas tardes
de luz natural. La agradable temperatura y las terrazas,
que empiezan a proliferar en la ciudad y en la playa,
son una eficaz combinación que confina al armario
abrigos y chaquetas, provocando una propagación de
las mangas de camisa, auspiciadas por esa expresión
tan utilizada por aquí, ir a cuerpo. Y así, junto con la
imparable agenda de propuestas que tiene la ciudad y
que puntualmente te mostramos en Ocio y Negocio, la
seductora Valencia primaveral florece.
It seems that the winter of the crisis is leaving the city as
the tourists come out of hibernation and let themselves
be seen once more on our streets. At least that’s what
the almost 10% increase in overnight stays which the city
has recorded in the first fourth months would suggest.
The season will help even more: Valencia in spring is
irresistible. The mild, and on some days hot, spring
sun finds an ally in the long evenings full of natural light.
The pleasant temperature and the terraces, which are
beginning to proliferate in the city and on the beach,
make for a powerful combination that sends coats and
jackets back to the confines of the wardrobe, causing an
outbreak of shirtsleeves, summoned up by a commonlyused local expression: ir a cuerpo (to go without a coat).
And so, with the relentless agenda of proposals offered
by the city and which we present in Ocio y Negocio,
seductive spring-time Valencia comes into bloom.

Maximum sports excitement returns to Valencia between 25
and 27 June, when the city’s urban circuit is to host the Telefónica
European Formula 1 Grand Prix for a further year.
The cars will race at full speed and burn rubber around the Juan
Carlos I Royal Marina as the drivers battle for a place on the podium.
A few privileged spectators will be able to follow the event from the
decks of their boats and mega yachts, as if they were in a VIP box.

Better dates could not have been chosen for the hosting of the
event in Valencia, with the thermometers reaching 25ºC during
the day and registering milder temperatures at night, thus
inviting those present to enjoy the summer atmosphere of
the beaches, the harbour and the city centre. Those present
will not only witness one of the key events in the Formula 1
calendar, but will also have the opportunity to enjoy a totally
Mediterranean weekend: swimming at the city’s beaches,
enjoying the first soothing rays of sunshine and discovering
Mediterranean flavours in the form of typical dishes such as paella,
fish, seafood and “tapas”.
When evening descends, there’s nothing like giving in to
the spellbinding Valencian moon and discovering the lively
atmosphere of the summer terraces that serve the most refreshing
drinks and the most popular cocktails, such as “Agua de Valencia”,
made with cava, orange juice and sugar.

El Mercado Central de Valencia es el ágora de la gastronomía
en la que los sentidos reciben miles de estímulos procedentes
de los productos que asoman desde los más de 1.500
puestos que lo componen. El colorido y los aromas provocan
que a cualquiera se le haga la boca agua con el jamón de serrano,
los quesos, las frutas, verduras, especias o los mariscos.
Y es que este es uno de los más grandes de Europa, con
8.000 metros cuadrados de superficie, y uno de los más
prestigiosos debido a la alta calidad de la oferta, que viene cada
día directamente del mar, de la huerta o del campo para ponerla a
disposición del cliente.
El que fuera en sus orígenes un grupo de puestos que se ubicaban
en una plaza abierta, que hoy lleva el nombre de “Plaza del Mercat”,
es un símbolo de la rica y variada gastronomía mediterránea y
representante del cuidado que toman los valencianos en la cocina
y en la mesa.
El actual mercado tiene más de 75 años de vida y además
de destacar por la oferta alimenticia se ubica en uno de
los edificios modernistas más emblemáticos de la ciudad,
repleto de alusiones decorativas a los productos de la huerta y
los jardines de Valencia. Su estructura, formada por columnas
de hierro, que dicen recuerdan a la Torre Eiffel, lo convierte en
atractivo arquitectónico que no hay que dejar de ver. De hecho, prácticamente cada barrio tiene su propio
mercado, tenemos el de Mosén Sorell, pequeño y con encanto en
pleno corazón del Carmen, el de Ruzafa, El Cabañal o el de Rojas
Clemente. Otro muy simbólico es el Mercado de Colón, que
tras su rehabilitación se reconvirtió en elegante centro cultural
y de ocio donde tomar un café en una de sus terrazas, escuchar
un mini-concierto, comprar un buen libro o una planta para alguien
querido, regalarse un producto gourmet o simplemente degustar
la buena gastronomía en un restaurante y disfrutar del ambiente
distendido. De imponente arquitectura modernista, su estructura
de hierro y sus cuidados mosaicos en “trencadís” no dejan
indiferente a nadie.
Y para celebrar la pasión por la gastronomía, Turismo Valencia
pone en marcha por tercera vez, junto con 50 restaurantes de la
ciudad, la Restaurant Week-Valencia Cuina Oberta. Esta edición
se desarrollará entre el 5 y el 11 de julio y ofrecerá menús de
medio día por 20€ y menús de noche a 30€. Un regalo para el

Explorar Valencia en familia es una experiencia amable para todos, los más pequeños
descubrirán animales procedentes de África o tiburones de los mares del sur, mientras los
grandes disfrutarán del buen clima, la gastronomía, los buenos paseos y la cultura.
De oeste a este, la ciudad brinda oportunidades lúdicas y educativas como una
expedición por África a través de Bioparc en Valencia. Allí, los leones, lémures, las
cebras, jirafas, panteras y antílopes, nos aguardan para mostrarnos su exuberante fisonomía
y particular forma de vida en medio de un hábitat totalmente africano.
La excursión podrá continuar en el Parque de Cabecera a bordo de un barquito en
forma de cisne que recorre el lago de este jardín. Terminado el paseíto, viajar en el
tiempo a través de las pantallas interactivas del Museo de Historia de Valencia, es
toda una aventura. Y para adentrarnos al casco histórico, nada como recorrer en bicicleta
los Jardines del Turia y disfrutar de la naturaleza en abierto.
Llegados al histórico barrio del Carmen, un ascenso a las Torres de Serranos o al
campanario de la Catedral, el Miguelete, permiten vivir la historia y patrimonio y disfrutar de
increíbles vistas. Dentro de la Catedral nos aguarda el imponente Santo Cáliz, del que bebió
Jesucristo en la Última Cena, y también allí los cuadros de Goya o los frescos renacentistas,
nos muestran un pedazo de la historia del arte. La Lonja de la Seda, el Mercado Central
o el de Colón son espacios que no hay que dejar de ver. Para refrescarse y continuar, nada
como tomar una horchata o un helado en alguna de las terrazas del centro.
Seguimos en bici hasta la Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias y allí nos adentramos
en un mundo de ciencia lleno de experimentos con los que jugar, como es el Museo
de las Ciencias. A un lado de este museo un mundo digital nos traslada al Nilo o a
espacios naturales, es el cine IMAX del Hemisfèric. Muy cerquita el planeta submarino del
Oceanográfico les familiariza con peces tropicales, del Ártico o de los mares del Japón.
Tras un día sumergidos en la fauna y flora marina, nada como terminar degustando la
mejor gastronomía en los restaurantes del parque.

Y para zambullirse de verdad en el agua, nada como ir a las playas de la ciudad,
disfrutar de un día bajo el sol saltando las olas. Alquilar un patinete, jugar al voleibol, tomar
unas tapas en un chiringuito o disfrutar de un arroz, son sólo algunas de las opciones.
Exploring Valencia with the family is an enjoyable experience
for everyone: children are able to discover African animals and
sharks from the Southern Seas, whereas adults can enjoy the fine
weather, food, relaxing walks and cultural activities. From west to
east, the city offers a wide range of leisure and educational
opportunities, such as an African expedition in Valencia’s
Bioparc. Here we will find lions, lemurs, zebras, giraffes, panthers
and antelopes waiting to show us their exuberant features and
unique way of living in the midst of an authentic African habitat.
The excursion can continue in the Cabecera Park’s lake
aboard a swan-shaped boat. Following the fun in the park, a
trip through time by means of the interactive screens in the
Valencia History Museum is the next stop on the adventure.
And there’s no better way to discover the historic centre than a
bike ride through the open-air natural setting of the Turia
Gardens.
Within the historic neighbourhood of El Carmen, a trip up
Las Torres de Serranos or the Cathedral Belltower, known
as El Miguelete, affords incredible views that allow the visitor to
experience the city’s history and heritage. The Cathedral itself
hosts the imposing Holy Grail used by Jesus Christ during the
Last Supper, as well as paintings by Goya and Renaissance
frescos that form part of the history of art. La Lonja de la Seda
(Silk Exchange), the Central Market and the Colon Market are
sights which absolutely must be seen. Before continuing, there’s
no better way to refresh oneself that to sip an horchata (a drink
made from tiger nuts) or enjoy an ice-cream in one of the city
centre’s many terraces.
We continue by bike to the City of Arts and Sciences, were in the
Museum of Sciences we enter a world of science full of experiments
with which we can play. The Hemisfèric IMAX cinema, which is
located next to the Science Museum, transports us to digitalized
versions of the Nile and natural spaces. The nearby underwater
planet known as El Oceanográfico enables us to discover tropical
fish, as well as specimens from the Artic and the Sea of Japan.
There’s no better way to finish after spending a day immersed in the
marine fauna and flora than to sample the excellent cuisine on offer
in the park’s restaurants.

And to really have fun in the water, there’s nothing better than
a trip to the city’s beaches to enjoy a day in the sun among the
waves. Renting a pedal boat, playing volleyball, sampling “tapas”
in a beach bar or enjoying a rice dish are just some of the options.

Los puentes que saltan sobre los verdes Jardines del Turia son grandes narradores
de la historia de la ciudad de Valencia y testigos de excepción del pasado y
presente de la ciudad. Contemplar estas hermosas pasarelas nos permite
descubrir que este pulmón verde que ahora abraza de Oeste a Este a la ciudad,
fue durante siglos el lugar por donde el río Turia andaba al mar.
Los cinco más antiguos y de los que todavía conservamos su estructura, se
construyeron durante los siglos XV y XVII, cuando el río aún era la poderosa muralla
natural de la ciudad. Estas joyas por las que han desfilado los momentos históricos
más importantes de la ciudad son el de la Trinidad que pertenece al siglo XV, el de
Serranos, el del Mar, el del Real y el puente de San José que pertenecen al siglo XVI.
En la actualidad, el viejo cauce del río es un enorme jardín atravesado por quince
puentes. Algunos de los contemporáneos como el Puente de Aragón, el único art-decó
de Valencia con esculturas de José Terencio Farré o el Puente del Ángel Custodio,
antiguo Patrón de la ciudad, vieron al río pasar entre sus arcos, y fueron testigos de las
crecidas y riadas que asolaban la ciudad, hasta que el Turia fue desviado.
Entre los puentes más modernos y nacidos con el río yaciendo seco, destaca el
Pont de les Arts situado frente al IVAM (Museo de Arte Moderno) y el Puente de
las Flores, llamativo por las más de 27.000 flores que lo componen en función
de la época del año. Y diseñados por el arquitecto valenciano Santiago Calatrava
sobresalen El Puente de la Exposición que representa una blanca peineta y el
Puente Nou d’Octubre.

vanguardista acorde con su grandioso entorno, situado entre L’Hemisfèric y el
Palau de les Arts. Y tras el museo de las Ciencias Príncipe Felipe disfrutamos
del Puente de l’Assud d’Or, último puente que Santiago Calatrava ha diseñado
para la ciudad, y que cuenta con un mástil que eleva el techo de Valencia a 125
metros de altura.

The bridges that span the green Turia Gardens are
great sources for discovering Valencia’s history and
privileged witnesses to the city’s past and present.
Contemplating these beautiful bridges allows us to
discover that the green belt that now spans the city
from west to east was for centuries the route taken
by the River Turia on its journey to the sea.
The five oldest remaining bridges were built during
the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries, when the
river was still the city’s powerful natural protective.
These architectural jewels, which have played to
host to city’s the most important historical moments,
are Trinidad Bridge, from the fifteenth century, the
Serranos Bridge, the Mar Bridge, the Real Bridge
and the San Jose Bridge, which date from the
sixteenth century. The former river is currently an
enormous garden that is crossed by fifteen bridges.
Some of the contemporary bridges, such as the
Aragon Bridge - the only example of art-deco in
Valencia, with sculptures by José Terencio Farré –
and the Angel Custodio Bridge, built in honour of
the city’s former patron, were witnesses to the river
flowing between their arches and to the floods that
devastated the city prior to the diversion of the Turia.
Among the more modern bridges, created once
the river had been rerouted, mention may be made
of the Pont de les Arts, located in front of IVAM
(Modern Art Museum) and Las Flores Bridge,
adorned with a display of more than 27,000
flowers that is changed in accordance with the
season. The spectacular Exposición Bridge, which
represents a traditional white ornamental comb,
and the Nou d’Octubre Bridge, were designed by
the Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava.

Also designed by Santiago Calatrava and
forming part of the City of Arts and Sciences,
the Monteolivete Bridge displays avant-garde
aesthetics in accordance with its magnificent
setting between L’Hemisfèric and the Palau de
les Arts. Calatrava’s most recent bridge, l’Assud
d’Or, is located behind the Prince Philip Science
Museum and is crowned with a 125-metre mast
that towers above the city of Valencia.

Valencia da la bienvenida al buen tiempo con una agitada
agenda de actividades lúdicas, culturales o deportivas para la
temporada estival. Bajo el cielo de trencadís del Palau de les
Arts alberga desde el 29 de mayo hasta el 30 de junio el
Festival del Mediterrani. Dirigido por Zubin Mehta, está
dedicado a la figura de “Ella”. Destacan dos grandes óperas,
una es Salomé, de Richard Strauss y la otra es Carmen de
Bizet.
Siguiendo con la programación cultural el IVAM sorprende
con la muestra “De Gaudí a Picasso”, que podrá verse
hasta el 27 de junio. En paralelo y hasta el final del verano los
amantes del arte contemporáneo disfrutarán de los universos
artísticos de Bernar Venet, Julian Opie o Ramón Gaya.
Rodeados de jardines y bajo el cálido cielo del verano tendrá
lugar la 25 edición del Festival Internacional de Cine
Cinema Jove, programada entre el 19 y el 26 de junio.
Los jóvenes creadores proyectarán sobre la pantalla sus cintas
para competir por el premio. Y los cinéfilos están de suerte, ya
que la Filmoteca de Valencia pone en marcha otro verano más
la “Filmoteca d’Estiu”, que como habitualmente lo hace, se
ubicará en los Jardines del Turia, bajo el Palau de la música
y comenzará la programación el 27 de julio hasta el 5 de
septiembre.
Y con ambiente lúdico y festivo, la Feria de Julio traerá
a Valencia, como cada verano, conciertos de rock y pop,
pasacalles, la colorista batalla de las flores en pleno Paseo de
la Avenida de la Alameda o la temporada de toros. Será como
siempre un mes de celebraciones y fiesta.
Enchufados a la red y a sus flamantes ordenadores, un
año más los más de 5.000 campuseros intercambiarán sus
conocimientos, software y hardware en el que es el evento
digital más importante del mundo, la Campus Party. Durante
los primeros días de julio, la Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias
se transformará en la base de este evento, que contará con
jornadas, talleres y fiestas para los participantes.
En clave de deporte, las aguas de la Marina Real Juan Carlos
I de Valencia acogerán entre el 27 de julio y el 14 de
agosto una de las pruebas del circuito mundial de la clase
RC44. Volviendo el máximo nivel de la náutica a la ciudad. Y en
el Circuit de la Comunitat Valenciana Ricardo Tormo, del 17 al
18 de julio se celebrará el Ferrari Challenge y entre el 18 y el
19 de septiembre se desarrollará el WTCC: Campeonato del
Mundo de Turismos.

habitual “Filmoteca d’Estiu” summer cinema sessions, which
are to take place below El Palau de la Música in the Turia
Gardens between 27th July and 5th September.
The fun and festive atmosphere of the July Fair includes, as
is customary in the summer, rock and pop concerts, street
parades, the colourful “battle of the flowers” in Paseo de la
Alameda and the bullfighting season. As always, July will be a
month of celebrations and festivities.
Connected to the Internet and their dazzling computers, more
than 5000 IT fans will exchange knowledge, software and
hardware in what has become the world’s most important digital
event, the Campus Party. At the beginning of July, the City of
Arts and Sciences will be transformed into the base for the event,
which will include workshops and parties for the participants.
For sports lovers, the waters of Valencia’s Juan Carlos I
Royal Marina will host an international RC44 class event
between 27th July and 14th August. Between 17th and 18th
July, the Valencia Region Ricardo Tormo Circuit will host the
Ferrari Challenge, whilst between 18th and 19th September it will
be the turn of the WTCC: World Touring Car Championship.
